Campbell, Julia W.

CHESTER -- Mrs. Julia W. Campbell, 94, of 1508 AA Campbell Drive, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Chester County Nursing Center. Graveside service, 2pm Friday, Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Rev. David Sealy and Rev. Ronnie Green officiating. Mrs. Campbell was born in Anderson, SC on December 31, 1906, daughter of the late Thurston `Eugene` Webb and the late Eula Duckworth Webb. She attended schools in Anderson and was graduated from Limestone College. She taught school at Baton Rouge School and was retired from Springs Industries.

She is survived by step-sons, Boyce Campbell of Chester, SC, Jack Campbell of Bessemer City, NC, Harold Dean Campbell of Greenville, SC, and Ronnie Campbell of Chester, SC; step-daughters, Corrine Russell of Bessemer City, NC, Jewell Lathan and Barbara Strait, both of Chester, SC; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; nieces, Mr. and Mrs. Gene (Mary) Hamlin and Mr. and Mrs. Albert (Julia) Chamblee, all of Anderson, SC, and Frances Turner of Texas; and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Turner of Charleston, SC and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Turner of Gaffney, SC. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Colvin Wilkes, her second husband Allen Campbell, and a step-son, Hugh Campbell.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 10-12 noon at Barron Funeral Home.

Cox, David Elisha

MARION -- Mr. David Elisha Cox, 81, died May 29, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Friday at Westmoreland Chapel. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Varner, Susan Roberts

LAKE JUNALUSKA -- Susan Roberts Varner, 62, of 57 Whitfield Way, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Davidson County, daughter of the late Josh and Lottie Conner Roberts.

She was a retired office administer with Atlantic Physical Therapy. She was a former resident of Brevard and when she resided there, she served as secretary of the NC State Garden Club. She was the former chairwoman for the Transylvania County Bicentennial Committee and was a charter member of the Ladies of the Club and was also a member and participated in the `Calico Chorus.` She was also a member of Surfside United Methodist Church at Surfside Beach, SC where she sang in the choir and played hand bells. She enjoyed a lifetime of service to others and was an avid supporter of her children's activities. Most recently, she published a children's book entitled `A Special Friend` based on her childhood experiences.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, David Hawfield Varner; one daughter, Lesli Ann Gration and her husband, Peter, of Charlotte; one son, David Randall Varner and his wife, Linda, of Portland, OR; one brother, William (Bill) Roberts of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren.

A service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 1, 2001 at Harrison United Methodist Church in Pineville, NC. Reverend Charles Inabinet will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service. An additional memorial service will be held at her home church at 4:00 PM on Monday, June 4, 2001 at Surfside United Methodist Church at Surfside Beach, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the serving in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to the Surfside United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 14386, Surfside Beach, SC 29587.

Stegall, Janet Blaney

FORT MILL -- Mrs. Janet Blaney Stegall, age 78, formerly of Fort Mill, S.C., died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale N.C.

Mrs. Stegall was born April 24, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Lillian Blaney of Columbus.

Mrs. Stegall was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, a veteran of World War II, and a co-owner of Low Country Marble in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Friday, June 1, 2001 at Wolfe Funeral Home with Rev. John Fastenau officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill, S.C.

Mrs. Stegall is survived by her son, Mark Stegall of Danville, VA; her daughter, Lynn Stegall of Memphis, TN; her son, Gary Stegall of Conway, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Linson Stegall and Janet Stegall of Wilmington, N.C., and Jaclyn Ross Stegall of Danville, VA. She is also survived by two sisters, Marie Quick and Dorothy Strezze, both of Columbus, Ohio. Mrs. Stegall was predeceased by her husband, Linson Lee Stegall and her son, Ken Stegall of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday evening at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 3420 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.

Laws, Hester Eva

BESSEMER CITY -- Hester Eva Laws, 78, of 211 East Washington Avenue, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at home. A native of Gaston County, she was daughter of the late Will and Mattie Burnett Laws and attended First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sister, Emma Eaves of the home; nephews, J.C., Gene, Jerry, Robert, David and Howard Eaves, all of Bessemer City; nieces, Janes Shriner of Bessemer City and Margie Glover of Clover, SC; many great-nephews and great-nieces; special great-great nephews, Sean Douglas Shriner and Scott Chitwood; special great-great nieces, Kristen, Tayvia and Brittany Byers. She was preceded in death by brothers, Jess and Jim Laws, and a sister, Norm Laws.

Funeral services will be at 3pm Thursday at First Baptist Church with Revs. A.A. Bailey, Jerry Millwood, and Art Aumack officiating. Interment will be in Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 95, Bessemer City, NC 28016.

Huffman, Rosie Benfield

DREXEL -- Mrs. Rosie Benfield Huffman, 86, died May 29, 2001. Graveside Service is 3 p.m. Friday at Grandview Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the family.

Davis, Nancy `Irene` Hill

GASTONIA -- Mrs. Nancy `Irene` Hill Davis, 65, of 916 Monte Vista Lane, died May 30, 2001 at her home.

A memorial service will be 7 PM today at Greene funeral service Westside Chapel, with Reverend Brian Smith officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6-7 PM this evening at Greene funeral service Westside Chapel.

Mrs. Davis was a native of Haywood County, born on January 19, 1936. She was a daughter of the late Woodard Bryant and Nicey Mills Hill. Mrs. Davis was retired from Wix Corp, and was also a member of Harmony Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Hill, and a sister, Mary Ashe.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Trina Grooms, and Eddie and Marva Grooms, all of Bessemer City; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Keith McKinney of Gastonia; brothers, Leonard `Big Boy` Hill and Burton Hill, both of Dallas, NC; sisters, Oma Braswell of Dallas, NC, Betty Edwards and Dixie Lovelace, both of Gastonia, Mattie Sue Cheek, Frankie Kaye and Annie Mae Mintz, all of Waynesville, NC; grandchildren, Mitch, Kenzie and Kalon Grooms, Stacey Cummins, Samantha and Serra McKinney; and a great grandchild, Jason Cummins.

Memorials may be made to Lifeshare of the Carolinas, 101 W. T. Harris Blvd., Suite 5302, Charlotte, NC 28262.

Breeden, Richard Thomas "Tom"

MORGANTON -- Richard Thomas "Tom" Breeden, Jr., 69, of Hillside Lane, Morganton, NC died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Grace Hospital, Morganton following a brief illness.

Born in Burke County, NC on December 22, 1931, he was a son of the late Richard Thomas "Dick" Breeden, Sr. and Patsy McCarthy Breeden. Mr. Breeden was a 1954 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and was owner and operator of Breeden Poultry until his retirement in 1989. He was past member and president of the N.C. Poultry Processors Association and was a member of Linville Country Club and Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club. He served on the Board of Trustees of Brevard College, Gardner-Webb College, and Western Piedmont Community College. The Breeden Engineering Technology Center at Western Piedmont was named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Breeden. Mr. Breeden was a life member of the Educational Foundation at U.N.C.-Chapel Hill and he was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Pearson Breeden of the home; a son, Richard T. Breeden, III and his wife, Kathy of Morganton; daughters, Patrice Breeden Best of Morganton and Frances Joella Breeden Fulenwider and her husband, Mike of Morganton; a sister, Sara "Sis" Erwin and her husband, Bob of Morganton; grandchildren, James Marcellus Best, Thomas Wesley Best, Kathryn Elizabeth Breeden, Beatrice Caroline "Bea" Breeden, Frances Joella "Elle" Fulenwider, and Virginia Sara Patrice Fulenwider; and a cousin, Charles Graham of Glen Alpine.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 25, 2001 at Burke Memorial Park. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Robert E. Roach officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church gathering area.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 200 N. King St., Morganton, NC 28655 or to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 1029, Valdese, NC 28690.

Pelt, Jeffrey Scott Van

FORT MILL -- Mr. Jeffrey Scott Van Pelt, 36, of 422 Brook Bluff Lane, died Monday, May 21, 2001 in Kings Mountain, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm Thursday, May 24, at Glenrock Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Costner officiating.

A native of Galesburg, MI., Mr. Van Pelt was the son of Myron and Joanne Van Pelt. He was a truck driver for T.L.C. Trucking Co. of Ashboro, NC and a member of First Congressional Church of Galesburg, MI.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Lori Kelly of Plainwell, MI, and Melissa Ward of Tallahassee, Fl; and his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Schott of Tecatur, MI.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Sims, Willie Mae McClure

Mrs. Willie Mae McClure Sims, affectionately called `Mae`, was the daughter of the late Fred and Victoria Wallace McClure. She was born September 12, 1923 in Philadelphia, Penn. She departed this life Saturday, May 19, 2001. `Mae` was a delightful person to be around. Her joking wit was one of her best qualities.

She grew up in the Presbyterian church. She was a member of the Black Women's Caucus, Memorial Retirees Fellowship and Court of Calanthe. She attended Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. In early life, Mae was a beautician and won several hair styling awards. She later became a licensed practical nurse and was employed at Greystone Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey for 38 years until her retirement. She is preceded in death by one son, Charles W. Sims.

She is survived by one sister and two half sisters, Mrs. Jeanette M. Spicer (Herbert), Mrs. Virginia Ervin, and Mrs. Tillie Washington (James), all of Charlotte, NC; three aunts, Frances Kelly of Philadelphia, Pa., Carrie Welch (Cecil) of Washington, DC, and Pattie Mae McCLure of Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Family Mortuary is serving the family of Mrs. Sims.

Eubanks, James B. `Jim`

MOREHEAD CITY -- Mr. James B. `Jim` Eubanks, 83, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Morehead city, and also a member of the Charlotte Masonic Lodge since 1949. Mr. Eubanks was a charter member of the Raleigh Masonic Lodge and a member of the New Bern Masonic Lodge. He was an avid golfer, having made four `holes in one` at the Morehead City Country Club. He became a licensed pilot at the age of 65.

His funeral service will be held 6 pm Thursday, May 24, at Munden Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. J. Randall Sherron officiating. A graveside service will be held at 4 pm Friday, May 25, at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Union, NC.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Lee Thomas Eubanks of Morehead City; a daughter, Sabra E. Heagle of Troutman, NC; a son, Ben Eubanks of Melbourne, FL; and two grandchildren, Meg Karram of Boca Raton, FL and Ben Eubanks of Washington, DC. Also surviving is a great grandchild, Madison Karram, of Boca Raton, FL.

The family will receive friends from 5-6 pm Thursday at Munden Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 810 Bridge Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.

Beam, Randy Lynn

MOORESVILLE -- Mr. Randy Lynn Beam, 51, of 946 Oak Ridge Farm Road, died May 23, 2001 at his home.

Graveside service is 11 AM Friday, May 25, at Glenwood Memorial Park, with Reverend Phil DeBerry, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM tonight at Neill Funeral Home of Mooresville.

Mr. Beam was a native of Mecklenburg County, a son of Lena Brown Beam and the late Tillman Beam. He was the owner of The Conor Store.

Mr. Beam is survived by his mother, Lena Brown Beam of Mooresville; his wife, Linda Couch Beam of the home; three daughters, Kimberly Mitchell and her husband Steve, and Brandy Stiltner and her husband Kenny, all of Mooresville, and Hope Nee Smith and her husband Daniel, of Denver, NC; one brother, Thomas Beam of Mooresville; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Down Syndrome Association of Charlotte, Charlotte, NC, or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 9844-C Southern Pine Blvd., Charlotte, NC.

Neill Funeral Home of Mooresville is in charge of arrangements.

Hunter, Nancy Hoke

Mrs. Nancy Hoke Hunter, 65, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, died Saturday, May 19, 2001 in Charlotte while attending her 47th class reunion.

Mrs. Hunter was born January 7, 1936 in Morganton, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Hiem Hoke and Marguerite Cashion Hoke. She grew up in Charlotte and was a 1954 graduate of Harding High School. She had previously worked for GMAC in Charlotte and had lived in Kill Devil Hills, NC for the past 20 years. She had a love for gardening and nature, especially birds. Her greatest love was for her two dogs, Honey Bear and Teddy Bear. Mrs. Hunter was very active in the Cancer Support Group in Kill Devil Hills.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hunter will be held 7:00 PM Thursday, May 24, at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. The family will greet friends following the service at the chapel.

Mrs. Hunter is survived by a daughter, Judi Greene of Matthews; two grandchildren, Miki Maynard of Asheville and Michael Greene of Matthews; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Elaine Winterton and Mason Maynard. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her companion, Richard Biffle.

Memorials may be made in remembrance of Mrs. Nancy H. Hunter to Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, Inc. P.O. Box 3384, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948, or P.O. Box 1934, Manteo, NC 27954.
