BRITT CHANDLER

PLENTYWOOD - Britt Chandler, 81, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at his home surrounded by his family.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Plentywood. with the Rev. Bob Sewvello officiating. Burial will be at Plentywood cemetery. A public gathering will be held at 7 p.m. today at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Plentywood.

Britt was born in Plentywood to John Britton Chandler II and Ellen Parsley on Feb. 3, 1922.

On Aug. 21, 1945, he married Elizabeth Lodahl of Dagmar.

When he was 17, he and his brother Fay purchased the Gambles store in Plentywood. In 1942, he and Fay took over Britt's Bar, a gift from their father. In 1949, he purchased Tri-County Distributors, the Great Falls Select and Olympia beer dealership for northeastern Montana. In 1952, he opened a stock car race track in Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1958, he and his brother Bill purchased the John Deere dealership and ran it until 1969. He and his brothers also managed a farming operation in the Dooley community.

He enjoyed playing bridge, dancing, playing poker and socializing with friends. His lifelong friends were Phil and Elaine Marsh.

Britt was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, was a grand knight in the Knights of Columbus, and was one of the founders of the Plentywood Jaycees in the 1940s. He was a past president of the Jaycees, state vice president and state secretary-treasurer. The club was instrumental in paving the highway to the Canadian border and in convincing both governments to keep the port of entry open 24 hours a day.

He claimed his biggest accomplishment was having eight children and providing each with a college education.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Fay and Bill; sister Dorothy "Dotty" Sorensen, and her husband, Ed Lindquist.

Fulkerson Memorial Chapel of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.

GLEE TEEL

Glee E. "Budd" Teel, 89, long-time Havre resident, died on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at a local care facility of natural causes.

A public viewing and visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home. The graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Highland cemetery with the Rev. John Richardson officiating.

Budd was born May 31, 1914, to Steven E. and Alice (Malin) Teel on a homestead north of Havre. His family relocated to Dodson in 1923, where they resided for three years. Hard times moved them to Glentana for one year. With work scarce, the family moved to Kansas.

In 1930, Budd came back to Havre by himself to work many jobs north of Havre and Dodson. As a young man, he loved riding the Plains near the old family homestead near the Canadian border. Budd loved riding horses, and that took him to competitions across Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. During the 13 years he competed in O-Mok-Sees, he garnered many district, state and national championships.

In 1936 he met and married Velta W. Hammon. In 1956 the couple started the G.E. Teel Plumbing and Heating Company, which they operated until 1978.

Budd also was an accomplished banjo and guitar player and passed his love of music on to his family.

Budd was preceded in death by his parents, Steven and Alice Teel; his wife of 54 years, Velta Teel; brothers, Ray and Dean Teel; and sisters Dolly Green and Nellie Currie.

Survivors include his sons, Eldon (Voncil) Teel of Hortense, Ga., and Steven (Sue) Teel of Bakersfield, Calid.; daughter, Shirley (Wayne) Buell of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials in Budd's honor may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Charlotte Kelly, P.O. Box 1107, Havre, MT 59501; The Hi-Line Therapeutic Riding Association, P.O. Box 786, Havre, MT 59501; or a person's choice.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

Kathryn M. Clare
(July 13, 1926 - August 12, 2011)

Kathryn Clare died peacefully on the morning of August 12, 2011.

She lived a long and fulfilled life.

Kathryn was born to Claude and Ruth Martin on July 13, 1926 in Jeffers, MT.

Her happy childhood around her grandparent’s store in Jeffers nurtured a lifelong love for the Madison Valley.

Growing up, she became familiar with various areas of Montana as her father’s work as a bridge engineer brought the family throughout the state.

In 1947 Kathryn married William Huber Barnes in Helena.

After he died in 1957, she raised their two daughters and worked for the State Highway Commission.

In 1969, she married Ralph Clare and they eventually relocated to McClellan Creek, where they built a beautiful log home and lived happily for many years.

At this home, many joyous Christmases were celebrated with Kathryn’s children and grandchildren.

After Ralph died in 1994, Kathryn stayed on in their beloved home and lived independently for many years.

Although extremely self-reliant and independent, as her health began to fail she was forced to rely more on the care of others.

In the past nearly two years, she lived with her daughter in Butte, MT.

Kathy was devoted to her family and her favorite times were spent with grandchildren, daughters, nieces and nephews.

Throughout her life she was a tremendous support to her family.

Although a quiet person with a tendency to avoid crowds, she had many dear friends.

Her gracious spirit and generosity along with her love to cook and feed people made for many good times in her home.

She was especially fond of Montana, calling it the “most beautiful place on Earth.”

She was preceded in death by both parents, her two husbands, sister Louise Hungerford and brother Kenneth Martin.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeanette Barnes of Butte and Barbara Barnes of Reno, NV; grandchildren Carmen Barnes, Ronda Tenas, and Robbie Tenas; step-daughters Ann Sipes of Henderson, TX and Jane Clark of Longview TX; and great grand-children Anthony Tenas and Alena Tenas.

She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as many good and wonderful friends.

A Funeral Service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the First Baptist Church, corner of 8th and Warren with a viewing starting at 1:30 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, MT.

"Gordie" Gordon Selmer Gudmunson
(July 16, 1950 - August 6, 2011)

Gordon “Gordie” S. Gudmunson, age 61 of Helena, passed away August 6, 2011.

He was born July 16, 1950 to Gerhard and Doris (Hastings) Gudmunson in Williston, N.D. and grew up in the Watford City, N.D. area.

Gordie left home at an early age to work in the oil fields.

He was employed with various ranches, he owned and operated his own exploration drilling rig and owned and operated a feed store.

Gordie gathered wild horses for BLM in the Pryor Mountains for many years.

He then worked for various race tracks and owned and operated the Horseshoe Originals by Gordio.

Gordie was an enthusiastic entrepreneur.

His principle occupation was a Horse Farrier and a Ranch Foreman.

He married his soul mate, Ebbie Williams on June 20, 2009 in Helena.

Gordie had many hobbies and interests.

He trained horses and worked with cattle, was a professional story teller, and enjoyed BBQ-ing.

His ultimate joy was to take Ebb out to dance.

Most of all, Gordie loved being with his family and friends.

He also was a founding member of Eagle Mount riding program and supported the Helena High School Rodeo.

Gordie was preceded in death by his father, Gerhard and his brother, Kenny Gudmunson.

He is survived by his mother, Doris; wife, Ebbie of Helena; his children, Tony (Sharon) of Socorro, NM; Kelly (Patty) of Tallahassee, FL; Andrea (Kent) of Glendive, MT; CR and Cierra Kunesh of Helena, MT; Jon (Stacy) Lamson of Hammond, MT; grandchildren, Kyle (Laci), Lindsey (Allen), Tyler, Camden, Shad, Anthony and Charlie; great-grandchild, Ryder; siblings, Wayne of New Rockford, ND; Barbara (Bill) Mathis of Watford City, ND; Dolly (Ted) Pfau of Minot, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Gordon’s life will be held Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 6 p.m. in the entry hall of the grandstands at the Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds.

There will be a pot-luck reception to follow.

NORMAN AZURE

HARLEM - Norman Franklin Azure Sr., 88, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at a Havre hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in the Harlem High School gymnasium. Burial will be in the Pony Hill cemetery. Vigil services will be today at 7 p.m. in the Red Whip Center in Fort Belknap.

Norman was born on July 16, 1915, to Alex and Mary Azure. He spent most of his life in the Harlem area. He worked at numerous jobs but most enjoyed ranch work with Knute Kulbeck and working with horses. Norman had been a No. 1 Harlem Wildcat fan all of his life.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy Blackbird and Eunice Stiffarm; brother, Lee Azure; daughter, Sylvia Azure; stepsons, Kenneth, Delmar and Anthony Bigby.

Survivors include his sons, Norman Azure Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev., Michael "Sonny" Azure and Wayne Azure, both of Harlem, Edwards Azure of Mariposa, Ariz.; stepson, Robert Azure of Harlem; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook.

Bessie S. Kaltenbach
(September 2, 1928 - July 18, 2011)

Bessie S. Kaltenbach was called Tuesday morning by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (in whom she had placed her trust on Nov 18, 1955) to go to her Heavenly home.

Bessie was born at home in E. Helena Sept 2, 1928, the daughter of Bessie and Arthur C. Mergenthaler.

She worked at Woolworth’s Drug Store, where she met her beloved husband Gene who worked at Canyon Ferry Dam.

On July 5, 1953 she married Eugene Kaltenbach in Helena, Montana.

They made their home in Great Falls, Montana, working together to raise their children, Darla and Mark.

She was busy serving her family in so many ways—ways that helped her children grow to become the man and woman God planned.

Gene was blessed in being married for 58 years to this Godly woman whose price was above rubies.

Bessie loved attending church (Victory Baptist), as well as reading her Bible and spending time with her Lord in prayer.

In addition to her family and church, among her favorite things were sewing, gardening, horseshoes, and a variety of sports.

A member of the Helena Day’s women’s softball team, she helped her team on to victory to take the 1952 and 1953 championships.

This faithful servant of God is survived by husband Eugene Kaltenbach, daughter Darla Kaltenbach, son Mark Kaltenbach, daughter-in-law Paula, grandchildren Joshua, Danielle, and Joryn, sisters Hazel Kreiger, and Bertha Pietz, and brother Lloyd Mergenthaler and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Bessie’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Retz Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at the Montana State Veterans cemetery at Fort Harrison.
