MARTIN LINUEL EFIRD

Martin Linuel Efird, 64, of Siler City died Thursday, (03-09-2006) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, (03-12-2006) at Brush Creek Baptist Church in Bear Creek with Rev. Patrick Fuller, Rev. Ed Lowder, and Rev. Gerald Bridges, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Randolph Honor Guard.

Mr. Efird was a native of Chatham County, a U. S. Air Force Veteran of Vietnam, a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher of the Men’s Class, was chairman of the deacons, and a member of the adult choir. He was co-owner of Beane and Efird Printers, Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gilbert Efird of Siler City; sisters, Anna E. Wray of Greensboro, Moree E. Poe of Siler City, Donna E. Elmore of Greensboro, Sandra E. Allen of Long View, Tx., and Betty E. Johnson of Cary.

Memorials may be made to Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Judy Lane, 45 John Lane Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207; or the American Cancer Society, West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 S. Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

CHARLES BERNICE GEE

Charles Bernice Gee, 74, of Asheboro died Friday (03-10-2006) at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, (03-13-2006) at Brush Creek Baptist Church in Bear Creek with Rev. Patrick Fuller and Rev. Charlie Carter officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gee, formerly of Siler City, was a native of Randolph County, a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church and an Army veteran. He retired after 20 years as a project manager from J. H. Allen.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Hancock Gee of the home; son, W. Henry Gee; daughter, Dottie Gee Walden; brother, James Mack Gee, all of Siler City; sister, Treva Gee Patterson of Raleigh; stepson, Doug Hancock of Apex; step-daughter, Kecia Serwin of Cary; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one step-grandchild.

RAY CLEVELAND “CUB” GORDON

Ray Cleveland “Cub” Gordon, 62, of Bennett, died Sunday, (03-12-2006) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (03-14-2006) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gordon was a native of Forsyth County and retired from Townsends, Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Cox Gordon of the home; daughter, Tammy Smith Macon of Bennett; brothers, Tom Gordon of Bonlee, Roger Gordon, Jimmy Gordon, Monroe Gordon, Joe Gordon, all of Bear Creek; sisters, Lena Gordon, Nancy Roe, both of Bear Creek; and two grandchildren.

CLYDE MONROE HEADEN

Clyde Monroe Headen, 87, of Siler City died Sunday, (03-12-2006) at Chatham Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (03-15-2006) at Chatham Memorial Park, with Rev. David Bowden officiating.

Mr. Headen was a native of Chatham County and retired from the Boling Chair Company. He was a member of the Siler City Mason Lodge #403 AF&AM, and an Army veteran of WW II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Headen; son, Robert Headen; and sister, Mildred H. Lemons, all of Siler City.

FLOYD D. MURRAY

Floyd D. Murray, 69, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (03-05-2006) at Laurels of Chatham.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (03-10-2006) at Liberty Chapel Church, Inc. with Pastor Norma Bryant officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Murray was a Chatham County native, attended Haywood School and Horton High School. He was a member of Liberty Chapel Church, Inc.

Survivors include a daughter, LaVern Burnette of Moncure; son, Raiford Smith of Siler City; five grandchildren; brothers, Bobby L. Murray, Jerry L. Murray, New Hill, Floyd Crump; sisters, Vivian Crump, Bettie Watson, Virginia Crump of Moncure, Shirley Harris of New Hill, and Bettina Boyorn of Moncure.

LOUISE PAIGE MOFFITT

Mrs. Louise Paige Moffitt, 88, of Siler City, died Friday, (03-10-2006) at the Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, (03-17-2006) at the First Baptist Church, Siler City with Rev. Barry R. Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Lambert Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Moffitt was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess and nursery aide. She was a nurse, employed with Chatham Hospital for many years, a member of the Round Dozen Club and the Dogwood Club.

Survivors include a son, Earle Paige of the home; sisters, Mrs. Mattie P. Lyles of Greensboro, Mrs. Aliene P. Peterson of Philadelphia, Pa.; half-sisters, Mrs. Mary Alston of Pittsboro, Mrs. Betsy Green of Sanford, Miss Lois Paige of Detroit, MI.; half-brother, Mr. Bobby Paige of Pittsboro; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

VANESSA GLADYS ALSTON

Vanessa Gladys Alston, 35, of Siler City died Saturday, February 25, 2006.

Funeral services were held at St. Julia Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006 with Rev. Joe Madden OFM, Conv., and Rev. Joseph Vetter officiating. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Park

Vanessa was born April 22, 1970 in Siler City and was a member of St. Julia Catholic Church and Queen of Apostle in Alexandria, Virginia.

At the age of 17, she was diagnosed and treated for Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) through perseverance and determination, in 1988 she graduated from Jordan-Matthews High School in Siler City. She continued her education by receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Appalachian State University in Boone and received her Master’s Degree in social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Vanessa’s first job was with the Department of Defense in Memphis, TN, where she held a position as a social worker. She continued developing her career by working with the Department of Justice as a Program Specialist in Washington, D.C.

Some of Vanessa’s many outstanding achievements were senior class president, homecoming queen (twice), Mrs. Jordan Matthews, recognition in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, her outstanding contributions to the mission and goals of the Office of Justice Programs, receiving the Assistant Attorney General’s Award in December, 2002, receiving an award for outstanding services from the Office for Victim’s Crime and Defense Logistics Agency, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Having over 22 surgeries and exhausting all treatment alternatives, Vanessa was received by her Lord at 6:13 a.m. on February 25, 2006. Through her trials and tribulations she displayed a courageous attitude, which only having favor from God allowed her to endure.

Her life was tremendously exemplified through a message, “Don’t Quit, Live on Hope and Reach your Goals in Life”, which she delivered at her High School graduation. Although she will be sorely missed by all, her legacy of faith, courage, hope, love and determination will live in us forever.

Vanessa leaves behind a loving mother, best friend and companion, Theresa Fontenot Alston; a loving father, best friend and mentor, Leon Alston, Sr.; a loving brother and confidant, Leon Alston, Jr. (Linda, a loving sister-in-law); two adorable nephews whom she cherished as her own, Adrian and Steven Alston; two special friends, John Ceaser and Cheryl Hill; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

EARL B. FITTS

Earl B. Fitts, 77, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006 at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. James Wall and Rev. Brian Reynolds. Burial was in Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek.

Pallbearers were all of Earl’s nephews that served as follows: William R. Fitts, III, Johnnie Fitts, Jim Fitts, Tom Fitts, Greg Dixon, Doug Dixon, Alan Hargis and Tom Carson.

Earl was a native of Chatham County, a life-long member of the First Baptist Church where he was a deacon, former Sunday School teacher and served on many committees.

He was an Industrial accountant for A.J. Schneierson and Sons, owner of Earl B. Fitts & Co., Fitts Realty and Insurance.

Earl was first elected to the Siler City Town Board of Commissioners in May, 1963, served continuously through November, 1977. He served 14 years as mayor Pro-Tem 1961-1975. He ran successfully for mayor in November 1981 and served as Mayor for 18 years through November 1999.

Earl Fitts served the town of Siler City as Mayor and member of the Siler City Town Board of Commissioners for thirty-two years with Dedication and Distinction. These years of service have been marked by exemplary and energetic leadership in the vital accomplishments of the town of Siler City.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Earl Fitts, his parents, W.R. Fitts, Sr. and Lillie Mae Marley Fitts also, one brother, the Rev. Russell Fitts.

Survivors include his wife Virginia Dixon Fitts of the home, daughters Sara Fitts of Manassas, Va., Sheila Fitts of Siler City; sister, Frances F. Rhodes and husband Larry of Gastonia; brothers, Pearl D. Fitts, W.R. Fitts, Jr. and wife Faye, all of Siler City; sister-in-law, Mary Fitts of Shelby.

At his retirement from City Hall, Earl was inducted into the order of the Long Leaf Pine. It is North Carolina’s most prestigious award for public service given with the blessings of Governor James B. Hunt.

“Here’s to the land of the long leaf pine, the summer land where the sun doth shine. Where the weak grow strong and the stong grow great. Here’s to down home, the Old North State.”

The Siler City Fire Department made Earl an honorary Fireman and presented him with his own helment.

MYRTLE BROWER DAVIS

Myrtle Brower Davis, 87, of 480 Davis Road, Siler City died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at SunBridge Care Facilities.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Loves Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Greg W. Burriss and Rev. David Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Davis was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and member of Loves Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, Robert A. Davis and wife, Lara of Siler City, Henry O. Davis and wife, Bonnie, of Siler City; daughter, Brenda D. Washburn and husband, Mac, of Smyrna; grandchildren, Sonya Wilson, Stacey Rhodes, Matthew Davis, Brent Davis; and special nephew, Ronald Brower and wife, Ruth of Liberty.

Memorials may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church, 14680 Hwy. 64 West, Siler City, NC 27344

PHILLIP RAYMOND PETTIT

Phillip Raymond Pettit, 21, of 566 Melvin Clark Road, Siler City died Monday, March 13, 2006 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006 at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, 10891 Siler City-Glendon Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Randy Hand and Dr. Walter YoHo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Pettit was a native of Lee County, a member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, a graduate of Chatham Central High School, was employed with Performance Fibers, Moncure and had been employed with GKN of Sanford. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cheryl Phillips Pettit.

Survivors include his father, John R. Pettit of Siler City; sister, Jennifer Leigh Pettit, of Siler City; maternal grandparents, Billy Joe and Edna Cook Phillips of Bear Creek; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Cameron Pettit of Siler City.

Visitation is scheduled at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home on Thursday, March 16, 2006 from 7 to 9 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the home of Raymond and Cameron Pettit, 484 Melvin Clark Road, Siler City.

JOSEPH “JODY” EARL BUNCH

Joseph “Jody” Earl Bunch, 53, of Goldston, died Saturday, (03-04-2006) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Surviving is one sister, Marie Biggerstaff of Goldston.

No services will be held.
