JOHN (JACK) DEWITT WOLFE
Jack Wolfe, 89, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2014 at his home with his family at his bedside.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marie, with whom he shared over 68 years. He is also survived by his children, Jimmy Wolfe and wife Cheryl, along with their five children, Lillian Vaughan and husband Mike and their three children, Sarah Dixon and husband Roger with their three children; plus 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Dollar. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewitt and Lillian Wolfe and one great-grandchild.

A celebration of life graveside service will be held at Chatham Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Hall-Wynne funeral service, 396 West St.Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Memorials may be made to Chatham Methodist Church or Chatham County Council on Aging. The family would like to give a special “thank you” to all of the many care givers and to UNC Hospice during his recent illness.

The arrangements for Mrs. Rowland are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

REBECCA ANN WADDELL
Rebecca Ann Waddell, 69, of Travelers Rest, S.C. passed away Sunday, (05-18-2014) at her home.

Born in Robbins, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Millie Kennedy Brown. A homemaker, she was of the Baptist faith. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Lee Deaton, Ronnie Fulton Deaton, daughter, Peggy Sue Woolling; and a brother, Cecil Clyde Brown.

She is survived by her husband, Phillip Waddell; son, Terry Deaton; step-son, Larry Renner; daughters, Brenda Buckner, Kathy Foote; step-daughters, Sandy Hayes, Janet Newell; brother, James Brown; 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at The Howze Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Brown’s Chapel Christian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from noon until 1 p.m. at Brown’s Chapel Christian Church in Robbins.

The Howze Mortuary, Travelers Rest, SC, is in charge of arrangements.

ROGER WAYNE OVERMAN
Roger Wayne Overman, 82, of Liberty, died Tuesday, (05-06-2014) at The Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance – Caswell.

A funeral service was held Friday, (05-09-2014) at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, with Rev. Howard Spray officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Roger was the son of the late John Ralph and Nellie Hinshaw Overman. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jenny O. Welch, and a brother, Larry “Bud” Overman. He retired from Monarch Hosiery Mill, Inc. and attended Pleasant Hill Christian Church.

Surviving is his wife, Peggy Roach Overman; son, Gary L. Overman; daughter, Cathy J. Overman; and a brother, Jack D. Overman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215or Piedmont Rescue Mission Inc., PO Box 996, Burlington, NC 27216.

JACOB AFTON UNDERWOOD
Jacob Afton Underwood, 89, of Sanford, died Sunday, (05-11-2014) at Central Carolina Hospital.

The funeral was held at Sanford Chapel Wednesday, (05-14-2014) at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Gordon presiding. A private burial followed at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Moore County.

He was born in Moore County, on June 7, 1924, to the late William F and Fannie Laton Underwood. He worked as a machinist and served our country in the US Navy.

Surviving is his wife Nancy Smith Underwood of Sanford; a son Ronald Underwood of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.

TERRY ELLEN GOMILLION BROOKS
Terry Ellen Gomillion Brooks, 59, of Siler City died Saturday, (05-10-2014) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, (05-13-2014) at 11 a.m. at Rocky River Baptist Cemetery.

Mrs. Brooks was born in Chatham County on August 30, 1954, the daughter of Broward Gomillion and Peggy Buckner. Terry was a 1972 graduate of Jordan Matthews and had worked as a bookkeeper at Justice Motors. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving is her husband, Tim Brooks; two sons, Jon Brooks, Zach Brooks, both of Siler City; sisters, Diane B. Smith of Bear Creek, Donna K. Carden of Henderson; brothers, Gary Lee Kirby, Steven T. Kirby, both of Chapel Hill, Allen Gomillion of Ponce De Leon, FL.; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, P O Box 610, Pittsboro, NC 27312or a charity of donor’s choice.

LOUISE HARWARD
Louise Andrews Harward, 86, died Saturday, (05-10-2014) at Cambridge Hills in Pittsboro.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday (05-13-2014) at Pittsboro Baptist Church.

She was born on December 6, 1927 in Chatham County, the daughter of the late Samuel Lester Andrews and Mary Walters Andrews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Preston Harward. She was an elementary school teacher for 43 years – most of those years were spent teaching 2nd and 3rd grades at Pittsboro Primary School.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Reeves of Julian, Deborah Tilson of Chapel Hill; and three grandchildren.

PEGGY ROACH OVERMAN
Peggy Roach Overman, 79, of Liberty passed away Sunday, (05-11-2014) at The Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, (05-14-2014) at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, with Rev. Howard Spray officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Overman was the daughter of the late Stanford T. and Esther Mae Hundley Roach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Wayne Overman; sisters, Naomi Pike, Vivian Angel and brothers, Linwood and Boyd Roach. Peggy was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church.

Surviving is her son, Gary L. Overman; daughter, Cathy J. Overman; sister, Betty Lou “Tootie” Hawkins and brother; Willie Roach.

ELVIN C. COX

Elvin Clarkson Cox, 94, of Ramseur, died Monday, (05-12-2014) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, (05-15-2014), at Parks Crossroads Christian Church in Ramseur with Rev. Randy Kelley and Rev. James Turner officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sunset Knoll Cemetery, Ramseur, with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was born March 27, 1920 in Randolph County to the late Walter and Dora Cox. Elvin was a WW II veteran serving in the US Army, and receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He retired as Ramseur Postmaster after 30 years. He was a member of Parks Crossroads Christian Church. He had been a member of the Lion’s Club, American Legion, DAV, and served as a Ramseur Town Commissioner for three terms.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Moody Cox, a brother, Howard Cox and sister Mary Ruth Cox.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Simmons Cox; sons, Terry Cox of High Point, Jeff Cox of Shalimar, FL, Brian Cox of Charlotte; step-sons, Richard Simmons of Richmond, VA, Brian Simmons, of Staley, Andy Simmons of New Bern; two grandchildren, and seventeen step-grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home & Cremation Service, in Ramseur; other times at the residence.

ANNIE MORRIS PHILLIPS
Mrs. Annie Morris Phillips, 100, of Gulf died Tuesday, (05-13-2014), at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation Center in Sanford.

The funeral will be held Thursday, (05-15-2014), at 4 p.m. at Gulf Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bruce Benton and Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the funeral and burial. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mrs. Pebble Kidd, 1206 Lee’s Chapel Road, Sanford.

Mrs. Phillips was born December 20, 1913, in Chatham County, to the late Matthew H. Morris and Kate Causey Morris. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lacy Phillips; a son, Jimmie L. Phillips and a daughter, Jayne P. Brown. She was a member of Gulf Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

FRED HASKAL POSTON
Fred Haskal Poston of Siler City passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. He was born June 18, 1927 in Statesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Rachel Gilbert Poston, and a sister Peggy Summers.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Siler City, officiated by Rev. Clyde Denny.

Fred was a graduate of Wake Forest College and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He came to Siler City as a math teacher and coach. He served as a principal in the Chatham County School system for 32 years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member of the Joyner-Brewer Sunday school class, and a former member of the sanctuary choir. He served in the Lions Club International and was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow for 50 years of service. Fred was an avid sportsman and enjoyed swimming, tennis and golf. After retirement, he enjoyed many wonderful times at the beach and traveling across the country.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janice Alexander Poston and three children, Jan Guenther and husband Mark of Jamestown, Charles Poston and wife Kathy also of Jamestown, and Thomas Poston and wife Debbie of Albemarle.

One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren, Robert (Allison) Guenther of Raleigh, Andrew Guenther (fiancée Melissa Martin) of Charlotte, Page Poston Gleeson (Ryan) of High Point, Marley and Cal Poston of Jamestown, Michael Poston of Raleigh, Chaney Poston of Boone, Rachel and Stephen Poston of Albemarle. He will also be missed by his beloved dog, CJ.

Memorials may be made to the FUMC general fund or the Janice and Fred Poston Scholarship fund at FUMC which was started in 2013 by their children and grandchildren to honor their lifelong commitment to education.
