Blume, Gerald

Mr. Gerald Blume, 74, of Charlotte, passed away May 23, 2001 at White Oak Manor.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 7-8:30 PM at the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen funeral service. funeral service will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, May 26, at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Reverend Mike Campbell officiating. Interment to follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The complete obituary notice will appear in the Friday edition of The Observer. Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Charlotte Chapel.

Traylor, Thomas Madison `Mack`

BLACKSTOCK -- Mr. Thomas Madison `Mack` Traylor, 68, of 1582 Cornwell Road, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at his residence.

Funeral is 4 PM Thursday at Blackstock First Baptist Church, with Reverend Jimmy Lowe and Reverend Dale Roddey officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm this evening at Barron Funeral Home.

Born in Chester County, SC, on July 17, 1932, Mr. Traylor was a son of the late Conrad M. Traylor and the late Eva (Holder) Traylor. He was retired from Duke Power with 29 years of service. After retiring in 1988, he fulfilled a life-long dream of becoming a licensed contractor. Mr. Traylor was a member of Blackstock First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a mason and a member of Blackstock Masonic Lodge #180. He was founder of Blackstock Bluegrass, and an avid bluegrass performer himself. Mr. Traylor was also a member of Blackstock Young Farmers. He was a graduate of Blackstock High School, and served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Traylor is survived by his wife, Leila (Hood) Traylor; one son, Daryl Thomas Traylor of Blackstock, SC; three brothers, Dewey C. Traylor and Frank W. Traylor, both of Blackstock, and Paul W. Traylor of Macon, GA; one sister, Connie T. Gwin of Blackstock; as well as five grandchildren, Ashley Traylor, Jamie Traylor and Anna Gaughen, all of Okinawa, Japan, and Madison Traylor and Jason Sloan, both of Chester, SC.

Memorials may be made to Blackstock First Baptist Church Van Fund, 3693 Bethlehem Road, Chester, SC 29706, or to Hospice of York County, 325 South Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Renfrow, Evelyn B.

Evelyn B. Renfrow, 70, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital. She was born October 28, 1930 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2001 at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1020 Providence Road with The Reverend Dr. Julian M. Aldridge, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Myers Park United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Renfrow Rick and Bunny Rogers; Bunny's husband Charlie and their son Brian Rogers.

Memorial contributions may be sent in memory of Evelyn Renfrow to the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, c/o the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233, or to Myers Park United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 1020 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.

McMiller, Jerry Lee

Mr. Jerry Lee McMiller, 81, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died Sunday, May 20, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at King's Funeral Home Chapel in Charlotte. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Richburg, South Carolina. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Mr. McMiller, a native of Kershaw County, South Carolina, was a retired custodian with the school system. Having been predeceased by his wife, the late Kathleen J. McMiller, Mr. McMiller's survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Lizzie M. Goode (Gerona), Mrs. Willie C. Bailey, Mrs. Addie R. Boyce (Noah), Ms. Evelyn Straite, Mrs. Doris Clinkscales (Bernard), Mrs. Virginia Godfrey (James), and Mrs. Janice McMiller Harris, all of Charlotte, North Carolina; five sons, James McMiller, Calvin McMiller (Shirley), John McMiller (Louise), Bennie McMiller, and Terry McMiller (Irish), all of Charlotte, North Carolina; four sisters, Janie Talford of Charlotte, North Carolina, Mary Hayes, Lillie Crome, and Elizabeth Cureton, all of Rock Hill, South Carolina; three brothers, Grady McMiller of Gastonia, North Carolina, George Miller of Winnsboro, South Carolina, and Nathaniel Miller of Rock Hill, South Carolina; forty-two grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; eight sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; a God Son, James H. Miller (Ella); a God Daughter, Gail McVay; and a host of other relatives, and many friends.

King's Funeral Home, Charlotte is serving Mr. McMiller's family.

Mullis, Kevin L.

Mr. Kevin L. Mullis, 31, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A funeral service will be held today at 3:30 PM at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:30 PM today at the funeral home.

Mr. Mullis was born April 28, 1970, in Charlotte, NC. He was a 1988 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School where he participated on the baseball team as the pitcher. Kevin was the owner of a landscaping business at Ocean Isle, NC until recently moving to Charlotte to open his new business, Mullis Roofing. He enjoyed playing golf.

Mr. Mullis is survived by his father, Mike Mullis of Charlotte; mother, Jeanie Mullis of Gastonia, NC; sister, Michelle Hale and her husband, Michael of Charlotte; brother, Michael Jamie Mullis of Charlotte; nephew, Michael Jacob Hale; maternal grandmother, Mrs. J.Y. Brown of Huntersville, NC; and numerous other relatives.

Austin, Ms. Rowena

MARSHVILLE -- Ms. Rowena Austin, 79, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Union Regional Medical Center. Her funeral will be on Saturday, May 26 at 11am at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Rocky Carpenter will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday night from 7:30 - 9pm at the Austin home on White Store Road.

Ms. Austin was the daughter of the late Bogan B. and Christine McRae Austin. She was a teacher in the Charlotte and High Point Public Schools.

She is survived by her brother, William `Bill` Austin of Marshville; one niece, and one nephew. Memorials may be sent, in her memory, to Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Roseboro, Alice

Alice Roseboro , age 88, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Valley Nursing Center, Taylorsville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Alexander Funeral Home is in charge.

Harbinson, Mary Catherine Barringer

FAIRVIEW -- Mary Catherine Barringer Harbinson, 89, Flesher's Fairview Hlth Care Ctr, died Wed. May 23, 2001. Graveside service May 26, 11:30 AM Catawba Mem. Park. Vsnt: May 26, 10-11 AM Drum Funeral Home.

Abernethy, Ila Dellinger

DENVER -- Mrs. Ila Dellinger Abernethy, age 98 of Campground Road in Denver died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the home of her daughter. Her funeral service will be 3:00 PM Saturday at Denver Baptist Church. Her funeral service will be conducted by her grandsons, Dr. Ron Lynch and Jeff Harris. Burial will follow in Denver Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM Friday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Abernethy was born on August 9, 1902. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Emma Dellinger, husband, Horace D. Abernethy, a daughter, Frances Lynch, a son, Richard abernethy, a grandson, Michael Lynch, two brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors include: two daughters, Virginia and son-in-law, Bobby Harris of Pumpkin Center, NC, Marilyn and son-in-law, W.G. Reid of Maiden, NC; on son, H.N. and daughter-in-law, Mary Abernethy of Pumpkin Center, NC; five granddaughters, eight grandsons; thirty great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Denver Baptist Church Building fund, PO Box 383, Denver, NC 28037 or Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Blume, Gerald Stewart

Gerald Stewart Blume, 74, of Charlotte, NC, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at White Oak Manor. The funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001 at New Hope Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Allan Blume and Rev. Mike Campbell. Burial will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel.

Gerald Stewart Blume was born December 31, 1926 in Clover, SC, son of the late Charles Frederick Blume, Sr. and Ella Ruth Creech Blume. He served his country in the United States Marines in Okinawa during WWII. Gerald was a very active member of the New Hope Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and teaching Sunday school for over 40 years. He led the Boy Scout Troop #160 for over 25 years. Gerald was vice president of Blume Supply.

He is survived by his wife of fifty four years, Peggy; sons, Larry Blume and his wife, Donna of Matthews, Rev. Allan Blume and his wife, Pamela of Boone; daughter, Janice Payne and her husband, Roger of Baton Rouge, LA; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Mark, and Sherri Blume, Angela and Jessica Payne, and Kevin Blume; two sisters, Sybil Baker of Greenville, SC, and Dorothy Davis of Alabama; two brothers, Charles Blume, Jr. of Charlotte and Don S. Blume of Matthews. In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Kevin Blume.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to New Hope Baptist Church Youth Fund, 7841 Idlewild Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.

Josey, Dannie Caldwell Griggs

MAIDEN -- Dannie Caldwell Griggs Josey, 98, died Mary 22, 2001. Funeral is 4 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Anderson Baptist Church. Visitation is 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burke Mortuaries is in charge.

Roberts, James Roger

James Roger Roberts, 71, of Mint Hill, died on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at his home.

Funeral Services and his entombment will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Reverend Ben Creed, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Friday evening at Heritage Funeral Home, 4431 Old Monroe Rd.

Mr. Roberts was born in Goldsboro, NC to the late James and Erma Roberts. He retired in 1991 from Bell South and was a member of Masonic Lodge 742 in Mint Hill. Roger was a loving and devoted husband and father who will be deeply missed.

His survivors include his wife of nearly 36 years, Julia Roberts of Mint Hill; his sons, Terry Roberts and wife Michelle, and Douglas Roberts, both of Mint Hill; his brothers, Hugh Roberts and Guy Roberts, both of Goldsboro; and one sister, Mary Lou Basden, also of Goldsboro.

The family requests memorials may be made to either the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Ste 211, Charlotte, NC 28202 or to Presbyterian Home Care Hospice, 217 Travis Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204.

Arrangements for the Roberts family are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home.

Hager, Mattie Spencer

BESSEMER CITY -- Mattie Spencer Hager, 95, of 145 Sunnyside-Shadyrest Road, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at 111 Huffstetler Lake Road, Dallas, N.C.

Graveside Service is 11 a.m. today at Smyrna Cemetery, Bessemer City, with Rev. Claudia Harrellson and Rev. Don Williams officiating. Pallbearers will be Charles Hager, Dee Hager, Tommy Millwood, Matt Robinson, Tommy Robinson and Steve Shull. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Mullinax and Travis Shull. Visitation is 9:30-10:30 a.m. today prior to the service at Greene funeral service, Westside Chapel.

Born November 11, 1905 in Catawba County, N.C., Mrs. Hager was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Bessemer City. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. E.H. & Cathy Benfield Spencer; husband, Clyde A. Hager; brother, Robert Spencer; and sister, Etta S. Neal.

Surviving are her son & daughter-in-law, Robert "Bob" & Betty Hager, Bessemer City; daughters & sons-in-law, Jo H. & Douglas Hullender, Dallas, Betty H. & William "Bill" Shull, Bessemer City; brother, Johnny Spencer, Newton, NC; step-mother, Emma Spencer, Newton; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Concord United Methodist Church, 2404 Tryon Courthouse Road, Bessemer City, NC 28016.

Boyter, Lew

Mr. Lew Boyter, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Johnston Memorial Presbyterian Church with Reverend Pamela Eliason officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Friday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel.

Mr. Boyter was born in Spartanburg County, SC, son of the late Wiles M. and Mally Myers Boyter; was a member of Johnston Memorial Presbyterian Church; Men's Bible Class, with 30 years perfect attendance; was a graduate of Gaston County Schools; member of Phalanx Masonic Lodge #31 Steele Creek Chapter; Order of the Eastern Star; and was an avid Square Dancer with the Charlotte Shufflers for 20 years. Mr. Boyter retired as a supervisor with Southern Engineering after 36 years.

Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Suc C. Boyter; son, Jan Eugene Boyter of Charlotte; step son, Sonny Culbreth of Litchfield Park, Az; a sister, Lillian Boyter of Chester, SC; and a niece, Helen Gant of Chester, SC; and many other nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials my be made to Johnston Memorial Presbyterian Church, 729 East 36th Street, Charlotte, NC 28205.
