JANIE HESTER BURCH FRAZIER
Janie Hester Burch Frazier, 75, of 6760 Foushee Road, Ramseur died Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.

Mrs. Frazier was born in Caswell County on July 20, 1937, the daughter of Raney D. and Carrie (Wilson) Burch. Janie was an honor graduate of Bartlett-Yancey High School and attended Elon College. She retired as secretary and office manager with the N. C. Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Siler City office. She worked for Jefferson Standard, Siler City Mills, Andrews & Stone Attorneys and was involved with Congressman Ike Andrews campaign. She was of the Methodist faith, an avid reader, enjoyed collecting antiques, traveling and going to the gym. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Nancy Marie Burch.

Our gratitude to the Neurology – Oncology and Rehabilitation Services at Cone Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital, 3 Rd Floor West and a special gratitude to Dr. Peter Ennever and staff at Cone Health, High Point.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Steve M. Frazier, two daughters, Lisa L. Kellner and husband, Jeffrey of Greensboro, Stefanie Frazier Moody and husband, Bradley of Julian; one son, Brett D. Langley and wife, Rhonda of Sanford; one brother, Rainey “Dickie” D. Burch, Jr. and wife, Janice of Lewisville, NC; grandchildren, Jessica Elmore, Dustin and R. D. Langley, Sydney, Aydsen Moody, and Cole Kellner.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Cooper Cemetery, Yanceyville, with Rev. Tom McDowell officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, W. Chatham Relay for Life, C/O Betty Terry, 519 S. Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344; or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home of Siler City is assisting the Frazier Family.

ANNE SMITH COOPER
Cary – Anne Smith Cooper, born October 8, 1927 in Laurinburg, NC, died August 23, 2012.

Anne is survived by her sister, Betty Smith Sanders of Morrisville, NC; brother, Earl Ray Smith, Jr. of Polk City, FL; nieces, Carol Sanders Jensen and Robin Smith Callahan; nephews, Robert Lynne Smith, Michael Dale Smith, James Hugh Smith, Jr. and Lewis Smith.

She is predeceased by her parents, Earl Ray and Mabel Stroupe Smith; and brothers, Robert Graham Smith and James Hugh Smith.

There will be a graveside service at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2012.

JAMES CICERO JONES
James Cicero Jones, 80, of Siler City died Tuesday, (08-14-2012) at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

No services are planned at this time.

Mr. Jones was born in Stokes County on November 21, 1931, the son of Guy and Lelia (Copple) Jones. He was an Army Veteran and worked in textiles. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sandra Kay Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Kate (Beal) Jones of the home; daughters, Rebecca Green of Thomasville, Teresa Lynn Jones of Florida, Lisa J. Stovall of Goldston: sons, James Junior Jones of Chapel Hill, Roy Lee Jones of Madison, Ricky Charles Jones of Siler City; sister, Emma Smith of Denton; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MATTIE F. MILLER
Mattie F. Miller, 94, of Bear Creek died Tuesday (08-07-2012) at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

Funeral services were held Saturday (08-11-2012) at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Reginald Tyson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was a native of Chatham County and a member of Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara M. Marsh of Bear Creek; sons, George Miller of Durham, Hoy Miller, Jr. of Maryland; brother, Ray Foxx of Richland, S.C.; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM PORTER COCHRANE, SR.
William Porter Cochrane, Sr., 90, of Bear Creek died Wednesday, (08-15-2012) at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

The funeral was held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Roach and Don Davidson officiating. Burial followed in Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte at 3:15 p.m.

Mr. Cochrane was born in Mecklenburg County on June 29, 1922, the son of Robert Bryce and Maybelle (Porter) Cochrane. He was an Army veteran of WW II and had worked as an engineer with AT&T phone service. He was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby (Townsend) Cochrane of the home; daughter, Mary Katherine Cochrane Hamm of Bear Creek; sons, Richard Stephen Cochrane of Waxhaw, William Porter Cochrane, Jr. of Southern Pines; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to SPCA of Chatham County or a charity of donor’s choice.

WILLIAM G. CUNNINGHAM, Cmdr. USNV ret.
William G. Cunningham, 78 of Galloway Ridge, passed away on Tuesday (08-14-2012) .

The Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday (08-18-2012) at the Newman Center in Chapel Hill.

A native of Brooklyn and a graduate of Villanova, Bill spent his career in banking and real estate. He was active in the Catholic Church by serving as Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; their three children, Kathy, Muffie, BJ; and two grandchildren.

Donations can be made to Covenant House, 5 Penn Plaza, New York, NY 10001.

WILMA BERNICE HACKNEY ENNIS
Mrs. Wilma Bernice Hackney Ennis, 79, of Pittsboro died Monday (08-20-2012) at The Laurels of Chatham.

Services will be held at 1 o’clock Thursday, (08-23-2012) at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Interment will follow in Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

Mrs. Ennis was born in Chatham County on March 22, 1933, the daughter of Garland and Rose Hackney. She was employed by Webster Poultry Company and later, worked as a nursing assistant. She attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Pittsboro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and six siblings.

Survivors include daughters, Louise Riddle and Ann Headen of Pittsboro; sons, Mike Ellis and Joe Ellis, both of Pittsboro; brother, Tommy Hackney of South Carolina; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends visited with the family from 6 to 7 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

EARL EDWARD SHORT
Earl Edward Short, 88, of Siler City went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Short was born December 30, 1923, the son of Lacy Herbert and Daisy (Johnson) Short. Earl was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church, a Navy Veteran of WW II and retired as a teacher from the Chatham County Schools. Earl was preceded in death by a son, Steve Short and wife, Judy and their daughter, Ashley.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hilda (Kennedy) Short; one daughter, Dale Short Kiser and husband, Larry of Kingsport, TN; one sister, Josephine S. Pike of Siler City; grandchildren, Wendy McConnell and husband, Tim, Sophie Noble and husband, Israel and great-grandchildren, Abby, Jenna and Brooke McConnell.

The family received friends Friday, August 17, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City with Rev. Bob Boyd and Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

HAZEL BEAL PHILLIPS
Hazel Beal Phillips, 84, of 609 Beal Road, Goldston died Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation

Mrs. Phillips was born in Chatham County on April 25, 1928, the daughter of Huss and Nora (Barber) Beal. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and retired from Glendale Hosiery after 43 years of service in the folding department. Hazel loved watching the Carolina Tar Heels play basketball and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burnice F. Phillips; her parents; brothers, Orby Beal, Garland Beal and Melvin Beal, Sr.; sisters, Marie Brewer and Ruby Land.

She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Phillips and two sons, Larry Phillips, Jerry Phillips and wife, Mistie, all of Goldston; one sister, Millicent Dickens of Nashville, NC; grandchildren, Lorie Johnson and husband, Jeremiah of Goldston, Matt Phillips of Siler City, Caleb Phillips and Seth Phillips of Goldston; great-grandchildren, Kristen Garner and Carson Garner of Goldston; sisters-in-law, Mary Cox of Asheboro, Lillie Beal of Goldston; brothers-in-law, Bobby Phillips and wife, Elmo of Bear Creek, Lewis Phillips and wife, Jeanette of Siler City, and Wilbur Rives of Bear Creek.

The family received friends Thursday, August 16, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Friday, August 17, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston with Rev. Barry Lawrence and Rev. Grady Dickens officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

THOMAS WESLEY HUNTER
Thomas Wesley Hunter deployed this life from his earthly home Friday, August 3, 2012, in Moyock, N.C. at the age of 47. Wesley was born and raised in Moncure and Sanford, N.C.

Wesley was the husband of Tweety Childress Hunter, the father of Olivia Hunter and step-father of Brittni Baxter. He is survived by his mother, Jane Crutchfield Hunter of Moncure; father, Hugh Hunter and stepmother, Pam Hunter of Olivia; sister, Elizabeth Brinkley and husband Pat Brinkley and children, Tyler and Alex of Fort Meyers, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Oma Andrews Crutchfield, who was instrumental in the rearing of Wesley.

Wes had given half of his life serving and defending his country. He retired in 2010 as a Fire Control Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy.

A memorial service was held August the 18th at HD Oliver Funeral Chapel in Norfolk, Va. There will be a later memorial service held at Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Chatham County where his ashes will rest beside his grandparents, Sam and Oma Crutchfield.

ALDENA PARNELL JOHNSON
Aldena “Memaw” Parnell Johnson, 84, of 545 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City died Monday, August 20, 2012 at her residence.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Lee County on December 31, 1927, the daughter of Charles Luther and Mollie Mae (Klass) Parnell. Aldena was a member of Hickory Mountain Baptist Church and was retired from Collins & Aikman where she worked in quality control. She was a member of the Lady Bird Bowling League for many years.

She is survived by two daughters, Darlene Lett (Allan) of Siler City, Tamra Bowe (Stephen) of Lehigh Acres, FL; one brother, Wallace Wayne Parnell of Texas; grandchildren, Melissa Milholen Hockaday (Rodney), Ernie Milholen (Marcia) and Seth Bowe; step-grandchildren, Chad Bowe (Jennifer), Jennifer Bowe, Phillip Lett (Faye), Sarah Lett and Daniel Lett (Bethany) .

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 23, 2012 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 4 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rodney Hellard and Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

DORIS ANN BUCKNER HART
Doris Ann Buckner Hart, 76, of 58 Clyde Underwood Road, Siler City died Monday, August 20, 2012 at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Mrs. Hart was born in Chatham County on July 28, 1936, the daughter of Tull H. and Gertrude (Johnson) Buckner. She had been employed as an inspector with Kellwood Hosiery in Liberty and Siler City. She was retired as the owner/operator of a home daycare. Doris was a member of Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. She had served for 20 years as the director of the nursery at Rives Chapel Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, working with her flowers and baking.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Willie M. “Jimmie” Hart, Jr.; two daughters, Sharon Baird and husband, Bruce of Kinston, Julie Beal and special friend, Steven Everwine of Siler City; five sisters, Cora Elkins, Louise Adcock, Patsy Corder, Susan Coggins all of Siler City, Bronna Cockman of Bear Creek; two brothers, Ronnie Buckner, Mitchell Buckner, both of Siler City; grandsons, Joshua and wife Ruthanne, Ethan, Luke, Caleb and Jacob Baird and Dustin Beal.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 23, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Friday, August 24, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church, 175 Moon’s Chapel Road, Siler City with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church, 175 Moon’s Chapel Road, Siler City, NC 27344 or the Alzheimer’s Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
