Moore, Beverly Cooper

GREENSBORO -- Mr. Beverly Cooper Moore, 91, of 906 Country Club Drive, died Monday morning, April 30, 2001 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday in the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where he was a member and former Vestry member.

Mr. Moore was a native of Greensboro and a founding partner of the law firm Smith Helms Mullis and Moore with offices in Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Atlanta. He became partner emeritus in 1995. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Phi Beta Kappa, and was of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Mr. Moore earned his law degree from Yale University, and began his practice of law in 1934. He was a Life Member of the U.S. 4th Circuit Judicial Conference, and practiced before the U.S. Supreme Court. He is listed in Who's Who in America.

Prior to serving as a major in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WW II, he was elected to the NC General Assembly. He was a founder of Greensboro National Bank which is now Bank of America.

Mr. Moore contributed numerous legal articles throughout his career and was a past president of the Greensboro Bar Association where he was the first recipient of the Distinguished Service Award presented annually by the Greensboro Bar Association. He was the past president of the North Carolina Bar Association, and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Mr. Moore was also a member of the American Bar Association and served in the House of Delegates for 18 years. He was also elected to the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association. He was the past president of the American Counsel Association, a director and past chairman of the National Center of Administrative Justice, past Chairman of the Legal Advisory Board for the Southeastern Legal Foundation and a member of the Association of Bar of New York City, NY, the International Bar Association. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a former trustee of the Practicing Law Institute, former board member of the American Judicature Association, a member of the Institute of Judicial Administration, Federal Judicial Conference, member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Selden Society of London, England.

He served as the first Chairman of the Board of UNC-Greensboro, where he was a member of the Chancellor's Club and established a scholarship in honor of his mother, Mrs. Georgia Cooper Moore at UNCG. Mr. Moore was a former trustee of the University of North Carolina. He was former president of Social Service Exchange, a Trustee of the Greensboro Legal Aid Foundation, Director of the Guilford County Civilian Defense, and Judge Pro Tem of Greensboro Municipal County Court. He was a former Greensboro Jaycee and past Chairman of the Guilford County Democratic Party. He was also the former General Counsel of the Board of Greensboro Daily News.

He is survived by his wife, Irene `Rene` Mitchell Moore, daughter, Mrs. Warren Moore Miller and husband, William J. Miller, Jr. of NY, NY, son Beverly C. Moore, Jr. and wife, Deanna Isley Moore of Washington, DC, sister, Mrs. Polly M. Connelly of Greensboro, and two grandchildren, Alice Moore and Mrs. Caroline Moore Rodier.

Furr, Jack Carlton

CONCORD -- Jack Carlton Furr, 75, of 282 Eastcliff Drive, S.E., died Monday, April 30, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center. He was born August 20, 1925 in Lititz County, Pa., son of the late Mae Bentley Furr and the late Floyd McDaniel Furr.

He was with the U.S. Government and served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy with 31 years of service. He was a member of Stokes Lodge #32 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Charlotte; a veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was awarded a Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, a Bronze Star Medal with Combat `V`, Navy Achievement Medal, Korean Service Medal, a Nations Service Medal, and a National Defense Medal. He was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Rodger Sellers officiating. The family will greet friends after the service. Entombment will be at Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum, Kannapolis.

Mr. Furr is survived by his wife, Katie Cagle Furr of Concord; sons, Jack C. Furr, II of Bulden, AR and William Jeffray Furr of Charlotte, NC; grandsons Jack Furr, III and William Bentley Furr, and granddaughter, Mercedes Roxanne Furr.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 4601 Pitts School Road, Concord, NC 28027.

James Howard Hughes

CHARLOTTE - Mr. James Howard Hughes, 76, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at his home. A native of Fanny County, GA, Mr. Hughes was a son of the late Andy Holland and Lucy Dillard Hughes, and a brother of the late Dorothy Lyman. Mr. Hughes was a US Army veteran of World War II where he received a Purple Heart Award, and was a mechanic on Stone Heavy vehicles for 17 years.

Survivors of Mr. Hughes include his wife, Marie Azlee Honeycutt Hughes, Charlotte; sons and daughters-in-law, William Howard and Ginny Hughes of Mount Holly, Andy Holland and Sherry Hughes of Charlotte; sister, Edna Hughes of Charlotte; grandchildren, Sonya Lowder, Paula Hughes, Natasha Williams, and James Ricky Hughes; and great grandchildren, Shelby Williams, Richard Williams, and Bailey Hughes.

funeral service will be held 11am Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Bumgardner Chapel of McLean-Bumgardner Funeral Home, Belmont, with burial following in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mount Holly, where military rites will be observed. Visitation will be held tonight from 7-8:30pm, at McLean-Bumgardner Funeral Home.

Lutz, Virgil Moore

CATAWBA -- Virgil Moore Lutz, 74, of 5491 Sherrills Ford Road, Catawba, NC died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem.

Born September 26, 1926 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Tim Lutz and Rlee Hoover Lutz.

He was a member of Center United Methodist Church in Catawba where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was a retired foreman of Roadway Construction and worked for Tarheel Superior Paving of Statesville. He was a member of the Catawba Masonic Lodge. He was a US Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen Rudisill Lutz, and brother, Donald Lutz.

Survivors include three daughters & sons-in-law, Pat and Alton Johnson of Catawba, NC, Becky and Kenny Sherrill of Catawba, NC, and Betty and Sam Berryhill of Graham, NC; four brothers, Hansel Lee Lutz of Terrell, NC, Elmer Lutz of Newton, NC, Thad Lutz of Terrell, NC, and Bob Lutz of Denver, NC; seven grandchildren, Kendall Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Lauren Sherrill, Thad Sherrill, Alec Berryhill, Jordan Berryhill, and Tyler Berryhill.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Center United Methodist Church. Rev. Nicholas Rochester will officiate and burial will follow in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 4, 2001 at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM.

Memorials may be made to Boy Scout Fund of Center United Methodist Church, 4945 Sherrills Ford Road, Catawba, NC 28609.

Hughes, James Howard

Mr. James Howard Hughes, 76, died May 2, 2001. Funeral is 11 am Saturday at Bumgardner Chapel of McLean-Bumgardner Funeral Home, interment in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery. Visitation 7-8:30 pm tonight, McLean-Bumgardner Funeral Home.

Howat, Andrew Catterall

Mr. Andrew Catterall Howat, 93, of Charlotte, N.C. died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Mercy Hospital South.

He was born June 19, 1907 in Glascow, Scotland, son of the late James Howat and Isabelle Catterall Howat. Mr. Howat attended Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA. He served as an Engineer with Westinghouse Corporation, working with the development of the American jet engine and nuclear powered turbines. He retired from the Naval Division of the U.S. Government as a Quality Control Engineer. A resident of Charlotte, N.C. since 1978, Mr. Howat was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. A lifelong mason, his hobby was collecting and restoring antique clocks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sophia B. Howat, in 1991.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, May 5, 2001 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Chapel, 3200 Park Road, Charlotte with The Reverend Steven P. Lorimer officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends in the church memorial garden following the service.

Survivors include three children, James Howat, of Hatboro, PA, Walter Howat, of Collinswood, N.J., and Charlotte Fairman, of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 11063, Charlotte, N.C. 28220.

Withers, Ms. Betty

Ms. Betty Withers of 3708 Carlyle Dr. died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Grier funeral service is serving the Withers family.

Critchley, John Henry

PINEHURST -- Mr. John Henry Critchley, 80, died May 3, 2001. Graveside service is 10 am Monday at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Spring Lake, NC. Visitation is 6-8 pm Sunday at Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst.

Melton, Master Jared

Master Jared Melton, 10, of 5962 McNair Road, Charlotte, NC, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2001 at 3:00pm at Calvary Christian Church, 3001 Kilborne Drive, Charlotte, NC, Dr. Roger L. Green, Sr., Pastor of Prayer and Deliverance Tabernacle officiating. Interment will follow at the Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 2:15 to 2:55pm.

Master Jared was born in Charlotte, NC. He was a rising 5th grader at Rama Road Elementary School, a member of Agape' Covenant Temple, a junior deacon, a choir member and an accomplished artist.

Surviving are his parents, Rev. Frank B. Melton and C. Kim Melton of Charlotte, NC; brothers and sisters, Kenneth Melton, Kial Melton, Ms. Keturah Melton, Joseph Melton, all of Charlotte, Ms. Teselyn Melton of Jackson, MS, and F. Jason Melton of St. Louis, MO; grandparents, Suff. Bishop T.J. Melton, Sr. and Margaret Melton of Clarksdale, MS; and grandmother, Janet West of Hampton, VA. Master Jared was preceded in death by his grandfather, John West.

He also leaves to celebrate his victorious life, a host of aunts and uncles and cousins and friends in NY, MS, VA, FL, MI, CA, MO, NC, and SC.

Arriaza, Erica Nazaret

Erica Nazaret Arriaza, 25, of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at home. Funeral services and receiving of friends will be held Friday evening from 7 to 10 PM at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at 1 PM Saturday at Sharon Memorial Park.

Survivors include her husband, Moises Guardudo, her children, Adelina and Ariel Guardudo, and her parents, Emilio Nazaret and Isaura Trejo.

Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home.

Harmon, Belle Pennell

LENOIR -- Mrs. Belle Pennell Harmon, 90, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 10 am Saturday, Brushy Fork Baptist Church, interment in Mountlawn Memorial Park and Gardens. Visitation 6-7:30 pm tonight, Austin and Barnes Funeral Home.

Abraham, Rosa L.

Mrs. Rosa L. Abraham, 72, of Tillman Road, Charlotte, died May 2, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, but are in the care of Alexander Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Templeton, Mary Ward

HARMONY -- Mrs. Mary Ward Templeton, 100, of 211 Cornwall Road, died Thursday, May 3, 2001. Funeral is 2pm Saturday, Winthrop Friends Meeting. Visitation 7-8:30pm Friday (this evening) at Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony, entrusted.

Jenkins, Richard (Dick)

HICKORY -- Mr. Richard (Dick) Jenkins, 76, died May 1, 2001 at his home. Funeral is 3 pm Friday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sloan, Frances Gamble

WAXHAW -- Mrs. Frances Gamble Sloan, 77, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. She was born in Cleveland County, N.C. on September 19, 1923, daughter of the late Clyde D. and Sudie Smith Gamble. She was a retired employee of Celanese Corp.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 A.M. in the Waxhaw United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Mackey. Burial will follow in the Waxhaw Cemetery. The family will receive friends at their residence Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M., 4601 Rehobeth Road, Waxhaw. She is survived by her husband, M.F. `Bud` Sloan; son, M.F. Sloan, Jr. of Fort Wayne, Indiana; daughter, Angela Garrison of Waxhaw; sisters Katherine Sweeney of Charleston, S.C. and Sue Madsen of Claremont, California; 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She was preceded in death by brothers, Joe and John Gamble.
