KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Grace Lee Taylor, 83, formerly of Tanglewood Drive, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at Five Oaks Manor following several years of declining health.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Thursday, January 30, 2003, at Shadybrook Baptist Church. Dr. Randal D. Dockins, Sr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 PM Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home. The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home until taken to the church thirty minutes prior to the service.
Mrs. Taylor was born February 1, 1919 in Chesterfield County, SC. She was a daughter of the late Agustus Harris "Gus" Webster and Myrtle Sellers Webster. She had made her home in Kannapolis in 1941. She was a Charter Member of Shadybrook Baptist Church where she was active in all church affairs. She was retired from Cannon Mills. She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband of 64 years, Floyd S. Taylor; son, Jerry S. Taylor and his wife, Cookie, of Kannapolis; two granddaughters, Tracie D. Morris and her husband, Bill, and Tiffiny L. Sheets and her husband, Dale, all of Kannapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Caulder of New London, NC and Mrs. Gladys Knotts of Lilesville, NC; one brother, Dwight F. Webster of Concord, NC.
The family requests that memorials be made to the organization of the donor's choice in memory of Mrs. Taylor.

Reppard Allen James

BIRTH DATE: January 9, 1909
DEATH DATE: January 29, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Reppard Allen James, 94, of 3755 Enochville Road, and formerly of Harkey Avenue, Kannapolis, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2003, at Kannapolis Church of God. The Rev. Sam Crisp and Rev. Robert Hart will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mr. James was born January 9, 1909, in Madison County, GA. He was a son of the late Cleve William James and the late Evie Scarboro James. Mr. James retired several years ago from the Finishing Department of Cannon Mills. He was a member of Kannapolis Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie "Peggy" Jordan James, who died March 30, 1995; one sister, Bertie MacComson; and four brothers, Carrice, Otis, Odell and Felton James.
Survivors include one daughter, Hilda James Redmond and her husband, Hoyt, of China Grove; a son, Ferrell James and his wife, Betty, of Kannapolis; two sisters, Annie Lou Strickland of Cannon, GA and Irelle Thompson of Royston GA; a brother, Doyle James of Kannapolis; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Kannapolis Church of God, 2211 West A Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

J. C. Clontz

BIRTH DATE: May 1, 1925
DEATH DATE: January 30, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. John Calvin "J. C." Clontz, 77, of 1118 Grove Street, Kannapolis, died Thursday, January 30, 2003.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Shuman, Rev. Sarah Weaver and Mr. Doug Russell will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born May 1, 1925, in Union County, NC, he was a son of the late Baxter J. Clontz and the late Ollie Jane Helms Clontz. Mr. Clontz retired several years ago from Cannon Mills, Plant One, where he was employed in the No. 7 weave room. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a member of the Bullock Sunday School class for more that 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mittie Lou Utley Clontz, who died in 1976; a son, John Calvin Clontz, Jr., who died in 1945; two sisters, Kathleen Carpenter and Betty Thomas; and three brothers, Grady Clontz, Barker Clontz and Donald Clontz.
Survivors include his daughter, Debra Clontz "Debbie" Troutman and her husband, Phillip, of the home; four sisters, Edith Austin of Concord, Joyce Russell and Chattie Wilson of Kannapolis, Jerrie Hasty of Monroe; one brother, Bridger Clontz of Monroe; and three grandchildren, Justin Troutman, Jessica Troutman and Heather Troutman.

Alice Erwin Bonds

BIRTH DATE: April 16, 1910
DEATH DATE: February 1, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Alice Erwin Bonds, 92, a resident of Concord Place in Concord, and formerly of South Ridge Avenue, Kannapolis, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at University Hospital in Charlotte.
A memorial service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Born April 16, 1910, in Yazoo County, Mississippi, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Holmes Erwin and the late Eunice Martin Erwin. Mrs. Bonds retired in 1972 from the sample department of Cannon Mills Plant One. She had lived in this since 1920 and was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her husband, Benny Robert Bonds, preceded her in death on December 23, 1984.
Survivors include two daughters, Kaye B. Overcash and her husband, Harvey, of Harrisburg, and Margie B. Belk of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pauline Pouncey Leatherwood

BIRTH DATE: September 28, 1916
DEATH DATE: February 15, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Pauline Pouncey Leatherwood, 86, of 1004 Robinhood Lane, Kannapolis, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Howard Tyas and Rev. Amy Burton will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:00 PM Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a sister-in-law, Addie Ruth Pouncey, 1009 Robinhood Lane, Kannapolis.
Born September 28, 1916, In Highland Home, Alabama, Mrs. Leatherwood was a daughter of the late A. J. Pouncey and the late Lucy Stough Pouncey. She was a member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Leatherwood was past president of Poston Perkins VFW Post 8989 Auxiliary. She was also a former member of Brookside Baptist Church Senior Citizens Club, Senior Citizens Senior Club, Royal Oaks Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and involved with the Sunday School and Women's Circle. She was a volunteer with the W. G. (Bill) Hefner V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury and the Senior Citizens at the Kannapolis Y.M.C.A. Senior Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh R. Leatherwood, who died July 18, 1969; four brothers, Leo Pouncey, Pete Pouncey, Claude Pouncey and Charlie M. Pouncey; three sisters, Monteria Gregory, Lucille Jackson and Mary Clark.
Survivors include two sisters, Mattie Brewer of Manassas, VA and Lucy Cook of Bradleyton, AL; and one brother, Baxter Pouncey of Memphis, TN.
Memorials may be sent to Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, 900 Klondale Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Jacqueline Davis Potts

BIRTH DATE: March 10, 1935
DEATH DATE: February 27, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Jacqueline Davis Potts, 67, of 5305 Woodside Street, Kannapolis, NC, died Thursday, February 27, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center after several days of serious illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 PM Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. William H. Coughlin will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 PM Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at her home on Woodside Street in Kannapolis.
Mrs. Potts was born March 10, 1935 in Kannapolis, NC. She was a daughter of the late William Davis and Sadie Freeman Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Reid Potts, in July 1999.
Mrs. Potts is survived by two daughters, Janet Potts and Teresa Tucker, both of Kannapolis; son, Douglas Potts and his wife, Gwen, of Kannapolis; sister, Linda Treece of Concord; brother, Donald Davis of Kannapolis; mother-in-law, Myrtle Potts of Concord; three grandchildren, Travis Potts Tucker, Amanda Potts Tucker, Douglas Aaron Potts; one great grandchild, Raven Tucker Caldwell.

Pearl Graybeal Kelsey

BIRTH DATE: May 4, 1905
DEATH DATE: March 3, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Pearl Graybeal Kelsey, 97, of Best of Care Rest Home, Kannapolis, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 PM Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Sam Crisp will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The body will be in state at Lady's Funeral Home Thursday until the funeral hour.
Mrs. Kelsey was born May 4, 1905 in Abbington, VA. She was a daughter of the late Palmer Patterson Graybeal and Anner Yaunce Graybeal. She was retired from the Sheet Department of Cannon Mills.
Mrs. Kelsey, in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kelsey, and two children, Jim Kelsey and June Kelsey.
Mrs Kelsey is survived by a daughter, Kathleen K. Bennett, and her husband, Wally, of Kannapolis; one granddaughter, Patricia B. Beck of Charlotte.

Gladys Hughes Houston

BIRTH DATE: February 1, 1920
DEATH DATE: March 10, 2003

CHINA GROVE, NC - Mrs. Gladys Hughes Houston, 83, of 330 State Road, China Grove, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at First Wesleyan Church, 301 Bethpage Road, Kannapolis. The Rev. Steve Beam, Rev. Trent Patterson, Rev. Michael Covington and Rev. Leon Thompson will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born February 1, 1920, in Mt. Olive, NC, she was a daughter of the late John Henry Hughes and the late Georgia Ann Lane Hughes. Mrs. Houston was a homemaker. She was a faithful pastor's wife and worked in many activities in the Wesleyan Church. She was a member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Anne Houston.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Edward T. Houston; a daughter, Merle Houston Meckes and her husband, Roland P. Meckes, of China Grove; a brother, George Russell Hughes of Chester, VA; four grandchildren, Dee Efird of China Grove, Beth Carlton of Mooresville, Paul Meckes, Jr. of Kannapolis and Edward "Chip" Meckes of China Grove; four great-grandchildren, Brent Efird, Laura Anne Carlton, Katie Carlton and Wesley Meckes; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be sent to North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 West 12th Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Eileen Engels Blount

BIRTH DATE: May 9, 1954
DEATH DATE: March 15, 2003

CONCORD, NC - Mrs. Eileen Engels Blount, 48, of 9323 Rock Creek Court, Concord, NC, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at University Hospital in Charlotte.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Mark Nash will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will recieve friends from 6 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
Mrs. Blount was born May 9, 1954 in Saginaw, MI. She was a daughter of the late Herb Engels and Alice Mooney Engels. She was a homemaker and attended St. Thomas Catholic Church.
Mrs. Blount is survived by her husband, Hugh Howell Blount, III; three sons, Peter Engels, Nicky Blount, and Andrew Blount, all of the home; two brothers, James Engels and his wife, Deedee, of Concord, and Paul Engels and his wife, Shelia, of Charlotte; four nieces, Tammy Shue and Robin Engels Peeler, both of Concord, September Esaw and Donnie Esaw, both of Mannington, WV; one nephew, Jimmy Engels, Jr. of Kannapolis; two brothers-in-law, William Blount and Michael Blount, both of Concord; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Smith and her husband, Larry, of Concord, Teresa Esaw and her husband, Brian, of Mannington, WV.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 928, Concord, NC 28026-0928 in memory of Mrs. Blount.

Carl Van Athey

BIRTH DATE: April 11, 1924
DEATH DATE: March 15, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Carl Van Athey, 78, a resident of Avante at Concord and formerly of Lane Street in Kannapolis, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Avante at Concord, following a serious illness of three weeks.
A graveside service with interment to follow will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Kannapolis Cemetery. Pastor Sean Brigman will officiate.
Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born April 11, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Athey was a son of the late John Athey and the late Mary Yost Athey. He retired several years ago from the towel packaging department of Cannon Mills Plant One. He was a veteran of the US Navy. Mr. Athey was a member of Pleasant Avenue Freewill Baptist Church.
His wife, Lois Pulliam Athey, preceded him in death on September 28, 1998.
Survivors include two nieces, Barbara Chapman of Davidson and Dianne Brigman of Kannapolis.
