Art Rolandson
MISSOULA - The strong hands of Art Rolandson released their grip on 90 years of living Monday, Sept. 28, in Missoula. Art's life story began on April 22, 1908, with his parents, Andrew and Caroline Rolandson, pioneers of Equality Township in Red Lake County, Minn. One of 12 children, Art was born and raised on the family homestead at Roland, a small agricultural town in northwest Minnesota named after the Rolandson family.
After finishing his schooling, Art worked on the family farm and also ran a small trucking business. He made several trips to Montana, visiting his brother's homestead near Frazer. In 1929, Art worked on the State Experimental Farm in Frazer. The next year he returned to Roland where he met Mae Ellen Hackett, the attractive young school teacher who was boarding at his parents' home.

Art and Mae's marriage of 60 years began on June 11, 1932, at Roland, Minn. Art farmed and Mae taught school until 1934 when they moved to Gully, Minn. They owned and operated a general merchandise store in Gully until moving to Circle in 1946 where they purchased the John Deere Agency and started Rolandson Implement Company. In addition to being a John Deere dealer, Art operated a small farm, served on the City Council and the School Board and supported the activities of his family.

After Mae's death in 1992, Art retired from Rolandson Implement Company, leaving the legacy of a successful farm equipment business in the qualified hands of his oldest son, Ole, and two of his grandsons. Rolandson Implement, which celebrated 50 years of operation in 1996, continues to thrive into the third generation.

The last leg of Art's journey was spent in Missoula with the loving care of his children and the wonderful staff at Riverside Health Care Center. Wearing his John Deere hat, Art continued to promote the "long green line" while endearing himself to those who lived and worked at Riverside.

Memories of Art are shared by his family: Son Arvid "Ole" and wife Shirley of Circle; son Kermit and wife Andi of Choteau; son Dean and wife Judi of Bozeman; daughter Gayle and husband Gerhard Knudsen of Missoula; sister Mabel Seeger and husband Bill of Maple Lake, Minn.; brother Orville Rolandson and wife Belle of Thief River Falls, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
