Miller, Hugh Hunt

Hugh Hunt Miller, died of cancer in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday, May 6, 2001. He was predeceased in 1997 by his wife of fifty years, Janice Phinney Miller. He was the proud father of five children, John David Miller of Birmingham, AL, Geoffrey Charles Miller of Sharon, MA, Dr. Martha Miller Taylor of San Francisco, CA, Elizabeth Hunt Marburger of Alexandria, VA, and Stephen Phinney Miller of Charlotte, NC, and their spouses. In addition, he is survived by 9 grandchildren and other relatives.

Hugh was born in Griffin, GA on February 11, 1925, but spent most of his early life in Ellerbe, NC where he graduated from Ellerbe High School in 1942. His love of science took him to the University of North Carolina in Chapel HIll where he was graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1946.

After he graduated from college, he worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee as a research and industrial chemist from 1946 through 1955. From 1955 through 1958, he was chief of a research group in the Division of High Temperature Chemistry at the Curtiss-Wright Company. From 1958 through 1961, he was the Director of Research, Division of Radiation and Radioisotopes at the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, DC. From 1961 through 1967, he was Co-Founder and President of Numec Instruments and Controls Company in Apollo, PA. From 1967 through 1970, he was Vice President-Marketing at Waters Associates in Framingham, MA.

The next seventeen years of his career were in Washington, D.C., where he held leadership positions in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). These included Executive Director of the Office of the Foreign Secretary, Executive Officer and Executive Director of External Affairs. In 1987, Mr. Miller was presented the Distinguished Service Commendation by the NAE. In an advisory capacity, Mr. Miller worked with the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of State, the Agency for International Development, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He was a trustee for the National Technology University.

In 1979, he was presented the Royal Commemorative Medal by King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden for `distinguished services in the futherance of Swedish-American relations.` In 1985, in recognition of his international accomplishments, he was elected as a foreign member to the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 1989, he was knighted with the Royal Swedish Order of the North Star by King Carl Gustaf XVI.

In 1994, he and Janice moved to Pinehurst, NC. Hugh joined Thermal Metal Inc. in Aberdeen, NC where he assisted in their marketing efforts. He was a vestry member of St. Mary the Magdalene parish in Seven Lakes, NC. During the last year of his life, he moved to Charlotte, NC to be closer to his family.

By his example, Mr. Miller instilled in his children and those around him, the great value of education and kindness to everyone. His passion of classical music, and gardening were ever present in all the homes the family lived in. Other pursuits were international travel, collecting artwork created by his artistic friends, and entertaining. He loved the quiet and beauty of the Sandills area, and also the North Carolina coastline, where family gatherings occurred.

A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, June 9 at 2 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 350 East Massachusetts Avenue, Southern Pines, NC, 910-692-3171. There will be a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Hugh Hunt Miller Memorial Fund, Ellerbe Jr. High School, Science & Technology Departments, c/o Fidelity Bank, P.O. Box 459, Ellerbe, NC 28338.

Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center was entrusted with arrangements.

Abernethy, Ila Dellinger

DENVER -- Mrs. Ila Dellinger Abernethy, age 98 of Campground Road in Denver died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the home of her daughter. Her funeral service will be 3:00 PM Saturday at Denver Baptist Church. Her funeral service will be conducted by her grandsons, Dr. Ron Lynch, Rev. Ernest Sisk and Jeff Harris. Burial will follow in Denver Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Abernethy was born on August 9, 1902. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Emma Dellinger, husband, Horace D. Abernethy, a daughter, Frances Lynch, a son, Richard abernethy, a grandson, Michael Lynch, two brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors include: two daughters, Virginia and son-in-law, Bobby Harris of Pumpkin Center, NC, Marilyn and son-in-law, W.G. Reid of Maiden, NC; on son, H.N. and daughter-in-law, Mary Abernethy of Pumpkin Center, NC; five granddaughters, eight grandsons; thirty great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Denver Baptist Church Building fund, PO Box 383, Denver, NC 28037 or Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Benton, Charles Lamar

MONROE -- Mr. Charles Lamar Benton, Sr., 62, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at his home.

Born February 1, 1939 in Union County, he was a son of John David Benton and the late Ethel D. Benton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 6 PM from the graveside of Lakeland Memorial Park, by Reverend Kenneth Fink.

In addition to his father, Mr. Benton is survived by his spouse, Ellen O. Benton of the home; two daughters, Carmen Fowler and Tena Deese, both of Monroe; a son, Charles (Chuck) Benton, Jr.; a sister, Paulette Spurgeon of Lillington, NC; half brother, David Benton of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Christopher Fowler, Bobby Deese, Justin Fowler, Brooke Deese, Kaitlyn Fowler, Charles Benton, III and Bill Benton.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from the home. They suggest memorials be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 909 Circle Drive, Monroe, NC 28110, or to the Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.

Sain, Myrtle Laverne Lutz

VALE -- Mrs. Myrtle Laverne Lutz Sain, 68, of 6881 Gracie Lane in Vale died Monday, May 28, 2001.

Her funeral service will be 2 PM Thursday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Reverend Ronald Doub officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 PM at the church.

Mrs. Sain was born on September 25, 1932 in Catawba County to the late Evan M. and Sarah Hudson Lutz. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Linton, Clarence and Loy Lutz and one sister, Margaret Lockamy. She was retired after 30 years of service from the Employment Security Commission. Mrs. Sain was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Walter E. Sain of the home; two sons, Gary W. Sain, Sr. of Concord, and Daryl L. Sain of Vale; two brothers, Alan Lutz and Vance Lutz, both of Vale; three sisters, Gladys Shull and Edith Hull, both of Vale, and Bobbie Bowman of Lawndale, NC; and three grandchildren, Gary W. Sain, Jr., Amanda E. Sain, and Michael E. Sain.

Warlick Funeral Home of Lincolnton is in charge of arrangements.

Barber, Rachel Morris

SALISBURY -- Mrs. Rachel Morris Barber, 71, died May 27, 2001. Funeral is 2 PM Wednesday, Enon Baptist Church, interment in church cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 pm tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Ryan, Jeffrey Robert

Mr. Jeffrey Robert Ryan, 44, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Wednesday, May 30 at Memorial United Methodist Church, 4012 Central Avenue. Reverend Keith Bingham and Reverend Myra McGuire will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the church parlor.

Born June 2, 1956 in Miami, FL, Jeffrey was raised in Charlotte. He was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, and received a Chemistry Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jeffrey was a sales manager with AT&T;, having been employed there for 16 years. He was an avid golfer and loved playing at Raintree Country Club.

Survivors include his mother, Jean O. Ryan of Charlotte; father, John J. Ryan of Miami, FL; sister, Janet R. Green and her husband, Tom of Charlotte; two brothers, Jack Ryan of Monroe and Jim Ryan of Charlotte; and a special nephew, Jack Ryan, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are by the Wilson Chapel of Hankins and Whittington funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road.

Bush-Markuske, Susan Clair

Susan Clair Bush-Markuske, 61, of Charlotte died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at home. Services are private. Her survivors include her husband Richard Markuske, 4 children and 1 grandchild. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home.

Fowlkes, Robert Richard

Mr. Robert Richard Fowlkes, 71, of Charlotte, died May 26, 2001 at White Oak Manor. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel.

Funderburke, Eugene Evan

Eugene Evan Funderburke, 68, of Roanoke and formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001. His father, Evan William Funderburke, and a sister, Annie Laura McKinney, predeceased him. Eugene was a long time member of Roanoke First Church of the Nazarene where he served in many capacities. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a sales representative in the furniture industry for more than forty years. An accomplished golfer, Eugene competed in numerous golf tournaments throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Maxine Henson Funderburke; his mother, Atholene Funderburke of Charlotte; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Leon Mann of Charlottesville, Va; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Debbie Funderburke of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law Leslie and David Johnson of Annapolis, Md; grandchildren Kathryn and Max Mann; Kara, Dana, and Leah Johnson. ALso surviving are brother and sister-in-law Edward and Nancy Funderburke; brother, William C. Funderburke; brothers-in-law Ned Henson and wife Judy, Roger Henson and wife Sharon; sister-in-law Frances Henson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Roanoke First Church of the Nazarene, 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001. The Rev. Earl Robertson will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Those preferring memorials, please consider Roanoke First Church of the Nazarene, 728 Highland Avenue SE, Roanoke, Va 24013. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's South Chapel.

Culp, Ada Snipes

LANCASTER -- Mrs. Ada Snipes Culp, of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was born March 20, 1908, in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Mr. David Dock Snipes and Mrs. Wren McAteer Snipes.

Mrs. Culp was a long time member of the Shiloh Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, where she had served as a charter member of the Mollie Draffin Circle, a past president of the Patrick Sabbath School Class, a member of the Women of Shiloh, and the Shiloh-Waxhaw Bible Society. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 146, and was a former member of the Lancaster Evening Garden Club. Mrs. Culp had retired after 45 years at Springs Industries and then worked for many years at the Cauthen Flower Shop in Lancaster.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. from the Shiloh Association Reformed Presbyterian Church by the Rev. David Lauren and the Rev. Jerry Helms, nephew of Mrs. Culp. Interment will be in the Shiloh A.R.P. Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Culp was preceded in death by her husband, Hazel Brown Culp, and is survived by her daughter, Sarah Frances Culp Slough and her husband, Robert of Rock HIll; three grandchildren, Sarah Wren Wienges, husband John Othniel Wienges and children, John, Jr. , Trezevant and Frances Wren all of St. Matthews; Robert Culp Slough, wife Sally Whitley Slough and daughter Caroline Whitley Slough all of Rock Hill; and David Christopher Slough and wife Heather Garris Slough of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Snipes Small of Lancaster; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Park Avenue Day Care Center, 359 Park Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to the Shiloh A.R.P. Church, 346 Shiloh-Unity Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2001 at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel and other times at the home, 2575 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.

Osborne, Beulah Robinson

LANCASTER -- Mrs. Beulah Robinson Osborne, 81, of 1404 Somerset Drive, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 in Tanglewood Health Care, Ridgeway, SC.

Mrs. Osborne was a daughter of the late Simon Wright and Ruby Rachel Tranium Robinson, and was the widow of Ethridge Zeb Osborne. She was a former employee of Bob Williams Cleaners.

Mrs. Osborne is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Linda O.) Adams and Mrs. Herman W. (Nona O.) Noblitt, both of Lancaster; two brothers, Buford L. Robinson and Paul Robinson, both of Atlanta; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Corbett of Memphis, TN, Mrs. Louise Wehunt of Atlanta, GA, and Mrs. Joyce Holland of Riply, MS; seven grandchildren, Todd and Danielle Ray of Malibu, CA, Thai Ray of Blacksburg, VA, Brian Sean Adams of Lancaster, Jeremy Brent Adams of Columbia, Erin and Conner Tindal of Lancaster, Angi and Christian Covington of Todd, NC, and Jason and Melissa A. Noblitt of Charlotte, NC; seven great grandchildren, Asia Ray, Phoenix Ray, Sunshine Covington, Christian Covington, Forest Covington, Summer Covington and Davis Noblitt; as well as her special friends Robin Hollifield of Marion, NC and Libby Talbert of Lancaster.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 PM Wednesday afternoon from Mahaffey Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Lancaster Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 6-8 PM this evening.

Craig, Beverly Ann

ROCK HILL -- Mrs. Beverly Ann Craig, 54, of 3880 Landon Lane passed away Friday, May 25, 2001 at her home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001 from The Chapel of Bass Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Tinker officiating burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Park.

Born in Laurens, SC she was the daughter of the late Claude Henry Whitman an the late Thelma Mae Johnson Whitman. Mrs. Craig worked for Piedmont Distribution out of Charlotte, NC.

Survivors are husband, Dennis Lee `D.L.' Craig, Sr.; two sons, Gary Dean Hunter of Rock Hill and Dennis Lee Craig, Jr. of Rock Hill; 3 brothers, Donald Whitman of Rock Hill, Charles Whitman of Easley, SC, and Vernon Whitman of Kings Mt., NC; one sister, Carolyn Janette Whetstine of McConnells; and one granddaughter, Brittany E. Hunter of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2001 at Bass Funeral HOme and other times at the home.

Beaver, Alexis Rebecca

LINCOLNTON -- Alexis Rebecca Beaver, infant daughter of Gary and Stacey Smith Beaver, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Lincoln Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 4pm Wednesday at Zion Cemetery with Rev. David Jones officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, 1203 Park Circle in Lincolnton.

Survivors include parents, Gary and Stacey Smith Beaver, of the home; two sisters, Lindsey Weaver and Micah Beaver of the home; maternal grandparents, Rev. Gary and Janice Faye Smith of Lincolnton, NC, and Wayne and Pat Hendrick of Vale, NC; maternal great-grandparents, Coye and Ruby Sain of Vale, NC, and Percy Hendrick of Maiden, NC; paternal grandparents, Max and Carolyn Beaver of Lincolnton, NC; paternal great-grandparents, Hubert and Mary Lee Avery of Lincolnton, NC.
