RONDA COBURN HOOFT

Ronda Coburn Hooft, 59, of Mt. Gilead Church Road, Pittsboro died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Hooft was born July 4, 1955 in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Ron and Beverly (LaFoy) Coburn. Ronda worked in payroll and enjoyed water skiing and camping.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Christian L J Hooft; one daughter, Kristin Hooft; two sons, Dustin O’Quinn and Derek Hooft, all of the home; her parents; three sisters, Lynn Green of Pittsboro, Penny Rebiero of Martinsville, VA, Sunshine Ramirez of Hagerstown, MD; one brother, Mike Coburn; and grandson, Preston Lee Riggans.

A graveside service was held Friday, November 28, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

JANIE OAKLEY DOWD

Janie Oakley Dowd, 82, of 9515 NC Hwy 902, Siler City died Sunday, November 30, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Dowd was born in Moore County on May 10, 1932, the daughter of James Carl and Bessie (Simpson) Oakley. Janie was retired from Kayser-Roth and a member of Meroney United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She enjoyed sewing, needle work and working in her garden. Mrs. Dowd was preceded in death by her parents, brother, J. C. Oakley and her husband, Bobby G. Dowd.

She is survived by two daughters, Lou Ann Dowd Moore and husband Charles, and Patty Dowd all of Bear Creek; grandchildren, Renee Moore-Bourbon of Hope Mills, Joshua Moore, Ethan Moore and Jonathan Hudson, all of Bear Creek; and great-grandson, Kagan Walls-Moore

The family received friends Tuesday, December 2, 2014 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the family residence. The funeral was held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Meroney United Methodist Church, 10568 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek with Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Meroney United Methodist Church.

ARTHUR L. DAVIS, JR.

Arthur Lee Davis Jr., 69, of Salisbury, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.

Arthur was born in Siler City on December 21, 1944, a son of the late Arthur Lee Davis Sr. and Edna Cheek Davis.

A 1963 graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School, Arthur was in the banking business for 20 years and was an owner-operator of a convenience store for 20 years.

A member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, he was an avid fisherman, loved being with his family and spending time with his best buddies, Scott Cornatzer and Fred Poplin.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia F. Davis; daughter, Adrienne Davis Smith and husband Rod of Harrisburg; son, Mark Davis and wife Amy of Salisbury; grandchildren, Addison, Carson, Jake and Elly; brothers, Steve Davis and Jeff Davis; sisters, Linda Culberson, Sharon Strong, Shelia Cheek, Jean Maupin, Donna Davis and Debra Branson.

Military graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard, by VA Chaplain, with military honors by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard and the Rowan County Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard, 201 E. Washington St., China Grove, NC 28023.

Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell, honored provider of Veterans Funeral Care, assisted the Davis family.

FRANCES PASCHAL BRACY
Frances Paschal Bracy, 96, of Siler City, and Sanford, died Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Parkview Rest and Retirement Center, Sanford.

Mrs. Bracy was born in Chatham County on August 27, 1918, daughter of Charlie and Flossie (Temple) Paschal. She was raised in Bonlee, and moved to Richmond, Virginia to attend the Medical College of Virginia nursing program. She was a Registered Nurse and worked many years in the Richmond area. It was there she met and married, the love They retired to Lewisetta, Virginia and enjoyed owning and operating a Marina for several years. Wilson Bracy died in 1991 and Frances moved back to Siler City and reconnected with family and friends. She started attending Siler City Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the people there. Due to health issues, Frances first moved to the Bayberry Inn in Sanford, and then to Parkview Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilson Bracy; a sister, Gladys Kerrick; brothers, Wade Paschal and Robert Paschal.

She is survived by her niece, Linda Paschal Comer and husband Carroll Comer of Robbins; nephews, Phil Paschal and wife Marti of Matthews, and John Paschal; special great-niece, Rebecca Drake and husband Robbie of Siler City and other great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Siler City Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 W. 3rd St., Siler City, NCwith Rev. Richard LaDew and Rev. Sue Flippin officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Bonlee.

REDELL MADISON SHEFFIELD

Mr. Redell Madison Sheffield, 67, of Robbins, passed away at FirstHealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst on Wednesday, (12-11-2013)

. Funeral services were held Tuesday, (12-17-2013) at 11 A.M., at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett with Rev. Jacyln Jones and Rev. Kenneth McNeill officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant View Friends Church cemetery in Eagle Springs.

Mr. Sheffield was a native of Moore County, and the son of the late Elder Ree Sheffield, and Dora Morgan Sheffield. He retired from Millikan Mills in Robbins. He was preceded in death by his father, Elder Sheffield, brothers, Roger, Cecil, Jerry, and sister, Ester Lineberry.

He is survived by his daughters, Tammy S. Johnson of Eagle Springs, Rose E. Sheffield of the home; sons, David Sheffield of Robbins, Jimmy Sheffield of Eagle Springs; sisters, Irene S. Davis of Star, Doris York of Coleridge, Joyce S. Hurley of Seagrove, Iris S. Lambert of Robbins; brother, Floyd Sheffield of Robbins; mother, Dora Morgan Sheffield of Eagle Springs; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to help with funeral expenses to Joyce-Brady Chapel, P.O. Box 89, Bennett, NC 27208.

DONALD MERLE LAWRENCE

Donald Merle Lawrence, 50, of Moncure died Thursday, (12-12-2013).

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Haywood Independent Bible Church Cemetery.

Mr. Lawrence was born in SC, a son of the late John Harvey Lawrence, Jr. and Ruth Bullard Lawrence. He was a graduate of East Carolina University earning a degree in History, and a Veteran of the Army and the Navy.

Mr. Lawrence is survived by a son, Shane Lawrence of Sanford; sister, Carol Beasley of Moncure; brothers, Joe Lawrence of Grifton, and John “Lynn” Lawrence of Moncure.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Cemetery Fund at Haywood Independent Bible Church.

AGNES WICKER APPLE
Agnes Wicker Apple, 89, formerly of Sanford died Saturday, (12-14-2013), at First Health Hospice House in Pinehurst.

The funeral was held Wednesday, (12-18-2013), at 11 a.m. at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Roberta Byram presiding. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Apple was born in Lee County, March 22, 1924, to the late J. Turner Wicker and Renna Munn Wicker. After her parent’s death, she was raised by her step-mother, Mattie Belle Underwood Wicker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lawrence “R.L.” Apple; sisters, Eoline Wicker Brooks and Hazel Corinna Wicker; and a half-brother, Clyde Wicker. She was a member of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church where she had enjoyed singing in the choir.

Surviving relatives include her son, Ronnie Apple of Sanford; daughters, Linda Apple Evanovich of Greenville, June Apple Galloway of Whispering Pines; brother, Talmadge Wicker of Lemon Springs; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials to Whispering Pines Fire and Rescue, 16 Hardee Lane, Whispering Pines, NC 28327 or First Health Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

ROY THOMAS McNEILL
Mr. Roy Thomas McNeill, 68, Robbins passed away Saturday, (12-14-2013) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, (12-18-2013) at 2 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church with Rev. William Hancock and Rev. Burton King officiating. Burial followed at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. McNeill retired from Perdue Farms after 47 years of service as a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas William McNeill and Beulah Wallace McNeill, sisters, Dora Kennedy, Margie Hussey, Dorothy Garner; and brothers, Garvin and Clarence McNeill.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Wilma Chalflinch McNeill; daughter, Jeanne McNeill Maness of Robbins; sisters, Maxine Ritter of Robbins, Lorene M. Hussey of Ramseur, Nettie M. Reynolds of Highfalls, Riley M. Turner of Sandy Ridge in Candor; brothers, Richard McNeill of Vass, Paul McNeill of Bennett; and two grandchildren.

THELMA “TONY” FERGUSON
Thelma “Tony” Ferguson, 65, of Siler City, departed this world peacefully with her husband and family by her side, on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Wesley Long Community Hospital, Greensboro.

Tony was born March 1, 1948 to the late Jessie Alston, Sr. and Virginia Alston. She was a homemaker and a self-employed caregiver. Tony often took her nieces and nephews on vacations and outings to parks and other areas of interest. She enjoyed ballgames, concerts, baking, being at the beach and she was an avid racecar fan. Also, she loved taking kids to the circus. She was preceded in death by her daughter Chickila Lynn Matthews; sisters, Geneva Alston, Virginia Alston; brothers, Jessie Alston, Jr. and Richard Alston.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband and soul mate of 37 years, Dewey Lee Ferguson; her son, Tracy Alston of Raleigh; her granddaughters, Adrienna, Deandria, Kerrah and Semarah Alston; her special baby dog, Zari; her god-daughter, Jessica Toni Crumpler of Willow Springs; sisters, Jeannie Alston and Evangelist Lucille Brooks (Ellis) both of Siler City, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family received friends Friday, December 13, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

FRANCES L. LANCASTER
April 18, 1921 – December 12, 2013

Frances L. Lancaster, age 92 of Chatham County, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, North Carolina.

Mrs. Lancaster retired from JP Stevens and resided in Roanoke Rapids for 56 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse W. Lancaster, Sr. after 56 years of marriage; three sisters, Bessie Jenkins, Hattie Mae Killebrew, Eunice Bell, and a brother, Linwood Lassiter.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Morgan and husband Bunkey; four sons, Warren Lancaster and wife Marie, Doug Lancaster and wife Phillis, Mitchell Lancaster and wife Cheryl, Tom Lancaster and wife Brenda; two sisters, Helen Eason and Marie Evans; eleven grandchildren, Ramie Morgan, Terry Lancaster, Jimmy Lancaster, Lisa Schons, Tony Morgan, Tommy Lancaster, Jamie Sieden, Larry Lancaster, Shannon Morgan, David Lancaster, and Brady Lancaster; 21 great grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Judy for the loving care given to her mother.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Antioch Baptist Church in Bolivia.

DOUGLAS WAYNE POWERS
Mr. Douglas Wayne Powers, 46, of 1001 Devil’s Tramping Ground Road, Bear Creek, passed away at his home on Friday, December 13, 2013.

Gravesides services were conducted Monday, December 16, 2013 at 2 p.m, at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Goldston, with Pastor JD Mullins officiating.

Mr. Powers was a native of Lee County, and the son of Alton “Buck” Powers, Jr. and the late Mary Ometta Welch Powers. He formerly worked for eight years at Hart Furniture in Siler City. He loved to spend time with his family, and loved to watch NASCAR races. He was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan. He enjoyed listening to country music, especially Hank Williams, Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Jeanna Sanders of Candor; sister, Karon P. Little and husband Dwight of Bennett; brother, Danny A. Powers and wife Veronica of Bear Creek; father, Alton “Buck” Powers, Jr. of the home; granddaughter, Adriana Sanders; and grandsons, Aleyandro and Carlos Sanders.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett, and at the other times at the home in Bear Creek.

MOZELLE BROOKS GREEN
Mozelle Brooks Green, daughter of the late Manley and Nellie Snipes Brooks was born in Chatham County on October 15, 1924. She departed her earthly life on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 in her home, at the age of 89.

She attended school in Chatham County before moving away. While living in New York, she met and married the late Jule Green. She resided in New York until she retired and returned to Pittsboro, where she lived, until her death. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Rodgers, James and Eddie Jack Brooks.

She is survived by sisters, Annie Matthews, of Pittsboro, Shirley Frierson of Brooklyn, NY; brothers, Lenon Brooks of Pittsboro, Shelton Brooks, of Washington, DC; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Homegoing services for Mrs. Green were held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 16, 2013 at Hall-Wynne funeral service in Pittsboro. Burial followed in Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Zion cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Arrangements were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.
