Raleigh, NC - Mrs. Brennie Workman Caton, 99, of Raleigh and formerly of Kannapolis, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Raleigh Rehab and Healthcare.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. Dr. Howard Tyas, pastor of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
Born February 1, 1905, in Stockton County, SC, she was a daughter of the late John James Workman and Martha Nancy Martin Workman. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Kannapolis.
Mrs. Caton was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Caton, who died May 16, 1980.
Survivors include a son, Stanley L. Caton, Sr. of Raleigh; a sister, Mary J. Simpson of Margate, Florida; a brother, Astor Workman of Charlotte; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Syble Presson

BIRTH DATE: December 17, 1915
DEATH DATE: May 18, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mary Syble Presson, 88, a resident of the Brian Center in Concord, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, following a number of years of declining health.
A graveside service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Joseph A. Miller will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born December 17, 1915, in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Vernon A. Presson and May Anne Laney Presson.
Survivors include a sister, Rachel Hawsley Buckwell of Concord; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special sister-in-law, Margie Spry of Kannapolis.
Memorials may be sent to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, 4500 Rimer Road, Concord, NC 28025.

Herbert J. Baker

BIRTH DATE: January 3, 1921
DEATH DATE: May 19, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Herbert J. Baker, 83, of 901 Nance Street, Kannapolis, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Jernigan and Mr. Baker's son, Jerry H. Baker, will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born January 3, 1921, in West Jefferson, NC, he was a son of the late Linny McKinley Baker and Bertha Phillips Baker. Mr. Baker was a US Army veteran of World War II. He had lived in this area most of his life and retired 22 years ago from the Internal Revenue Service in Charlotte. He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church where he was a deacon and previously served as church treasurer.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Doylen Walsh Baker; a son, Jerry H. Baker and his wife, Cassandra, of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister, Lois Wetter of Kannapolis; a brother, Dr. Linny M. Baker of Concord; two grandchildren, Josephine Davidson Baker of Washington, DC and Martin Marshall Baker and his wife, Jennifer, of Atlanta, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Cabarrus County, PO Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026 or Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 526 Wright Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

Pauline Price Deal

BIRTH DATE: September 17, 1914
DEATH DATE: May 25, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Pauline Price Deal, 89, of 1208 East 1st Street, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Brunswick Community Hospital in Supply, NC.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Sandy Yow will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born September 17, 1914 in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Jefferson Price and Neva Payne Price. Mrs. Price retired from the sewing room of Cannon Mills with over 45 years of employment. She was an avid race fan for over 40 years and worked for NASCAR as a timer-scorer. She was a charter member of the Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Deal, in September 1979; and a daughter, Jean McWhorter.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Miller of Kannapolis and Betty Rance of Salem, Ohio; three sisters, Martha Fox, Louise Herman and Elizabeth Shoemaker, all of Taylorsville; four brothers, Jim Price of Newton, Hayden Price of Banner Elk, Sonny Price and Bob Price of Taylorsville; five grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Addie Honbarier Lyerly

BIRTH DATE: April 12, 1912
DEATH DATE: May 27, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Addie Honbarier Lyerly, 92, of 206 Overcash Avenue, Kannapolis, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Best of Care Rest Home.
A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Bethpage United Methodist Church. The Rev. Randy Foster and the Rev. Fred Hill will officiate.
The family will greet friends at the church following the service. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born April 12, 1912, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Love Honbarier and Ida Coppley Honbarier. She had lived in this area most of her life and retired several years ago from the sheet department of Cannon Mills where she was employed for 52 years. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and White Shrine.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerry J. Lyerly, who died May 20, 1972.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice L. Keever of Kannapolis; a sister, Clara Taylor of Denton; four grandchildren, Harry E. Greene, Jr., with whom she made her home, Chris Greene of Kannapolis, Linda Childress of Charlotte and Myra Kautsky of Naples, FL; six great-grandchildren, Melissa Kaminski of Satellite Beach, FL, Blake Greene of Tallahassee, FL, Devon Greene of Athens, GA, Scott Childress and Joel Childress of Charlotte and Heather Childress of Hickory; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Bethpage United Methodist Church, 109 Fellowship Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Dewey Evans Doolittle, Jr.

BIRTH DATE: February 23, 1945
DEATH DATE: June 3, 2004

SALISBURY, NC - Mr. Dewey Evans Doolittle, Jr., 59, of 125 Mountain View Road, Lot. 4, Salisbury, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis. Interment will follow at the VA National Cemetery on Statesville Boulevard in Salisbury.
The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Born February 23, 1945, in Aiken County, SC, he was a son of the late Dewey Evans Doolittle, Sr. and Geneva Shelhorn Doolittle. He retired from the McGuire Plant of Duke Power Company. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Michelle Doolittle.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Head Doolittle; four sons, Rangie Bumgarner and his wife, Debbie, of Albemarle, Johnny Evans Doolittle of Salisbury, Paul Steven Doolittle of China Grove and Dewey Evans Doolittle III of Salisbury; three sisters, Dianne Bass and Joann Talbert, both of Kannapolis and Tammy Myers of Salisbury; one brother, James Doolittle of China Grove; and 11 grandchildren.

Boyce Dewitt Petty, Sr.

BIRTH DATE: March 12, 1926
DEATH DATE: June 12, 2004

LANDIS, NC - Mr. Boyce Dewitt Petty Sr., 78, of 503 Turner Street, Landis, died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at his home following a number of years of declining health.
The funeral will be 12 noon Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the V.A. National Cemetery in Salisbury at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Charles Carter will officiate. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Rowan Veterans Council.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Turner Street.
Mr. Petty was born March 12, 1926, in Gastonia. He was a son of the late Charles Jefferson Petty Sr. and Gertrude Tisdale Petty. Mr. Petty was a partner with Progressive Builders in Kannapolis and served in the U.S Navy during World War II.
Mr. Petty is survived by his wife, Clara Carter Petty; three daughters, Dianne P. Compton and her husband David, Tana Hyatt and her husband, Derrick, and Robyn Brown and her husband, Mike, all of Kannapolis; two sons, Buster Petty and his wife, Paula, and Steve Petty, all of Kannapolis; a sister, Jean Lear of Gastonia; a brother, Charles J. "Jay" Petty Jr. of Moss Point, Miss.; 10 grandchildren, David Compton Jr., Amy C. Nicodemus, Shohn Petty, Heath Petty, Brandi Brown, Bubba Brown, John Hyatt, Andrew Petty, Chandi Gurley and Ryan Petty; and four great-grandchildren.

Kathryn Rogers Taylor

BIRTH DATE: October 2, 1914
DEATH DATE: June 14, 2004

Fitzgerald, Georgia - Mrs. Kathryn Rogers Taylor, 89, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, and formerly of Kannapolis, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Terry Hammill will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis.
Mrs. Taylor was born October 2, 1914, in Cabarrus County. She was a daughter of the late Furney U. Rogers and Emma Freeze Rogers. She was a homemaker and former nurse's aide. She attended Catawba College in Salisbury for two years and was a member of Royal Oaks United Methodist Church in Kannapolis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Raymond Taylor, who died November 13, 1969; and three sisters.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by three daughters, Sue Nix and her husband, John, of Fitzgerald, GA, Kathy Warlick and her husband, Phil, of Gainesville, GA, Emma Green and her husband, Steve, of Holly Springs, NC; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Willie Mae McGinnis

BIRTH DATE: May 27, 1908
DEATH DATE: June 23, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Willie Mae Grooms McGinnis, 96, of 1301 Birch Street, Kannapolis, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Leon Hawks will officiate. Interment will be at the VA National Cemetery in Salisbury.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mrs. McGinnis was born May 27, 1908, in Statesboro, GA. She was a daughter of the late Winfield Grooms and Minnie Mincey Grooms. She was a homemaker and representative for Avon Cosmetics for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. McGinnis and a daughter, Bobbie McGinnis Haltom.
Mrs. McGinnis is survived by a daughter, Melody McGinnis and spouse, William Whitaker, of Kannapolis; and a granddaughter, Cherie Ward of Kannapolis.

Eula Carter Benfield

BIRTH DATE: August 7, 1910
DEATH DATE: July 21, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Eula Carter Benfield, 93, 2122 Bertha St., Kannapolis, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after two months of declining health.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove. The Rev. Eric Burris and the Rev. Gary Posey will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Bertha Street.
Born Aug. 7, 1910, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Monroe Carter and Lilly Coffey Carter. Mrs. Benfield retired from the spinning room of Cannon Mills Plant 1 in 1971.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Sellers; a stepdaughter, Janet Foster; three brothers, Perry Carter, Jess Carter and Arthur Carter; and two sisters, Lizzie Correll and Sarah Myers.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Benfield Coxey, with whom she made her home; two stepsons, Fred Benfield, Texas, and Jimmy Benfield, Asheville; three stepdaughters, Joyce Measimer, Concord, Donnell Joyner, Salisbury, and Irene Crowe, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Rosa Foster of Landis; 22 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
