WILL MAYNARD HEISER
Will Maynard Heiser, 86, died Thursday, (10-9-2003).
He is survived by his wife Audrey O. Heiser; one daughter, Marcia L. Heiser of Westminster, Colorado; two sons, David M. Heiser of Fuquay-Varina and Charles D. Heiser of Sanford; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He has been active in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers for many years. He served as Chair of the Chatham County Board of Elections for 11 years, and in 1998 was presented an award of Outstanding Republican of Eastern North Carolina by Senator Jesse Helms.
A celebration of life will be held at Amity United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill on Sunday (10-19-2003) at 3:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Amity United Methodist Church or to Croasdaile Retirement Village (Chapel Fund) in Durham.
OZA SMITH UPCHURCH
Mrs. Oza Smith Upchurch, 92, of 360 Carthage St., Bennett died Tuesday (10-14-2003).
Graveside Funeral Services will be 4 p.m. Thursday (10-16-2003) at Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville, NC with Rev. Tim Strider officiating.
Mrs. Upchurch was a Franklin County native and member of Bennett Baptist Church.
Survivors are daughter, Mrs. Mac Currin of Bennett; son, Robert Lee Jennings of Louisburg; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
WINFRED EARL BUCKNER
Mr. Winfred Earl Buckner, 83, of 1631 Jessie Bridges Road, Siler City died Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held 2 pm Thursday, October 16, at Rocky River Baptist Church in Siler City with Rev. Greg W. Burriss and Rev. Dr. Tommy E. Steele, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Buckner was a native of Chatham County, an Army/Air Force veteran of World War II and was former owner-operator of a service station. He was retired from Bradshaw Supply Company in Siler City.
Survivors are brother, Lynn Buckner of Siler City; sisters Myra B. Brady, Doris Buckner and Peggy B. Kirby all of Siler City; special nephew and two special nieces, Ray Woodburn, Diane Smith and Terry Brooks with whom he made his home with in earlier years; aunt, Veola Griffin of Falls Church, VA; and other special nieces and nephews

Rev. Max Gardner Reece sr.
Rev. Max Gardner Reece, Sr., 72, of 145 Old Mill Rd. died October 11, 2003 at River Landing at Sandy Ridge.
Rev. Reece was born March 12th, 1931 in Boonville, NC, a son to Joe Henry and DeEtte Johnson Reece. He was a graduate of Wingate College and was a retired Southern Baptist Minister of 38 years. During that tenure he pastored Deep Creek Baptist Church in Wadesboro, Oak View Baptist in High Point, Oakley Baptist Church in Siler City, Hillcrest Baptist Church in Greensboro and Allen Jay Baptist Church in High Point. He was currently a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. On July 1st, 1950 he married the former Virginia Weaver who survives of the residence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Reece Melton, and a brother; Roderick Reece.
Also surviving are three children; Deborah Lynn Reece Robbins and husband Councill of High Point, Max Gardner Reece, Jr. and wife Susan of New London and Frederick Joel Reece of Thomasville, two sisters; Jannes Reece Bradley of Elkin and Bertha Reece Lewis of Ronda, two brothers; Fred Reece of Trinity and Tommy Reece of Boonville, three grandchildren; Max Gardner Reece III, Willis Councill Robbins III and Madison Elizabeth Robbins, and numerous nieces & nephews.
funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday at Oak View Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Mark Corts officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 pm, Monday at the Cumby Family funeral service in High Point and other times at the residence.

JACK EMERSON POWERS
Mr. Jack Emerson Powers, 97, of 295 Phillips Rd., Bennett died Monday (10-13-2003) at SunBridge Care in Siler City.
Funeral services will be held Thursday (10-16-2003) at 11:00 a.m. from the Fall Creek Baptist Church where he was a member with Rev. Bob Gelsthorpe and Rev. Ron Chaney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Powers was a Chatham County native who lived in Durham for many years. He retired from Duke Power as a Linesman in 1968. He was a member of the Men's Sunday School class.
Survivors are daughters, Mrs. Ruth Phipps of Bennett, Mrs. Kay Simpson of Carthage, Mrs. Joyce Bissette of Durham; son, Joe Powers of Bennett; thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
BLEACH IVERSON JOHNSON
Bleach Iverson Johnson, 86, died at Sun Bridge Care and Rehabilitation of Siler City.
He was a native of Alamance County and worked with the sanitation department for many years.
Funeral services were held 4 p.m. Tuesday (10-14-2003) in St. Matthews AMEZ Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, William Bleach Nixon of Richmond, VA, Stanley William Johnson of South Hill, VA; one daughter, Ellen Joyce of Graham; one sister, Lester D. Woods of Graham; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
DAVID LEE GOODMAN
Mr. David Lee Goodman, 80, of Bynum Road, died Monday (9-29-2003) at his residence.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday (10-3-2003) at Solid Rock Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry L. Sanders officiating. Interment followed in the Bynum Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Goodman was retired from the UNC, where he had worked as a painter. He was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma; one son, Jimmy Goodman of Pittsboro; three daughters, Helen Waldeck and Peggy Gilmore, both of Pittsboro, and Carolyn Carson of Creedmoor; two brothers, Frank and Hugh Goodman, both of Pittsboro; four sisters, Eva Riddle and Faye Hart, both of Mebane, Irma Ellis of Pittsboro, and Mary Alice Sanders of Chapel Hill; 10 Grandchildren; 4 Great-Grandchildren.
BERTA BRAFFORD HILL
Mrs. Berta Brafford Hill, 64, of 72 Chatham Business Park, Pittsboro died Friday (10-3-2003) at The Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday (10-5-2003) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed at Providence United Methodist Cemetery in Siler City.
Mrs. Hill was a native of Chatham County, a member of Providence United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. She was retired from Kayser-Roth, Goldston.
Survivors are daughter, Sherri H. Bradley; and 2 grandchildren.
MOZELLE JORDAN FREEMAN
Mrs. Mozelle Jordan Freeman died Wednesday (10-1-2003) at Sun Bridge Rehabilitation and Care Center.
A memorial service was held 2:30 p.m. Sunday (10-5-2003) at Liberty Grove United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by her husband, J.D. Freeman; father, Colon Jordan of Liberty; sisters, Peggy Jordan Hurley of Eden and Ruth Jordan Carr of West Grove, PA.

JOHN COY CHEEK
Mr. John Coy Cheek, 76, of 800 Vander Oldham Road, Bear Creek died Saturday (10-4-2003) at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday (10-7-2003) at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Bear Creek with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in church cemetery.
Mr. Cheek was a native of Chatham County and was retired from Townsends, Inc. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors are wife, Opal Henriott Cheek of Bear Creek; sons, Charles L. Cheek of Bear Creek, John W. Cheek of Apex; daughter, Patricia C. Austin of Bear Creek; step-sons, Frank Patrum of Snow Camp, Mike Patrum; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson and 3 step-grandchildren

HENRY OWEN JOYCE
Henry Owen Joyce, 94 of 2050 Lambert Chapel Road, Siler City died Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday September 25, 2003 at Brush Creek Baptist Church, Siler City with Rev. Patrick Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery.
Mr. Joyce was a native of Rockingham County, a retired farmer and the oldest member of Brush Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday school class. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velna Bray Joyce.
He is survived by his son Robert Edward Joyce and wife, Rachel of Burlington; sister Brooksie Higgins of Asheboro; brothers, Woodrow Joyce of Greensboro, Martin Joyce and wife, Juanita of Aikens, SC; sister-in-laws, Grace Joyce and Golda Joyce both of Ramseur.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City at other times at the family home, 2050 Lambert Chapel Road, Siler City.

LARUE COLE TRIPP
Mrs. LaRue Cole Tripp, 92, formerly of 2624 Mt. Gilead Church Rd., Pittsboro, died Monday morning, September 29, 2003 at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Siler City.
Born February 10, 1911 in Chatham County, she was the daughter of Kemp Battle Cole and Sally Ann Williams Cole. Mrs. Tripp was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Ivey Moore Cole, and her husband Roy Bunyan Tripp. She was retired from Chatham Mills, where she worked as a label inspector. During wartime, LaRue worked in the munitions plant in Carrboro. As long as her health permitted, Mrs. Tripp was an active member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Pittsboro, where she was in the WMU and the Adult 1 Sunday school class.
Survivors are two sons and daughters in law, Kemp Bunyan "KB" and Minnie Tripp of Chapel Hill, and James Auburn and Jean Tripp of Pittsboro; a daughter and son in law, Ann Tripp Bouldin and Rev. Robert Bouldin of Bear Creek; one step brother, James R. Durham and wife Ruth of Chapel Hill; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Tripp was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 1 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Singletary and Rev. Jim Wall. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

ROSETTA THOMAS HANKS
Mrs. Rosetta Thomas Hanks, 84, died Wednesday (10-1-2003) at the Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday ( 10-5-2003) at Mt. View A.M.E. Zion Church, Moncure with Rev. Maxine Mangum officiating. Interment followed at Seymour Cemetery.
Mrs. Hanks was a member of Mt. View A.M.E. Zion Church.
Surviving are one brother, George Wesley Thomas of Moncure; one sister, Elsie Thomas Marrow of Oxford ; nieces and nephews.
