LILESVILLE -- Mrs. Ida Mae Diggs, 86, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Centenary AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Westview Memorial Park, Wadesboro. Smith's Funeral Home, Wadesboro is in charge.

Lowery, Thomas Jackson

MARSHVILLE -- Mr. Thomas Jackson Lowery, 62, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at his residence. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral. The family will be at the home of his sister at 2615 High Ridge Church Road, Marshville.The son of the late Worth and Kate Huggins Lowery, he is survived by his sister, Martha Thomas of Marshville; a brother, William Lowery of Pageland, SC; niece, Barbara Boggs of Stanley, NC; nephews, Steve Thomas of Ohio, Mike Thomas of Charlotte, Ernest Lowery and Travis Lowery, both of Pageland; and a host of good friends.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5116.

Beach, Margaret Miller

BOONE -- Mrs. Margaret Miller Beach, 83, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 2 pm today at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 12:30-2 pm today at the funeral home. Barney Hampton funeral service, Inc. is in charge.

Margaret Hager Nelson

Mrs. Margaret Hager Nelson, 83, of Charlotte, died Friday, May 4, 2001 at her residence. Born June 3, 1917 in Mecklenburg County, she was daughter of the late Ivey P. Hager and Elizabeth Porter Hager. She was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church and teacher of the Primary Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Charlotte Lupus Chapter LFA and volunteer in the 4-H, Girl and Boy Scouts. Mrs. Nelson graduated from Long Creek High School and Spencerian Secretarial School. Employment included Blankenship & Booth Attorneys At Law, Lance, Inc., Mundy's Grocery, and Mecklenburg County Personnel.

Surviving is her husband, John M. Nelson, Sr.; son, John M. Nelson, Jr. `Skeet` of Huntersville; daughter, Becky Jean Nelson of Charlotte; sisters, Beatrice Hager Mundy and Esther Hager Oehler, both of Charlotte; and grandson, Logan Nelson.

funeral service will be 2:00 pm Sunday, May 6, 2000 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church with Rev. J.E. Wayland, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1429 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Bennett, Donald Braxton

ALBEMARLE -- Mr. Donald Braxton Bennett, 54, died May 4, 2001. Arrangements are incomplete. Smith Funeral Home is in charge.

Hartman, Theodore Columbus

BELWOOD -- Mr. Theodore Columbus Hartman, 94, died Friday, May 4, 2001 at Hospice at Wendover.

funeral service is 3 pm Sunday at Normans Grove Baptist Church, with Reverend Cecil Buff officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held starting at 2:30 pm until the time of service at the church. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 pm this evening at Stamey Funeral Home.

Born in Cleveland County, Mr. Hartman was a son of the late Quincy and Elizabeth Hartman. He was a former farmer and retired in 1968 from the Cleveland County School system, having worked for 17 years in maintenance at Belwood School. Mr. Hartman was a member of Normans Grove Baptist church in Belwood, where he was former deacon and choir member. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Durham Hartman and Swain Hartman, his brother and sister-in-law Irod Hartman and Hazel Hartman, his sisters and brothers-in-law Getty and Grady Davis, Myrtle and Raymond Warlick and L.O.E. and Howard Dayberry, his sister Velma H. Sisson, and his sisters-in-law Janois (Mrs. Byron) Hartman and Grace (Mrs. Jareen) Hartman.

Mr. Hartman is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruby Dayberry Hartman of Belwood; his daughters Jewell `Judy` Panther and her husband Horace of Belwood, Arline Hicks and her husband J. B. Hicks, Sr. of Easley, SC, Joyce Lutz of Belwood; two brothers, Jareen Hartman of Gastonia and Byron Hartman of Toluca; two sisters, Vera H. Glenn and her husband Alvin of Belwood, and Ruth H. Anthony and her husband Hillard of Vale; sister-in-law Willie Mae (Mrs. Swain) Hartman of Vale; seven grandchildren, J. B. (Buddy) Hicks, Jr. and his wife Susan of Easley, SC, Brent Hartman Hicks of Easley, SC, Sarah Panther Bush and her husband Danny of Tomball, TX, Scott Panther of Hattiesburg, MS, and Lori Lutz, Lindy Lutz, and Elizabeth Lutz McIntyre, all of Belwood; as well as eight great grandchildren, Adam, Amanda, Ashley and Andrew Bush, Caroline and Grace Hicks, and Sarah and Rebecca McIntyre.

Memorials may be made to Normans Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Lynn Willis, 309 Casar-Belwood Road, Lawndale, NC 28090, or to Hospice at Wendover, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

HICKORY -- Mr. L. Scott Hanna, 86, died May 4, 2001. Funeral is 3 pm Sunday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 pm tonight at Bass-Smith Funeral Home of Hickory.

Griffin, Dorothy Boush

Mrs. Dorothy Boush Griffin, 46, of Charlotte, died Thursday evening, May 3, 2001, at her residence following a lingering illness. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Monday, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM in the church chapel prior to the Mass.

Florists are asked to please deliver floral arrangements directly to the church chapel beginning at 9:00 AM Monday.

Bost, Claude White

SALISBURY -- Mr. Claude White Bost, 86, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Organ Lutheran Church. Visitation is 6:30-8 p.m. today at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.

Burke, Faye

HICKORY -- Faye Burke, 89, died May 4, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Goodman, Virginia Frances

CONCORD -- Virginia Frances Goodman, age 93, of 218 Tasseys Place, died Friday, May 4, 2001 at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

funeral service will be 3:00 PM Saturday, Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rebecca Setzer will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the funeral home, and will be at 8707 Oldenburg Drive, Mount Pleasant the remaining time.

She was born in Cabarrus County, May 27, 1907, daughter of the late Paul and Rosa Welch Goodman. She was retired from Cook Packing Plant and Kaiser Roth Hosiery, and was a member of Flow-Harris Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her brother, Marvin L. Goodman of Concord; grandsons, Eddie and wife, Dianne of Mount Pleasant, and Wayne and wife, Debbie of Harrisburg; 6 great-grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

Wilkinson Funeral Home is handling the arrangements of Virginia Goodman.

Moore, Edward Earl `Eddie'

SPINDALE -- Edward Earl `Eddie' Moore, 67, died Friday, May 4, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday at Crowe's Funeral Chapel. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Sunday at Crowe's Funeral Home.

Doctor Franklin (D.F.) Phillips
IN MEMORY OF
Doctor Franklin (D.F.) Phillips was born November 9, 1847 In Cabarrus County and died January 28, 1922 in Charlotte. D.F. Phillips married Laura Catherine Stough on January 13, 1870. They had six children; James Edgar, Joseph Franklin, Elizabeth Luola, Dwight Wade, Lester Conrad, and Ella Mae. He was a farmer when he joined the Confederate Army at age 17. Upon joining on November 17, 1864 he became a member of the 1st Battalion North Carolina Junior Reserves Company D and served to the end of the war. D.F. returned to Cabarrus County after the end of the War Between the States and resumed his farming. In 1885 he purchased 55 acres off Randolph Road at McAway Road. After his death in 1922 his wife Laura Catherine, continued to work this farm until 1936 when the land was sold. D.F. and his wife are buried at Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. This memorial is in his memory and for his service to the Confederacy, from his Great Grandson, L. Steven Phillips of Charlotte.

Gluesing, Alvina C.

Alvina C. Gluesing, 97, Charlotte, formerly of DeWitt, Iowa died Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Survivors include a niece Sandra Kolker, Charlotte. Visitation and Funeral will be held in Iowa. Schultz funeral service, DeWitt, Iowa is assisting the family.

Wheeler, Bliss McCall

Mrs. Bliss McCall Wheeler, of Titusville, FL, formerly of Charlotte, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Parrish Medical Center, Titusville, FL. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Wheeler will be conducted 10:00 AM Monday, May 7, 2001 from the graveside at Sharon Memorial Park with the Reverend David Green officiating. Friends may visit with the family of Mrs. Wheeler this afternoon from 3:00 - 4:00 PM at the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen funeral service, 727 East Morehead Street.

Mrs. Wheeler was born in the Pleasant Plains community, daughter of the late J.W. Killough and Cora King Killough. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had retired from the Mecklenburg County ABC Board. The beloved aunt of Norma Godfrey, she made her home in Titusville, FL, with her niece, Norma Godfrey and husband Stephen, and her two great-nieces and two great-nephews. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive Mrs. Wheeler. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wheeler was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers, her half-sister and her half brother.

Memorial contributions in the name of Mrs. Bliss McCall Wheeler may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Trade Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Moses, Annie Fredell

KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Mrs. Annie Fredell Moses, 75, died May 5, 2001. She was a homemaker. She was the wife, of Cliff Moses and the daughter of the late William Robert Fredell and Bessie Self Fredell.

She is survived by her husband; brothers, Manuel Fredell of Vale, Coy Fredell of Kings Mountain, Foy Fredell of Shelby, and Roy Fredell of Kings Mountain; sister, Mildred Hamrick of Indian Trail, Virgie Campbell of Kings Mountain, and Essie Bivins of Lincolnton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Agnes Bowen.

She was a member of Wallace Grove Baptist Church.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Wallace Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Stamey Funeral Home Monday and at other times the family will be at the home of Virgie Campbell, 110 North Deal Street, Kings Mountain.

Davis, Willie D.

The Rev. Willie D. Davis, was in Rembert, South Carolina on July 19, 1920 to Samuel Mack Davis and Janie Lucrecia Davis. He departed this life and entered into eternal life on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center after years of various illnesses. At a young age, after the death of his mother, he moved with his family to Shelby, NC and was educated in the public schools there. He worshipped with his family at the Eskridge Grove Baptist Church in Shelby. As a young man he joined the United States Army and went on to serve in World War II. During his war he was sent to France and to Africa. When the war was over he returned to his home in Shelby, NC. It was in Shelby that he met Lillie Peake who was to become his loving and devoted wife. After marrying he moved with his family to Charlotte, NC. He worked for many companies until he retired from the City of Charlotte in 1977. In Charlotte, he worshipped at Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. In 1969 he accepted God's call into the ministry. After going into the ministry he attended Teamer School of Religion where he received his Divinity Degree. He pastored Rock Hill Baptist Church in Salisbury, North Carolina. Rev. Davis loved the Lord and his first question to everyone that he met was `What church do you go to?' That question would open the door for him to do what God called him to do, `minister to the lost.'

Rev. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Janie Davis, brothers: Johnnie Lewis Davis, James Davis, Bob Davis and Tommy Davis, sister, Mary Jane Davis, son, Willie Davis, Jr. and daughter Gwendolyn A. Davis.

He leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Lillie P. Davis; seven sons: William Davis of Manhattan, NY, Doug Davis, Wesley Davis, Chris Davis, Stanley Davis, Derrick Davis all of Charlotte, NC and Joseph Davis (wife Kanika) of Raleigh, North Carolina; two daughters Brenda Davis of Atlanta, GA and Joann Richardson (husband Greg) of Charlotte, NC; three brothers: Samuel Davis (wife Ada) of Nashville, TN, Herman Davis (wife Joan) of Shelby, NC and Hoover Davis (wife Bea) of Washington, DC; twenty-three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Monday at Temple Chapel Baptist Church, Charlotte with The Rev. Gene E. Gilmore, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Eskridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Shelby, NC. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. May 6, 2001 at Temple Chapel Baptist Church.

Mann, Eva Black `Hoppy'

CHINA GROVE -- Mrs. Eva Black `Hoppy' Mann, 79, died May 4, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home.

Irvin, Evelyn Tolbert

MORGANTON -- Evelyn Tolbert Irvin, 80, died May 4, 2001. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the home of Mike Irvin and one hour prior to the funeral. Sossoman Funeral Home in charge.

Morrow, Charles Wilson

GASTONIA -- Mr. Charles Wilson Morrow, 49, of 1663 Lowell Bethesda Rd., died Friday, may 4, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Morrow was a native of Mecklenburg County, son of the late Norman and Elizabeth Creech Morrow. He was a retired electrician with Bryant Electrical Repair Co., graduate of Frank L. Ashley High School, attended Gaston College and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia.

Survivors include his wife: Sheila Hunnicutt Morrow of the home; brother and sister-in-law, N. Patrick and Jenny Morrow of Gastonia; nephews, Norman Morrow, Sam Morrow, Tim, Craig, Mark, Ryan, and Jason Hunnicutt; father and mother-in-law, James and Claudine Hunnicutt of Gastonia.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Sunday, May 6, 2001 at McLean Funeral Directors Founders Chapel.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Crisis Assistance Ministry, 805 W. Airline Ave. Gastonia 28052.

McLean Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
