Cleo Heglar Durham

MOORESVILLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Cleo Nadine Heglar Durham, 88, 140 Heglar Road, who died Monday (July 26, 1999) at her home after two months of declining health.

Born Dec. 5, 1910, in Rowan County, Mrs. Durham was a daughter of the late Victor C. and Julia Cohen Heglar. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church. Formerly employed by Douglas Aircraft Factory, Washington, D.C., and by Cannon Mills, she had retired from the Federal Reserve Bank in Los Angeles.

Her husband, Samuel Andrew Durham, died Aug. 13, 1978.

Survivors include brother Fred Heglar, Mooresville; and sister Sudie H. Kerr, Kannapolis.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Floyd Bost. Burial, Concordia Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Alvin Cecil Holt

CHARLOTTE — Alvin Cecil Holt, 67, 2733 Meadowcliff Drive, died Sunday (July 25, 1999) at his home.

Born Aug. 29, 1931, in Stanly County, Mr. Holt was a son of the late Curtis and Alice Mann Holt. He was a 1949 graduate of Albemarle Senior High School, Albemarle, and a 1953 graduate of Catawba College, Salisbury. He retired as an accountant from Wiscassett Mill Co., Albemarle.

He was a member of First Street United Methodist Church, Albemarle, Stanly Lodge 348 AF & AM and Oasis Temple in Charlotte. He was a Shriner and a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason. Past president of the Albemarle Rotary Club, he was a former member of the board of Stanly County Hospital, Albemarle. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was formerly active in Demolays.

Survivors include brother Elbert Holt, Charlotte; and sister Trina Holt Tyson, Monroe.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Thursday, Stanly Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. David Colson, pastor, First Street United Methodist Church, Albemarle. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: None.

Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

Eris Petty Davenport

LEXINGTON — Eris Petty Davenport, 87, formerly of Mount Moriah Boulevard, died Sunday (July 25, 1999) at Brian Center Nursing Home, Lexington.

Born Dec. 12, 1911, in Cobb County, Mrs. Davenport was a daughter of the late George Arbury and Agnes Irene Leach Petty. She had retired from Erlanger Mills and was a member of Christ Chapel United Methodist Church and the Carrie Clayton Bible Class.

Her husband, Howard Cooper Davenport, preceded her in death.

Survivors include brother George D. Whatley, Greensboro; and sisters Mattie Talent, Martha Welch, Evelyn West, Lois Keck and Vivian Lee, all of High Point.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lexington City Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Steve Joyce.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

Memorials: Christ Chapel United Methodist Church, 204 Northside Drive, Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Eunice Morris West

NEW LONDON — Eunice Morris West, 89, 37770 Mountain Creek Road, died Monday (July 26, 1999) at her home.

Born July 4, 1910, in Stanly County, Mrs. West was a daughter of the late Walter and Lillie Hatley Morris. Retired from Wiscassett Hosiery Mill Co., she was a member of Prospect Baptist Church.

Her husband, George W. West, died Feb. 15, 1969.

Survivors include daughter Betty West Hatley, of the home; brothers Marvin L. and Wyman Morris, both of New London; sister Hattie Furr, New London; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Main Street United Methodist Church, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Davie Rorie. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.

Emanuel Lee Childers

MOORESVILLE — Emanuel Lee Childers, 84, Mackwood Road, died Tuesday (July 27, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born May 2, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Childers was a son of the late Ira and Minnie Childers Childers. He was a retired Baptist minister.

His wife, Mabel Goodman Childers, died in 1982.

Survivors include sons Kermit Childers, Catawba, and Kenneth Childers, Mooresville; brothers Cecil, Jack, Flake and M.B. Childers, all of Mooresville; sisters Ann Lee, Mooresville, and Blanche Albright, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Neill Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Paul Childers and the Rev. Roy Pierce. Burial, Back Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mount Ulla.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Myrtle Ann Mauldin

ALBEMARLE — Myrtle Ann Mauldin, 88, 812 W. Oakwood Ave., died Tuesday (July 27, 1999) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Born Sept. 27, 1910, in StanlyCounty, Miss Mauldin was a daughter of the late John Prentis and Eddie Jane Morgan Mauldin. She retired from Wiscassett MillCo.

Survivors include brother Hubert W. Mauldin, Albemarle.

Services: 7:30 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Alexander. Burial, 10 a.m. Thursday, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-7 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials: Second Street Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 325 S. Second St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

Virginia Garrison Rudisill

BADIN — Virginia Kathryn Garrison Rudisill, 79, 1 Tallahassee St., died Monday (July 26, 1999) at her home.

Born May 1, 1920, in Badin, Mrs. Rudisill was a daughter of the late Banks Thompson and Myrtle Leora Kirk Garrison. She was a graduate of Badin High School and attended Queens College, Charlotte, and Brenau College, Gainesville, Ga., where she majored in music. She was a homemaker.

A member of First Presbyterian Church since April 3, 1932, she taught Sunday school, was pianist in the Primary Department for many years and volunteered as pianist for the church. She regularly assisted in vacation Bible school, held offices in the Women of the Church, helped organize suppers at the church and attended Synodical Training School.

She was a member of the board of directors of the Stanly County Mental Health Association and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1974. Chairman of the Children’s Services committee of the Mental Health Association, she was a charter member of the board of directors for Uwharrie Homes Inc. She had also been affiliated with Badin School PTA, was a reading aide and involved with a book club.

She married the late Gerald Alton “Jake” Rudisill Oct. 19, 1940; he died in July 1986.

Survivors include sons David M. Rudisill, Albemarle, William G. Rudisill, Wilmington, and Gerald A. Rudisill, Charlotte; daughter Mrs. Scott (Betty R.) Huneycutt, Burlington; brothers John T. “Tom” Garrison, Badin, and James B. “Jim” Garrison, Albemarle; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Ran Wray. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle.At other times the family will be at the home on Tallahassee Street.

Tennie Beck Ridenhour

The funeral is Thursday for Tennie Beck Ridenhour, 71, Salisbury, who died Monday (July 26, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Bedsole, pastor, and the Rev. Don Newman, pastor, Gay’s ChapelUnited Methodist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 4520 Old Mocksville Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Harold L. Garwood

The funeral will be Tuesday for Harold L. Garwood, 79, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (July 27, 1999) at his home after a period of declining health.

Born July 25, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Garwood, a son of the late Herman Baxter and Lucy Anna Mesimore Garwood, was educated in the Salisbury schools. He retired after 32 years with Carolina Tractor, Charlotte, where he was truck engine product support manager. He worked as a consultant after he retired.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served in World War II in Japan and stateside. He was a member of Haven Lutheran Church, Fulton Masonic Lodge 99, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post, Huntersville Lions Club and Cowans Ford Country Club.

Survivors include wife M. Barbara Cummings Garwood, whom he married June 21, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio; sons John Hal Garwood, Edmond, Okla., and Robert “Bob” Garwood, Houston, Texas; and daughters Mrs. Homer (Beatrice Garwood)Wilson, Salisbury, and Mrs. William (Anne Garwood) Waggoner, Charlotte.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Haven Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald W. Fink. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury. Masonic rites by Fulton Lodge 99.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

KANNAPOLIS — Larry Alan Harris, 50, 2541 Centergrove Road, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Ethel Jordan Rousey

KANNAPOLIS — Ethel Jordan Rousey, 90, died Tuesday (July 27, 1999) at Big Elm Nursing Center.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Morris E. Holmes

KANNAPOLIS — Morris E. Holmes, 56, 2304 Running Brook Drive, died Monday (July 26, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born April 10, 1942, in Savannah, Ga., Mr. Holmes was a son of Aaron Holmes, Savannah, Ga., and the late Laura Mae Holmes. A graduate of Morris High School, Bronx, N.Y., he was last employed at Days Inn, Salisbury.

A son, Morris Smalls, preceded him in death.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include sons Maurice Holmes, Nebraska, Kevin Santiago, New York City, Damien Argett and Brandon and Bryant Holmes, all of the home, and Ricky Santiago, Virginia; daughters Tanya Holmes, of the home; Desiree and Barbara Smalls, both of Bronx, N.Y., Felecia Smalls, Albany, N.Y., and Juanita Holmes, Savannah, Ga.; brothers Bog Holmes, John Lee and George Holmes, all of New York City, and Joseph Holmes, Savannah, Ga.; sisters Thelma, Verdell, Jesse and Eloise Holmes and Iola Chestnut, all of New York City; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.
