SALLIE PENDERGRASS WARD

Sallie Pendergrass Ward, of Liberty, died December 16, 2014 at Coventry House of Siler City. Sallie, the daughter of Joseph Merritt and Nannie Thomas Pendergrass, was born July 3, 1924 in Siler City. She was the ninth of twelve children.

Sallie resided with her husband, Robert Elton Ward, Sr., for 65 years in Liberty, and the last five years they have lived at Coventry House of Siler City. She was a loving mother to Robert Elton Ward, Jr. and his wife Carolyn, Kenneth Alfred Ward and his wife Shug, and Sallie Ann Ward VanLear, and her husband Charles Albert VanLear, III. She loved being a grandmother to Thea Ward Robichaux, her husband Ivy, Jennifer Ward James, her husband Stewart, Taeh Allison Ward, and Sarah Ward Sherman, and her husband Thomas. Due to her long life, she was blessed to be a part of the lives of three great-grandchildren, Zyler Ward Robichaux, Ivy Charles Robichaux, IV, and Elodie Blythe Booher Sherman.

In addition to her immediate family, left to cherish her memory is one sister, Patsy G. Kirchoff, North Fort Myers, FL, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sallie was a devoted wife, hard working mother, and friend to many. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Liberty, where she served in various ministries for many years. Being a very talented and creative lady found Sallie always working on a “project.” The Liberty Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club, and Liberty PTA were just a few of the local groups where Sallie served as a leader. Her days were filled enjoying time with family and friends, assisting Robert with his bookkeeping service, and her many hobbies–including cooking, sewing, crafts, reading, gardening, canning, and fishing and traveling with her husband.

A funeral service was held at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Liberty, Friday, December 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City, NC. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

PATSY BREWER STEWART
Patsy Brewer Stewart, 76, of Siler City died Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mrs. Stewart was born in Chatham County on June 13, 1938, the daughter of Marcus and Exie Lee (Sumner) Brewer. Patsy’s working career included employment at Carolina Telephone, Southern States, substitute teaching and Capital Bank. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class. Patsy enjoyed flower gardening, was a member the Smiling Squares Dance Club, trips to the beach, cooking, making fig preserves, reading her Bible, going to church, and sewing. She also enjoyed feeding birds and watching them. She was preceded in death by husbands, William Clarence Still and Stanley I. Stewart; sisters, Jean Vernon, Ruby Thompson, Rebecca Evans, Barbara Camp; brother, Darrell Brewer; and step-daughter, Linda Emerson.

She is survived by one son, Terry Still from Bolivia; daughter, Janna Sanders and husband Kirk of Asheboro; grandsons, Shannon and Dustin Wilkie, Will Still; step-son, James Stewart of Parkton, NC; five step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The family received friends Saturday, December 20, 2014 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 120 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Golden officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

WILLIS LEE WHITEHEAD

Willis Lee Whitehead, 77, of Sedgefield Drive, Siler City died Thursday, December 18, 2014 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Whitehead was born in Perquimans County, NC on January 19, 1937, the son of George W. and Hilda (Griffin) Whitehead. He was a graduate of Lee Senior High School and a 1960 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Pharmacy. He worked as a licensed pharmacist for 50 years, coming to Siler City to open Chatham Rexall Drug with his business partner, Henry Dunlap. Willis was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City having served as a Sunday School teacher, a Deacon and a member of the choir. He maintained continuous civic involvement with Siler City Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees and Lions Club, where he received a lifetime membership in 2013. Willis was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Edna Donevan.

He is survived by his wife, Diane (Bowers) Whitehead; daughters, Barbara Townsend and husband Bobby, Loretta Batchelor and husband Chris, both of Bear Creek; sisters, Barbara Neblett of Richmond, VA, Marcella Grantham of Red Springs, NC; grandchildren, Dean, Barrett and Alayna Townsend, Katelyn and Hunter Batchelor; and a great-granddaughter, Sophie Townsend.

The family received friends Saturday, December 20, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 314 N.Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344; or a charity of donor’s choice.

ADA MAE WATSON SCOTTEN
Ada Mae Watson Scotten, 82, of Lake Drive, Siler City died Sunday, December 21, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Scotten was born in Jacksonville, Florida on March 15, 1932, the daughter of Martine T. and Ada (Moore) Watson. She was a member of Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church and a retired teacher. Ada Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Benton A. Scotten; her parents; two sisters, Nellie Elizabeth Watson, Helen Hall, and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Scotton.

She is survived by sons, John B. Scotten of Bear Creek, Marty Scotten and wife Debbie of Staley; brother, Gene Watson of Bonlee; grandchildren, Cassadi Walden and husband, Brett of Siler City, Thomas and Lauren Scotten of Siler City; great-granddaughter, Mary Catherine Walden.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Mark Richardson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 108 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

RONALD “MONTE” MONTGOMERY FAULKNER

Ronald “Monte” Montgomery Faulkner, 53, of Apex, died Friday, December 19, 2014 at his home.

He was a native of Warren County, IL, 1979 graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School in Siler City, veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was employed Integrators, Inc.

Monte was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Asa Faulkner and his father, Ralph Louis Faulkner.

He is survived by his son, Ethan Faulkner; a daughter, Abby Faulkner, both of the home; his mother, Reva Zielke of Alexis, IL; brother, Rod Faulkner of Lincoln, NE; his step-parents, Russell and Joan Faulkner Webster of Siler City; and a step-brother, Andy Elmore of Bear Creek.

A celebration of Monte’s life was held Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. in Thomas Funeral Home Chapel, Fuquay-Varina with Rev. Doug Humphrey officiating. The family received friends immediately after the service.

ROBERT NORTON DOWNING

Robert Norton Downing, 90, of NC Hwy 902, Siler City, died Monday, December 22, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Downing was born in Needham, Massachusetts on October 30, 1924, the son of Lawrence and Audrey (Norton) Downing. Robert was an active member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent for over 30 years, taught Sunday school and was a lay speaker. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and had been employed at Kellwood as a shipping supervisor. Robert was a sports enthusiast. He enjoyed all sporting events and had played professional baseball for the Carolina League. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Audrey Cooper.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rochelle (Clark) Downing; sons, Larry Downing and wife Pat of French-burg, KY, Tommy Downing of Siler City; grandchildren, Jason and Chad Downing; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Michael, Rebecca, Sarah, Caleb, Hannah; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 27, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

JUDITH “JUDI” KRAFFT McPHERSON
Judith “Judi” Elaine Krafft McPherson, 57, of Siler City, passed away Tuesday, (12-09-2014) at The Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance Caswell.

A memorial service was held Friday, (12-12-2014) at 11 a.m. at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel of Liberty.

Mrs. McPherson is the daughter of the late Julius and Helen Fellers Krafft and was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Cunha.

Surviving is her husband, Wilbur “Bill” McPherson of the home; daughters, Samantha McPherson of Siler City, Barbara Renae Ackerman of Liberty; sons, Eddie Pierce of Siler City, Roger Cosby of Locust Grove, GA, Michael Hiott of Mebane; sister, Cindi Ellis of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and seven grandchildren.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

JEAN AYRES KENERLY
Mrs. Jean Ayres Kenerly, 93, of Sanford, died Tuesday, (12-09-2014), at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

A graveside service will held Friday, (12-12-2014) at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro with Rev. Ronald E. Stoker officiating.

Mrs. Kenerly was born September 9, 1921, in Guilford County, to the late Thomas Owen Ayres and Ava Hobson Ayres. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Kenerly. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sanford, and she was an owner/operator of Kenerly Dry Cleaners.

She is survived by her son, George Hampton Kenerly, Jr. of Peoria, AZ; a daughter, Ann Barefoot of Garner; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

JOHNSIE KELLY BROWN
Mrs. Johnsie Kelly Brown of Cameron, died Wednesday, (12-10-2014).

CYNTHIA LEE RUSSELL
Cynthia Lee Russell, 88, of Chapel Hill, died Monday, (12-08-2014).

Arrangements are being handled by Cremation Society NC.

CHARLES EDWIN “EDDIE” WILLIAMS, JR.
Charles Edwin Williams, Jr., 60, of New Hill passed away on Monday, (11-24-2014).

Funeral services were held Saturday, (11-29-2014) at New Elam Christian Church with Pastor Lacy Frye officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams was born in Wake County on July 7, 1954, the son of Charles Edwin Williams, Sr. and Mary Patsy Williams. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, George Chappell Williams.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Patsy Williams of Raleigh; wife, Melaney Deal Williams of the home; son, Charles Edwin Williams, III of Apex; and a daughter, Tara L. Chodorow of Saxapahaw.

Memorial donations may be made to Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 138, Moncure, N.C.27559.

EMEL LOUISE ANDERSON CLEARY
Emel Louise Anderson Cleary, 83, of Sanford, died Sunday, (12-14-2014) at her home.

The family held a graveside service at Baptist Union Cemetery in Troutdale, VA on Wednesday, (12-17-2014) at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ronnie Cleary presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Cleary was born in Flatridge, VAon April 30, 1931 to the late Harlow Anderson and Hattie Testerman Anderson. She worked in manufacturing yarn as a spinner.

She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Daniel Cleary of the home; son, David Benjamin Cleary of Moncure; daughters, Betty Jo Worsham, Barbara Jean Church ill and Bonnie Joyce Nedrow, all of Sanford; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
