Harris, Elizabeth Huffman

LEXINGTON -- Elizabeth Huffman Harris, 79, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC after an extended illness. Mrs. Harris (Lib) was born July 20, 1921 in Lexington to the late W.P. Huffman, Sr. and Selba Crotts Huffman.

Funeral services at 3 PM, Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the Piedmont Funeral Home, 405 South Main Street, Lexington, NC, with burial in the Lexington City Cemetery.

Surviving are her only child, Barbara (Butchie) Harris Correll (Bobby) of Hemby Bridge, NC; grandchildren, Bret Correll, Blair Snider (Troy), Brad Stubbs, and Rob MacDonald; great grandchildren, Channing and Olivia Snider and Trevor MacDonald; sisters, Kathleen Jones of Silver Spring, MD, Lois Artz (Pete) of Wilmington, NC, and Ferne MacDonald (Bob) of New Bern, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Harris was sworn in as Lexington's first policewoman in 1955. She served with distinction for 33 years and retired in 1988 with the rank of Lieutenant.

During her years of service to the City of Lexington, she held various administrative offices in the North Carolina Policewomans Association, and served as its President in 1969. In 1973, she was honored as Policewoman of the Year for the State of North Carolina.

The family would like to thank the Staff at Carolinas Medical Center who were involved in the care of Mrs. Harris for the past two years, and a very special `Thank You` for the medical care rendered by Drs. Robert Heyer, Dr. Charles Elliot, Dr. Patrick Burgess, and Dr. Steven Putnam.

Memorials may be made in memory of Elizabeth H. Harris to the Carolinas Health Care Systems Foundation, Charlotte, NC, or the Junior Order Home in Lexington, NC.

The family will receive relatives and friends on May 4 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at the Piedmont Funeral Home, 405 South Main Street, Lexington, NC.

Sigmon, Katie Francis Marie McIntosh

DENVER -- Mrs. Katie Francis Marie McIntosh Sigmon, 79, died may 2, 2001 at Lincoln Medical Center.

Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jan Heermans officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. today at E.F. Drum Funeral Home.

Born in Lincoln County on December 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Robert Alonzo McIntosh and Julia Edith Jenkins McIntosh and wife of the late Gaither Bandy Sigmon. She was Winder/Textiles and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughter & son-in-law, Julia "Judy" A. Gibson & J.W. of Denver; sons & daughters-in-law, Kenneth Sigmon & Anne, Robert "Bob" Sigmon & Sarah, Dean Sigmon & Kay, and G.B. Sigmon & Denise, all of Denver; grandsons & wife, Kenneth "Kenny" Sigmon, II & Kim, and Timothy Sigmon, all of Denver; granddaughters, Dena Yantz & Steve, of Baltimore, MD, Carmen Sigmon and Julie Sigmon, both of Denver; grandsons, Warren Gibson & Leigh Anne of Denver, and Bobby Sigmon of Dallas, NC; great-grandchildren, Kisha Jermalowicz & Glenn, Mathew Sigmon, Donnie Sigmon, Jessica Sigmon, P.J. Sigmon, Dillion Sigmon, B.J. Yance & Samantha, Greylen Gibson and Weston Gibson, all of Denver; step-granddaughter, Rhonda Dellinger of Denver; step-great-grandchildren, Tracy Dellinger, Ginger Halsey, and Brittany Halsey, all of Denver.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Andrea Sigmon.

Burnette, Ruth Lawing

BELMONT -- Ruth Lawing Burnette, 85, of 80 Linestowe Drive, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Meadowood Nursing Center, Gastonia. A native of Lincoln County, NC, she was the daughter of the late D.L. and Gequetta Chapman Lawing; wife of the late Lee Roy Burnette; homemaker and a member of East Belmont Baptist Church.

Survivors are daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Richard Dellinger of Charlotte, Marilyn and James Bigger of New Paris, Pa; six grandchildren including James Galloway and fiancee Susan Vaughn of Belmont, Karen Hardin of Winston-Salem; brothers, Jack Lawing of Belmont and Herman Lawing of Gastonia; sister, Vernice Teague of Pineville; and seven great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 10am Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery, Belmont, Rev. A.A. Bailey and Rev. Jack Fox officiating. Visitation will be from 7-8:30pm Friday at Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont.

Memorials may be made to East Belmont Baptist Church, 501 East Catawba Street, Belmont, NC 28012.

Rumple, Ms. Sherry Efird

SALISBURY -- Ms. Sherry Efird Rumple, 44, died May 1, 2001. Graveside service is 1 pm Saturday in Rowan Memorial Park. Visitation is 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Saturday at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Cox, Hubert `George`

LENOIR -- Mr. Hubert `George` Cox, 67, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Celebration of Life will be held at 3:30 pm Saturday, May 5, at 4658 Ike Starnes Rd., Granite Falls. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home is in charge.

Jenkins, Grace Dawkins

Grace Dawkins Jenkins, 83, of Southport, North Carolina, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 in Southport.

Funeral will be 2:00 PM Friday, May 4, 2001 at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM tonight at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jenkins was born February 7, 1918 in Rockingham, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Vernon Dawkins and Frankie Thompson Dawkins. She had been employed by Highland Park Mills in Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Jenkins, a grandson, Marc Jenkins, a brother, Earl Dawkins, and a sister, Anabell Barrett.

Surviving are her children, Tommy Jenkins of Phoenix, AZ, Charlotte Mae Jenkins of Southport, NC, Darrell Jenkins of Port Royal, FL, Darlene Morgan of Monroe, NC and Gerald Jenkins of Orlando, FL; 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandson; her brother, William Dawkins of Charlotte; and her sister, Alma Watts of Mooresville, NC.

Whitley, Paul

KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Paul Whitley, 76, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. today at Harris Funeral Home.

Matheson, John William

FORT LAWN -- Mr. John William Matheson, Sr., 82, 1357 Malcris Drive, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, South Carolina.

Born February 4, 1919 in Augusta, Georgia, he was the son of the late William and Lillian Jeeter Matheson and was the widower of Martha Mary McFadden Matheson. Mr. Matheson was a retired World War II US Navy Chief Petty Officer, a survivor of USS Aircraft Carrier Princeton, sunk during the battle of Leyte Gulf. He was also a Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Jet Engine Technical Representative. He was a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church, Fort Lawn, for over 25 years and a member of Fleet Reserve Association.

Mr. Matheson is survived by a son, John William Matheson, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Matheson Edwards of Charlotte, NC and Mrs. Mary Matheson Montgomery of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Cleo Provensen of Atascadaro, CA and Mrs. Dorothy Edwards of Orlando, FL; one brother, Mr. Ben Matheson of Houston, Texas; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 5, 2001, from El Bethel United Methodist Church, Fort Lawn, SC, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Wells. Interment, with Military Honors, will be in the El Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday evening.

Memorials may be made to the El Bethel United Methodist Church Love Fund, 3462 Catawba River Road, Fort Lawn, SC 29714.

MARION -- Mr. Jack D. Causby, 75, died May 2, 2001. Funeral 11 am Saturday, Catawba Heights Baptist Church, interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation is 10-11 am Saturday at the church. Westmoreland Funeral Home is in charge.

Tuttle, Edith Alfreda

KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Edith Alfreda Tuttle, 87, died May 1, 2001. Service is 12 Noon Saturday at First Covenant Church, Ashtabula. Visitation is 10 a.m. until the hour of service. Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, Ashtabula is in charge of arrangements.

Cherry, Ms. Cheryl Denise

Ms. Cheryl Denise Cherry, 39, of 3416 Oak Arbor Lane, Apt. F, Charlotte, died April 27, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral is 12 noon Saturday at Parkwood CME Zion Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Rayfied Medcalf officiating. Burial will be in Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens, Charlotte. Visitation is 12 noon Saturday at the church.

Born in Charlotte, NC, Ms. Cherry was an Administrator with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. She graduated from Garinger High in 1980 and attended Rutledge College until 1984.

Surviving are her son, Mr. Thomas Cherry; daughter, Ms. Dominique Cherry; mother, Mrs. Louise Cherry; father, Mr. Harold Cherry, Sr.; brothers, Mr. Harold Cherry, Jr. and Mr. Roderick Cherry; sisters, Mrs. Gloria Robinson and Rhonda Cherry, all of Charlotte; and niece, Shannon Cherry-Corley of Gastonia.

Memorials may be sent to Parkwood CME Zion Church, 802 Tom Hunter Road, Charlotte, NC 28213.

Horton, Carl Alex

KERSHAW -- Mr. Carl Alex Horton, Jr., age 59, of 1662 Horton Rollins Road, died Tuesday evening, May 1, 2001 at Marion County Medical Center as the result of an automobile accident. He was born September 21, 1941 in Kershaw County, the son of the late Mr. Carl Alexander Horton, Sr. and Mrs. Annie Lou Query Horton and was the husband of Mrs. Ina Belk Horton. Mr. Horton was a graduate of Kershaw High School and earned the Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He attended the Citadel and the University of South Carolina and served as SP5 in the Army National Guard. Mr. Horton was a foreman for Georgia Pacific Company for 38 years until his retirement in June 2000. He and his wife owned and managed Horton Leasing & Rentals on Lake Wateree and was a member of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir.

Mr. Horton is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ina Belk Horton of the home, 2 daughters, Amelia Louann Horton of Columbia, and Lisa Horton Bertram and her husband Mark of California, 1 granddaughter, Amy Bertram of Cheshire, England, 2 stepsons, Marion A. Sims of Lancaster and J. Wendell Sims of Rock Hill.

The funeral service for Mr. Horton will be 4:00 pm Saturday afternoon, May 5, 2001 at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church by Rev. Gene Ghent. Burial will follow at Kershaw City Cemetery. The Family of Mr. Horton will receive friends from 6:00- 8:00 pm Friday evening, May 4, 2001 at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 and suggest memorial contributions to Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, Piano Fund, Highway 97, PO Box 170, Liberty Hill, SC29074.

Hartley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Horton.

Riley, Eula Mae

HAMLET -- Mrs. Eula Mae Riley, 58, died April 28, 2001. Funeral 2 pm Saturday, St. Stephens AME Zion Church; interment, Dobbins Heights Memorial Cemetery. Visitation 7:30-8:30 pm tonight, the church. Nelson Funeral Home in charge.

Maness, Gene Thomas

TROY -- Mr. Gene Thomas Maness, 66, died May 2, 2001. Funeral 2 pm Saturday, First Wesleyan Church, interment in church cemetery. Visitation 7-9 pm tonight at the church, other times at the residence. Pugh-Troy Funeral Home is in charge.

Brown, William

HAMLET -- Mr. William Brown, Jr., 70, died April 30, 2001. Funeral is 3 pm Saturday at Ellerbe Grove Missionary Baptist Church, interment in church cemetery. Visitation is 6-7 pm Friday at the church. Nelson Funeral Home is in charge.

Carter, Billy Eugene

SALISBURY -- Mr. Billy Eugene Carter, Sr., 67, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 11 am Saturday at First Freewill Baptist Church, interment in Brookhill Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation 7-8:30 pm tonight, Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell.

Reavis, Paul Ervin

Paul Ervin Reavis, Sr., age 80 of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at ISH Nursing Center. He was the son of the late Burton Fascett Reavis and Mae Gilland Reavis of Statesville, N.C.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001 at McEwen funeral service Pineville Chapel, with visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.

Mr. Reavis was retired from American Bakery (Merita) Co. after 35 years of service. He was a salesman of old books and magazines and a Red Cross volunteer during his retirement years. He served in the Infantry during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Hamby Reavis; 1 daughter; 1 son; 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
