William Trimble “Bill” Chapman
William Trimble “Bill” Chapman, 75, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2000. Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on Jan. 4, 1925 to Fletcher and Margaret Chapman.
His extreme love of country prompted him to enlist in the U.S. Army during WWII at the young age of 18. Bill was so proud that he and his fellow classmates of 1943 answered their country’s call. He served in the pacific and was among one of the first troops to land after the surrender to Japan.
After the war he came home and furthered his education. He met the love of his life Betty, at Portsmouth Interstate College. He felt like the luckiest man on campus after Betty invited him to a sorority dance.
They were married on April 2, 1949, and recently celebrated 51 years together. Their family was made complete with the birth of two daughters Lisa and Leigh.
Bill and his family traveled extensively through his position with Morrison-Knudsen as a Human Resource Manager. He retired after 30 years of outstanding service and leaves many friends in the M-K community.
Bill, Betty, and Lisa moved to Billings, seven years ago to be close to their daughter Leigh and her husband T.J. and their children Megan and Ryan Smith. Bill was a member of the Billings Genealogy Society, a reflection of his great love of family. He was a member of the Billings Elks Lodge, Al Bedoo Shrine Greeters, Billings Scottish Rite 32nd Degree and a member of Ashlar Lodge #29. He served as a Lodge Historian.
Bill was a unique and gentle soul with a warm and ready smile. Anyone who ever met Bill would have been struck by his friendly nature. He never met a stranger.
Bill had a great love of music and learned to play the piano at the age of 70. He never passed by a piano without playing a chord or two with his slender fingers. He enjoyed computers and was constantly educating himself. His love of trains was a family heritage and he was an avid reader of Civil War and Western history.
Betty will always hold to her heart a loving, dear, and kind husband. Lisa will remember a daddy who was always there for her and called her his Lisamouse. Leigh has the memory of her dear, wonderful daddy. She will always be his Leighbird. T.J. has the love of a man who was an in-law, but a true father. His granddaughter, Megan, will remember her Grandpa Bill and his gentle teasing. His grandson, Ryan, will always be Grandpa Bill’s “buddy” going out to get those special hair cuts.
Bill will be in the hearts of countless loved ones and friends and his spirit will be with us always.
