JACKIE WHITE WHITWORTH

Ms. Jackie Carol White Whitworth, 61 of 380 West 11th Street, Apt. 1H, Siler City died Tuesday (10-7-2003) at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (10-9-2003) at Community Baptist Church, Siler City with Rev. Brandon Blevins officiating. Burial following in church cemetery.

Ms.Whitworth was a native of Alamance County, a member of Community Baptist Church and was retired from Isley's Hosiery Mill in Graham.

Survivors are sons, Denny Whitworth of Siler City, Danny Whitworth of Newton; daughter, Patty W. Abercrombie of Bear Creek; brothers, Jerry White of Graham, Ted White of Burlington and 1 granddaughter.

Visitation will be Wednesday (10-8-2003) at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

BERNARD F. AKERS

Bernard F. Akers, 85 of Springville, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 7th at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Virginia.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Thursday (10-9-2003) at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Don Elswick and Chaplain Phil Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens. Graveside services will be conducted by the Bluefield, VA VFW Memorial Post 9696 and the Pocahontas American Legion #14. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and Honorary pallbearers will be , Drema D. Byrd, Pamela A. Himmelmann and Jackie Akers.

Mr. Akers was a retired miner after over 30 years of service, having worked for Bishop Coal Co. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was of the Church of God faith.

Survivors are sons, Harold Jack Akers of Springville, VA, Charles B. Akers of Siler City; daughters, Margaret A. Smell of Tucson, AZ, Debbie A. Cole of Blythwood, SC, Virginia A. Angles of Blythwood, SC, Ethel M. Ward of Bluefield, VA; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

MR. MARVIN THOMAS DAVIS

Mr. Marvin Thomas Davis, 72, of US 15-501 North, Pittsboro, died Tuesday night, September 23, 2003 at UNC Hospital following a period of declining health. Born September 12, 1931 in Edgecombe County, NC, he was the son of George and Eliza Ellis Davis. He was predeceased by his parents, and also by a brother, Billy Davis. Marvin was a busy, working man with a good sense of humor. He felt it was most important to provide for his family and set that example at an early age by stopping school in 8th grade to help provide for his brothers and sisters. He was proud of the fact that he later graduated from high school after attaining his GED. Marvin served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After being Honorably Discharged from the military, he became active in the community. He worked with the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years, serving the Carrboro area, and lastly serving as Postmaster at Broadway. Later Marvin served as a bailiff for the Chatham Co. Sheriff's Dept. He was the owner of Davis Accounting for over 30 years. He was also very involved with the Bynum Ruritan Club and was a Charter member of the Carrboro Rescue Squad. Marvin was the first person in Chatham Co. to obtain a concealed weapon carry permit. He was a former member of Carrboro Baptist Church, and was now an active member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, where he sang with the Church Father's group.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Owen Davis, of the home; sons, Frank Davis of Pittsboro, and Richard Lockamy Davis of Hickory; daughters, Joyce Holloman and her husband Gerald of Temple, TX, Susan Davis Klein and her husband Rick of Micro, Connie Elaine Belcher and her husband Don of Tampa, FL; brothers, Gene Davis of Morganton, Charlie Davis of Carrboro, Wren Davis of Swepsonville; sisters, Lois D. Hewett of Chapel Hill, Sara Davis Wright of Chapel Hill, Mary Davis of Bear Creek, Barbara Davis of Chapel Hill; 4 Grandchildren; 4 Great-Grandchildren.

The funeral service to celebrate the life of Marvin Thomas Davis was conducted by Rev. John Singletary and Brother-In-Christ Robert Elmore at 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 26, 2003 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Chatham County Sheriff's Department; Honorary pallbearers were members of the Ruritan Club.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Davis' name to the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 1785 Mt. Gilead Church Road, Pittsboro. NC 27312.

NATHAN EARL BROOKS

Nathan Earl Brooks, 81, of 38 Ashland Drive, Goldston died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at Sun Bridge Care Facilities in Siler City.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 28 at Goldston Baptist Church, Goldston with Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial followed at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church in Bear Creek with military rites.

Mr. Brooks was a native of Chatham County and was a retired shoe shop repairman and from Kayser-Roth, He was a member of Goldston Baptist Church where he was church organist for 37 years. He was a member of the Men's Sunday school class and was a Navy veteran of WW II. Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Laurie Wicker Brooks.

He is survived by his nephews, Dennis P. Brooks of Climax, Roe Brooks of Bear Creek, Dean Brooks of Goldston; nieces, Linda B. Greeson of Whitsett, Janice B. Moser of Burlington, Jean B. Stinson of Bear Creek and Exilee B. Dowd of Pittsboro.

ANNIE PEARL SHARPE

Annie Pearl Sharpe of 202 Raymond Sharpe Road, Bear Creek died Saturday (10-25-2003) at Sun Bridge Care Facilities in Siler City.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday (10-28-2003) at Antioch Christian Church in Bear Creek with Rev. Warren Brown and Rev. Clark Davis officiating. Burial followed in church cemetery.

Miss Sharpe was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker . She was of the Christian Faith.

Surviving are brothers, Reno Sharpe and Raymond Sharpe both of Bear Creek; sister, Nettie Sharpe of Bear Creek and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Antioch Christian Church Building Fund, 246 Antioch Christian Church Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

ETNA MOZELLE PICKETT

Etna Mozelle Pickett, 88, of 601 N. Third Ave., Siler City died Thursday, October 23, 2003 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 26 at First Wesleyan Church in Siler City with Rev. Kevin Stumbo officiating. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City.

Miss Pickett was a native of Chatham County, a member of First Wesleyan Church, Secretary of the Ladies Bible Class and was retired from Hadley-Peoples Mfg. Company.

Survivors are brother, Albert Pickett of Siler City; sister, Faye P. Williams of Siler City; great-nieces, Sherri Carter and husband, Neal of Staley, and Annette Bailey and husband, David of Siler City, and great-great-niece, Brynn Carter of Staley.

Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 608 N. 3rd Ave., Siler City, NC 27344.

BUNN CURTIS BREWER

Bunn Curtis Brewer, 75, of 3283 Bennett-Siler City Rd, Bennett died Wednesday (10-22-2003) at his home.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday (10-25-2003) at Bennett Baptist Church where he was a member with Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Brewer was a Chatham County native, was a retired security guard, and a member of the Roland Linnens Sunday School Class at his church.

Survivors are wife, Nellie Welch Brewer of the home; son, Bill Brewer of Bennett; daughters, Tris Humble of Franklinville, Cheryl Brewer and Bunnie Brewer both of Bennett; sisters, Audrey Craven of Coleridge, Fonnie Watson of Kernersville; brother, Leonard Brewer of Greensboro; and two grandsons.

JAMES ROBERT RODGERS

Mr. James Robert Rodgers, 56, died Tuesday (9-30-2003) in Maryland.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday (10-11-2003) at Evans Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Ridie Headen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Rodgers graduated from Chatham High and was a army veteran.

Surviving are his children, Bonnie and Tameika Rodgers of Greensboro, and Cashua Rodgers of Durham; his father and mother, Charlie and Euphenia Rodgers; four brothers, Charlie, Jr. of Greensboro, Howard of Virginia, Leroy and Bobby of the home; two sisters, Doris Belton of Pleasant Garden, and Delois Alston of Pittsboro.

EDNA K. DOWD BURKE

Edna K. Dowd Burke, 84, of 1136 Rufus Brewer Road, Siler City died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Sun Bridge Care Facilities in Siler City.

Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 29 at Meroney United Methodist Church in Bear Creek with Rev. Jim Whittaker and Rev. Dadid Wade officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Burke was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker. She was a member of Meroney United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest & Annie Dowd, husband John E. Burke, daughter Dorothy Ann Burke, brother Vernon Dowd and a son-in-law John R. Hall.

Survivors are sons, Larry Burke and wife Fannie of Siler City, Buddy Burke and wife Linda of Siler City, Roger Burke and wife Lillie of Pittsboro; daughters, Mary Catherine Green and husband Jackie of Pittsboro, Mamie Lee Hall of Siler City, Helen K. King and husband J.C. of Woodbridge, VA, Ellen F. Dixon and husband Mike, Bonnie L. Allen and husband Winfred, Flida M. Smith and husband Lee; all of Siler City; brother, Bobby Dowd and wife Janie of Siler City; sisters, Jeanette Dowd Dollar of Siler City, Durema Dowd Burke and husband C.R. of Asheboro; sister-in-law, Polly Dowd Duncan of Siler City; twenty grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and four step grandchildren.

JOE A. PARNELL

Mr. Joseph Arthur Parnell, 73, of 4372 Jones Street Ext., Ramseur died Tuesday ( 10-28-2003) at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday (10-30-2003) at Ramseur Wesleyan Church with Rev. Gary Moger and Pastor Tommy E. Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Iris Parnell, of the home; daughters, Joann Braxton of Ramseur, Sharon Richardson of Ramseur; sons, Mickey Parnell of Henderson, Eddie Parnell of Ramseur; sisters, Geneva Sherman of Richmond, VA, Rosa Lee Yeagle of Sunset Harbor; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

KATHLEEN MURDOCK

Kathleen Murdock, 85, of 922 NC Hwy 902, died Thursday (10-30-2003), at Central Carolina Hospital.

Graveside services were held 3 p.m. Saturday (11-1-2003) at Chatham United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and a member of Chatham United Methodist Church.

Survivors are a daughter, Nancy M. Newton of St. Simons, GA; two sons, Bill Murdock of Apex and Larry Murdock of New Bern; three sisters, Betty Morgan of Goldston, Lillian Bright of Bonlee and Bernice Higgins of Greensboro; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ROBERT JACKSON MURRAY

Robert Jackson (Jack) Murray, 71, of 1275 Siler City - Glendon Road, Siler City died Wednesday ( 10-29-2003) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday (11-1-2003) at Oakley Baptist Church in Siler City with Rev. Matthew Taylor officiating.

Mr. Murray was a native of Chatham County a member of Oakley Baptist Church and was a retired contractor/carpenter.

Surviving are his wife, Mary N. Murray of Siler City; daughter, Kathy M. Jones and husband, Bob of Summerville, SC; step-son, Ricky Stephens of Pilot Mountain; sister, Arlene Norwood, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Riverbend Baptist Church, 7035 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, SC 29418.

WESTLEY WAYNE WALKER, II

Westley Wayne Walker, II, 17, of 615 Poe Road, Siler City died Sunday (11-2-2003) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday (11-6-2003) at Edward Hill Friends Meeting in Siler City with Rev. Leonard Moore and Rev. Mike Crosby officiating. Burial followed in church cemetery.

Westley was a native of Chatham County and a Junior at Jordan-Matthews High School. He was formerly employed with Wendy's and attended Community Baptist Church.

Surviving are his parents, Lewis and Margaret Walker Moore of Siler City; brother, John W. Walker of Lebanon, TN; sisters, Christy Phillips of Myrtle Beach, SC, Elizabeth Gonzales of Knoxville, Lestley Walker, Michelle Moore and Melissa Jordan all Siler City; paternal grandparents, Lynn and A.V. Moore of Bear Creek; paternal grandmother, Janie Trogdon of Siler City; maternal grandparents, Imogene and Roy Beeler of Knoxville, TN and paternal great-grandmother, Fleta Trogdon of Siler City.
