HASSEL THOMAS

Hassel Thomas, 76, of Newport, died Friday, (05-28-2004) at his residence.

Services were held at 11 am Monday, (05-31-2004) at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Stroud and Pastor Terry McInnis officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Mr. Thomas was a lifetime farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Thomas; son, Frank Thomas; daughters, Linda Sapp, Darlene Caldwell, Karnell Barley, all of Newport; brothers, Gaston Thomas of Westville, Fl., Roy David Thomas of Newport; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

BARBARA JORDAN

Barbara Bremner Jordan of Goldston, died Tuesday, (05-25-2004) in Florida.

Mrs. Jordan was a native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was a member of the Christian Science Society, a member of the First Church of Christian Scientist in Boston and the First Church of Christian Scientist in Sanford.

Survivors include sons, Paul Sanford Jordan of Goldston, Allen Brewster Jordan and Peter Craig Jordan, both of Maine; daughters, Susan Malcolm Jordan Domato and Nancy Jean Jordan Kirkpatrick, both of Florida; sister, Geraldine Bremner Jones of Florida; sixteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.

FRANCES H. FERRELL

Mrs. Frances H. Ferrell, 75, of Rougemont, died Sunday, (05-30-2004).

Services were held Wednesday, (06-02-2004) at Hudson Chapel with Pastor Leon Shearer officiating. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Farrell was a native of Chatham County. She retired from Big Star Foods as a deli manager.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn Farrell; daughters, Teresa Shearer of Cathedral City, Ca., Glenda Johnson of Siler City, Jane Tippett of Oxford; sons, Carl G. Ferrell II of Wallhalla, S.C., Michael David Ferrell of Franklinton, Timothy Mark Ferrell of Pineville; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

JOSEPH EUGENE FOX

Joseph Eugene Fox, 81 of Siler City died Friday, May 28, 2004 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 31, 2004 at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Siler City with Rev. Lamont Hemminger officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Fox was a native of Chatham County, a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Silk Hope Ruritan Club. He retired from Southern States, Inc. in Siler City.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Annie Ruth Perry Fox of Siler City; daughter, Becky Ann Fox Baldwin of Pinehurst, ; son, Richard E. Fox of Siler City; brother, Elmer L. Fox, Siler City; sisters, Ollie F. Buckner, Siler City, Lois F. PerMar, Daytona Beach, Fl., Daphne F. Teague, Siler City; grandson, Michael Fox, granddaughters, Deborah F. Fields, Angela Baldwin Keith, Ashley Baldwin Prince and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3631 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

ROBERT T. FOUST, SR.

Robert T. Foust, Sr., 81, of Rockford, Il, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Chatham County and an Army veteran. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lien Foust, parents, Oda and Henry Foust, sister, Virginia F. Jackson, and a brother, Richard Foust.

He is survived by a son, Robert (Tom) Foust, Jr. and wife, Joan of Rockford, Il., one grandson, John Foust; and one sister, Linda F. Clark of Pittsboro.

RICHARD WESLEY (DICK) LOY

Richard Wesley (Dick) Loy, 78, of 5 Country Club Drive, Siler City died Sunday, May 16, 2004.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Bear Creek with Rev. Joe Castell and Rev. Harold Fletcher officiating.

Dick was a native of Alamance County and was owner and operator of PALCO, Inc., a sales representative of poultry processing equipment. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and former Treasurer at the First Wesleyan Church. He was a graduate of N.C. State University, a former employee of the N.C. Department of Agriculture, and a former VO-AG teacher at Liberty High School. He will be loved and missed by his family and friends and always remembered for his unique sense of humor. He loved playing golf and enjoyed restoring old cars. Mr. Loy was a member of the Chatham Street Rod Association and a Navy veteran of WW II.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Scott Loy of the home; son, Richard W. (Skip) Loy, Jr. of Haw River; daughters, Carolyn Loy Sumner and Anne Loy Stanfield, both of Mebane; step-son, Jody M. Brafford of Goldston; sister, Helen Loy Hartman, of Burlington; granddaughters, Emily Corbett of Wilmington, Anna Lauren Brafford and Josi Brafford, both of Goldston, Anna Grey Stanfield of Mooresville; grandsons, Alec M. Brafford of Goldston, Adam Stanfield of Charlotte, special cousins; Mack Loy of Burlington and June White of Greenville, S.C.

Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church, PO Box 488, Siler City, N.C. 27344 or to the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 212, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

DILLARD CLETUS PHILLIPS

Dillard Cletus Phillips, 64, of Kernersville, died Wednesday, (05-05-2004) at Forsyth Medical Center.

A private memorial service will be held.

He was a native of Chatham County and a previous partner of Huffman’s Barbershop in Greensboro.

Surviving are his wife, Pam Bargiol Phillips of the home; son, Chad Phillips; daughters, Crystal Faircloth of High Point, Carrie Snyder of Charleston, S.C.; brother, Gerald Phillips of Hampstead; and four grandchildren.

GURNEY RAY FARRELL

Gurney Ray Farrell, 76, of Thompson Street, Pittsboro died Wednesday, (05-05-2004) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Services were conducted Saturday, (05-08-2004) at Hanks chapel united Church of Christ with Rev. Kelly Shiflett officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Farrell was a native of Chatham County, a member of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, where he had served as a trustee, and a World War II veteran, serving in the US Army. He was employed by Chatham Mills for 35 years and then worked for the East Chatham Rescue Squad for 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Maness Farrell; daughters, Dianne Lee, Ann Selph, both of Chapel Hill, Patricia Batchelor of Pittsboro; sister, Elizabeth Thrift of Pittsboro; and four granddaughters.

Memorials may be directed to the Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ Building Fund, 190 Hanks Chapel Church Road, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.

FRANCES KING SYKES

Mrs. Frances King Sykes, 76, 2237 Cool Springs Rd, Sanford died Tuesday (05-04-2004) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Services were held Saturday (05-08-2004) at Rich & Thompson, Burlington, with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sykes was a native of Alamance County, member of Davis Street United Methodist Church, and a Certified Nursing Assistant who worked at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro with Alzheimer’s patients.

Survivors include daughters, Marie Sykes Lovero of Conway, S.C., Evelyn Sykes May of Sanford, Peggy Sykes Foster of Fairfax, Va., Anita Sykes of Georgetown, S.C.; son, Walker Ervin Sykes, Jr. of Sanford; sister, Ruth Nicholson of Burlington; brothers, Paul King of Pleasant Garden, James King and Ralph King, both of Burlington; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

VIRGINIA SEAGROVES POOLE

Virginia Seagroves Poole, 94, of Launis Street, Pittsboro died Friday, (05-07-2004) at the Laurels of Chatham.

Services were held Tuesday (05-11-2004) at Pittsboro Presbyterian Church with Rev. Troy Lesher-Thomas and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Poole was a native of Chatham County, and retired from Chatham Mills, Inc. She was a member of Pittsboro Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Women of the Church and the Ladies Auxillary of the VFW.

Survivors include brother, Harold Seagroves of Pittsboro; sisters, Evelyn Ward, Georgia Beard, and Edith Gnau, all of Pittsboro; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pittsboro Presbyterian Church.

LOIS WHITE DARK

Lois White Dark, 90, Carbonton Road, Sanford died Friday, (05-07-2004) at Woodbine Nursing Home, Alexandria, Va.

Graveside services were held Monday, (05-10-2004) in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City with Rev. Sue Flippin, officiating.

Mrs. Dark was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker. She was a graduate of woman’s College in Greensboro.

Survivors include a daughter; Elaine D. Rhymers of Alexandria; and three grandchildren.

JULIA WILLIAMS MATTHEWS

Julia Williams Matthews, 85, of 4814 Moncure-Pittsboro Road, Moncure, died Friday (05-07-2004) at her home.

Funeral services were held Monday, (05-10-2004) at New Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a member of New Salem Baptist Church and retired from Boise Cascade.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy Williams of Moncure, and one grandson.

ELEANORE FRASER WILKINSON

Mrs. Eleanore Fraser Wilkinson, 80, of Pittsboro died Wednesday, (05-05-2004) at Pittsboro Christian Village.

Memorial service was conducted by Mr. Sim Gay Saturday, (05-08-2004) in the Chapel of Pittsboro Christian Village. Committal services were held Friday, (05-07-2004) at Chatham Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wilkinson was a native of Detroit, Mi., where she attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music. She was employed with Michigan Bell Telephone for seventeen years.

Survivors include here husband, John Frederick “Jack” Wilkinson, son, Don Wilkinson; and two granddaughters.
