ROBERT (BOB) ELWIN HARGROVE

Robert (Bob) Hargrove, 78, of Siler City died Tuesday, (06-27-2006) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, (06-30-2006) at Plainfield Friends Meeting, with Will Carter officiating. Burial followed in the meeting’s cemetery.

Mr. Hargrove was a native of Chatham County, a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting and was a self-employed mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Maness Hargrove of the home; son, Lynn Hargrove of Greensboro; sisters, Frances Phillips, Nancy Wilkie, Peggy Moody, all of Siler City, Madge Braxton of Graham; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Plainfield Friends Meeting, Cemetery Fund, 1956 Plainfield Church Road, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

MRS. GLORIA FAY BRICE

Mrs. Gloria "Faye" Brice, 688, of Rockingham, died Wednesday, (06-28-2006), at her residence.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, (07-01-2006) at Cobb Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Bohannon and Rev. Alex Perakis officiating. Burial followed in Richmond Memorial Park.

Mrs. Brice was a native of Richmond County, retired from Little Kingdom, and was a member of Cobb Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, April B. Knight of Rockingham; sons, Wally Brice of Goldston, Phillip Brice of Hoffman; brother, Jerry Brigman of Rockingham; sisters, Phyllis McDonald, Vicki Grant, Sherri Guadalupe, Marlene Brigman, all of Rockingham; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MR. DEMPSEY MEARL MILLIKEN

Mr. Dempsey Mearl Milliken, 71, of Tar Heel Lane died Saturday, (07-01-2006) at his residence.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (07-05-2006) at Griffin Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Interment followed in Bynum Cemetery.

Dempsey held various occupations including serving in the United States Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Polly Blackwood Milliken; a son Teddy Milliken of Pittsboro; two daughters Kris Tilley of Durham, and Kim Mitchell of Pittsboro; two sisters, Ann Hobbs of Rougemont, and Ruby Rose of Ocean Isle; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

MR. H. PAIGE PERRY

H. Paige Perry, 84, of NC Highway 87 North, Pittsboro died Sunday, (07-02-2006) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (07-05-2006) at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Pittsboro with Rev. Ray Gooch and Rev. Claire Clyburn McKeown officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Perry served in the Army during World War II and retired after serving 30 years with the NC Department of Agriculture. He was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Dell Dark Perry of the home; daughter, Nancy Piatt of Bahama; two sons Kenneth Perry and Tommy Perry of Pittsboro; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church or to Pittsboro United Methodist Church.

NELLIE CARTER EASTRIDGE

Nellie Carter Eastridge, 66 of 234 W. Brower Ave. Apt. D2, Liberty died Saturday ( 07-01-2006) at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (07-04-2006) at Flint Ridge Church Cemetery with Rev. Wallace Mann officiating.

Survivors include his son, David Eastridge of Liberty; three daughters, Barbara Warren of Staley, Tammy Livingston, and Rosa Thompson both of Liberty; sisters, Mildred Karnes of Globe, AR and Lorena Wicker of Siler City; four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of UNC, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

MATTIE LOUIS FIELDS BROOKS

Mattie Louis Fields Brooks, 86, of 2365 Stanton Hill Road, Cameron, NC died Monday (07-03-2006).

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, (07-06-2006) at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Mark Gaskins officiating.

Mrs. Brooks was a native of Chatham County and was retired from A.J. Schneierson & Co. She was a lifetime member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church

Survivors include daughter, Peggy Brooks Branson of Cameron; two sons, Rodger Brooks of Greensboro, Leslie Brooks of Bear Creek; sister, Frances Fields Beal of Myrtle Beach, SC; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren..

Memorials may be made to Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 715 Sandy Branch Church Rd., Bear Creek, NC 27207.

JOSIE ELIZABETH “BESSIE” GIBSON MCGREGOR TURNAGE

Mrs. Josie Elizabeth “Bessie” McGregor Turnage, 101, of Laurinburg died Sunday, (06-18-2006) at the Edwin Morgan Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday (06-24-2006) at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Harold Salmon and Rev. Patricia Stone officiating. Burial followed in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Mrs. McGregor Turnage was a retired elementary teacher with over 40 years of teaching in the North Carolina school system. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church where she had once been active in the United Methodist Women and the Adult Sunday school class. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, David B. McGregor; step-daughter, Maria Turnage Thomas of Bennettsville, S.C.; brother, three sisters, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 181, Gibson, N.C. 28343; or to Hospice of Scotland County, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, N.C. 28353.

ELWOOD WHITAKER

Elwood Whitaker, 68 of Pittsboro died Sunday, (06-25-2006) at his home.

Graveside services and burial were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (06-27-2006), in Old Rock Springs Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Sanders officiating.

Mr. Whitaker was a native of Chatham County and a heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include his wife, Loris Beal Whitaker; daughters, Dottie Whitaker of Pittsboro, Anne Dunlap of Robbins; sons, Barry Whitaker of Siler City, Timothy Whitaker of Pittsboro; sister, Alice Elkins of Pittsboro; brothers, Charles Whitaker, Don Whitaker, both of Pittsboro; one grandchild and four step-grandchildren.

RUBY C. GARNER

Ruby Cox Garner, 79, of Franklinville, died Thursday, (06-22-2006) at Universal Healthcare in Ramseur.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday (06-24-2006) at Franklinville United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Dowling and Rev. D.B. Martin officiating. Burial followed in Concord United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Garner was a native of Randolph County and retired from Coltrane, Gavin, & Cox, Attorneys at Law, as a legal secretary. She was a former member of Concord United Methodist Church where she had served as secretary, treasurer, and Sunday school teacher. She was a current member of Franklinville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Boyce Garner of the home; and sister, Rebecca Cox Picket of Asheboro;

ANNA MARGARET MEDLIN WALSTON

Mrs. Anna Margaret Medlin Walston, 82 of Moncure died Monday, (06-26-2006) at her residence.

Funeral services are being held at 11 a.m. Thursday, (06-29-2006) at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford, with Rev. Mike Oldham and Rev. Herbert Russell officiating. Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery in Asheboro.

Mrs. Walston was a native of Moore County.

Survivors include sons, James Lee Walston of Broadway, Edward Lee Walston of Vass, Jackie Bruce Walston of Goldsboro; daughters, Peggy Arnette of Sanford, Becky Dodson of Moncure; sister, Mary Fannie Zooleck of New Britain, Connecticut; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, (06-28-2006) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 110 Fields Drive, Suite B, Sanford, N.C. 27330.

MASTER QUINCY D. GILMORE

Master Quincy D. Gilmore, 7, of Siler City died Sunday, (05-21-2006) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (05-27-2006) at Jordan - Matthews High School. Burial followed in Evans Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery.

Survivors include parents, Ronnie Alvon Gilmore and Doris Burnette Gilmore of the home; brothers, Quentin Devon Gilmore of the home, and Maurice Andrews of Carthage.

GENEVEE BENNETT HAYDEN

Mrs. Genevee Bennett Hayden, 78 of Greensboro passed away Wednesday, (05-24-2006) at Beverly Health Care.

Graveside services were held Saturday, (05-27-2006) at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery, with Rev. Mark Strickland.

Mrs. Hayden was a native of Davidson County, a former resident of Bennett and weaver for Klopman Mills. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Survivors include daughters, Faye Hayden of Greensboro, Susan Wall of Lexington, Deborah Hayden of Concord, Sherri Hayden of Charlotte; sons, Albert O. King of Augusta, Ga., Robert L. Hayden of Siler City, Phillip L. Hayden of Lynchburg, Va.; brothers, David Bennett, Milas Bennett, both of Thompson, Ga., Albert Bennett of Franklinton; sister, Barbara Hailey of South Boston, Va.; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Pleasant Grove Christian Church, 5946 Pleasant Grove Church Road, Bennett, N.C. 27208.

KENNETH WAYNE CARLTON

Kenneth Wayne Carlton, 39, of Elizabethtown died Thursday, (05-25-2006).

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, (05-28-2006) at Meroney Church Cemetery, Siler City.

CURTIS VAN BRAFFORD

Curtis Van Roberson Brafford, 88, of Pittsboro died Saturday, (05-27-2006) at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (05-30-2006) at the First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Kevin Stumbo and Rev. Tommy Smith officiating. Burial followed at Loves Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brafford was a native of Chatham County, former resident of Siler City, and retired from the Kellwood Company. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church and the Ladies Bible Class.

Survivors include sons, Eugene Brafford of Pine Bluff, Willie Brafford, Wayne Brafford, both of Lexington; daughters, Margie B. Johnson of Sanford, Irene B. Morris, Virginia B. Morris, both of Pittsboro, Alma B. Stevens of Aberdeen, Kathy B. Clark of Bear Creek; sisters, Ruth R. Clark of Pittsboro, Myrna R. Way of Sanford; 25 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
