Mrs. Roella Smith Whitaker

Mrs. Roella Smith Whitaker, 91, formerly of 1326 Pleasant Ridge Road died Sunday, December 7, 2003 at Westchester Manor.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Shining Light Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Whitaker was a life-long resident of Guilford County and enjoyed her life as a farmer and homemaker. She was a faithful member of Shining Light Baptist Church. She loved to work in her garden and on her farm, but her greatest love was her family.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law and friend, Mrs. Jo Smith of Greensboro; two granddaughters, Debbie Cline and husband Norm of Kernersville and Sandy Vernon and husband Greg of Stokesdale; one great-grandson, the apple of her eye, Stephen Cline, she was predeceased by her beloved son Henry Clay Smith twelve years ago.

The family will receive friends from 7-9pm tonight at Forbis and Dick funeral service, Guilford Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shining Light Baptist Church, 4530 W. Wendover Ave., Greensboro, NC 27409.

Mrs. Ora Hudson Sharp of Greensboro died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at her residence.

Transferred to Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL.

Mrs. Irene Washburn Cobb
SERVICE DETAILS: When: December 13, 2003 2:00 PM
Graveside services will be held 2:00PM Saturday, December 13, 2003 in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Reidsville.

GREENSBORO – Irene Washburn Cobb 82, of Oakdale Heights, died on Wednesday December 10, 2003 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be held for Mrs. Cobb at 2:00 PM on Saturday December 13, 2003 in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Reidsville.

Mrs. Cobb was born on February 5, 1921 in Reidsville NC. She lived in Tampa FL for forty years where she was a dedicated nurse, and a faithful volunteer for both the Red Cross and Tampa Hospital. She returned to the Greensboro area five years ago.

Irene is survived by her two brothers Eugene B. Washburn and wife Shirley of Greensboro, and Julius R. Washburn and wife Dorothy of Thomasville. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Carlos Cobb and brother Lewis Edward Washburn Jr.

The family will greet friends following the graveside service on Saturday.

Forbis and Dick North Elm Street is serving the Cobb family.

Mrs. Laura Stanley Little

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.

GREENSBORO — Mrs. Laura Stanley Little, 91, of Presbyterian Home, died Sunday, December 7, 2003 at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

Mrs. Stanley was a native of Rocky Mount and had resided in Greensboro since 1937. She was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and also a member of the Faselo Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, one son, Zeb Little and her husband, James Bunyan Little in 1988.

Survivors include three children, Cecil S. Little and wife Pat of Jamestown, Laura S. Little of Tucson, AZ and David W. Little of Washington, DC; two sisters, Mae Barnett and Sue Taylor, both of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 PM, Monday, December 8, 2003 at Forbis & Dick funeral service, North Elm Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Miss Kathryn Lee Reynolds

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Greensboro – Kathryn Lee "Katy" Reynolds, 17, of 3700 Miller Drive, died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at her home.

funeral service will be Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ), 1900 West market Street. Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Park.

Katy was born in Tacoma, Washington.

She is survived by her mother, Judy Atkinson Reynolds, of Greensboro; father, Ricky Reynolds, of Salisbury; sister, Amy Myers, of Baltimore MD; brothers, Patrick Reynolds, of Wilmington; Jacob Reynolds, of Wilmington; and Johnny Reynolds, of Greensboro; paternal grandmother, Doris Hubbard, of Perry, FL; uncles, Robin Atkinson, of Bethesda, MD; and Greg Reynolds, of Winston Salem; Aunt, Nancy Lee of Rougemont, NC nieces, Heather Reynolds, of Wilmington, and Julia Myers, of Baltimore, special friend and caregiver, Mary Kinlaw, of Greensboro.

Flowers are welcome and appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to Gateway Education Center, 3205 E. Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405, or to Kids Path of Hospice, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.

The family will receive friends at home.

Mr. Russell T. Horn
SERVICE DETAILS: A Memorial service will be held at a later date.

GREENSBORO - Mr. Russell T. Horn, age 49, died Sunday, December 7, 2003 following a long hospital stay at Moses Cone Hospital.

There will be no funeral at this time, but a memorial service may be held at a later date.

He was born on June 11, 1954 in Langley Field, Virginia and lived most of his life in Maryland and Florida. He was the beloved son of Jimmy and Mary Horn of Greensboro.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Debra Horn; stepdaughters, Sherrie Barham of Burlington, two step grand children, Joshua and Jakob Barham; daughter, Stephanie Speakes, son in law, Ricky Speakes and two granddaughters, Ashley and Kaila Speakes of Elkton, Mary.; a son, Jason Horn of Frederick, Mary.

He is also survived by two sisters, Cheryl Karlick of Greensboro and Vinnie Pinkney of Morgantown, W.V.; two brothers, David Horn of Seattle, Wash. And Charles Grubb of Reno, Nev.; several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lewis Dewey Hodges
SERVICE DETAILS: When: December 5, 2003 11:00 AM
Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Friday, December 5, 2003 at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Chapel. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens.

GREENSBORO — Mr. Lewis Dewey Hodges, 91, of 1606 Hobbs Rd., died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 5, 2003 at Forbis & Dick funeral service, North Elm Street Chapel. A private committal service will follow at Westminster Gardens.

Mr. Hodges was a native of Harnett County and the son of the late George and Thena Bryant Hodges. He attended Campbell University on a football scholarship and served in the National Guard. He was a member of the Carolina Virginia Fashion exhibitors for 50 years and was also a member of both the Starmount Forest Country Club and the Guilford College Kiwanis Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, one sister and one son, Richard Barry Hodges.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Constance Loftin Hodges; two daughters, Phyllis H. Hill and husband Tom of Chicago, Illinois and Leigh H. Parrish and husband Buddy of Greensboro; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Parrish of Raleigh, Ryan Parrish of Greensboro, Stephanie Nettles of St. Augustine, Florida, Barry Hodges of Wichita, Kansas, Parker Hodges of the U.S. Army and Layton Hodges of Florida and four great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the service from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM, Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Urban Ministry, 305 W. Lee Street, Greensboro, NC, 27406 or to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC, 27405.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hal Stoneking and the caregivers from Hearthside Home Care for the exceptional care they provided for Mr. Hodges.

Commander Donald Clark Taylor

Commander Donald Clark Taylor (USN-Ret.) died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Wesley Long Community Hospital.

Donald Taylor was born on June 19, 1914 in Ryegate, Montana to the late Monte and Colista Carsley Taylor. Commander Taylor was a 36 year veteran of the U. S. Navy. Serving during World War II he refused to surrender at Corriegidor and was awarded the Navy Cross. During later service in the Korean War, Commander Taylor was shot down and awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Shaw Taylor of the home; two sons Major Donald Clark Taylor and his wife Teresa of Gainesville, Virginia and David Tracy Taylor of Livermore, California; a sister Katherine Kearns of Greensboro; grandson Capt. Ryan Yamaki-Taylor of Gainesville, Virginia; a special niece Virginia Way and her husband, Howard of Greensboro as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel is serving the Taylor family.

Mrs. Jewell Kerns Kearns of Greensboro died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Graveside services will be held 11:00AM Tuesday, December 28, 2003 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:00PM Monday evening at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Chapel.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Kearns Baynes of Greensboro; sisters, Virginia Boyd of Charlotte, Marie Thomas and her husband, John of Hoffman, NC, Lou Jordan and her husband James of Covington, GA, Becky Lynch and her husband, John of Dundee, IL, Christine Ganiko and her husband, Gus of Pensacola, FL and Betsy Reavis of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Elizabeth Baynes of Reston, VA; brother-in-law, David L. Kearns of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Virginia C. Kerns of Newport News, VA and many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
