HARRY J. CLARK
Mr. Harry J. Clark, 87, of New Hill, died Sunday (01-09-2011) at U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held Friday (01-14-2011) at Liberty Chapel Church in Moncure with Rev. Norma Bryant officiating. Burial followed in Carolina Biblical Gardens in Raleigh.
Mr. Clark was a graduate of Rosenwald High School and a member of Liberty Chapel Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World Warr II.
Survivihng are sons, Phillip T. Clark of Pittsboro, Harry Oliver Clark of Siler City; sister, Emma Williams of Newton; brother, Jack D. Clark of Philadelphia, PA; five granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
JACINTA MARIA OWUSU TYO
Jacinta Maria Owusu Tyo of Pittsboro died Monday, (01-03-2011) At U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (01-15-2011).
Surviving is the father, Andrew James Tyo; mother, Ana Marva Tyo; brother, Abraham Jack Owusu Tyo, and sister, Eloise Enrionsta Owusu Tyo.
RUBYE WOMBLE SCOTT
Rubye Womble Scott of Newport News departed this life on January 10, 2011. She was a native of Chatham County, North Carolina. She was the widow of Elmon Lee Scott, Jr. They were married 46 years before he passed away in 1990. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Womble of New Hill, North Carolina. Mrs. Scott was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a lifelong Tarheels fan. She taught school for a number of years in Apex, North Carolina and in Hampton, Virginia.
Mrs. Scott was a charter member of Warwick United Church of Christ. She was on the original building committee, and was one of the organizers and the first president of the Women’s Fellowship of the church. She was active for many years as a teacher in the Sunday School.
In later years, she very much enjoyed the Lifelong Learning Society at Christopher Newport University. She moved to the Annapolis area several years ago to live near her daughter and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Stacy Lancaster, son in law, Alan Lancaster, and grandson, Scotty Lancaster; also three siblings, Nancy Crocker of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, George Womble of New Hill, North Carolina, Dorothy Stevens of Sanford, North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind many friends in Newport News and the Annapolis, Maryland area.
The family received visitors at the Peninsula Funeral Home on Friday, January 14 from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. A funeral service was held for her at Warwick United Church of Christ on Saturday, January 15 at 11:00 a.m.
EDMOND FRANKLIN “BUCK” GUNTER
Edmond Franklin "Buck" Gunter, 87, of 124 Buck Gunter Road, Siler City, was called home to be with his Savior from the UNC Hospital on Thursday, January 13, 2011.
Mr. Gunter was born in Lee County on September 29, 1923 to Walter and Carrie Gunter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Siler City. He was a retired chicken farmer and spent his life helping his neighbors and working for his family. He enjoyed being outdoors, mowing, gardening and spending time with his granddaughters.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mary Kate Brooks Gunter of the home; daughter, Brenda Gunter Gay and husband Simeon of Siler City; sister, Frances Gaines of Antioch; granddaughters, Sherry and Julie Gay of Siler City; and numerous sisters-in-laws, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey, Howard, Lewis and Edward Gunter.
The family received friends Saturday, January 15, 2011 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church. The funeral was held Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 120 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City, with burial following in the church cemetery.

OPAL C. JOHNSON
Opal Clemmons Johnson, age 82, of Lexington, passed away Thursday morning, January 13, 2011, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Ray Howell, 3rd and Rev. Tommy Wilson, officiating. The family received friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday at Rocky River Baptist Church Cemetery in Siler City.
Mrs. Johnson was born August 6 1928, in New Hanover County, to Thurston Clemmons, Sr. and Lena Danford Clemmons. After living on a farm in Brunswick County, her family moved to Myrtle Beach in 1938. She graduated from Myrtle Beach High School in 1945, earned her BA from Meredith College in 1949 and continued on to earn her Masters from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She taught school in Brevard and Lexington and served as principal at Eanes, Cecil and South Lexington for 30 years. She was a member of North Carolina Retired School Personnel. Mrs. Johnson was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church since 1952, serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, leader of the Frady/Johnson Group and chairman of the Health and Wellness Council. She served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma and was a member of the Garden Makers. Mrs. Johnson was also very active in the Meredith College Alumnae. She was someone who always found room in her garden for an extra flower, a perch at her feeder for another bird and a place in her heart for any stray cat. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade William Johnson on October 2, 2008.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Beth Pfaff and husband, John III, of Chester, NJ; one son, William D. Johnson and wife, Kathryn, of Fort Mill, SC; four grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth Pfaff of Basking Ridge, NJ, William H. Pfaff of Chester, NJ, Emily Elizabeth Johnson and Walter William Johnson both of Fort Mill, SC; brother, Major Thurston Clemmons, Jr. of Bolivia; brother-in-law, Paul D. Johnson of Siler City; sister-in-law, Sarah J. McPherson of Snow Camp; ten beloved nieces and nephews; and her dearest cousin, Kenneth Swain of Myrtle Beach, SC.

LINDA G. BRYAN
Linda Gregoritsch Bryan passed away January 8, 2011 in her home in Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, after a two-year battle with cancer. Linda was born in Glendale, Queens, NY April 11, 1946. She moved to Pittsboro, North Carolina in July of 1981 with her three children.
Linda is survived by her husband Paul; three children, Jodie Turnbull, Michael Gregoritsch, Carol Schirmer; step-daughter, Kristen Knispel; her beloved grandchildren, Matt and Kyle Sirls, Penn and Devin Knispel, Laura and Tessa Schirmer, and Xander Gregoritsch. Linda leaves behind two sisters, Eileen Linz, Joan Hauck; and a sister-in-law, Judy Jens.
DORIS COX YORK
Doris Cox York, 86, formerly of 3468 Piney Grove Church Road, Siler City died Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.
Mrs. York was born September 15, 1924, the daughter of Yancey Y. and Bleeka (Brewer) Cox. Mrs. York was born in Randolph County, a retired poultry farmer, a homemaker and had also worked at Kellwood Manufacturing. She was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church but in earlier years was a member of Rocky River Friends Meeting. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years, Billy Edward York, Sr.; brothers, Ira C. Cox, Lloyd Cox, Donald Y. Cox and William Tate Cox; sisters, Peggy Ann Cox and Marie C. Gee.
She is survived by daughter, Patricia Y. Byerly and husband Wayne of Siler City, one son, Billy Edward York, Jr. and wife Linda of Siler City, daughters, Diane Y. Harris and husband Jerry of Siler City, Jan York of Raleigh; three sisters, Betty Glass of Liberty, Martha Teague of Coleridge, Wanda Nance and husband Click of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Christie Shelton and husband Kenneth, Shannon York and wife Kim, Chad York, Brandi Pugh and husband Timmy, Nicky Starr and wife Melissa, Jodie Powers and husband Justin; great-grandchildren, Jessica and Caitlin Pike, MaKayla and Skylar Pugh, Cole York and Cayden Powers; great grand-dogs, Wally and Zeta.
The family received friends Friday, January 14, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and at other times at the home of Diane and Jerry Harris, 975 Will Brown Road, Siler City. The funeral was held Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Rocky River Friends Meeting, 1795 Staley-Snow Camp Rd., Siler City with David Hobson officiating. Burial followed in Piney Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

COLON LEE GARRETT
Colon Lee Garrett, 65, of Bonlee died Friday, January 14, 2011 at his residence.
Mr. Garrett was born January 17, 1945, the son of Henry and Cora Moffitt Garrett. He was born in Randolph County, served in the National Guard and attended Bonlee Baptist Church. He worked for fifteen years in the parts department of Welford Harris Ford. He enjoyed riding four wheelers, raising boxer dogs and spending time with his grandchildren. Colon was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Albert Garrett.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Webster Garrett; one daughter, Kris Garrett Bare and husband Jonathan of Bonlee; one son, Jon L. Garrett of the home; four brothers, Jim Garrett of Graham, Henry Leroy Garrett of Liberty, Daniel Garrett of Liberty, Homer Garrett of Snow Camp; grandchildren, Emerson, Hallie and Lizzie Mae.
The family received friends Saturday, January 15, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. The funeral was held Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Bonlee Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Williams officiating.
Burial followed in Hope Cemetery in Bonlee.

EDWARD DOUGLAS HARTSELL
Greenville – Edward Douglas Hartsell passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
The funeral service was conducted Wednesday, at 2 p.m. in Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Hartsell was born September 1, 1926 in Mount Airy, NC to Alberta Douglas and Eliza Willett Hartsell. He attended North Carolina State University and served in the United States Navy in Okinawa, Japan in 1944. He made his home in Greenville for the last 44 years, and retired from the NC Department of Labor where he was an apprenticeship training supervisor for 60 counties.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Hartsell and brother, Gene Hartsell.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pearl Carper Hartsell; son, Doug Hartsell, of Washington, DC; brother, Harry Hartsell and wife, Janice, of Henderson; sister in-law, Evelyn Hartsell, of Henderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

TOBY LYNN MOODY
Toby Lynn Moody, Sr., 56, of Bear Creek, died Wednesday, (01-05-2011) at Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell in Burlington.
The funeral was held Friday, (01-07-2011) at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, with Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Moody was born June 10, 1954, the son of Samuel Matthew and Mary Ruth Poe Moody, Sr. He was a native of Chatham County, a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church and a maintenance worker. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Samuel and Paul Moody.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Player Moody; daughter, Miranda Moody Boone of Picayune, MS; sons, Jesse Coley of Goldston, Jason Coley of Siler City, Toby Lynn Moody, Jr., Billy Moody, both of Bear Creek; sister, Brenda M. Griffin of Gulf; brothers, Ted Moody of Lincolnton, Wayne Moody of Staley, Terry Moody of Goldston, Lonnie Moody, Donnie Moody, both of Siler City; and three grandchildren.
