CHARLES L. SPIVEY

Charles L. Spivey, Sr., 73, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen Stamey Spivey of the home; sons, Chuck (Kim) of Siler City, Eddie (Jeannie) of Asheboro; and two granddaughters; siblings, David, Peggy, Faye, Janice, Linda and Nancy, all of Buncombe County. He was preceded in death by his parents, W. A. and Annie Pruett Spivey.

Charles was a loving husband, father and granddad. His family was the love of his life. He was a faithful member of the Pittsboro Church of the Nazarene, a U.S. Army veteran, and retired from Acme-McCrary in Asheboro,. After retirement, he enjoyed farming and traveling.

The family received friends Monday, October 3, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City, and other times, at the family home.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2011 in the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Ward officiating. Burial was held at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pittsboro Church of the Nazarene, PO Box 1313, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

BEN STROUD FOUST

Ben Stroud Foust of Siler City died Monday, October 3, 2011 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

Mr. Foust was born April 24, 1923, the son of Eugene Harris and Arabella (Stroud) Foust, Sr. He was a native of Chatham County and a member of Siler City Presbyterian Church. He was retired from Boling Chair Company where he was the chief financial officer. He was an avid golfer. Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy W. Foust; his parents; brothers, Jack and Charles Foust.

He is survived by one son, Michael Foust and wife, Donna of Siler City; sister, Sarah Smith of Siler City; brother, Eugene H. Foust, Jr. of Siler City; granddaughters, Tiffany Stephens and husband, Riley of Fayetteville, Nancy Foust of Siler City; great-granddaughter, Rylee Anne Stephens; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Wednesday, October 5, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 W. 3rd Street, Siler City with Rev. Sue Flippin and Rev. Garry Arnett officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Cemetery, Siler City.

Memorials may be made to Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 W. 3rd St., Siler City, NC 27344 or First Christian Church Living Christmas Tree Fund, 1381 Church Street, Ramseur, NC 27316.

CASEY LYNN ESTRIDGE

Casey Lynn Estridge, 27, of 137 Buttercup Drive, Bennett, passed away Monday, October 3, 2011.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Fall Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Drum and Rev. Ron Chaney officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Casey was a Chatham County native and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and also loved horses. Her greatest joy in life was her daughter, Kaylee, she loved being a mother.

Miss Estridge is survived by daughter, Kaylee Hall of Bennett; fiance’, Dustin Hall of Bennett; mother, Wanda Phillips Estridge of Bennett; father and step-mother, Tommy and Denise Estridge of Bennett; brothers, Chad Estridge, wife Alyson and their son Grady, all of Sanford, Dalton Estridge, Rose Maness and their daughter Nicole, all of Bennett; grandmother, Marie Phillips of Bennett; Kaylee’s grandmother, Cynthia Burke.

Casey was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, George “Chirpy” and Clara Estridge; maternal grandfather, Floyd Phillips and cousin, Jeremy Moses.

Visitation was held Wednesday, October 5, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, and other times at Tommy’s home, 1519 Winfred Brady Road, Bennett.

The family has asked that memorials be directed to a fund set up for Kaylee at First Bank in Bennett, Attn: Denise Estridge for Kaylee Hall.

REV. ROBERT EDWARD SHELTON

Rev. Robert Edward Shelton 52, of Graham, died Tuesday, (09-20-2011) at Alamance Regional Hospital in Burlington.

Funeral services were held Friday, (09-23-2011) at 11 a.m. at Smyrna United Methodist Church in Robbins, with Rev. James W. Caviness, Jr., Rev. James Wooten, Rev. William Gattis, and Rev. Tal Madison officiating. There was a Worship Service of Remembrance in the 11 a.m. service Sunday, (09-25-2011) at Mt. Hermon U.M.C., led by Rev. William Gattis.

Mr. Shelton was born in High Point, January 18, 1959 to James Shelton and Patricia Stevenson. Robert was a grad-uate of UNC in Greensboro and received a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School. An ordained elder in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, he was in his 17th year of ministry in NC. He served the Franklinville-Rehobeth Charge in Franklinville and Ramseur; Asbury U.M.C. in Washington; Smith U.M.C. in Roanoke Rapids; and was currently the pastor of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church in Graham.

Survivors include his wife, Janna Caviness Shelton of the home; daughters, Crystol of Copley, OH, Anna of the home; sons, Wesley and Luke, of the home; mother and step-father, Patricia and John Stevenson of West Jefferson, OH; father and step-mother, James and Sandi Shelton of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; brother, Bryan of Columbus, OH; and step-brother, Shawn of Plain City, OH. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl and Ann Shelton, Freeman and Dot Hill and brother, Eric Douglas Shelton.

VERNIE ROBERT DEATON

Vernie Robert Deaton, 90, of Seagrove died Tuesday (09-20-2011) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday (09-22-2011) at 2 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett with Rev. Russell Chrisco officiating. Burial followed in Randolph Memorial Park.

Mr. Deaton was a Randolph County native and a retired farmer. He attended Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Gatlin Deaton of the home; son, Bobby Steve Deaton of Seagrove; daughters, Maxine Ayers of Wilmington, Betty Gray of Asheboro; sisters, Sula Phillips of Randleman, Mamie Dunn, Kathleen Macon, both of Seagrove; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

LELAND “Lee” LYMAN PIERCE

Leland Lyman Pierce, 83, of Siler City died Wednesday, (09-14-2011) at his residence.

The funeral mass was held Wednesday, (09-28-2011) at 3 p.m. at St. Julia Catholic Parish with Father Jim Fukes officiating.

Mr. Pierce was born June 23, 1928 in Corning, NY, the son of Leo Ernest and Alva Mae (Shutler) Pierce. He was of the Protestant faith, a native of Steuben County, NY, an Army Veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the military, he worked for Steuben County in road maintenance and later at Jordan Lake. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann Thompson Pierce and a sister, Betty Hankinson.

Survivors include daughters, Belinda Hunters of Phoenix, AZ, Jenny Adams of Siler City; step-sons, Timothy Lee Irwin of Caledonia, MN, Mark Daniel Irwin of Lillington, Michael David Irwin of Nashville, TN; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (09-28-2011) at the family home, 214 Albert Hargrove Road, Siler City, following the service.

Memorials may be made to West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, 27344.

DEAN THURMAN BURGESS

Dean Thurman Burgess, 80, of Staley, died Friday, (09-23-2011) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, (09-25-2011) at Shady Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Horton and Rev. Talmadge Williams officiating. Entombment followed in the church cemetery

Mr. Burgess was a native of Shawnee, Oklahoma and a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He retired from Freeman Ford in Liberty and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Thurman and Ollie Williams Burgess, brothers, Paul Burgess, Clyde Burgess, James Burgess, and sisters, Ruth Novack and Lois Caudle.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Edwards Burgess, of the home; sons, Phillip Merrell Burgess, Eddie Dean Burgess, both of Staley; one grandchild, three step-grand-daughters, and eight step-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to, Shady Grove Baptist Church Building Fund c/o of Ava Atkins, 7086 Old Staley Rd., Staley, NC 27355.

BETTY LOU HART ATKINS

Betty Lou Hart Atkins, 78, of Gulf died Sunday, (09-25-2011) at her residence.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, (09-29-2011) at 1 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Derrick Baker officiating.

Mrs. Atkins was born February 10, 1933, the daughter of William Murdock and Vida Mae (Cotton) Hart. She was a native of Chatham County, retired from Glendale Hosiery, and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Betty Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Daley Atkins; her parents; sister, Ola H. Vickery, Helen H. Foushee; brothers, Calvin and Raymond Hart.

Survivors include daughters, Lisa A. Funston, Lori A. Keifer, both of Gulf; sister: Linda Faye White of Raleigh; brother, Phil Hart of Gulf; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Bethany Baptist Church fellowship hall.

ALVIN MOORE SCOTT

Alvin Moore Scott, 80, of Greensboro died Monday (09-26-2011) at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at Pleasant Garden Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday (09-29-2011), with visitation at the church, one hour before the service. Graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Scott was born April 20, 1931 to John Daniel and Ruby Coleman Scott. He was a veteran, serving in the 508th Airborne Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was the owner and operator of Carolina Wildlife Damage Control, and a member of Pleasant Garden Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joyce Scott Pulliam.

Surviving is his wife, Peggy C. Scott; sons, Billy Daniel Scott, James David Scott; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

ROBERT S. (Bobby) BINKLEY, JR.

Robert S. (Bobby) Binkley, Jr. of Lake City, FL died Monday, (09-26-2011).

Funeral services will be held Friday, (09-30-2011) in Lake City.

He is survived by one son, Robbie Binkley of Owatonna, Minnesota; brothers, Ashley and Larry Binkley of Siler City, Wesley Binkley of Bear Creek, Joe Binkley of Asheboro, Steve Binkley of Graham, Odell Binkley of Burlington; sisters, Thelma Estes and Camilla Gilliland of Goldston, Betty Jean Lindley of Knightdale and Agnes Gilliland of Burlington.

ROBERT RONALD WHITE, SR.

Robert Ronald White, Sr, 87, of 160 SS Edwards Road, Siler City died Monday, September 26, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. White was born in Chatham County on July 20, 1924, the son of John Robert and Hazel (Adcock) White.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.

Robert served in WW II with the US Navy as a Boatsmate Second Class. He served on LST 345 in the North African Campaign on beachheads of Cecily, Italy and France. Robert received the Purple Heart while serving in the war.

Robert was a member and past President of Siler City Lions Club. He was a member and past President of the Siler City Wildlife Club and a member of 40-8 American Legion Honor Club. He was an avid horseman, enjoying trail rides at Uwharrie and belonging to the Old Timers Trail Riders in Uwharrie for over 40 years.

Robert was employed for 20 years by Chatham Wholesale Grocery as a salesman, later becoming co-owner and operator with his wife, Doris G. White of the Siler City Hardware Store until retiring in 1987. He attended the First United Methodist Church of Siler City.

Preceding Robert in death was his wife of 64 years, Doris Goode White. He is survived by two sons, Robert Ronald "Ronnie" White, Jr. and wife, Hilda of Siler City, David Stephen "Steve" White and wife, Jill of Lake Lure; grandchildren, Tiffany White Whitt and husband, Jamie, Erin White Carter and husband, Eric; great-grandchildren, Sawyer White, Cody Whitt, Tanner Whitt and Campbell Carter; brother, Edwin (Donald) White and wife, Carolyn of Oveido, Florida; close and beloved friends, Ben Jones, John Etchison and many, many more.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 East Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344; or the West Chatham Veteran's Club, c/o Sam Adams, P.O. Box 564, Siler City, NC 27344.
