Ocie Navey Looney
KANNAPOLIS - Ocie Navey Looney, 88, First Assembly Living Center, Concord, died Friday (July 30, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after seven years of declining health and two months of serious illness. She was formerly of 2603 Pennsylvania Ave.
Born May 19, 1911, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Looney was the daughter of the late Sarah Bumgardner and Joshua Navey. She worked for Cannon Mills, Plant 1, during the mid-1930s and was later a sales person for Carolina Memorial Park. Eventually she became activity director for Big Elm Retirement Center, Kannapolis, until her retirement in 1989.
Mrs. Looney was a member of Kannapolis West A Street Church of God, where she had taught Sunday school and had been active with the Women’s Ministry.
Her husband, George Cecil Looney, died Nov. 10, 1981.
Survivors include daughter Hilda M. Williams, Asheville; sons George Cecil Looney Jr., North Augusta, Ga., and the Rev. Kenneth R. Looney, Mooresville; sisters Verna Wilson and Beatrice Parker, both of Shelby; seven grandsons; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Kannapolis West A Street Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Sam Crisp and the Rev. Kenneth Looney. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Chapel Mausoleum, Kannapolis.
Visitation: 5-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

David Vernon Harris
MOUNT PLEASANT - David Vernon Harris, 46, 17885 Page Road, died Friday (July 30, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Aug. 3, 1952, in Montgomery County, Mr. Harris was the son of Gertie Burris Harris, Albemarle, and the late James Jarvis Harris. A graduate of the Montgomery County schools, Mr. Harris was a truck driver with ABF Freight Systems. He attended Albemarle Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Linda Efird Harris; son Jeremy Harris, of the home; daughters Jennifer Harris, Ridgecrest, and Tara Huneycutt Black, Mint Hill; brother Charles M. Harris, Norwood, James Ricky “J.R.” Harris, Albemarle, Ronnie Lee Harris, Oakboro; and sister Carol Harris Dennis, Albemarle.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Providence Church of God, Locust, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Hopkins and the Rev. Jerry Ingle. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.
Mildred Cain Blackwell
Mildred Cain Blackwell, 83, of Philadephia, Pa., died Sunday (July 24, 1999).
Born Dec. 7, 1915, in East Spencer, Mrs. Blackwell was the daughter of the late Annie Holt and Baxter Cain. A graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer, Mrs. Blackwell attended Livingstone College.
Her husband, Robert Blackwell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sisters Mollie Brown, Salisbury, and Katherine Mason, New Kinston, Pa.
Services: Services were held at 10 a.m. today, Walter Brown Funeral Home, Philadelphia. Visitation preceded the service.

Marjorie Drye Almond
GRANITE QUARRY — Marjorie Drye Almond, 56, Granite Quarry, died Friday (July 30, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born July 16, 1943, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Almond was the daughter of Eva Trexler Drye of Genesis Elder Care, Salisbury, and the late Herbert Archie Drye.
A 1961 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, she had worked for the Rowan County tax office and as a substitute teacher at East Rowan High School and Erwin Middle School. She was also a homemaker.
Mrs. Almond was a Cabarrus County all-star basketball player and a record high scorer. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women and the Granite Quarry ACT Committee. She was also a former member of the administrative board at Shiloh. She was a former Gray-Y basketball coach and 4-H counselor as well.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Ralph Almond, whom she married March 3, 1963; son George Franklin Almond, Burlington; daughters Tammy Almond Eudy, Mount Pleasant, and Monica Almond Nichols, Wilkseboro; brothers Alvin and Harold Drye, both of Gold Hill; sisters Mrs. Ben (Norma Jean) Goodman, Mrs. Bobby (Faye) Safrit, and Mrs. Joe (Clara Sue)Fraley, all of Rockwell, Hilda Steele, Charleston S.C., Mrs. Thurman (Eleanor) Efird and Mrs. John (Vetra) Culp, both of Gold Hill, Mrs. Joel (Carolyn) McDonald, Wilkesboro, and Mrs. Jimmy (Lois) Fortune, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.
Services:11 a.m. Monday, Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Ervin, pastor of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, and Dr. Kay Gottula, pastor. Burial, Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Gold Hill.

Seleane ‘Suge’ Austin
Seleane “Suge” Owens, Austin, 75, 62 Cedar St., died Friday (July 30, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and four months of serious illness.
Born May 2, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Austin was the daughter of the late Rita Talbert and Marcell Owens. A graduate of the Rowan County schools, she had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 7, after 40 years with the company. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her husband, James Vernon Austin, and a son, Danny Vernon Austin.
Survivors include sons James D. Owens, China Grove, and Gary D. Austin, Woodleaf; brother David G. Owens, Fort Knox, Ky.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Melvin Austin. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.
Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home.
LaToya Denise Everhart
MOORESVILLE - LaToya Denise Everhart, 21, 343 Dalton Drive, died Friday (July 30, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville, after two years of declining health.
Born June 9, 1978, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of Linda Ijames Everhart, Mooresville, and Bobby Ray Everhart, Cleveland. She was a graduate of Mooresville Senior High School and attended Shinnville United Church of Christ.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include sisters Asia Everhart, Cleveland, and Raygesha Everhart, Mooresville.
The family will gather at 1925 Foster Road, Cleveland.

Robert Doyle Hartman
Robert Doyle Hartman, 74, Salisbury, died Friday (July 30, 1999) at the Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, after six years of declining health and two months of serious illness.
Born Jan. 21, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Hartman was the son of Minnie Elizabeth Misenheimer Hartman, Salisbury, and the late Walter Gladstone Hartman.
Mr. Hartman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, retiring in 1967 after 21 years of service. He served in the Pacific during World War IIand also served in Korea.
A Methodist, he was a member of American Legion Post 342 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Joyce Lee Crowell Hartman, whom he married April 15, 1949; son Robert D. Hartman Jr., Salisbury; daughters Diane Hall, Betty Jo Eller, Sherry Eller and Wanda W. James, all of Salisbury; sisters Doris Stiller, Winston-Salem, and Marie Fisher, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Monday, Salisbury National Cemetery, with full military honors by Fort Bragg detail, conducted by a U.S. Army chaplain.
Visitation:10-11 a.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence of daughter Wanda James of Salisbury.

Hugh Hamilton ‘Jake’ Bost
Hugh Hamilton “Jake” Bost, 74, Cauble Road, died Monday (July 26, 1999) at his home after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 11, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Bost was the son of the late Mary Belle Ketner Bost and the late Floyd Bost.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with the Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with the Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal.
Bost was educated in Salisbury city schools and was last employed with Waggoner Realty Co. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Bost was preceded in death by his wife, Emmie Andrews Bost.
Survivors include son Raymond H. Bost, Lakeland, Fla.; brothers Robert E. Bost, Salisbury, and Holland “Bud” Bost, China Grove; sisters Mary Ruth Coley and Lina Bost “Scout” Lomax, both of Salisbury; and Betty Bost Johnson, China Grove.
Services: A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday at Summersett Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Fred Crisco of Maupin Avenue ARP Church. Burial will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday at the National Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council.
Visitation: The family will see friends Monday following the memorial service at Summersett Funeral Home.
LaToyya Denise Everhart
The funeral will be held Monday for LaToyya Denise Everhart, 21, of Dalton Drive, Mooresville. She died Friday (July 30, 1999) after being in declining health for two years.
Also surviving Ms. Everhart are her grandparents, who were not listed in Saturday’s obituary. They are paternal grandmother Elizabeth Everhart, Cleveland; maternal grandmother Linda Jolly, Cincinnati, Ohio; maternal grandmother Lillian Ijames, Mocksville; maternal grandfather Paul Williams, Statesville; and maternal grandfather John Privette, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel of Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by Bishop Woodrow Turner. Burial will be held at Belmont Cemetery in Statesville.

Julius Eugene Burris
OAKBORO- Julius Eugene Burris, 77, 18477 Gaddis Road, died Saturday (July 31, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital.
Born Nov. 28, 1921, Mr. Burris was the son of the late Ephriam Eugene Burris and the late Essie Mae Hinson Burris.
A World War II Army veteran, Burris was a retired fork lift operator at C & A in Albemarle.
Survivors include wife Jewell Louise Efird Burris; sons Julius E. “Buster” Burris, Locust, Boyd Burris, Oakboro, Blaine Burris, Kannapolis; daughters Barbara Coley and Brenda Davis, both of Albemarle; brothers Carl Burris and Grant Burris, both of Oakboro; sisters Margaret Curlee, Charlotte, Sarah Davis and Marene Burris, both of Asheboro, and Rosa Gene Barbee, Oakboro; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Albemarle, with military Rites by Stanly County DAV.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
