GOBBLE
ADVANCE -- Mrs. Hazel M. Gobble, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Elms at Tanglewood, Clemmons. Mrs. Gobble was born June 13, 1907, in Rowan County to the late G.B. McDaniel and the late Ivy Cornatzer McDaniel. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Harvey Gobble. Mrs. Gobble spent her life as a homemaker. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of Ascension in the Fork Community. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gobble is survived by a son, Jerry Gobble, and his wife, Sylvia, of Overland Park, Kan.; a grandson, Jeoffrey Gobble, of Kansas; and a brother, Bobby McDaniel of Mocksville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at the Davie Funeral Service Chapel, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Episcopal Church of Ascension with the Rev. Kermit Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association Southern Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215 or the Episcopal Church of Ascension Building Fund, 183 Fork-Bixby Road, Advance, NC 27006. HICKS
Mrs. Gladys Pfaff Hicks, 98, widow of Charles C. Hicks died Tuesday evening at the Salemtowne Moravian Home, where she had been a resident for the past 20 years. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Moravian Graveyard, by the Rev. Norwood Green. Mrs. Hicks was born in Winston-Salem Sept. 24, 1902, the daughter of Samuel A. and Mary Ann Wilson Pfaff. She was a member of Christ Moravian Church and a retired private duty nurse. Surviving are a son, Charles C. Hicks Jr. of Pensacola, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kimberly L. Keenan and Kevin M. Hicks both of Pensacola; and three great-grandsons, Brandon, Nathan and Cody Keenan. The family requests that any memorials be made to Salemtowne Moravian Home, 5401 Indiana Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Voglers Main Street Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. Hicks.

KING
Mrs. Lillie Mae Belton King, 66, of 4021 Whitfield Drive passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center after a period of illness. She was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Winston-Salem to the late Allen Belton Sr. and Eva Willis Belton. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1952, and attended Winston-Salem State University. She was a member of the New Light Baptist Church where she sang with the gospel choir and was a member of the Sunday school until her health failed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. King Sr., her father, Allen Belton Sr. and mother, Mrs. Eva W. Belton. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon King-Starnes (Eric) of Winston-Salem; a son, Ralph H. King Jr. (Alice) of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley B. Causley of Camden, N.J., Joan B. Johnson (Glenn) of Atlantic City, N.J., and Frances B. Dean of Los Angeles, Calif.; five brothers, Howard Belton, Reginald B. Belton, both of Winston-Salem, Allen Belton Jr. of La Puente, Calif., Willie Belton of Totowa, N.J., and Isiah Willis of Liverpool, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; two close friends, Ella Stewart and Sheila O'Neil. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, from the Saint Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel P.L. Hickerson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family may be contacted at the home of Mrs. Annie M. KING
HAMPTONVILLE -- Mrs. Vertie Groce King, 83, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at her home. She was the wife of the late Isom Thomas King. Mrs. King, one of 12 children children, was born in Yadkin County May 24, 1917, to the union of Moses and Floy Groce. Her parents and three of her brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Swaims Baptist Church in Hamptonville, where she was a lifelong member. The Rev. Isaac Hicks will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She is survived by five children, Frankie (Annie Mae) King of Yadkinville, Catherine (Donald) Jones of Kernersville, Thomas King of Jonesville, Clyde (Eiko) King of Virginia Beach, Va., and Charles (Sue) King of Charlotte; six sisters, Velena Wagnoner, Francis Blevins and Ollie M. Collins of Hamptonville, Estelle (Raymond) Macemore and Jerry (Bob) Vestal of Jonesville and Mary G. Brown of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Delmar (Annie Pearl) Groce of Boonville and John D. (Columbia) Groce of Hamptonville; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Gladys Johnson of Hamptonville; and a host of friends and other relatives. Grandma Vertie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She retired from Starmount High School food services. Memorials may be made to the Home for the Aging of Yadkin County, P.O. Box 789, Yadkinville, NC 27055. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Jonesville is serving the family.

McLAUGHLIN
Mr. Robert Allen McLaughlin, 89, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at the High Point Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 19, 1911, in Rowan County to the late Henry LeRoy and Vanda McConnell McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin was retired from American Guernsey Association and was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth White McLaughlin; a son, Samuel Lee McLaughlin of the home; two granddaughters, Nicole Lea McLaughlin and Hope Kittrell; two great-grandchildren, Dillon and Alex; a sister, Louise Edwards of Wingate; and a brother, Lewis W. McLaughlin of Cary. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Ardmore United Methodist Church by Dr. William T. Medlin III. A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Back Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery in Rowan County by the Rev. Donald K. Funderburk. There will be no stated visitation. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

MILNER
FANCY GAP, Va. -- Mr. Gordon Bartlett Milner, 83, died Wednesday at the Brian Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Feb. 21, 1917, in Worcester, Mass., to Louis J. and Ruby Copp Milner. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired as head of the engineering department of Sealtest Dairy's Winston-Salem plant. Mr. Milner was a member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church. Preceding him in death were his wife, Jean Locke Milner, and brothers, Louis and Raymond. Surviving are two sisters, Janet Steeves of Washingtonville, N.Y., and Mary Deming of Danbury, Conn.; a daughter, Mrs. James K. Robinson (Jane); two sons, Steven M. Milner and wife, Loretta, of Kamuela, Hawaii, and Peter A. Milner and wife, Tanya, of Crestview Hills, Ky; three grandsons, James K. Robinson III and wife, Terri, of Rural Hall, Michael H. Robinson and wife, Patti, of Kailua, and Robert Hawkins Milner of Crestview Hills; a granddaughter, Brittany L. Milner, of Crestview Hills; and three great-grandchildren, Katherine Alane Robinson, Michael James Robinson and Christina Marie Robinson. Additional local survivors include Mrs. John Neiman (Jean) of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem. The Rev. McCarter will conduct a memorial service at Hillsville Presbyterian Church on U.S. 52 in Hillsville, Va., at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment will be at Stockner cemetery in Fancy Gap.

MOSTELLER
Mr. Paul "Pete" Elias Mosteller, 89, of Winston-Salem went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Salemtowne Moravian Home. He was born in Lincoln County to the late Elias Israel and Georgianna Roberts Mosteller. Mr. Mosteller was a 1934 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and a former teacher and coach at Mineral Springs High School. He retired after 32 years with the U.S. Postal Service. He was an active member of Friedland Moravian Church, serving as Sunday-school teacher, board member, usher, building-committee member and diener. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. Pete was a loving, kind father, devoted husband and wonderful grandfather. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Geneva Landingham Mosteller of the home; four daughters, Rebecca Myers of Clemmons, Pamela Smith, Sylvia McVay of Greenville, S.C., and Paula Mosteller of Emerald Isle; a twin sister, Pauline Goins of Vale; eight grandchildren, Lesa Simmons, Roy Myers Jr., Traci Dunlap, Christopher Ables, David Beard, Rodney W. Smith, Jamie McVay and Susan Richard; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Friedland Moravian Church, with Dr. Steven Craver, the Rev. Norwood Green and Mr. Mosteller's nephew, Dr. Jim Haney officiating. Interment will be in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. PETTIGREW
Mr. Jimmy Randolph Pettigrew, 51, of 140-C Weatherwood Court passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center unexpectedly. He was born July 2, 1949, to Bernice Pettigrew and Pearl Lindsay. He was previously employed at First Presbyterian Church and Centenary United Methodist Church. He leaves behind his wife, Zelia Mae Pettigrew; three daughters, Adrian Eugenia Pettigrew, Jennifer Ann Pettigrew and Anita Annette Pettigrew; two grandchildren, Christopher Randolph Pettigrew and Jasmine Eugenia Pettigrew; to cherish his memories of 51 years: three sisters, Ellen Mitchell (Hector), Shirley Pettigrew and Clara Robinson and four brothers, Charles, Cephus, Kenneth (Gloria) and Lawrence Pettigrew; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Centenary United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. REDDING
Mrs. Sadie Walker Redding, 85, of Balford Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Clemmons Village II. She was born Feb. 5, 1915, in Yadkin County, the daughter of William and Emily Mathis Walker, who preceded her in death. Her young life was spent in Wilkes County until she married Daniel Floyd Redding and then she resided in Forsyth County. She was also preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Nina Smith Gregory; three brothers, Grady Walker, Noah Walker and Clay Walker; and a grandson, David Jon Redding. Mrs. Redding was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for 34 years, especially enjoying the young medical students who were under the watch care of the church. Mrs. Redding's expertise in crafts was making handmade quilts for family and friends. Surviving are a son, Daniel "Buddy" Walker Redding and wife Lois of Lewisville; a daughter, Peggie Bell and husband Arnold of Hamptonville; a sister, Esther Pardue of Pittsboro; four grandchildren, Daniel Walker Redding Jr. and wife Anita, Mary Ann Redding, Koreen Thomasson and husband Chuck and Art Bell and wife Terri; six great-grandchildren, Daniel Phillip Redding, Jonathan Redding, Thomas Redding, Matthew Bell, Emily Bell and Sloan Thomasson; and a very special niece and her family, Linda and Sam Santiago. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park, with the Rev. Daniel W. Redding Jr. and Mr. Art Bell officiating. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Triad Disability Advocates Inc., 3205 S. SHAW
HIGH POINT -- The Rev. Lois Paulette Stavely Shaw of 603 N. Rotary Drive died in the early morning of Dec. 20 at her home after a yearlong battle with cancer. She served as Pastor of St. Michael Lutheran Church from 1997 to 1999. Funeral services will be at at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem. A Rite of interment will be held later that same afternoon at 4 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs. The family earnestly requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3205 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

STYERS
LEXINGTON -- Mr. Ronald Steven Styers, 52, of 202 Eastwood Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 20, 2000, at his home. He was born Feb. 4, 1948, in Forsyth County to Carl E. and Daphne Bowman Styers. Mr. Styers graduated from North Forsyth High School and, later, Brigham Young University, in 1974. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a missionary for two years in Southwestern Mission. Mr. Styers had been employed with the Davidson County Mental Health for the Willie M. Program. Surviving are his wife, Teresa Calvert Styers, of the home; his parents, of Clemmons; a brother, Carl Edgar Styers III, and his wife, Patty, of Chandler, Ariz; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Bishop James C. Hassell. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 836 Oak St., Suite 310, Winston-Salem, NC 27102.

WHITE
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Ms. Viola Lee White of 5487 Philgrove Way, Memphis, formerly of 625 W. Sixth St., Winston-Salem, and a native of Shelby, departed this life Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in Memphis following an extended period of illness. She was a member of Macedonia TVPH Church of God. Ms. White is survived by three sons, Darrell (Angela) White of Dale City, Va., Derrick (Yvette) White of Memphis, with whom she lived, and Scottie Mack of Memphis; a daughter, Bridgette (Vernon) Chase, of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Winifred (John) Moten of Winston-Salem; three aunts, Sally Thomas of Providence, R.I., Bella White of Orlando, Fla., and Katherine Boone of Avon, Fla.; two devoted friends, Arwilda Baldwin and Connie LeSaine; and a host of nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Macedonia TVPH Church of God with Bishop S.D. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. WOOTEN
Mr. Hubert Franklin Wooten, 79, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at South Lake Hospital in Clermont, Fla., following a period of declining health. A native of Yadkin County, he was born April 26, 1921, to the late Frank Owen and Martha Miriah Cook Wooten Jr. Mr. Wooten was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville. He was retired from Roadway Express, where he was an over-the-road driver with more than 31 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Wooten is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathryn Yvonne Wagoner Wooten, of the home; two daughters, Bonnie W. Dills and husband, C.J., of Bethania and Becki W. Bostick and husband, Wayne, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Jennifer D. Williard, Jonathan Scott Dills, Joshua W. Dills, Leslie D. Pitman, Stacy L. Pitman and Sherry P. Walker; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mae Godfrey, of Mount Airy; a brother, Tuttle Wooten, of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with the Rev. Jonathan Rogers and the Rev. Larry O. Harrison. FOLTZ
GERMANTON -- Mr. Donald Eli Foltz, 65, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Davidson County to Raymond Eli and Lena Spach Foltz. Mr. Foltz spent his early years in Davidson County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from Duke Power after a number of years service. Surviving are a sister, Faye D. Foltz of Hickory Tree Road and several nieces. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hebron United Church of Christ cemetery with the Rev. Blaine Possinger officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

HACKLER
WOODLAWN, Va. -- Mr. Johnie Welbourn Hackler, 79, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a period of illness. He was born April 11, 1921, to Milas and Lizzie Catron Hackler in Independence, Va. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He retired from Carnation Milk Co. and Burlington Mills. He is survived by his wife, Faye R. Hackler, of Woodlawn; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Patricia Hackler, and a grandson, Marcus W. Hackler, of King; a brother, Arnold K. Hackler of Elk Creek, Va.; a sister, Bina Coleman, of Washington, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Hackler of Elk Creek, Elwood Hackler and Elzie Hackler of Galax, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, in the chapel of Vaughan Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, Va. The burial will follow in Monta Vista Gardens, Galax. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23 at the funeral home.

HARTMAN
WEST JEFFERSON -- Mr. James Oliver Hartman, 75, died Thursday evening at his home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church with the Rev. Haywood Morrison officiating. Interment will follow in the West Jefferson City cemetery with Masonic rites. Mr. Hartman was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Davidson County to Lonnie and Eudora Hartman. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. Mr. Hartman was an active member of West Jefferson United Methodist Church, a past member of the Ashe Masonic Lodge 594, past deputy grand lecturer and past grand lecturer for the North Carolina Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and a worthy patron of the Mount Pleasant Chapter 67 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a life member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry where he was honored with the 33 degree. James hosted the "Hymn Time" morning radio program of W.K.S.K. for the past 13 years. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Adams; two sons, Tom Hartman of West Jefferson and Jim Hartman of Raleigh; a daughter, Cindy Dillard of Thomasville; a brother, Charlie Hartman of Clemmons; two sisters, Eloise James and Edith Ketner of Clemmons; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. The Hartman family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Boone Family Funeral Home, 2005 Mount Jefferson Road, West Jefferson. HINES
WALLBURG -- Mrs. Pansy Arledge Hines, 78, of Wallburg died Friday at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hines was born April 22, 1922, in Henry County, Va., a daughter of the late Harry F. and Ida Kendrick Arledge. She was a former employee of Wallburg School, where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of Wallburg Baptist Church and was active in the Sunshine Club and the senior citizens group. Survivors include her daughters, Rebecca Hiatt and husband Gene of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Andrea Sue Lewis and husband Mark, and Becky Spainhour and husband Ray, all of Wallburg; grandchildren Becky Spainhour, Andrea Jones, Scott Lewis and Will Blackburn; great-grandchildren Ashley Lewis, Brittanie Jones, Brandon Jones and Justin Lewis; one sister, Dorothy Bishop, and one brother, Ray Arledge, both of Fieldale, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Hines, and her sister, Pauline Wilson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Wallburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. Max Evington and Dr. Brooks Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Son Funeral Home in Wallburg until being placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
