Elmarie Emerson Alston of Greensboro (formerly of Goldston), died Monday, (02-21-2005) at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, (02-26-2005) at Love and Faith Christian Fellowship Church in Greensboro.

Survivors include sons, Wayne Alston of Greensboro, Ronald Alston of Charlotte, Reginald Alston of Sacramento, CA; sister, Sallie Emerson Underwood of Sanford; brother, Ernest Emerson,

Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren, eight great-grand-children, and one great-grandchild.

JOHNNIE J. FLINCHUM

Johnnie J. Flinchum, 67, formerly of Carthage, died Monday, (02-21-2005) at SunBridge Health Care & Rehabilitation in Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm Friday at Calvary Baptist Church, Carthage with Rev. Terry Burris and Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, with military rites.

He was a native of Moore County, a U.S. Air Force veteran, a licensed practical nurse with various veterans’ hospitals and retired from the Salisbury Veterans Hospital.

Surviving are daughters, Mary Ratkey of Tallahassee, Fla., Kim Jackson of Reno, Nev.; sons, John B. Flinchum of of Sparks, Nev., Harley Flinchum of Fruitland, Idaho; sisters, Louvene Mathews of Carthage, Johnsie Harkins of Cary, Phyllis Phillips of Bear Creek; brothers, Phil Flinchum of Cary, Mitchell Flinchum of West Palm Beach, Fla.; stepmother, Mazie Wallace Flinchum of Carthage; stepsisters, Catherine Hussey and Brenda Burks, both of Carthage, Faye Oldham of Robbins, Margaret Cheek of Kings Mountain, Carolyn Hussey of Ocean Isle; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, c/o Gregory Ritter, 11218 NC 24/27, Carthage, NC 28327.

TOBE JONES

Tobe Jones of Shelbyville, TN, formerly of Bonlee died Wednesday, (02-16-2005)

Funeral services were held Saturday, (02-19-2005) at the First Church of God in Shelbyville, TN., with Rev. James Warren officiating. Burial was at Newgrove Cemetery in Blanche, TN.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Jones of the home; mother, Pennie Jones Herring of Mt. Olive; sons, Timothy and Michael Jones of Mt. Olive; daughter, Lisa Pickett of Hallville; brothers, Elwood Jones and Kenneth Jones, both of Mt. Olive; sister, Evelyn Futrell of Deep Run; stepsons, Douglas Dunnavant of Bonlee, Mark and Tommy Dunnavant of Shelbyville, TN; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

MARTHA H. CLARKE

Martha Gayle Hackney Clarke, 54, of 695 Moore Road, Asheboro died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2005 at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro with Dr. John S. Rogers, officiating.

Mrs. Clarke was a native of Arlington, Va. and received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Campbell University. She was a former teacher in Northern Virginia, attended First Baptist Church in Asheboro, and was a member of the D.A.R. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Parks and Estelle Councilman Hackney.

She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Clarke of Fairfax, VA; brother, James P. Hackney, Jr. of Siler City; uncle, James Bullard of Asheboro; uncle and aunt, Archie and Helen Councilman of Harpers Cross Roads; aunts, Alma Hackney of Sanford, Margaret Hackney of Siler City, and Grace Snyder of Asheboro.

NORMAN F. BREWINGTON, JR.

Norman F. Brewington, Jr., 67, of Chapel Hill died Wednesday, (02-23-2005) at UNC Hospital.

Mr. Brewington was a native of Colonial Beach, Va., worked for National Casein of Riverton, NJ and Chicago, Il.

A memorial service was held at Light House Baptist Church on Saturday, (02-26-2005).

Survivors include his wife, Betty Brewington of Chapel Hill; sons, Rick Austin of Chapel Hill and David Austin of Sanford; and three grandchildren.

HAROLENE "TOT" MORRIS ALLRED

Harolene "Tot" Morris Allred, 69, of Pittsboro died Saturday, (02-26-2005) in Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Tuesday (03-01-2005) at Pittsboro Baptist Church with Rev. Tripp Harmon officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Allred was a native of Jackson County, a graduate of Asheboro High School and she attended Atlantic Christian College. She established "TOTS" Playtime Academy in Pittsboro, where she worked until she retired.

Survivors include sons, Kyle Allred of Little River, S.C., Kent Allred and Kirk Allred, both of Pittsboro; daughter, Kimber A. Pilkington of Pittsboro; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pittsboro Baptist Church Renovation Fund, PO Box 696, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

MARIE SHIELDS MANESS

Mrs. Marie Shields Maness, 76, of High Falls died Sunday, (02-27-2005) at Pinehurst Nursing Center in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held at 3 pm on Wednesday, (03-02-2005) at High Falls Friends Meeting with Pastor Robert Kidd and Pastor Kenneth Bouldin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Maness was a native of Chatham County and was retired from Burlington Industries, Ramseur Plant. She was a member of High Falls Friends Church where she was a former choir member.

Survivors include her husband, John R. (Bud) Maness of the home; daughter, Laine Williams of High Falls; brother, Quinton Shields of High Falls; sisters, Beatrice Hill of High Falls, Lucy Wallace and Eula Phillips, both of Bennett; and one granddaughter.

HENRY MASKEL STUART

Henry Maskel Stuart, 76 of Burlington died Friday, (02-18-2005) at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, (02-20-2005) at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham, with Rev. Bud Wrenn officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Wesleyan Church Cemetery.

Mr. Stuart was born in Alamance County, former resident of Siler City, a member of Community Baptist Church in Siler City, and retired from furniture manufacturing.

Survivors include daughters, Dail Stuart, Gibsonville, Diann Stuart, Burlington, Michele Bennett, Mebane; sons, Ronnie Stuart, Robbins, Alan Stuart, Burlington, Clayton Stuart, Gibsonville; brothers, Odell Stuart, Snow Camp, Jasper Stuart, Graham; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the family c/o McClure funeral service, PO Drawer 267, Graham, N.C. 27253-0267.

THOMAS H. PIKE

Mr. Thomas H. Pike, 85, of Burlington died Monday (02-28-2005) at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday (03-03-2005) at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lee Roy Pittard officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Pike was a native of Chatham County, and retired from Rice Hosiery as a dyer. He was employed by Burlington Honda as a courtesy escort for customer service. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, World War II U.S. Army veteran and former member of the Alamance Civitan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hazel Fogleman Pike of the home; son, Steve Pike of Greensboro; step-daughters, Pam Horton of Burlington, Linda Freeman of Greensboro; sisters, Mrs. Hazel P. Isley of Gibsonville, Mrs. Rochelle P. Pettigrew of Burlington, Mrs. Virginia P. Hackney of Siler City; and two step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, (03-02-2005). At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist church, 609 Trail #2, Burlington, NC 27215.

JANIE F. MORGAN

Janie Lois Frye Morgan, 82, of 3595 Bensalem Church Road, Eagle Springs died Sunday, February 27 2005 at Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Big Oak Christian Church with Dr. Zeb Moss and Rev. Robert Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Morgan was a native of Moore County and retired from Stanley Furniture. She was a homemaker and a member of Eagle Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odie Lee Morgan and two sons, Roger F. Morgan and Clifford L. Morgan.

Survivors include a daughter, Faye M. Reeves of Pittsboro; son, Larry W. Morgan of the home; six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, and at other times, at the residence.

EDNA MILLER LAND

Edna Miller Land, 104, widow of Walter G. Land died Friday, February 18, 2005 at Tanbark Health Care Center in Lexington, KY.

Mimi, as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was born in Jessamine County, KY, daughter of the late James and Carrie Hisle Miller and she was a member of Central Christian Church.

Surviving are daughters, Marjorie Jane (Earle C.) Fowler of Chapel Hill, Edna Land (Reuben) Naylor of Lexington, KY; four grandchildren, Marjorie Ann (Karl) Kachergis of Pittsboro, Walter Earle (Gail) Fowler of Durham, Debra Jane Naylor of Lexington, KY, Walter Land Naylor of Danville, KY; a grandaughter-in-law, Gail Fowler of Durham, and seven great-grandchildren, Emily Kachergis and George Kachergis of Pittsboro, Grant Fowler, David Fowler and Sarah Fowler, all of Durham, Brian Land Naylor of Lexington, KY and Brent Edward Naylor of of Tulsa, OK.

A grandson, Thomas Land Fowler of Durham preceded her in death.

Private services were held Monday, February 21, 2005 in the Lexington Cemetery conducted by Rev. William K. Simmons.

MRS. MATTIE LEMONS PURVIS

Mrs. Mattie Lemons Purvis, 95, of 8721 Bennett Road, Bennett died Saturday at SunBridge Care in Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feburary 21, 2005 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Mike Austin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Purvis was a Lee County native, a homemaker, and the widow of Newlin Purvis.

Survivors include daughters, Nettie Margaret Gatlin and husband Recil of Asheboro, Esther Maness and husband Reece of Bennett; son, Vesta Purvis and wife Nancy of Bennett; son-in-law, Charles Gatlin of Bennett; grandchildren, Delmar and Jeff Gatlin of Bennett, Jason Maness of Climax, Ashley Brewer and Angie Hege of Bennett, and great-grandchildren, Cody and Mason Hege and Bailey and Carson Brewer, all of Bennett.

Mrs. Purvis was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Joyce Gatlin.
