John William Snider, age 69, of 1671 Giles Chapel Rd., Asheboro died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

Mr. Snider was a native of Randolph County, was a U.S. Navy veteran, and was retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery. He was a member of Giles Chapel United Methodist Church, providing many years of dedicated service to the church and cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene N. Snider, his sisters, Ruth Bradshaw, Dorothy White, and Gladys Routh, and his brother, Dalton Snider.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband Cathy Snider Kersey and Vance Kersey of Asheboro, NC; son Todd N. Snider of the home; granddaughter, Ashley Kersey of Asheboro, NC; grandson, Justin Kersey of Asheboro, NC; sisters Colleen Apple of Farmer, NC, Rachel Adams of Thomasville, NC and Nancy Snider of Waynesboro, VA; brothers Clyatt Snider, Jack Snider, Eugene Snider and Dewey Snider all of Denton, NC.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 15, 2004 from 7 - 9 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be held on Monday, August 16, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Giles Chapel United Methodist Church, 1627 Giles Chapel Rd., Asheboro with Rev. Michael W. Adams, Rev. Steve Wood, and Rev. Vincent Adams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LOUISE SCOTT HEGLER

Mrs. Louise Scott Hegler, 78, of Liberty Hill, S.C. died Friday, (06-10-2011) at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill, S.C.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (06-14-2011) at The Chapel of Hartley Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Mackey officiating. Burial followed in Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hegler was born in Chatham County, a daughter of the late Lonnie Scott and Nellie Dixon Scott. She was a homemaker and member of Thornhill Baptist Church in Kershaw. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank B. Hegler and son, Ronald E. Hegler.

Survivors include sons, Keith Hegler of Troutman, Kenneth Hegler of York, S.C., Rodney Hegler, Tracy Hegler, both of Liberty Hill, S.C.; brothers, Bob Scott, Bill Scott, Hoyt Scott, all of Bear Creek; sister, Dixie Scott Holt of Siler City; six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Rock Hill Chapter, 2115 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

VAUGHN BRAY

Mr. Vaughn Bray, 97, of Siler City Care and Rehabilitation, formerly of 105 Vaughn Bray Road, Bennett, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at the care center.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Todd Brown officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bray was a Chatham County native, the son of the late Claude and Lula Hicks Bray and retired from textiles. He attended Pleasant Grove Christian Church and was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife, Vellie Williamson Bray of the home; daughters, Marie B. Harper and husband J.C. of Bennett, Carol B. Lackey and husband Tony of Siler City; four sisters, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

The Bray family received friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials should be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1414 East Eleventh Street, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

EDDIE CARLTON BREWER

Eddie Carlton Brewer, 53, of 3814 Airport Road, Siler City died Thursday, June 9, 2011 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Brewer was born December 13, 1957, the son of Edward Carlton and Betty (Gordon) Brewer. He was a native of Chatham County, a maintenance worker with the Chatham County Schools and a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church. Eddie was a family orientated man who enjoyed going to the beach, wood working, gardening and ball games. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Carlton Brewer.
He is survived by his wife, Donna (Phillips) Brewer; one daughter, Dana Renee Brewer of Raleigh; mother, Betty Gordon Brewer; one sister, Cindy B. Bray and husband, Kenneth of Bennett; sister-in-law, June Price; brother-in-law, Burl Phillips, Jr. and wife, Kristy; nieces, Karen Phillips and husband, Gary, Marshall Phillips, Whitney Phillips; nephews, Justin Bray, Torris Price, Jr., Miller Phillips and Mason Phillips.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 4 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Dr. Al Martin and Rev. Greg Burriss officiating.

“ERNIE” GARRETT, JR.

Greensboro – Mr. Ernest “Ernie” Cebron Garrett, Jr., 60, a resident of the Forest Oaks Community died Sunday morning, June 12, 2011.

Ernie was born November 18, 1950, in Macon, GA, the son of Ernest Cebron Garrett, Sr. and Lillian Lucille Joiner Garrett. He was a member of the graduating class of 1968 at Ragsdale High School and a graduate of UNC at Greensboro. Before retiring, Ernie was the former owner of the Mid-State Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Dealership in Sanford and the former owner of Eldercare of Greensboro. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother, Velda Thompson Garrett.

On June 6, 1970, he was married to the former Wanda Stafford, who survives of the home. Surviving in addition to his wife is one daughter, Jessica G. Jackson and husband Matthew of Sanford; one son, Jason Brent Garrett and wife Monica of Barnesville, MD; one brother, William Michael Garrett of Longs, SC; and six grandchildren, Chase, Samuel, Julianna and Helena Garrett and Luke and Kate Jackson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 High Point Road, Greensboro, conducted by the Reverend Brent Thomas. Interment followed in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

GURNEY G. “BUCK” ASHBY

Sophia – On June 12, 2011, a golden heart stopped beating. Gurney G. “Buck” Ashby passed away with his loving family surrounding him at Randolph Hospice House.

Buck Ashby was born to the late Jessie James and Lora Mabe Ashby on October 3, 1927 in High Point, NC. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond and Stanley Ashby and infant brother Malcolm; two sisters, Dora Rook and Lillian Bullington; three sons, Larry, Barry, and Ray Ashby; great granddaughter Anistyn Babcock, who were all waiting on his arrival to heaven and we are sure it was a joyful reunion and he is at peace.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 30 years. He received many honors in the Navy and was respected by all that served under and above him. He went from white hat to Warrant Officer 3 though his years of service, which gave him a lot of pride in those accomplishments.On June 3, 1950, He was united in marriage to Shirley Geneva Fulk and from that union, he was graced with six children whom he was devoted to.

He enjoyed baseball and Nascar racing. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren where his greatest joy in life. He was always putting them first in everything he did. He will be greatly missed by all of them.

He is survived by his three loving daughters, Sherry Babcock and husband Don of Cape Girardeau, MO, Sonya Rice and husband Paul of Westminster, CA, and Robin Evans and husband Greg of Siler City; daughter-in-law, Delores Ashby of Greensboro; grandchildren, Lora and Travis Stalford, Diane Penna, Matthew and Roselle Ashby, Joshua and Crystal Ashby, Wesley Malone, Vanessa Babcock, Alaura Rice, Barry Ashby, Garrett Rice; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Colton Stalford, Andie and Sophia Penna, and Olivia Ashby.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16 in the Chapel of Cumby Family funeral service in Archdale with Pastor Derwin Tuten officiating. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park with full military honors. The family received friends Wednesday, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

GEORGE JUNIOR THRIFT

George Junior Thrift, 86, of Siler City died Tuesday, (05-31-2011) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

A graveside service was held Friday, (06-02-2011) at 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Keith Johnson officiating.

Mr. Thrift was born November 25, 1924, the son of George W. and Julia (Creed) Thrift. He was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of the N. C. Agriculture School, and a member of Bible Baptist Church. He was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific, retired from Hadley-Peoples and later worked with Central Carolina Farmers Exchange and Ace Hardware. He was preceded in death by a son, Arliss E. Thrift, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Hicks Thrift; daughter, Elizabeth (Lib) Thrift Jones of Siler City; sister, Alice T. Kidd of Pittsboro; brother, Vernon Thrift of Moncure; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

BARBARA JEAN DICKERSON FOURSHEE

Barbara Jean Dickerson Foushee, 55, of Asheboro, died Saturday, (06-04-2011) at Randolph Health & Rehab.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Foushee was born July 18, 1955, the daughter of Thomas and Gertrude (Jones) Dickerson. She was a native of Granville County and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Foushee; daughters, Michelle Harris of Oxford, Jessica Foushee of Kittrill; sons, Brian Searcy of Siler City, Jeremy Foushee of Sanford, Chadwick Harris of VA; father, Thomas Dicker-son of Sanford; brother, Dale Dickerson of Burlington; and eleven grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (06-08-2011) from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

KATHY CHARLENE NEAL MARKS

Kathy Charlene Neal Marks of Burlington, formerly of Pittsboro, died Saturday (05-28-2011).

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, (06-03-2011) at Gum Springs Baptist Church in Moncure.

Mrs. Marks is the daughter of Hershell Jean House and the late Kenneth W. Neal.

Surviving in addition to her mother are sons, Samuel H. Johnson of Burlington, Rodney W. Johnson of Chapel Hill; sisters, Cynthia N. Crabtree of Cameron, Deanna Glosson of Pittsboro; brothers, Kenneth W. Neal, Jr. of Hawaii, Karl D. Neal of Cary, Joel B. Neal of Pittsboro; stepmother, Victoria Blackmon of Pittsboro; and one grandson.

HENRY J. BLAND, SR.

Mr. Henry J. Bland, Sr., 88, of Pittsboro died Friday, (05-27-2011) at the Veteran’s Hospital in Durham.

Funeral services were held Saturday (06-04-2011) at 4 p.m. at Mt. Sinai AME Church, with Rev. Phillip Lynch officiating. Burial followed at Pittsboro Cemetery.

Mr. Bland was a member of Mt. Sinai A.M.E. Church, and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He worked at Horton High School and retired from Chatham Mills.

Survivors include daughter, Mrs. Judith Thompson; son, Henry Bland, Jr.; sisters, Lilla B. Turner, Sophia B. Lynn, both of Pittsboro; brother, Jacob Bland of Bronx, NY; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

MRS. MARY B. NEWBY

Mrs. Mary B. Newby, 73, of Siler City died Monday (06-06-2011) at U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

funeral service will be held Friday (06-10-2011) at 2 p.m. the First Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Surviving are her children, Robert “Doug” Newby, Rachel Marsh, Robin Blackwell, Keith Newby, Sherry Lynn Newby, Michael Newby, Eddie Newby, Vernon New-by; and sister, Lillie Currie.
