VERONA — Mary Drake Batton Swoope, 69, died Aug. 22, 2010, at Darlington Oakes in Verona. Services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Davis officiating. Visitation is Wednesday from 9 a.m. to service time at the church. Mrs. Swoope was born icon Aug. 8, 1941, in Vicksburg to the late Alexander Alford Batton and Isabella Person Drake. She was a retired teacher from the Lowndes County school. She was on the Board of Directors of MEA, and was a member of Aberdeen Junior Auxiliary and West Point Pilot Club and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Port Gibson. She attended Southwestern College in Memphis and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi. She received a master’s degree in gifted education at Mississippi University for Women. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Alexander Alford Batton, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Edward A. Swoope; son, James Prowell Swoope, all of West Point; and a granddaughter.

Lector Boswell
WEST POINT — Lecter Mae Boswell, 82, died Aug. 22, 2010, at her residence. Graveside services are today at 2 p.m. at West Point Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Payton Myers and Jearl Hunley officiating. Visitation is today from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Boswell was born icon Aug. 22, 1928 in Oktibbeha County to the late Willie Wiley Jones and Lillie Jane Ray. She was a seamstress for Artex for several years and a member of Siloam Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Boswell; and a grandson. She is survived by four daughters, Janis Boswell Johnsey, of Melbourne, Ark., Sheila Brewer and Gena Arney, both of Cedar Bluff, and Martha Jane Smith, of Suffolk, Va.; brother, Willie “Peck” Jones, of Eupora; sisters, Lavis Coggins, of Longview, and Bobbie Jean Arney, of Cedar Bluff; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ludie Crump
HAMILTON — Ludie Mae Thompson Crump, 66, died Aug. 23, 2010, at Community Hospice in Verona. Services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Glen Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Evans cemetery in Lamar County, Ala. Visitation is today from 4-8 p.m. at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Mrs. Crump was born icon Jan. 16, 1944, to James Basil Thompson and Connie Mae Enlow Thompson in Knoxville, Tenn. She was a lifelong resident of Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton School. She worked as an inspector in the furniture industry and was a member of Athens Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Joyce Crump. She is survived by her husband, Charles Wayne Crump of Hamilton; daughter, Teresa Ann Houk, of Hamilton; son, Bobby Wayne Crump, of Hamilton; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ben Higginbotham
MACON — Ben “Bud” Edward Higginbotham, 44, died Aug. 21, 2010, at Noxubee County Nursing Home. Services are Monday at 2 p.m.at Mashulaville Baptist Church, with Bobby Joe Butler and Bobby Parish officiating. Burial will follow in Mashulaville Baptist cemetery. Visitation is Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, and one hour before the service on Monday at Mashulaville Baptist Church. Mr. Higginbotham was born icon May 28, 1966, in Macon. He was a member of Mashulaville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben Wiley Higginbotham, and his foster mother, Alice Coleman. He is survived by his mother, Mary Campbell, of North Carolina, and a sister, Roxie Higginbotham, of North Carolina.

Thomas Rodgers
VERONA — Thomas Jefferson Rodgers Jr., 84, died Aug. 23, 2010, at Darlington Oakes in Verona. Services are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Robinson Chapel with the Rev. R.C. Bryan officiating. Visitation will be today from 5-7 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home. Mr. Rogers was born icon in Mansfield, Ark., on Feb. 20, 1926, to Thomas J. Rodgers, Sr. and Sudie Mae Neely. He was owner of TJ’s Army-Navy Surplus store for many years. He was retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Watson Rodgers, of West Point; daughters, Kim Rodgers Harmon, of West Point, Kay Rodgers Talbot, of Byhalia, and Tracy Rodgers McVaugh, of Columbus; brother, Harry Rodgers of Kosciusko; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ben Brashier
WEST POINT — B. T. “Ben” Brashier Jr., 88, died Aug. 22, 2010, in Roy, Utah. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Calvert Funeral Home in West Point.

Elaine Nelson
COLUMBUS — Elaine Nelson, 89, died Aug. 21, 2010, at Aurora Australis Lodge in Columbus. Services are incomplete and will be announced by Carter’s Funeral Services of Columbus.

Mildred Staten
MACON — Mildred Staten died Aug. 23, 2010, at Noxubee General Hospital in Macon. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Cockrell Funeral Home.

Hughdolf Guin
Mr. Hughdolf "Buck" Guin, Sr., 88, of Starkville, died Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Oktibbeha Regional Medical Center in Starkville, MS. Services for Mr. Guin will be held today, Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM from McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel in Philadelphia, MS with Rev. David Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Bethsaida cemetery in Neshoba County. Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, from 12 noon until service time at McClain-Hays Funeral Home in Philadelphia, MS. He was a native of Millport, AL and had lived in Starkville for the past 18 years. He was retired from Bell South Telephone Company after 40 years of service. Mr. Guin was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbus. He served in WWII 22nd Infantry, 4th Division in France and Germany and received the American Defense Service Medal, EAMETO Medal, Purple Heart with one OLC, and Bronze Arrowhead. He was preceded in death by his parents, Almos Bascum and Wilma Shaw Guin formerly of Millport, AL; and brothers, Woodford Guin and Bedford Guin of Natchez. Survivors include wife of almost 64 years, Ellen Warren Guin of Starkville; daughter, Dr. Mary Linda Guin of Starkville; sons, Hughdolf Guin, Jr.(Elvie) of Columbus and Boyce Warren Guin (Mary) of Starkville; granddaughters, Amy Lemonds (Chip) of Columbus and Paige Guthrie (Cody) of Nashville, TN; great-granddaughters, Allison Lemonds and Katelyn Lemonds of Columbus; brother, Wayne Guin (Lois) of Brooksville, FL; sisters, Juanita Kipping of Memphis, TN and Lucille Youngblood (Walton) of Madison; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Deloris Stokes
Deloris StokesDeloris Stokes, 73, of Kennedy, AL passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Aurora Australis Lodge, Columbus, MS. Services will be held Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home Chapel in Millport, AL with Rev. Jerrell Spruill and Bill Best officiating. Burial will follow in Unity Grove cemetery in Palmetto, AL. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL. Mrs. Lillian Deloris Stokes was born icon April 19, 1937 in Starkville, MS. She attended Aliceville High School, departed to marry Kaywood Stokes on July 30, 1953; however, later on, she received her GED. She and Kaywood were happily married icon for 57 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker for her family. She was a very devoted Christian and devoted her life to studying and teaching the word of God. She served as a Sunday school teacher, and an organist throughout her life. She did outreach ministry in the nursing home and was always a teacher and mentor of the word to her family. She could always be found praying. Later in her life, when she went to live at the nursing home, she viewed it as her last mission to witness to others. She was deeply loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by her husband, Kaywood Stokes; mother, Lillian Avants Haggard; father, Curtis Haggard; son, Randy Stokes; brother, Shelly Haggard; and sister, Marquerite Johnson. She is survived by daughters, Teresa (Leroy) Hudgins of Kennedy, AL and Sandra Boone of Reform, AL; sisters, Marvine Windle of Hampton, VA, Jewel Gibson of Atlanta, GA, and Barbara Elmore of Vance, AL; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. Pallbearers will be Greg Hudgins, Andrew Kaywood Hudgins, Buster Woodard, Shawn Trimm, Ricky Johnson, Timothy Evans, and Stanley Rushing. Honorary Pallbearers are the staff and employees of Aurora Nursing Home.

Michelle Brewer
COLUMBUS — Michelle D. Brewer, 47, died Aug. 22, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle in Columbus. Services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Full Gospel Church. Burial will follow in Union cemetery in Columbus. West Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ms. Brewer was born icon in Lowndes County and was a factory worker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Brewer Burdine, and father, Aaron Brewer. She is survived by her sisters, Sondra McGregory, Nanette Pratt and Sabrina Robinson all of Columbus, and her step-father, Richard Burdine of Columbus.

Bryon Coke
MACON — Dr. Byron W. Coke, 84, died Aug. 20, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle. Services are Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Salem Memorial Church near Macon with Bro. Gary Shelton presiding. Burial will follow at Salem cemetery. Visitation is from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon. Dr. Coke was a native of Pasadena, Calif. He graduated from La Puente High School and later from the University of Southern California with B.A. degree. He continued his education at Columbia Pacific University, where he earned his Masters in Construction Management and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Episcopalian Church and a U.S. Navy veteran and Seabee. He owned and operated an engineering firm in Newport, Ore., and also worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He is survived by his wife, Dolly Guy Coke of Macon; daughters, Susan Nakashima of Walnut Creek, Calif.; Marsha Isaacs of Oceanside, Calif.; Janet Van Whry of Los Angeles; Karen Corrette of Clairemont, Calif.; and Jennifer Coke of Fresno, Calif.; brother, Alden Coke of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jalayna Agnew
JACKSON — Jalayna A. Agnew, 5, died Sept 17, 2010. Services are today at 1 p.m. at Full Gospel Ministries Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Pisgah cemetery. West Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ms. Agnew was born icon in Lee County and was a student. She is survived by her mother, Kenya Brown of Starkville; father, Perry Agnew of Starkville; sisters, Janerra Lindsey, Jamirha Davis and Perryana Agnew, all of Starkville; grandparents, Mary Brown, Barbara Agnew and Perry Earl Gray, all of Starkville.

Gladys Rose
ABERDEEN — Gladys Rose, 95, died Sept, 23, 2010, at Golden Living Retirement Center in Foley, Ala. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later time by Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

COLUMBUS — Bettye Jo Wilson, 56, died Sept 18, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triange in Columbus. Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at East Oktibbeha County School. Burial will follow in Sessums cemetery. Visitation is today from 1-5 p.m. with family hour from 5-6 p.m. at West Memorial Funeral Home. Mrs. Wilson was born icon in Oktibbeha County to the late Willie D. Bash Sr. and Ada Mae Bash and worked as an educator at East Oktibbeha Elementery School. She is survived by her husband, Samp Wilson Jr. of Crawford; daughters, Pamela booker of Indianapolis, Erica Wilson of Grenada, Sherrednda Wilson of Crawford, Cassandra Grayer of Starkville; brothers, Willie D. Bash Jr. of Crawford, Jerome Bash of Columbus, Eugene Bash of Starkville, Bernard Bash of Pheba and three grandchildren.
