ROBERT LINCOLN “BOB” HELBERT
Mr. Robert Lincoln “Bob” Helbert, 78, of Fuquay-Varina, formerly of Pittsboro, died Wednesday (08-08-2012) at Rex Rehab and Nursing Care in Apex.

The Celebration of Life service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, (08-10-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro with Pastors Ray Gooch and Clyde Denny presiding. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.

Bob was born in Coeburn, VA, October 14, 1933, the son of Luther Thomas Helbert and Elsie Mae Beck Helbert. He was a meat market manager with A&P Grocery, retiring after 27 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Loveda; son, Robby Helbert of Fuquay-Varina; daughter, Roberta Clark of Fuquay-Varina; brother, Howard Helbert of Marion, OH; sisters, Donna Hurst of Blountville, TN, Nancy Nichols of Florida; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607.

NELL WILLIAMS MORRIS
Mrs. Nell Williams Morris, 79, of Pittsboro, died Sunday, (08-12-2012) in her home.

The celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (08-16-2012) at Solid Rock Baptist Church, with Pastors Jerry Sanders, Shane Arnold and Sammy Kay presiding. Interment will follow in Bynum Cemetery.

Mrs. Morris was born April 3, 1933 in Durham County, a daughter of Pauline Williams. She graduated from Pittsboro High School, retired from Triem, Inc., and was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother; husband, Willie “Dub” Morris; and a half-sister, Melissa Shuler Allen.

Survivors include two daughters, Tami Gales and Toni Sanders, both of Pittsboro; step-brother, “Speed” Williams of Shelby; and three grandchildren.

Friends visited with the family on Wednesday night from 6 – 8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Solid Rock Baptist Church, 3903 US 64 West, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation.

THOMAS HAROLD “TOMMY” TERRY, JR.

Thomas Harold “Tommy” Terry, Jr., 61, of 7316 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, died Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Terry was born in Chatham County on May 16, 1951, the son of Harold and Edith (Braxton) Terry. He was a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting and the owner-operator of Kustom Auto Recyclers in Liberty. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kimberly Sutton Terry of the home; four sons, Chris Terry (Chastity) of Liberty, Kevin Terry of Siler City, Josh Combs (Tammy) of Burlington, Adam Terry (Erica) of Siler City; one sister: Carolyn Terry Skowron (John) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Daylin Locklear, Chanceler Terry, Addison Combs, Alexis Terry, Trey, Seth, Breanna, and Sierra Dickerson; two nieces and two nephews.

The family received friends Thursday, August 9, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Friday, August 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Plainfield Friends Meeting, 1956 Plainfield Church Road, Siler City with Pastor Larry McEntire officiating. Burial followed in the Meeting cemetery.

RUBY HANCOCK HAMMER

Ruby Hancock Hammer, 91, of Siler City died Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mrs. Hammer was born in Chatham County on February 23, 1921, the daughter of George Graham and Mossie (Wilson) Hancock. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She had worked for A J Schneierson and Sons and retired from Byrd’s Food Stores where she managed the deli department. Ruby enjoyed cooking, sewing, traveling and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Vernon Hammer and a brother, Roy Hancock.

She is survived by one son, Garrett Hammer and wife, Carol of Siler City; five sisters, Beulah Hammer of Goldston, Augusta Gilliland of Goldston, Joyce Headen of Siler City, Jearline Brown of Bennett, Linda Jones of Pleasant Garden; grandchildren, Paula Goodson and husband, David of Wake Forest, Craig Hammer and wife, Sheila of Siler City, Jody Hammer of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Savannah and Taylor Goodson, Bryce, Connor and Garrison Hammer.

The family received friends Friday, August 10, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the home of the son.

The funeral will be Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston with Rev. Barry Lawrence and Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

WILLIAM DARRELL BREWER
William Darrell Brewer, 71, of 2345 South Chatham Avenue, Siler City, died Friday, August 10, 2012 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Brewer was born in Chatham County on December 30, 1940, the son of Marcus and Exie Sumner Brewer. Darrell retired from Townsend Poultry as a supervisor and was employed with CVS Pharmacies. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

He is survived by three daughters, Teresa B. Withers (Steve) of Siler City, Donna B. Nunley (Doug) of Silk Hope, and Janel B. Tyson (Michael) of Marshville; one son, Marcus Brewer (Cindy) of Siler City; one sister, Patsy B. Stewart of Asheboro; grandchildren, Douglas and William Nunley, Christopher Lewis and Brayden Brewer; great grandchildren, Jacob, Dalton, Aleah, Levi, Kirstyn and Kadin; and special friend, Faye Brooks.

The family received friends Monday, August 13, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City and other times at the home of a daughter, Teresa B. Withers, 363 Oakley Church Road, Siler City.

The funeral was held Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 120 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City with Rev. Robert Griffith and Rev. Jason Golden officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

HOMER M. BARNES
Homer Barnes, 92, of Pittsboro (formerly of Winston-Salem), died Saturday, August 11, 2012. He was born in 1920, the son of M. G. and Margaret Barnes in Boone, NC. He graduated from the Lutheran Home for Children’s High School in Konnarock, VA. He was a veteran of World War II, and served as Radio and Radar Operator on anti-submarine patrol with 600 hours of operation in the air, and received combat and tactical pilot training with 289 hours of pilot time. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Second Lieutenant, Squadron H 2510th Army Air Force Base Unit, with a Purple Heart, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and American Theater Medal.

He was a civilian Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor, employed by Cannon Airport in Charlotte, NC in 1946 and Hawthorne Flying Service at Greensboro-High Point Airport in 1947. He graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from NC State College in 1952, worked for DuPont in Delaware, and retired from his career as a Professional Electrical Engineer from Western-Electric in Winston-Salem in 1983.

He owned and flew a 1946 Aeronca 11AC Chief from 1986 to 2006 and was a member of the United Flying Octogenarians. For 47 years, he and his wife were active members of Highland Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Barnes, to whom he was married for nearly 59 years. He is survived by two sons; David Barnes (Diane) of Louisville, GA, Thomas Barnes (Eve) of Pittsboro; one daughter, Marcia Barnes Sargent (Les) of Oklahoma; three grandsons, Matthew Barnes of Pfafftown, Neil and Scott Barnes of Pittsboro; two brothers, Howard Barnes (Marline) of Granite Falls, Harold Barnes of Ormond Beach, FL; and a number of nephews, nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Cypress Presbyterian Church in Lobelia. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The Barnes family extends its deep appreciation to the caregivers who worked so closely and professionally with Homer, and to Libby Hart of UNC-Hospice.

Memorials may be made to: The Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047; or flowers are appreciated.

MARY DARK RODGERS
Mrs. Mary Rodgers, 82, passed away at home, Friday, August 10, 2012.

A native of Chatham County, Mary was born a daughter to the late Samuel Dark and Nottie Bowden. Mrs. Rodgers was a homemaker and celebrates 62 years of love for and devotion to her husband, Arthur.

In addition to parents, Mrs. Rodgers was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Rodgers Jr.; and two brothers, Willis and Wade Dark.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur, of the home; sons, Brian Rodgers and wife Gloria, William Rodgers, both of Pittsboro; her daughter, Hope Rodgers-Medina and husband Daniel of Greensboro, NC; brother, Harvey Dark of Staley, NC; sisters, Inez Glover of Liberty, NC, Lucille Scotton-Currie of Siler City, NC, Ruth Patterson of Liberty, Genice Eubanks of Washington, DC; grandsons, Zachary Rodgers and William Rodgers, Jr.; granddaughters, Davida Rodgers, Sidney Alexander, Courtney Rodgers, Tressalyn Cordaro; and great-granddaughter, Jordyn Rodgers.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m., Monday, August 13, 2012 at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion with the Rev. Anthony Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

VELMA YARBOROUGH BURNS
Velma Yarborough Burns, age 96, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville, VA for the past seven years.

Velma was born August 2, 1916 in Jonesboro, NC, the daughter of Neal B. and Joanna Cox Yarborough.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Clayton Burns, sister Lois Y. Gregson, brother Henson Yarborough, and nephews, James E. Gregson and Neal Gregson.

She is survived by nephews, Robert Gregson (Mary Jo) of Cookeville, TN, Larry Farrell (Wandra) of Pittsboro, Stanley Long of Raleigh, Jerry Long of Durham; nieces, Linda Smith (Archie) of Asheboro, Jane Osborne (William) of Salisbury, as well as other great nieces and nephews; her close friend, Gladys Thomas and family and the Jim Thomas family.

Velma moved to Pittsboro from Cary in 1959, and was a long time member of Hanks Chapel Christian Church, singing in the choir as well as teaching Sunday school. After her husband’s death, she relocated with her nephew, first to Wilmington, and then to Danville, VA.

The funeral service took place Friday, August 17 at 2 p.m. at Hanks Chapel Christian Church with service conducted by Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. William Rich. The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Building or Piano/Organ Funds at Hanks Chapel Christian Church, PO Box 366, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements for Mrs. Burns were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation, Pittsboro.

BRENDA GAYLE SUTTON WHITE
Brenda Gayle Sutton White, 72, died August 14, 2012 in her home following and extended illness.

Born November 3, 1939 in Alamance County, she was a daughter of Thomas Daniel Sutton and Lorine Pearl Joyner Sutton. Brenda was a graduate of Elon College, and was retired from teaching after 32 years of service, primarily in Chatham County. She was a member of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ.

Survivors include her mother, Lorine Joyner Sutton of Raleigh; housemate/ caregiver, Trish Mann of Pittsboro; daughter and son-in-law, Elisabeth “Lisa” Margaret Youngman and Johnny Feathers of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Emily Mai Youngman and Alex Jameson Youngman; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas Eugene Sutton and Brenda of Faith; sister, Barbara Falcone of Raleigh; niece, Paula F. Wilkins, her husband Thomas and son, Joel; and former son-in-law, James Youngman and wife, Debbie, of Chapel Hill.

The service to celebrate the life of Brenda White will be held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, August 18, 2012 at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
