CHESTER EUGENE “GENE” BARKER
Chester Eugene Barker “Gene”, 82, of Pittsboro, NC was born April 7, 1931 in Chatham County and entered into rest January 24, 2014 at VA Hospitals. As he said in an interview once before, his life was a bit “Strange.” As a young man he was employed at the Farmville coal mine, the only coal mine ever in Chatham County. While employed at the mine he walked into a dime store in Sanford where he spotted a young girl, he walked up to her mother and told her that one day he was going to marry her daughter, and three months later they were married. As a new couple they were stunned with the news that he had been drafted to fight for the United States Army in the 61st Infantry Division. After boot camp he was sent to Korea to fight in the Korean War, where on the last day of the war he was injured from shrapnel from a mortar round that exploded nearby, earning him the Purple Heart.
After returning home he used his GI bill to attend Barber School. In 1956, Gene with his wife and son, moved to Pittsboro, NC where he started in the now well known Barber shop on Main Street. He occupied the first chair in that barber shop and after a few years he was joined by Cadle Cooper Sr. They cut hair and shared stories together for 49 years until he retired in 2013 due to health concerns. Gene spent many years talking politics and the ways of the world from the barber chair, even landing a few on air interviews by news reporters, the biggest being Jonathan Carr from ABC news. He always had an opinion and was never afraid to share his with whoever would listen. But as they say, behind every good man stands a great woman, and Gene had his Margaret “Shug” as he called her. She was in the hair business herself, owning a beauty shop in Pittsboro, once her shop was even across the street from Gene’s barber shop. They shared a happy marriage together for 61 years, which included the births of three boys Steve, Tony and Eddie, whom all still reside in Pittsboro. Gene also had the joy of enjoying his five grandchildren, Jason, Heather, Lynsi, Taylor and Carson, whom he bragged about quite regularly. Gene’s legacy will always live on with the friends and family that knew and loved him.

His memorial services were held at Pittsboro Baptist Church on Wednesday January 29, 2014 at 2 p.m. Those who were unable to attend the memorial services were welcomed at his home at570 West Street in Pittsboro.

In closing, the family would like to thank the many people who have offered prayer and condolences.
