Edna Brown Solomon

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Edna Novella Brown "Skinny" Solomon, 92, a resident of Big Elm Nursing Center and formerly of Bertha Street in Kannapolis, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Big Elm Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ted Davis will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a grandson, Nolan Solomon, 503 West Rice Street, Landis.
Born August 30, 1910, in Montgomery County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Archie M. Brown and the late Lilly Jeanette Barnes Brown. Mrs. Solomon was a master seamstress during her career. She worked at local apparel establishments; including Virginia's and was the manager of The Gold Shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Currie "Lefty" Solomon; a son, Sidney Nolan Solomon; two sisters, Rose Brown and Ruth Brown Mauldin; and two brothers, Henry and Clifford Brown.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynne Moeller and her husband, Craig, of St. Louis, MO; a grandson, Sidney Nolan Solomon and his wife, Skylia Ann, of Landis; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Caroline and John Moeller of St. Louis, MO, Sarah Solomon of Landis; daughter-in-law, Susan L. Solomon of St. Louis, MO; and a niece who grew up in her aunt's care, Janice Solomon Osborne of Raleigh.

Rose Powers Darnell

DEATH DATE: June 10, 2003
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Rose Powers Darnell, 83, a resident of Avante at Concord and formerly of First Street, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Avante at Concord.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Leon Hawks will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:00 AM Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mrs. Darnell was born March 30, 1920 in Piney Creek, NC. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Powers. She was retired from Cannon Mills.
Mrs. Darnell, in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by her husband, William Cecil Darnell, in December 1989.
Mrs. Darnell is survived by a son, John Darnell of Kannapolis; and a daughter, Linda Darnell of Davie, FL.
Fred Winston Kidd

DEATH DATE: June 17, 2003
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Fred Kidd, 88, of 2227 Moose Road, Kannapolis, NC, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center after two months of declining health and one week of serious illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Rev. Tim Jernigan will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 PM Thursday at the church.
Mr. Kidd was born September 22, 1914 at Comer in Madison County, GA. He was a son of the late Thomas I. Kidd and Esther Moon Kidd. He retired from Cannon Mills where he was a supervisor in the #5 spinning room at Plant One in Kannapolis. He has been a resident of Kannapolis for 69 years. He was a longtime member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a Deacon and Trustee. He was also a member of the Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge Number 626 in Kannapolis.
Mr. Kidd is Survived by our mother, Dorothy Compton Kidd.
Mr. Kidd is survived by a daughter, Kaye Ollis, and her husband, Pete, of Salisbury; son, W. Gary Kidd, and his wife, Norma, of China Grove; sister, Odell Moon of Landis; two half-sisters, Emma Carter of Kannapolis and Dorothy Starnes of Supply, NC; two half-brothers, Weyman Kidd and Hoke Kidd, both of Kannapolis; four grandchildren, Todd Kidd and his wife, Terri, Dana Lindsay and her husband, Marshall, Stephanie Adams and her husband, Rick, and Michelle Laird; six great grandchildren, Heather Clark, Whitney Clark, Justin Kidd, Cami Adams, Joshua Adams, and Hannah Poteat.

Rena Carter Steele

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Rena Carter Steele, 95, of 902 West B Street, Kannapolis, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at North Kannapolis United Methodist Church. The Rev. Susan German will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born March 17, 1908, in Robeson County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Levi Charles Carter and the late Susie Bissell Carter. Mrs. Steele retired several years ago from the sewing room of Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis. She was an active member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl H. Steele; two sons, Bobby Steele and Sonny Steele; three sisters, Mary Smith, Mildred Weaver and Lina Shinn; and two brothers, David Carter and Major Carter.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Mills and her husband, Benny, of Kannapolis, Brenda Belk and her husband, Ralph, of Landis, Jeanie Deese and her husband, Robert, of Monroe; three sisters, Zula Morgan of Landis, Eunice Haigler of Marshville, Anna Dwiggins of Kannapolis; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth McManus Biles

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Ruth McManus Biles, 66, of 907 West C Street, Kannapolis, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Five Oaks Manor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Susan German, Rev. Sam Crisp and Rev. David Icenhour will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.

Born September 9, 1936, in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of the late Robert McManus and the late Sallie Church McManus. Mrs. Biles was a homemaker and had lived in this area most of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul McManus.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred Biles; four daughters, Terry Biles Jordan and her husband John, Linda Biles Dwiggins and her husband Tim, Carolyn Biles White and her husband Estus, Angela Biles Wagner and her husband Michael, all of Kannapolis; one brother, Guy McManus of Rockwell; and 10 grandchildren, Tonia Jordan, Matthew Jordan, Jeremy Dwiggins, Jason Dwiggins, Steven White, Jeremy White, Wesley White, Estus White IV, Heather Wagner and Allen Wagner.

Anna Gregory Compton

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Anna Gregory Compton, 87, of 2425 Winfield Street, Kannapolis, NC died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at St. Andrew's Living Center in Concord, NC after eighteen months of declining health and one month of serious illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tim Jernigan will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mrs. Compton was born December 18, 1915 in Statesville, NC. She was a daughter of the late Silas and Dessie Pratt Gregory. She was retired from the washcloth department of Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis. She was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Compton, and her son, Robert Lee "Bobby" Compton, Jr.
Mrs. Compton is survived by two daughters, Mary C. Medlin of Kannapolis and Margaret C. Seagraves of Colorado Springs, CO; a sister, Margaret Moore of Camillus, NY; five grandchildren, Hal Seagraves, Jr., Jodie Dickey, Shannon Miskol, Tonya Hite and Tommy Johnston, Jr.; and five great grandchildren.
Virginia Simmons Safrit

CONCORD, NC - Mrs. Virgina Simmons Ford Safrit, 64, of 737 Irish Potato Road, Concord, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, at North Kannapolis Baptist Church. The Rev. David Myers will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.

Born August 29, 1938, in Madison County, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Clifford L. Simmons and the late Eunie Dodd Simmons.
In addition to he parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Ford.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Safrit; four daughters, Connie Walker, Ann Talley and Karrie Safrit, all of Concord and Amy Pearson of Kannapolis; one son, Dale Safrit of Concord; four sisters, Evie Griffin and Dot Waller of Salisbury, Karen Shelton of Kannapolis, Betty Robinson of Concord; two brothers, Grover Tolbert of Locust and Lonnie Simmons of Shelby; and 10 grandchildren.
Clifford Edgar Honeycutt

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Clifford Edgar Honeycutt, 71, of 2850 Camp Julia Road, Kannapolis, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center, following a serious illness of two weeks.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Evelyn Browning will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of his sister, Mary Catherine Patterson, 2887 Centergrove Road, Kannapolis.
Born November 30, 1931, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Rufus Edgar Honeycutt and the late Jennie Marianne Sides Honeycutt. Mr. Honeycutt was a retired automobile mechanic. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold V. Honeycutt, and a nephew, Charles Mark Patterson.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Catherine Patterson of Kannapolis; a niece, Cathy Smith and her daughter, Dara, of China Grove; two nephews, John Rogers of Kannapolis, Fred Rogers and his wife Carolyn, and their sons, George and Charlie Rogers of Chicago, IL.

David Edward Haslach

CONCORD, NC - Mr. David Edward Haslach, 54, of 3044 Parade Lane, Concord, died Thursday, August 14, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2003, at Concord Christian Church. The Rev. Mike Wood will officiate. Interment will follow in the VA National Cemetery in Salisbury.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born April 5, 1949, in Queens, NY, he was a son of the late John Joseph Haslach and the late Mary Helen Horan Haslach. Mr. Haslach was a correctional officer with the Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury. He was a Vietnam veteran of the US Navy. He was a member of Concord Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Marie Jackson Haslach; two daughters, Kathryn Denise Haslach of New Bern and Elizabeth Eileen Haslach of Concord; four sons, David Stephen Haslach and his wife, Sherry Lynn, of Watertown, NY, James Joseph Kuffner of Kannapolis, Thomas Christopher Kuffner of New Bern and Adam Daniel Kuffner of Concord; and two grandchildren, Amanda Ashcraft and Hunter Taylor-Ann Haslach of Watertown, NY.

Luther Lee Spry

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Luther Lee Spry, 82, of 508 Helen Street, Kannapolis, died Sunday, August 17, 2003, at his home.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Don Shuman, Kevin Honbarger and Sarah Weaver will officiate.

Born June 29, 1921, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Samuel Lock Spry and the late Mary Elizabeth Kluttz Spry. Mr. Spry served 29 years in the US Air Force. He later worked for Fruhauff in Charlotte, NC until his retirement. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Cabarrus Shrine Club.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Icenhour Spry; a daughter, Carol Ann Allison and her husband, Rick Farrell, of Raleigh; a son, David Warren Spry and his wife, Brenda, of Charlotte; a sister, Mary Little of Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Matthew Allison, Bradley Allison and his wife, Angela; and two great-grandchildren, Josh Allison and Bethany Allison.
