JOYCE VAUGHN BEAL
Joyce Vaughn Beal, 71, of Beal Road, Goldston, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Mrs. Beal was born in Chatham County on March 15, 1942, the daughter of John and Josie (Gaines) Vaughn. She had been employed as an inspector at Mastercraft. Joyce was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and enjoyed reading her Bible, going out to eat with the senior citizens group from church. She also enjoyed sewing. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Reid O. Beal; daughter, Tammy Beal Buie; father, John Robert Vaughn; brother, John Wayne “Weasel” Vaughn; and sister, Ada Jean Jones.

She is survived by two sons, Randy Beal and Marty Beal, both of Goldston; mother, Josie (Gaines) Vaughn of Goldston; grandchildren, Allison Buie Strohacker, Brittany Anne Beal, Brandon Dean Beal; son-in-law, Allen Buie of Vass; and great-granddaughter, Serene Elizabeth Womble.

The family received friends Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the family home.

The funeral was held Sunday, August 25, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston with Rev. Mike Garner and Rev. Bob Griffith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston, NC 27252.

BEVERLY JEAN FREDERICK OLSON
Beverly Jean Frederick Olson, 67, of Ed Clapp Road, Siler City, died Monday, August 26, 2013 at Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.

Mrs. Olson was born May 11, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA. She had been employed as an accountant and was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church. Beverly enjoyed gardening, shopping and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sandy Cleesattle.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Charles E. Olson; two daughters, Arleen McPherson of Siler City, Stacey Olson of Los Angeles, CA; one son, Scott Wetsky and wife Michelle of Amsterdam, NY; sister, Pat Belbot of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

No formal visitation or service is planned.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220.

JOY CREWS CLIFTON
Mrs. Joy Crews Clifton of Pittsboro, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Genesis Health Care, Siler City Center.

Joy was born in Mt. Gilead, NC, the daughter of William Zeb and Fannie Simmons Crews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Thornton Clifton and her daughter, Joy Clifton Goodwin. Joy devoted her life to her home, family and church, Gum Springs Baptist Church where she taught children in Sunday School and Bible School for 30 years.

The Celebration of her life was held Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Gum Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Jackie Franks and Rev. Ray Gooch presiding. The family received friends following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gum Springs Baptist Church, 227 Gum Springs Church Road, Moncure, NC 27559.

Arrangements for Mrs. Clifton are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation, Pittsboro, NC.

JOHN DAVID (“J.D.”) ANDREWS
John David (“J. D.”) Andrews, 93, of Ocala, Florida, and a long-time resident of Siler City, died on August 25, 2013. J. D. was born April 3, 1920 to John and Georgia Ruth Andrews in rural Chatham County and was raised on the family farm on Harold Andrews Road. J. D. was the 12th of 13 children. He attended Siler City schools until he had to drop out to help with the family farm.

He married LaVerna York of Ramseur, N. C. on January 18, 1941. They lived and worked in Ramseur a few years before making Siler City their home for almost 50 years. In the early years he was a salesman for Chatham Foods. In 1957, J. D. along with partners Marshall McDaniel, Archie Brower and Curtis Moore formed Carolina Poultry and bought the AR Pugh building in Bonlee. Carolina Poultry moved to Siler City in 1964 and moved into a new plant on US 64 east. Gails Phillips and Glen Routh merged their hatchery and feed business with Carolina Poultry and operated as partners for the next 18 years. When they sold to Lane Processing in 1981, Carolina Poultry was processing up to 300, 000 chickens a week.

J. D. and LaVerna retired in 1981 and for the next years spent the winter months in Naples, FL. They were members of the Siler City Country Club. J. D. was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Siler City, starting to attend with his family in 1927. He served as a member of the Local Board of Administration at the church. He also served as a trustee at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, SC.

After the death of his wife LaVerna in 1991, in 1993 he married Audrey Iverson of Naples, FL. In 2005, J. D. and Audrey relocated to Ocala, FL.

J. D. was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, LaVerna, his parents and all 12 of his siblings. He is survived by his wife, Audrey, and a daughter Priscilla Sanders of Denton, TX, a son Rev. Fred (Sonnie) of Central, SC and a son Jerry (Betty) of Crescent City, FL. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Scott Sanders of Chicago, IL, Melanie Strickland of Cumming, GA and Allyson Andrews of Nashville, TN, four great-grandsons, Andy, Alex, Aaron and Hayden. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews living in the Siler City area.

The family will hold visitation at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City on Friday, August 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at First Wesleyan Church in Siler City on August 31 at 2 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at Kildee Wesleyan Church cemetery.

The family requests in place of flowers, memorials be made to the Andrews Family Scholarship at Southern Wesleyan University, 907 Wesleyan Drive, Central, SC 29630. This scholarship was established in 1991 and has been providing education with a Christian perspective for deserving young people.

SUSAN WICKER HAYMORE
Susan Wicker Haymore, 69, of East Sixth Street, Siler City died Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at her residence.

Mrs. Haymore was born in Iredell County on September 20, 1943, the daughter of Walter G. and Bertha (Harper) Wicker. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Siler City and a graduate of High Point Memorial School of Nursing, Class of 1964. Susan was very proud of her forty-four years of service in the nursing field. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters, Frank Wicker, Donald Wicker, Phoebe Hamer, Virginia “Jenny” Hudson and Walter Guy “Buck” Wicker, Jr.

Survivors include one daughter, Amy Teague and husband Joe of Snow Camp; two sons, Joey C. Hussey and wife, Christina Lundqvist of Greensboro, Robbie G. Hussey and wife, Tara of Bear Creek; one sister, Carol Johnson and husband, Donald of Siler City; grandchildren, Sebastian Lyndqvist, Gavin Teague, Claire Teague, Julia Teague, Hunter Hussey and Spencer Hussey.

The family will receive friends at the home of the son, Robbie and Tara Hussey, 1795 Oakley Church Road, Bear Creek.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

ROBERT ZEKE HILLIARD
Mr. Robert Zeke Hilliard, 76, of Siler City, passed away Wednesday, (08-14-2013) at Siler City Center.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, (08-17-2013) at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the Hilliard Family Cemetery.

Mr. Hilliard was a Chatham County native and a retired farmer. He attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Robert “Bob” and Salli P. Hilliard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harold Hilliard and Archie Hilliard.

Survivors include a son, Randy Hilliard of Siler City; brother, Roy Hilliard of Siler City; sisters, Juanita Lucas, Lenora Lucas, both of Siler City, Ezzie Smith, Geneva Beck, both of Bear Creek; and two grandchildren.

CHARLES LEVI CAVINESS
Mr. Charles Levi Caviness, 72, of Robbins, passed away Tuesday (08-13-2013) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, (08-17-2013) at 11 a.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel with Rev. Terry Warren officiating.

Mr. Caviness was a Moore County native and a self- employed logger. He was the son of the late Wess and Madie B. Caviness. He was a member of Unity Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Haithcox Caviness of the home; daughter, Brenda Maness of Seagrove; sister, Laverne Chriscoe of Robbins; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joyce-Brady Chapel, P.O. Box 89, Bennett, NC 27208to help with funeral expenses.

BABY MAGGIE CRAWFORD VICENTE
A memorial service was held for Baby Maggie Crawford Vicente on Wednesday, (08-21-2013) at 6 p.m. at Knotts & Son Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors include her parents, Alberto Vicente and Yolanda Crawford Vicente of Siler City; sister, Maira Crawford; and brothers, Fernanda Canales, Glovanny Vicente, and Ramon Vicente, all of the home.

KENNETH WARREN SCOTT
Kenneth Warren Scott, 54, of Pittsboro, died peacefully Friday, August 16, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his family and close friends.

A casual gathering outside to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 located at1291 River Forest Road Pittsboro.

Ken adored his sons and grandchildren and loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a remarkable man, loved by many. He was preceded in death by his father Durwood Scott

Ken is survived by his sons, Kevin Scott, Corey Scott, Alex Scott and their mother, Kim Williams Scott, all of Pittsboro; his mother, Kathryn Lloyd Scott of Chapel Hill; brother, Tommy Scott (Deanie) of Caldwell, brother, Billy Scott of Chapel Hill, sister, Janet Scott McFarland (Fred) of Chapel Hill; brother, Mike Scott of Chapel Hill, brother, Jeff Scott (Anna) of Pittsboro; granddaughters, Kenley Scott and Siann White of Pittsboro; nine nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to UNC Hospice.

Arrangements are under the care of American Cremation.

INFANT PARKER GREY MAULTSBY
Infant Parker Grey Maultsby, Sanford, died Monday, August 19, 2013 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

He is survived by his parents, Josiah and Laura (Clark) Maultsby, IV; one sister, Madelyn Maultsby of the home; maternal grandparents, Vernon and Doan Clark of Siler City; paternal grandparents, Nancy and Alex Maultsby of Zebulon; maternal great-grandparents, Frank and Barbara Clark of Siler City; paternal great-grandmother, Edna Lemmond of Laurinburg; maternal uncles, Steven and Matt Clark of Siler City; paternal aunts and uncles, Marybeth and Michael Lopez of Knightdale; cousins, Paige and Hanna Lopez of Knightdale; numerous great aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family received friends Wednesday, August 21, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 120 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City, with Rev. Jason Golden and Rev. Brian Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

DOROTHY KIDD HANCOCK MARTINDALE
Dorothy Kidd Hancock Martindale, 90, of Tom Hancock Road, Bear Creek, died Monday, August 19, 2013 at FirstHealth Hospice Palliative Care, Pinehurst.

Mrs. Martindale was born in Chatham County on May 23, 1923, the daughter of Rev. John C. and Lula (Caviness) Kidd. Dot was a homemaker and a member ofAntioch Baptist Church. She enjoyed entertaining, cooking for her family and friends, quilting, crocheting and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Thomas W. Hancock, Sr. and later, Floyd Martindale; her parents; son, Thomas Woodrow Hancock, Jr.; brothers, Charlie, Lewis, Henry, Norman and sisters, Margaret, Cornie and Cordia.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith H. Nall and husband Ritchie of Bear Creek, Diana H. Hornsby and husband Jim of Lake Wateree, SC; one son, Donnie Lee Hancock and wife Emily of Burlington; one sister, Johnsie K. Bouldin of Bennett; daughter-in-law, Lisa Sterling of Greensboro; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 22, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the home of Judith and Ritchie Nall, 774 Tom Hancock Road, Bear Creek.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston with Ritchie Nall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
