Sylvania Elizabeth Burke, 76, of Durham, died Friday, (09-22-2006) at Forrest View Rehabilitation Center.
Graveside services and burial were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, (09-24-2006) at Rocky River Friends Cemetery, Siler City, with Rev. David Hobson officiating.
Miss Burke was a native of Chatham County.
Surviving is a sister, Ruth Burke Crabtree of Chapel Hill.
NANCY LITTLE MASHBURN
Nancy Little Mashburn, 55, or Bear Creek died Wednesday, (09-20-2006) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (09-23-2006) at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Goldston, with Rev. Giles Saunders officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Mashburn was a native of Alamance County, a homemaker, and attended Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Mashburn of Bear Creek; son, David Mashburn of Goldston; daughter, Kim Beck of Bear Creek; mother, Lucille Little, Whitsett; brothers, Junior Little of Burlington, James Little, Rick Little, both of Whitsett; and three grandchildren.
JAMES STEPHEN (STEVE) JOHNSON
James Stephen (Steve) Johnson, 59, of Pittsboro died Monday, (09-25-2006) at VA Medical Center, in Durham.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (10-01-2006) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City, with Pastor Josh Conrad, officiating.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie J. Reneau of Pittsboro; mother, Margaret Peoples Johnson of Sanford; brother, Richard G. Johnson, of Sanford; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held immediately after the service on Sunday, (10-01-2006) at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.
THURL PRICE
Thurl Price, of Siler City, died Monday, (09-25-2006) at Chatham Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Farrar Funeral Home.
ELDER E. J. ALSTON
Elder E. J. Alston, 95, of Siler City died Sunday, (09-24-2006) at Chatham Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, (09-30-2006) at Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, with Dr. J. C. White, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Elder Alston was a native of Chatham County and a member of Evans Chapel Church. He was pastor of many churches including Belmont in Pittsboro, St. Matthews, Glovers Grove, Thompson Chapel, Mt. View, New England, Mountain Grove, and Bethel of Spring Lake.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Yon of the home, Lottie Kendall, Washington, D.C.; sons, Ervin Alston, David Alston, both of Siler City, Efford Alston, Jr. of Durham; sister, Ethel Johnson of Siler City; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Friday (09-20-2006) at the church.
JONATHAN JULIAN TEAGUE
Jonathan Julian Teague, age 6, of 400 Fall Creek Church Road, Bennett, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at 4 p.m. at Fall Creek Baptist Church where he attended. Rev. Bob Gels-thorpe and Rev. Wade Craven officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jonathan was born in Moore County and was a First Grader at Bennett Elementary School.
Survivors: parents, Maurice and Christina Brady Teague of the home; sister, Michelle K. Teague of the home; grandparents, Michael and Lois Brady, Julian and Jane Teague, all of Bennett; great-grandparents, Georgia Dunn and Rollin Norton of Troy and Myrtle Teague of Bennett.
Visitation was held Monday evening 6-9 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in memory of Jonathan to Children’s Cancer Fund, Brenner Children’s Hospital at WFUBMC, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
MARY HAYES FRAZIER
Mary Hayes Frazier, 77, of 2083 Stockyard Road, Staley died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Universal Healthcare, Ramseur.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City, with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial followed in Moon's Chapel Baptist Cemetery.
Mrs. Frazier was a native of Chatham County, a member of Moon's Chapel Baptist Church, and retired from Glendale Hosiery.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol F. Hogan and husband Mitchell of Asheboro; sons, Frank Frazier and wife Tammy, Calvin Frazier and wife Carolyn, Jeff Frazier and wife Connie, all of Staley; grandchildren, Sandy Thomas and husband Danny of Seven Lakes, Cathy Jo Stanley and husband Eric of Fox Fire, Michael Frazier, Keith Frazier, both of Staley, Renee Thompson and husband Carl of Lexington, Chris Frazier and wife Ashleigh of Wilmington, Travis Frazier, Jenna Marie Frazier, both of Staley, and three great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM ROYALL "BUDDY" ADKINS
William R. Adkins of 906 Coharie Drive, Clinton, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Wake Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pat. S. Adkins of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Carol Adkins of Liberty Township, Ohio; a sister, Virginia A. Hutchinson of Madison Heights, Virginia; and was the proud grandfather of Megan and Michael Adkins of Ohio.
Mr. Adkins was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board. He made Clinton his home since 1968 and before his retirement in 1990 was county executive of First Union National Bank. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and the Louisiana State University School of Banking.
For many years he was chairman of the Sampson County Industrial Development Board, member of the Clinton 100 Committee, board member of the Sampson Community College Foundation, and long standing member of the Clinton Rotary Club.
A memorial service was held on Monday, September 25, 2006 at 5 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton. An inurnment will take place at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Sampson Community College Foundation, 1801 Sunset Avenue, Clinton, N.C. 28328.
JACK (SPECK) SIMPSON
Mr. Horace Jack (Speck) Simpson, age 75 of 136 Miller Avenue SW, Concord died Friday, September 22, 2006 at Northeast Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 24, 2006 at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Posey officiating. Burial followed at Coldwater Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Simpson was born July 25, 1931 in Cabarrus County to the late Horace J. and Bernice Coan Simpson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ella (Dolly) Long and a brother, Don Simpson.
He was a member of Coldwater Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy "Dot" Long Simpson; a daughter, Mrs. Sharon S. Smith and husband Mickey of Siler City; sister, JoAnne S. Lynch and husband David of Concord; and a brother, Richard Simpson and wife Patricia of Lynnhaven, FL.

JOHN WARREN LOTHROP
John Warren Lothrop left this world on Sunday, September 24, 2006. He was 82 years old. Mr. Lothrop was born in Boston, Mass, as he liked to say “ in the upstairs front bedroom of my Grandmother’s house in the shadow of the State House.”
His father, Samuel Kirkland Lothrop, was an anthropologist and archeologist affiliated with the Peabody Museum. His mother, Rachel, was the beautiful young girl in the John Singer Sargent painting “Mrs. Warren and her daughter” now at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston.
Mr. Lothrop was a graduate of Millbrook School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent his entire career as a mechanical engineer at a Research and Development company near Boston and retired as Senior Project Engineer on a laser research project for the US Navy.
After his retirement Mr. Lothrop returned to his boyhood passion for sailing. In the 1980’s and 1990’s his Tartan 30 “Flight” was “the boat to beat” in the Marblehead - Mass Bay area. He won the New England Championship twice and was Boat of the Year winner twice.
Mr. Lothrop spent his last two years near Pittsboro NC. He is survived by his brother, Samuel K. Lothrop, Jr; two daughters, Gretchen and Deborah; and grandchildren Samuel and Blossom.
Mr. Lothrop’s ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony.
MRS. FLORINE ALSTON CHEEK
Mrs. Florine Alston Cheek, 57, of Asheboro died Monday, (09-11-2006) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
Funeral services are being held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, (09-14-2006) at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel in Siler City. Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil Monroe Cheek, Sr.; daughter, Shaniel Taylor; sons, Cecil Monroe Cheek, Jr., Douglas Eugene Cheek; mother, Eula Mae Alston; sisters, Mamie Mason, Dorothy Alston, Cindy Jo Alston, Fatima Alston, Corine Taylor; brothers, Donald Alston, Sr., Colon Alston, Jr., and James Foxx; and six grandchildren.
THOMAS WOODROW STERLING
Thomas Woodrow Sterling, 61, of Bear Creek died Wednesday, (09-13-2006) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday (09-16-2006) at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating.
Mr. Sterling was a native of Chatham County and served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne, U. S. Army. He was a lifeguard in Delray Beach, FL for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Harris Sterling; son, Kerry Petty of Sophia; daughter, Natasha Sterling of Harwinton, CT.; mother, Dorothy Hancock Martindale of Bear Creek; brother, Donnie Hancock of Burlington; sisters, Diana Hornsby of Camden S.C., Judith Nall of Bear Creek; and one granddaughter.
EDITH MAE COX
Edith Mae Cox, 80, of Moncure died at her home Saturday, (09-16-2006).
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Moncure Baptist church with Rev. Matt Garrett, Rev. Mike Clements and Rev. John Howard officiating. Burial was private.
Mrs. Cox was a native of Pitt County and a member of Moncure Baptist Church. She was a registered nurse with Central Carolina Hospital and had been with Mathiesin Clinic in Pittsboro for many years.
Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Cox of Chapel Hill; a son, Ronald P. Cox of Raleigh; brothers, Linwood Briley of Bethel, James Briley of Odgen, Utah; and thirteen grandchildren.
