EMILY EVELYN COLEY TYSON

Emily Evelyn Coley Tyson, 86, of Sanford died Thursday, (08-11-2011) at Central Carolina Hospital.

The funeral was held at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church, Saturday, (08-13-2011), at 4:30 p.m. with Rev. Houston Blair and Rev. Ed Heffington presiding. Burial followed in church cemetery.

Mrs. Tyson was born in Sampson County, February 16, 1925, to the late Nellie Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Tyson; sons, Eddie James Tyson, Harry Gene Tyson; brother, Woodrow Coley and sister, Christine Whitaker.

Surviving are a son Timothy Tyson of Jacksonville; daughter, Charlotte Tyson of Cary; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ERNESTINE KIDD DOWD

Ernestine Kidd Dowd died Thursday, (08-11-2011) at the Lee County Nursing Home in Sanford.

Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, (08-19-2011) at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Martha and Debbie.

Survivors include a son, James Dowd, Jr. of Sanford; daughter, Tina Cheek of Siler City; sister, Helen Faucett of Haw River; brother, Jimmy Kidd of Burlington; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by Chatham Memorial Park.

ELIZABETH SNIPES BURNETTE

Elizabeth Snipes Burnette, 47, of 813 Elkhart Drive, Raleigh, departed this life Tuesday, August 9, 2011.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Macedonia New Life Church, 2004 Rock Quarry Road.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy E. Burnette of the home; mother, Olivia Johnson Snipes of Lands-downe, PA; sisters, Regina Snipes of Drexel Hill, PA, Felicia Dixon of Durham, Theresa Staton of Philadelphia; brothers, Herbert Snipes of Allentown, PA, Stephen Snipes of Vanceboro, Herbert Staton of Philadelphia, PA, Gregory Staton of Hampton, VA, Christopher Snipes of Rocky Mount; and a host of other relatives and friends.

BILLY JOE DAVID

Billy Joe David, age 76, of 606 West Fourth Street, Siler City, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at his home.

Mr. David was born November 17, 1934 in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, the son of Joseph Henry and Flora Belle Bryan David. He lived in California before coming to North Carolina. He was at one time a beet farmer and also managed a Duck Club in Imperial County, CA. Bill was a former member of the Lions Club in California and former manager of the Garden Water, Inc. in Bakersville, CA. He was a lapidary. Bill was a partner in David & Son Plumbing, a scout leader, little league baseball coach, and a member of Faith Family Ministries in Siler City where he was president of the FCF, a leader in the Royal Rangers, and a Sunday School Bus Pastor. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Ruth Marie Wilder.

Survivors include his wife of 58½ years, Johnnie Hanks David; three sons, Dennis C. David and wife, Sara of Siler City, Kenneth W. David and wife Ladonna, of Bakersville, CA, Lynden C. David and wife Lorraine of Siler City; one brother, Jerry W. David of Imperial, CA; ten grandchildren, five great-grand-children; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Monday, August 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Faith Family Ministries, 225 Chatham Square, Siler City. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the church. with Pastor Ron Swails and Pastor Lowell Pocock officiating. Interment followed in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

DEBRA JO DETER

Debra Jo Deter of Mebane, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2011 at the age of 60.

She was the beloved sister of Jean (Bill) Janssen and Susan Barron; dear aunt to Michael Janssen, Megan Barron, Kirby Barron, Louisa Janssen and the dear daughter of the late Francis and Paul Deter and a treasured friend to many.

She was involved in various endeavors in the food industry, including her own Cottage Rose Tearoom. She was a wonderful chef, a doting mother to her menagerie of animals, and a colorful and inspiring presence to all.

FRANCES ANN SECKLER JESTES

Frances Ann Seckler Jester, 60, of Chapel Hill, went home to be with God on August 14, 2011 after a courageous fight with melanoma cancer at Beacon Place in Greensboro.

Born June 25, 1951 in Guilford County, Ann was the oldest of four daughters of William Francis Seckler and Grace Ann Seckler. She attended High Point City Schools and obtained an education degree from Appalachian State University. Ann began her career teaching middle school in Davidson County and then taught at Horton Middle School in Chatham County until her health declined. Teaching was one of Ann’s greatest passions and she was well loved by her co-workers and the many students whose lives she touched. She enjoyed gardening, antique shopping, dancing and her many cats.

Ann is survived by her husband, Roger Clinton Jestes of 27 years; her daughter, Rebekah Anne Jestes; her grandchildren, Michael Clinton Whitt, Anna Alexis Jestes and Alexander Lee Carroll, all of Chapel Hill. She is also survived by her parents, Bill and Grace Ann Secker of High Point; her three sisters, Susan Gordon (Ross) of Matthews, Kathy Weekly (Joe) of High Point and Julie Goff (Frank) of Gladys, VA, along with many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ann Seckler Jestes will be held at the Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, 396 West Street, Pittsboro, on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 3 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society and Greensboro Hospice, Beacon Place.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service, Pittsboro.

C. RAY JONES

C. Ray Jones, 80, of 56 W. Raleigh Street, Bennett, passed away Monday at his home.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday August 17, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Bennett Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Strider and John Wayne Phillips officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jones was a Chatham County native, born July 5, 1931 to the late Clina and Leona Phillips Jones. He was a fixer at Bossong Hoisery for 32 years. A member of Bennett Baptist Church, he was a former Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher. He loved sports, especially his favorite teams, the “Tarheels” and “Boston Red Sox”. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven Jones, a grandson, Christian Lee, and a great-grandson, Kelly Modery.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Honeycutt Jones of the home; daughter, Lou Ann Lee and husband Tom of Sanford; grandchildren, August Sutphin, Brennan Binkley and wife Edie, Robert Lee, Forrest Baringer-Jones; great-grand-children, Steven Sutphin, Mitchell Modery, Madeline Binkley; brothers, Wayne Jones and wife Lucille, Howard Jones and wife Betty Lou, Dwight Jones and wife Ruby, all of Bennett, Gary Jones and wife Donna of Asheboro; sister, Geneva Saunders of Ramseur; and one remaining uncle, Wilbert and wife Mildred Jones of Bennett.

Visitation was held Tuesday August 16, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, and other times at the home.

Memorials may be directed to Bennett Baptist Church Building Fund or Bennett Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 91, Bennett, NC 27208.

Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett is assisting the Jones family.

MILDRED A. “MILLIE” PHILLIPS-FEENEY

Millie Phillips-Feeney, 80, of Defiance OH, passed away Saturday, (08-06-2011), at The Laurels of Defiance Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home with Rev. Max Begley officiating. Entombment followed at Riverview Memory Gardens in Defiance, OH. An AMVETS Auxiliary memorial service was held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Phillips-Feeney was born May 3, 1931 in Bear Creek to Pearl and Mary Cleta (Smith) Davis. She worked at Zeller Corporation and retired from National Memorial Stone Company. She was an officer with the VFW Post 3360 Ladies Aux., the AMVETS Post 1991 Ladies Aux., a member of Eastern Star Chapter, and Eagles Aerie 372, all of Defiance, OH.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Eugene Phillips, Gerald Feeney, and two grandsons.

Survivors include children, Douglas Wayne Phillips of Antwerp, OH, Elane Smith, Shane Phillips, both of Defiance OH; 23 grand-children and 21 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Caring Way Hospice of Defiance.

TOMMY FOYICE GOLDSTON

Mr. Tommy Foyice Goldston, 70, of Siler City died Friday (08-05-2011) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Goldston was born July 20, 1941, the son of the late Benjamin F. and Mable Goldston. He was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church and was a graduate of Chatham High School. He had worked at Siler City Mills and Butler Furniture Company. In addition to this parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Edwards and brothers, Rufus and William Goldston.

Survivors include a brothers, Gene Goldston of Siler City; daughter, Nicole Rush of Sanford; son, Tommy F. Goldston II of Terra Haute, Indiana; and three grandchildren.

MITCHEL EUGENE “MITCH” MANN

Mr. Mitchel Eugene “Mitch” Mann, 54, of Chicken Bridge Road, Pittsboro, was surrounded by his loving family and friends when he died Thursday, August 4, 2011 in his home.

Mitch was born May 4, 1957 in Alamance County, the son of Lee Norris Mann and Elsie Bare Mann. He was raised and educated in Chatham County, graduating from Northwood High School. A graduate of Wake Tech, Mitch was a retired design engineer for Tyco Electronics.

Mitch was an active member of Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, and also in community. He enjoyed woodworking, building, riding his Harley and loved his faithful dog, Roxie. He was also a Mason, with membership in Columbus Lodge #102 in Pittsboro.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Howell Mann; son, Travis Mann, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Christie and Steve Morgan, of Raleigh; his sister, Melissa Mann, of Pittsboro; and his canine companion, Roxie. In addition to his parents, Mitch was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Lee Mann.

The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Mitch Mann was held at 3 o’clock Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Gooch presiding. Interment, with Masonic Rites, followed in the church cemetery. Friends visited with the family at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro from 5 – 8 p.m. Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Brown’s Chapel UMC Memorial Gift Fund, PO Box 1048, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

A special “thank you” is extended to all family and friends, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, and to the many wonderful caregivers that have been involved with Mitch’s care during his illness.

Arrangements for Mr. Mann were under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.
