SPENCER -- Mr. Jesse W. `Jay` Ellenburg, 82, died Thursday, May 24, 2001. Funeral is 11 AM Saturday at Summersett Memorial Chapel, Salisbury. Burial in Rowan Memorial park. Visitation is 7-9 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Presnell, Clint

ELIZABETHTON,TN -- Mr. Clint Presnell, 62 formerly of Banner Elk, Watauga County, died May 23, 2001 at home. Graveside service 2PM Friday at the Presnell Cemetery. Hampton in Boone is in charge.

Hagler, Joshua Michael

Joshua Michael Hagler, age 14, of Charlotte, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center after an eight month battle with cancer. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Joshua, will be conducted 3:00 PM Sunday, May 27, at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend N. Fred Jordan, Jr., the Reverend Laurie Hale and the Reverend Lynn Upchurch officiating.

Joshua was born November 9, 1986 in Charlotte, the son of Steve Hagler and Jill Burrows Hagler, and was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Matthew Hagler, and his twin sister, Diana Hagler. Also surviving are his grandparents, Marvin and Barbara Hagler, of Charlotte, and Peggy Burrows, also of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Clarence Burrows.

HAMLET -- Mrs. Dorothy C. Roberts, 79, died May 24, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Marks Funeral Home. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

LENOIR -- Coy "Marcus" Bishop, 38 of Hartland Rd, died May 23, 2001 at Lincoln Med. Ctr. Funeral Sunday, May 27, 2 PM Hartland Bapt. Ch. Vstn: Saturday, 6-8 PM Pendry's Funeral Home. Burial Hartland Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bell, Edward Perry

KERSHAW -- Mr. Edward Perry Bell, Sr., of 4811 Mud Dauber Road, passed away May 24, 2001 at his home.

He was born February 13, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, a son of the late Mr. William Hall Bell and Mrs. Mary Lee Perry Bell. An avid gardener, Mr. Bell was a retired brick mason, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster by the Rev. Needham Williamson and the Rev. Donald Brown. Burial will be in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Mills; three sons, Mr. Edward Bell, Jr., Mr. William A. Bell , both of Lansing, Michigan and Mr. Anthony A. Bell of Texas; brother, Mr. John "Buddy" Bell of Tupelo, Mississippi; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy B. Burns of Bartlett, Tennessee and Mrs. Marie B. Jarrell of Cedartown, Georgia; five grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church Playground Fund, PO Box 608, Lancaster, SC 29721-0608.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home, 4811 Mud Dauber Road, Kershaw.

Snyder, Daniel Henry

MOUNT HOLLY -- Mr. Daniel Henry Snyder, 71, of 224 Smith Road, died May 23, 2001 at Brian Center in Gastonia.

He was a native of Ft. Benning, Georgia, son of the late Samuel Edward and Mary Louise Henry Snyder, served in the U.S. Army for 18 years, and was a retired retail salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Jones Snyder; a son, Dana L. Snyder and wife Lana of Winder, GA; a step-daughter, Coleen Bush and husband James of Denver, NC; a step-son Richard Jenkins and wife Portia of Franklinton, NC; a sister, Dorothy Broom and husband Kenneth of Prosperity, SC; two brothers, Edward Snyder and wife Mary of Athens, GA, James Snyder and wife Jodie of Mountain Rest, SC; and a granddaughter, Jobie-Leigh Snyder.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Snyder will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly.

Shelton, Bertha Badgett

Mrs. Bertha Badgett Shelton, age 93, of Southminster, Charlotte, NC, widow of the late Mr. George Reid Shelton, died on Saturday, May 19, 2001 at Southminster Retirement Village in Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Shelton was born on July 28, 1907 in Surry County, daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Susan Key Badgett. Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker and member of the Franklin Heights United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles M. and Sandra Shelton and R. Edwin and Dottie Shelton all of Charlotte; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law; Mecie and Roy McHone, Tarboro, NC; Hazel and Edd Jessup of White Plains, NC and Marie and Jack Hutchins of Mt. Airy. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by a daughter, Mable Lee Shelton and by three sisters and five brothers. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 21, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Franklin Heights United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Rev. Carl Marn with burial to follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Church on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until time for the funeral service. Memorials be made to the Franklin Heights United Methodist CHurch, 614 South Franklin Road, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy is serving the Shelton family.

Ruffin, William Haywood

DURHAM -- William Haywood Ruffin, Jr., formerly of Durham, NC, died at his home in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, May 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Jane Marie de Laszlo; 2 children, Amanda J. Ruffin and W.H. Craige Ruffin; and his sister, Josephine Adamson. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday May 19th, in St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 229 Righters Mill Rd., Gladwyne, PA (610-649-6488). In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to your favorite conservation society.

Vallejo, Roberto Morales

Mr. Roberto Morales Vallejo, 57, of Charlotte, died Friday, May 11, 2001 at Mercy Hospital. Memorial services will be conducted on Friday, May 18, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church Ministry Center, Tom Wheeler and Scott Waters officiating. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service in the Ministry Center.

Mr. Vallejo was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He had worked for Display Fixture. A loving husband and father, he was disabled, and was a member of the FEAD DEAF Club.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Vallejo and his daughter, Regina, both of Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to Forest Hill Presbyterian Church Benevolence Fund, 7224 Park ROad, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Simpson, Ercel Lomax

ALBEMARLE -- Mrs. Ercel Lomax Simpson, 91, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001 at Poplin Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, Rev. Terry Burris officiating. Visitation will be from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Stanly Funeral Home.

Mrs. Simpson was born in Union County, NC, was a homemaker, and was a member of Poplin Grove Baptist Church for 60 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Simpson Westbrook; grandsons, David Lane Westbrook, Ryan Mark Westbrook, and John Robert Westbrook; and 4 great grandchildren, all of Conover, N.C.

Memorials may be made to Poplin Grove Baptist Church, 222 Poplin Grove Road, Albemarle, N.C. 28001, or Hospice of Stanly County, 960 North 1st Street, Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

McGarvey, John W.

John W. McGarvey, Sr., 80, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at the home of his son in Clarks Summit, Pa. Mr. McGarvey and his late wife, the former Kathleen Scanlon, had lived in Charlotte for many years. A US Army veteran of the Signal Corps, he served in the Pacific and in Korea and attained the rank of Sergeant.

He is survived by his children, David T. of New Ulm, New Mexico, Suzanne Titus of Moon Twp, PA, Vincent J. of Clarks Summit, PA, Elizabeth of Charlotte, NC; John W. Jr. of Dallas, TX, and Genevieve McGarvey-Tannenbaum of Davis, CA; his brother, Joseph McGarvey; 14 grandchildren; and 1 great grandson.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 12 noon in the Church of St. Charles Borromeo, Drexel Hill, PA. Friends may call at the church after 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Northeast Hospice Care, 38 North Main Street, Pittston, PA 18640 would be appreciated.

Abernathy, Walter Edward

LENOIR -- Mr. Walter Edward Abernathy, 79, died May 13, 2001. Funeral is 2pm Thursday at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church. Ebony Funeral Home is serving the family.

Yost, Kenneth E.

Kenneth E. Yost, 77, of Charlotte, died, May 14, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC. He was born August 8, 1923 in Morgan County, West Virginia, the son of George and Nellie Yost. He retired after 36 years in the Accounting Department with the former Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church of Charlotte, NC, American Legion Post 60, and a Mason with Deford Lodge Number 88. He also served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant JG.

He was a graduate of Berkley Springs High School class of 1940, received an engineering degree from the University of South Carolina and Masters Degree from West Virginia University.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Swaneda Kelly Yost of Charlotte, NC, twin daughters Linda K. Conroy and Karen L. Yost both of Mt. Dora, Fl, two sons, David K. Yost of Orlando, FL, and Daniel L. Yost of Charlotte, NC and two grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Paul V. Yost of Martinsburg, WV and a sister, Georgiana Butts of Berkeley Springs, WV. Two sisters preceded him in death, a twin sister at birth and Leona Y. Hettenhouser.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday May 16, 2001 in Berkeley Springs, WV at First United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made to Sharon United Methodist Church, 4411 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28211 or St. Peters Episcopal Church Boys Choir, 115 W. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Smith, Charlie B. `C.B.`

ANGOLA, IN -- Mr. Charlie B. `C.B.` Smith, Jr., age 71, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at Parkview Memorial Hospital. He was born September 28, 1929 at Albemarle Stanly County, NC to parents Madeline Jordan Smith and Charles B. Smith, Sr. Mr. Smith was a graduate of North Carolina State University and was employed as an electrical engineer at Magnavox and retired in 1991. He was also a veteran in the U.S. Army and was a member of Angola United Methodist Church. There will be a graveside service Friday, at 4:00 PM Fairview Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Friday, May 18, 1 to 3 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle.

Survivors are his wife, Carolyn Crook Smith, Angola, IN, daughters: Diane (Kevin) Shoppell, Angola, IN, Barbara (Steven) Alley, Indianapolis, IN, sisters: Maitland Harwood, Albemarle, NC, Jane Toomy, Concord, NC; and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Cynthia Anne Smith.

Moran, Patricia Annette

DARLINGTON -- Patricia Annette Moran, 57, died Monday, May 14, 2001 after an illness.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 18, 2001 at 2 PM in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Moran was born in Charlotte, NC on August 5, 1943. She was the daughter of Frank Hillman and the late Faye Hodge Hillman. Mrs. Moran was retired from McLeod Regional Medical Center after 20 years of service, where she was ward secretary for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Mrs. Moran loved her family immensely and was affectionately known as `Maw Maw`. She also enjoyed gardening.

Mrs. Moran was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel C. Moran, Jr., in 1997.

Survivors include her father, Frank Hillman of Salisbury, NC; two sons, Tim Moran of Timmonsville and Kevin (Debora) Moran of Pamplico; three daughters, Kathy (Meredith) Ransom of Lawrenceville, GA, Pam (Randy) Lawhon of Timmonsville, and Mindy (Greg) Edwards of Darlington; two sisters, Barbara (Joe) Hitesman of Monroe, NC and Sandra (Jim) Barley of Pineville, NC; seven grandchildren, Wesley Ransom, Krystynna Ransom, Katelyn Patrician Ransom, Brandon Edwards, Mallory Edwards, Mandy McGee and Randy Patrick Lawhon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 17, 2001 from 7-9 PM at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 e. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.
