RUTH LINDLEY JOHNSON
Ruth Lindley Johnson of Lindley Mill Road, Snow Camp died Saturday, May 10, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Chatham County on April 16, 1925, the daughter of Carl and Eula Lindley. She was a member of Center United Methodist Church. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Johnson; her parents; sisters, Annie Lou Brown and Hilda Johnson.

She is survived by son, Timothy Johnson; daughter, Diane J. Griffin and husband Gary, both of Raleigh; grandchildren, Ashley Griffin Rose and husband, Dave of Cary, Brad Griffin of Atlanta and Matthew Johnson of Wilmington; great-granddaughters, Lindley and Avery Rose; special nephews, Larry and Darrell Johnson of Snow Camp, and Terry Brown of Pittsboro.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Miller, his nurse Kelly, and the staff at Kernodle Clinic for their love and excellent care of their Mother.

The family received friends Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Center United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Park officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Center United Methodist Church.

MYRLE LUTTERLOH SWICEGOOD
Myrle Lutterloh Swicegood, PhD, finished her journey on May 11, 2014. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, George W. Swicegood, sister, Elizabeth Williams and brother, Charles W. (Jack) Lutterloh.

Dr. Swicegood, the daughter of Charles H. Lutterloh and Fannie Dark Lutterloh, was born on June 8, 1924. She grew up on a dairy farm near Pittsboro, N.C. She graduated from Pittsboro High School in 1940 and Woman’s College in Greensboro (U.N.C. -Greensboro) in 1944 with a B.S. Degree in Home Economics Education.

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service became her vocation. She was a 4-H and Home Economics Agent in Wake County and District Agent and Special Programs Agent for the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service of N.C. State University for 24 years. During this time, she was granted two study leaves to earn her Masters’ Degree in Sociology and Counseling and Guidance at N.C. State University and her Doctoral Degree in Adult Education at NCSU and Human Environmental Sciences from U.N.C. -Greensboro. While at NCSU, she designed, authored and implemented the “”Lap Reader Program” for North Carolina families. This became the forerunner of Governor Hunt’s Early Education Programs in N.C.

In 1980, she joined the Cooperative Extension Service of South Carolina and was based at Clemson University. It was at Clemson where Dr. Swicegood was chosen to be the Assistant Director of Home Economics. People were her passion, and strengthening families was her lifetime, professional goal.

Dr. Swicegood and her husband, George, moved to New Bern, N.C. in 1989. She soon became involved in the community and served part-time as Coordinator of Family Life Activities for the Atlantic Baptist Association. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Carolina East Medical Center and as a Hospice volunteer trainer. Dr. Swicegood was an active member at the First Baptist Church of New Bern, and both the Church and Church Family brought her special joy. She loved her Elizabeth Parker Sunday School Class and enjoyed facilitating a monthly gathering of church members in a group called “Conversations”. Dr. Swicegood had a special interest in the youth of First Baptist Church and offered them encouragement to excel and exceed.

Dr. Swicegood received many outstanding honors and awards. These included membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta and Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award from the U.N.C. – G School of Human Environmental Sciences, the Distinguished Alumni Award from U.N.C.—G, and the Clemson Chapter of the American University Professors award of Merit. She was recently inducted into the Jane S. McKimmon Family and Consumer Science Hall of Fame at N.C. State University.

Myrle and her husband, George, felt their greatest honors and achievements were through their daughters: Beth Freistaedter and her husband Alex, Becky Clark and her husband Bob, and Linda Williams and her husband Greg. They were also blessed with seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as a great multitude of friends, including her special friend, Dick Kidd.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at the First Baptist Church of New Bern at239 Middle Street on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. The family received treasured friends and family in the Sanctuary of First Baptist one hour prior to the church services. Cotton Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

A graveside service and burial will be at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church at 355 Chicken Bridge Road in Pittsboro, N.C.on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 11 a.m.

Gifts may be made to the Heritage and Hope Endowment, First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1463, New Bern, N.C.28562, or to the Brown’s Chapel Building Fund at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 785, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.

GREGORY JOHN KEMPER
Gregory John Kemper, age 54, of Pittsboro, died Monday May 12, 2014 in his home after a yearlong battle with cancer.

He was born November 26, 1959 in Eau Claire, WI. He retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service and worked for UNC Hospital for the last 14 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Davis Kemper; his parents, Bruce and Barbara Kemper of Chapel Hill; his daughter, Jessie Burns Kemper of the home; a step- daughter, Kayla Burns of Pittsboro; his brothers and their wives, Chris and Jane Kemper, Tom and Barb Kemper, all of Wisconsin; two sisters, Kate Bryant of Chapel Hill and Nicole Carswell and her husband Derek of Apex.

A visitation will be held Saturday from 1-2 p.m. with a funeral service following at 2 p.m. at Hall Wynne Funeral Services in Pittsboro.

SHERRIE LYNN (HORTON) MOONEY
Chapel Hill- Sherrie Lynn Mooney went to be with our Lord and Savior on May 9, 2014.

She is survived by her wonderful, loving husband of 21 years, Jeff Mooney; sister Lucy and husband Skippy Godfrey, sister Jenny and husband Bill Golat; brother Bobby and wife Tamar Horton, brother Tom and Karen Godwin; brother-in-law, Preston Mooney; sister-in-law, Vicki and husband Mike Holleman; and father-in-law, Andy Mooney. She was preceded in death by her parents, Brodie and Norma Horton, and mother in-law Alice Mooney.

Sherrie was adored by her three nephews and two nieces, Ryan and wife Tammy Holleman, Chase Holleman, Christian Holleman and fiancé Kamile Smith, Anna and husband Daniel Corbin, and Amy Godwin; as well as four great-nieces, Karli Holleman, Emma Corbin, Lane Corbin, and Harper Corbin.

Sherrie was born August 22, 1959 in Chatham County. She grew up in the Pittsboro and Chapel Hill Community, and graduated from Northwood High School. Sherrie had worked for the Orange Sheriff's Department and University of North Carolina. Sherrie retired from UNC Hospital of Chapel Hill.

Sherrie had spent more than 20 years volunteering in Emergency Services in Orange and Chatham County. She was a former member of Chatham County Rescue Squad, Orange County Rescue Squad and current member of the White Cross Volunteer Fire Department in Chapel Hill.

Aside from her devotion to her family, Sherrie loved helping people, old and young. Sherrie was part of raising and caring for a countless number of children and was a mother to so many.

Arrangements for Sherrie Mooney: visitation was at Antioch Baptist Church, Tuesday, May 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., located at 1707 White Cross Road in Chapel Hill NC 27516. The Celebration of her Life was held Wednesday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church.

The family will graciously accept flowers or donations made in Sherrie’s name to Susan G. Komen Fund, Antioch Baptist Church or White Cross Fire Department.

EDWARD CHAPIN OLDHAM
Mr. Edward Chapin Oldham, 91, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at Cambridge Hills in Pittsboro.

Chapin was born on March 13, 1923 in Chatham County, NC, son of the late Coley Graham Oldham and Mamie Cooper Oldham. He honorably served as a Master Sergeant in the Army Signal Corps in Okinawa, Japan during WW II. Chapin met and married the former Audrey Campbell. They were together 61 years until her death October 9, 2003.

Chapin Oldham is survived by his sons, Chapin Pierre “Pete” Oldham (Dare Scott Oldham) of Asheboro, and Steven Eugene “Gene” Oldham (Vicky Thomas Oldham) of Pittsboro; his grandchildren, Andrea Oldham Anderson (Calvin) of Yorktown, VA, Heather Oldham Osborne (Jody) of Clemmons, Steve Oldham (Catherine Hamm Oldham) of Pittsboro, and T.J. Oldham (Jenna Arthurs Oldham) of Pittsboro; his great-grandchildren, Eric, Brian and David Anderson, Jordan, Daniel and Emma Grace Osborne and A.J. Oldham; his brother, Graham Camp Oldham of Pittsboro; and his sister-in-law, Emma Dell Ritter of High Point.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Hall-Wynne funeral service, 396 West Street, Pittsboro, NC. A funeral service for Mr. Oldham was held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 in the Griffin Chapel of Hall-Wynne, Pittsboro with the Reverend Ray Gooch presiding. Burial followed at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The arrangements for Mr. Oldham were under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

SYLVIA FAYE TEAGUE MOODY
Sylvia Faye Teague Moody, 75, of Siler City died Tuesday, (04-29-2014) at her home.
A graveside memorial service was held Saturday, (05-03-2014) at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Darrell Garner and Rev. Eddie Ellis officiating.

Mrs. Moody was born in Guilford County on March 14, 1939, the daughter of Mamie Lee Phillips and James Spurgeon Teague, Sr. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by daughters, Scarlett M. Blue of Vass, Sandra M. Smith, Susan M. Tullis, both of Bear Creek; son, Tommy W. Moody of Bear Creek; sisters, Shirley T. Phillips of Bennett, Maggie T. Cox of Bear Creek; one brother, Claude Teague of Siler City; eight granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Health Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

SHERI PHILLIPS HOLCOMB
Sheri Phillips Holcomb passed away Wednesday, (04-30-2014).

Services were held at Antioch Baptist Church on Friday, (05-02-2014) at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Holcomb had a degree in Early Child Development, trained as a CNA and was a caregiver.

She is survived by her husband, Chris Holcomb; sons, Cliff Holcomb, Cameron Holcomb; daughter, Sara Holcomb; parents, Bruce and Iola Gaines Phillips; sister, Kelly Phillips Spivey; brother, Tyra Phillips; and two granddaughters.

LEON MASHBURN
Leon Mashburn, 84, of Seagrove passed away Wednesday, (04-30-2014) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Graveside funeral services were conducted Saturday, (05-03-2014) at Maple Springs Baptist Church Cemetery at 3 p.m. with Rev. Matthew Gunter and Rev. Billy Joe Brady officiating.
Mr. Mashburn was born in Moore County, and was a retired truck driver with Luck’s in Seagrove. He was the son of the late Brooks and Jennie Dowd Mashburn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Mashburn, a son, Tony Mashburn, a brother, Larry Mashburn, sisters, Angie Maude Oldham and Mary Sue Garner.
Survivors include daughters, Hilda King of Robbins, Tina Turner of Asheboro; step-sons, Spencer and Josh Goins; brothers, Joe Mashburn, Jerry Mashburn, both of Carthage; Six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

HAZEL LANGLEY GAUTIER
Hazel Langley Gautier, 88, of Sanford, died Friday, (05-02-2014) at her son’s home.

The funeral was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, (05-04-2014) at Sanford Church of God with Rev. Jerry Parsons officiating. Entombment followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Gautier was born in Moore County, on July 20, 1925 to the late Willie Langley and Eula Elkins Langley. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Eugene Wilson Gautier; daughters, Frances Elizabeth Gautier, Doris Jean Painter; brothers, Charles, Roy, Jim Langley and a sister, Ruth Hurley.

Mrs. Gautier was a member of Sanford Church of God, and also attended Holly Springs Baptist Church and had worked at Cornell-Dubilier for several years.

She is survived by a son, Eugene Wilson Gautier; a daughter Penny Barbour; sisters, Ester Smith and Betty Pinson, all of Sanford; seven grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren and four great- great-grandchildren.

RONALD LARRY MOORE
Ronald Larry Moore, 71, of Siler City, passed away Friday, (05-02-2014) at his home.
A graveside service was held Sunday, (05-04-2014) at 2 p.m. at Lakeview Memorial Park, in Greensboro; with Rev. Eugene Dean officiating.

Mr. Moore was born October 16, 1942, the son of the late Roosevelt Clifton and Mollie Oldham Moore. He owned and operated the Fiddler’s Cove in Liberty for nine years.

Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Judy Braswell Moore; son, Ronald Larry Moore, Jr. of Siler City; sister, Marie Moody of Danville, VA; and a brother, Harold Moore of Greensboro

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph County, PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.

JEAN BRYAN

Jean Bryan, 81, died early Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Bryan was born on December 26, 1932 in Orangeburg, SC, daughter of the late Pressley Boyleston and Myrtle Pooser. She met and married Clinton Ellwood Bryan, Jr. They were together 54 1/2 years until his death in 2007. Jean spent much of her life helping people by assisting with taxes, cooking, or simply mowing the grass, she was always willing to help someone in need. She was a member of Pittsboro U.M.C.

In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was preceded in death by two brothers. She is survived by her son, Clinton Ellwood Bryan II (Jane) of Pittsboro; her daughter, Kathy Easterling (Bill) of Pittsboro; and her grandchildren, Chip Bryan, Reid Bryan, Andrew Easterling and Blaire Easterling.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014 in Jean’s home at 200 Ashford Drive, Pittsboro.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 at Pittsboro U.M.C.

The arrangements for Mrs. Bryan are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.
