Helen Page Spivey, 88, of Ramseur died Monday, (09-25-2006) at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing in Asheboro.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, (09-28-2006) at the First Baptist Church in Ramseur with Dr. Charles Fleshman and Rev. Justus McKeel officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

Mrs. Spivey was a native of Moore County, retired from Burlington Industries and a member of First Baptist Church in Ramseur.

Survivors include sons, Noel Spivey of Florence, S.C., Rev. Kenneth Spivey of Pikeville, Hampton “Happy” L. Spivey of Ramseur, James (Jimmy) Spivey of Asheboro, Bryan W. Spivey of Julian, Greg D. Spivey of Walterboro, S.C., Rev. George D. Spivey of Greenville, S.C.; brother, Henry Page of Fayetteville; 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

MRS. GEVENA ALSTON SCOTTON

Mrs. Gevena Alston Scotton of Siler City died Tuesday, (09-26-2006) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, (09-29-2006) at Harris Grove Baptist Church, Siler City.

Mrs. Scotton was a former employee of Stain Glass Resthome.

Survivors are children: Clyde Scotton, Jr., Wendy S. Dunlap, Jessie Alston, Thelma Fergerson, Jenny Lynn Alston, Lucille Brooks; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

EDITH GARREN PACE
Edith Garren Pace, 88, of Asheboro died Wednesday, (09-27-2006) at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside services and burial were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (09-30-2006) at South Fork Friends Meeting Cemetery in Snow Camp.

Mrs. Pace was a native of Randolph County and a member of South Fork Friends Meeting. She was retired from Lindley Nursing Home in Snow Camp.

Survivors include sisters, Eula Garren Rush of Asheboro, Marie Gillette of Creedmore; and brother, Lester Gearren of Asheboro.

JAMES BARRETT POYTHRESS

Mr. James Barrett Poythress, 85, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (10-01-2006) at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living in Pittsboro.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (10-03-2006) at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Lee Edwards officiating. Interment followed in Mann’s Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Poythress was a native of Durham County, and retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he worked in the physical education department.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Coleen P. Brewer of Pittsboro.

JAMES CALVIN DAVIDSON

James Calvin Davidson, 7, of Sanford died Thursday, (09-28-2006) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Arrangements are incomplete at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford.

CHARLES WADE PHILLIPS, SR.

Charles Wade Phillips, Sr., 73, of Bear Creek, died Saturday, (09-30-2006) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (10-03-2006) at Gulf Presbyterian Church with Rev. Cecil Callis, Rev. Wyatt Colley and Betty Sherrod officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Phillips was a native of Chatham County, and retired from NAPA of Goldston. He was an Air Force veteran of WW II and a member of Gulf Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Hardister Phillips of Bear Creek; son, Charles W. Phillips, Jr. of Loris, S.C.; daughters, Vicki Phillips, Pat Phillips, Jenny Phillips, all of Sanford; brother, Wayne Phillips of Cameron; sister, Rosella P. Spivey of Bear Creek; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; step-daughter, Teresa E. Wood of Siler City; step-sons, Johnny Elkins of Bear Creek, Wesley Elkins of Fuquay-Varina; seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of UNC, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312; or to Gulf Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 60, Gulf, N.C. 27256.

WESLEY LAVAR ALSTON, SR.

Mr. Wesley Lavar Alston, Sr., 63, of Siler City died Saturday, (09-30-2006) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday (10-04-2006) at Unity Powerhouse Church in Siler City. Burial followed at Mitchell Chapel Church Cemetery in Pittsboro.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Alston of Pittsboro; daughters, Gwendolyn Lynette Williams of Broadnax, Va., Jessica Moore of Siler City; sons, David Anthony Alston of Durham, Wesley Lavar Alston of the home; step-daughter, Marsha Baldwin Carver of Pittsboro; and a stepson, Eric Alston of Durham.

THURL T. PRICE
Thurl T. Price, 72, of Siler City died Monday, (09-25-2006) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, (09-28-2006) at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Allen Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Price was a native of Chatham County, a retired employee of New York Telephone Company, and a member of Gees Grove Church.

Survivors include his wife, Denise A. Price of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters, Louise Brodie, Evelyn Siler, Blondean Jordan, Rev. Helen Glover, all of Siler City; and brother, Jawade Price of the home.

SADIE ELIZABETH "LIBBY" DAURITY MESSER

Sadie Elizabeth "Libby" Daurity Messer, 62, formerly of Pittsboro, died Sunday, October 1, 2006, with her daughters at her side.

There will be a celebration of life at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Chatham County Senior Center in Pittsboro.

Ms. Messer was the daughter of the late Guy and Pearl Daurity.

She is survived by her daughters, Krystal Stocks of Holly Springs, Melissa Messer of Fuquay-Varina, and a very special grandson, Gabriel Nicholas, also of Fuquay-Varina; and brother, Billy Joe Daurity and wife, Babe of Concord.

Condolences may be sent to 1720 Stroll Circle, Fuquay-Varina, N.C. 27526.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the American Heart Association in Libby's honor.

BOYD MATTHEW "SLEEPY" MARLEY

Mr. Boyd Matthew "Sleepy" Marley, 88, of Staley, departed from this life Monday, October 2, 2006 at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2006 at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty. Burial will follow in Staley Cemetery.

Born March 4, 1918, in Randolph County, to the late Jesse and Bertha Langley, "Sleepy" was of the Methodist faith. He was owner and operator of Marley Auction Service for 41 years. He was a long-time Blue Grass fiddler and received a Life-time Achievement Award from the Rand Old Opry and Fiddler's Cove. He played with early North Carolina Blue Grass bands, including the Chatham Ranch Boys and played central North Carolina performances with Charlie and Bill Monroe.

He is survived by his sons, Larry Marley and his wife Helen of Asheboro, Timothy Matthew Marley of Staley; sister, Bonnie Ellison of Burlington; and brother, Fred Marley of Staley.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty.

JOHN ARLIE SMITH

Mr. John Arlie Smith, 92, of 5901 Jabo Hussey Road, Robbins, died Saturday, September 30, 2006 at his home.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2006, at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Melvin Williams and Phillip Smith officiating.

Mr. Smith was a Chatham County native, retired rest home operator, and a poultry farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Wilma Kidd and sons, Wilbert Arlie Smith and Jesse Burns Smith.

Survivors include daughters, Bettie Murray of Siler City, Ruth Powers of Bennett, Clara Hussey of Robbins, Carol Hicks of Staley, Julia (Judy) Maness of Bear Creek; sons, Clarence Lee (Bill) Smith of Robbins, Johnny A. Smith of Carthage, Jimmy Joe Smith of Cameron, Ronald Evans Smith of Robbins; sister, Inez Kidd of Staley; 32 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials should be directed to Tyson's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery c/o Mr. Lynn Crissman, 110 Carl Scott Road, Bear Creek, N.C. 27207.

DAISY ROBENA JOHNSON MOORE

Daisy Robena Johnson Moore, age 85, died Monday, October 2, 2006, at Ocean Trails Nursing Home in Southport.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Sandy Branch Baptist Church with Reverend Val Chadwick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Family visitation at Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City on Wednesday evening, October 4, 2006 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p. m.

Mrs. Moore was formerly of Bear Creek, a homemaker and member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by husband Aster Moore and son Ray Moore.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Fran Moore of Greensboro; Danny and Ann Moore of Bear Creek; Eugene and Ruby Moore of Siler City; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jerry Williamson of Southport; daughters, Camella Moore and DeLora Moore of Bear Creek, Sharon Tuck of Boiling Springs Lake; grandchildren, Duane Williamson, Darrell Williamson, Heather Williamson Whitworth, Rhonda Oates, Tammy Ashworth, Dan Moore, Jeff Moore, Chad Moore, Monica Moore Purvis, Nicole Moore, Brian Tuck, Jason Tuck, Jeremy Tuck, Charlie Moore, 17 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; sisters Leola Christopher of Greensboro, Elizabeth Gibson of Kempner, Texas; sister-in-law, Era Mae Johnson of Greensboro; and brother-in-law, Bill Costner of Julian.

MRS. RUBY REBECCA TRIPP OLDHAM

Mrs. Ruby Rebecca Tripp Oldham, 75, of Martinez, GA., former resident of Pittsboro, died Sunday, September 17, 2006.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, (09-23-2006) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Pittsboro, with Pastor Lee Harris officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Oldham was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker, and worked at Belks and UNC at Chapel Hill.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Scott of Evans, GA; sisters, Allene Campbell of Chapel Hill, Clarene Campbell of Sanford, Helen Brasington of Pittsboro; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

JACOB DANIEL COTTEN
Mr. Jacob Daniel Cotten, 20, of Snow Camp died Wednesday, (09-20-2006) at his home.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, (09-24-2006) at Hank’s chapel United Church of Christ in Pittsboro, with Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Cotten was a native of Lee County.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Janet and Craig Perry of Snow Camp; his father and step-mother, Wayne and Kathy Cotten of Pittsboro; sister, Taylor Cotten; brother, John Cotten, both of Moncure; grandparents, Gladys Thomas of Pittsboro, Eileen Cotten of Moncure, Wayne and Peggy Cotten of Pittsboro.

Memorials may be directed to either the Snow Camp Fire Department, 8416 Snow Camp Road, Snow Camp, N.C. 27349; or to the Chatham County Animal Shelter, 725 County Landfill Road, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.
