BETTE DRIVER TAYLOR
Houston, TX– Mrs. Bette Driver Taylor, 87, of Houston, TX died at her residence on Monday, (08-05-2013).

A graveside service was conducted at Alamance Memorial Park on Saturday, (08-10-2013) at 2 p.m..

A native of Fernandina Beach, FL, she was the wife of the late Kenneth Lee Taylor, Sr. and the daughter of Homer L. Driver and Thelma Lou Beck Driver, both deceased. She was a former employee with Bill’s Restaurant, Siler City, and a member of the Siler City Garden Club.

Bette is survived by her son, Kenneth Lee Taylor, II of their home in Houston, TX.

WILLIAM THOMAS “TOMMY” STONE
William Thomas “Tommy” Stone, 66, of Moncure, died Tuesday (08-06-2013) at the Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Stone was born February 26, 1947, the son of the late William Stone and Dolly Jordan Stone, both of whom are deceased.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Poe Stone of the home; daughters, Tracey Lynn McKinney, Amber Renee Burris, both of Concord; brother, Steve Stone of Sanford; and six grandchildren.

No flowers are requested, but memorial donations may be made to Haywood Independent Bible Church, PO Box 409, Moncure, NC 27559or to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Tommy.

DR. EDWARD THEODORE GORDON
Milton, MA- Edward Theodore Gordon was born March 4, 1923, in Charlestown, MA, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gordon. He was predeceased by his wife, Claire Braverman Gordon, brothers, Nathan, David, and sister, Celia.

Interment was held at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA.

Edward graduated from Boston English High School. He attended Tufts College and Tufts University School of Medicine. Following an internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, he pursued a residency in General Surgery at the University of Minnesota. In 1949, Dr. Gordon became the Chief of Surgical Services at the 7th Station Army Hospital in Trieste, Italy. Upon his return from Europe, he completed his surgical training at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Gordon practiced at Quincy City Hospital and Milton Hospital for over three decades, serving as Chief of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Michael Alan Gordon of Sanford, Steven Roger Gordon of Brattleboro, VT, and Dr. John David Gordon of Bethesda, MD; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

JOHNNIE ROBERT NEWELL
Johnnie Robert Newell, 73, of Goldston, died Wednesday (08-07-2013).

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, (08-09-2013), at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Newell was born in Chatham County, the son of the late John Joe Newell and Janie Bell Hicks Newell. He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Henry Macon Newell, and a sister, Littie Van Skiver.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Smith Newell; daughter, Wanda Lou Newell of Goldston; sisters, Bobbie Jean Barham and Eva Hicks Newell, both of Cameron; brothers, James Newell and Bill Newell, both of Cameron.

RUSSELL WAYNE HUSSEY
Russell Wayne Hussey, 60, of Robbins, died Sunday, 08-11-2013, at First Health Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Wayne was born December 18, 1952 to the late Russell and Inez Caviness Hussey. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church where he served on the Offering Committee and Baptismal Committee. He had recently retired from Moore County Public Works. He was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Julie Nicodemus Hussey, of the home; daughter, April Hussey Roberts of Robbins; son, Jonathan Hussey of Robbins; sister, Hilda Hussey Cockman of Robbins; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, (08-13-2013) at 3 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

The family requests memorials may be sent to Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund, 8454 Howards Mill Road, Bennett, NC 27208, or First Health Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

MARY ELIZABETH THOMPSON ELKINS
Mary Elizabeth Thompson Elkins, 69, of Siler City died Monday, (08-12-2013) at her residence.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, (08-14-2013) at 11 a.m. at Rocky River Friends Meeting with David Hobson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Elkins was born in Chatham County on August 19, 1943, the daughter of Lewis and Hattie (Lewis) Thompson. She was a graduate of Silk Hope School and Central Carolina Community College. She worked in the accounting office at Boling Chair, Inc., and later, established her own company, Professional Business Solutions. Mary was a member of Rocky River Friends Meeting where she served as recording clerk, assistant treasurer, and Sunday School teacher. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, William Lee Elkins and one brother, Harvey Lewis Thompson of Alabama.

THOMAS JOSEPH “TOM” DOYLE
Mr. Thomas Joseph “Tom” Doyle, 87, died (06-27-2013) in The Arbor at Galloway Ridge.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 3 o’clock, Thursday, (08-22-2013) from St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Scott E. McCue, VF, Pastor, will preside. Enurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Tom was born in New York City on December 21, 1925, the son of Joseph and May Egan Doyle. He served in the US Navy in both World War II and Korea. Tom received a business degree from Long Island University and an engineering degree from New York University. He worked as a diesel/industrial engineer before establishing a family business. He was active in St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.

Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Terrie Connolly Doyle. Following the service friends may visit at a reception in the church family life center.

Memorials may be given to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 for engraved brick pavers in Tom’s memory.

MELVIN AZELLE WILLIAMS
Mr. Melvin A. Williams, 57, of Pittsboro died Saturday, (08-10-2013) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, (08-15-2013) AT St. Andrews Congregational Christian Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Annette Green Williams of Pittsboro; son, Azelle Tywon Williams of Pittsboro; daughter, Kenyatta Shantel Williams of Greensboro; brothers, Sgt. Curtis Morrison of Fayetteville, Freeman Eddie Williams of Badin, Wilbert Lee Williams of Sanford, Alfonza Calvin Williams of Pittsboro; sister, Candy Moffitt of Raleigh; and one granddaughter.

The family greeted guests from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, (08-14-2013) at Knotts Funeral Home, Pittsboro.

DORIS M. GUTHRIE
Doris Guthrie, 72, of 2475 Redbud Road, Pittsboro died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Guthrie was born July 28, 1941, the daughter of Millard and Lula (Hicks) Maness. She was a member of Community Baptist Church until her illness confined her to the home. She worked in textiles and in a nursing home during her active years. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Guthrie; the father of her children, Dwight Moody; her parents, sisters, Eula Darr, Lessie Mote, Margaret Phillips; and brothers, JC and James Maness.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Moody of Bonlee, Michael Moody and wife Anna of Siler City; one daughter, Kay Spoon and husband Ricky of Pittsboro; one step-son, Dennis Guthrie and wife Donna of Siler City; step-daughters, Cheryl Scott and husband Larry of Robbins, Janet Lambert of Myrtle Beach; five brothers, Tom Maness and wife Brenda, Charlie Maness and wife Mae, all of Snow Camp, Gurney Maness and wife Ernestine, Earl Maness, all of Liberty, Junior Maness of Siler City; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doris also had a special sister-in-law, Maryland Lemon, who cared for her in the home, along with her granddaughter, Rachel Spoon.

The family received friends Tuesday, August 13, 2013 from 1:15-2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City with the funeral service immediately following at 2 p.m. in the Chapel, with Rev. Bill Browder officiating. A brief graveside service will follow at Hickory Mountain Baptist Church, weather permitting.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chatham County Animal Shelter or to Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund.

ARTHUR ALVIS RODGERS
Mr. Arthur Rodgers, 88, passed away at home, Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in Pittsboro.

A native of Chatham County, Arthur was born to the late Willie Joe Rodgers and Fannie Degraffenreidt. He attended Chatham High School in Siler City in the 1940’s. He left school early to join the U.S. Navy where he was stationed on the USS San Juan in the South Pacific. After WW II, Arthur returned to Chatham County and graduated high school. He was united in marriage for 62 years of love and devotion to the late Mary Dark. He retired from Townsend as a truck driver after 59 years of service. Arthur served the church as a steward, treasurer, usher, president of the senior choir, and groundskeeper for more than 30 years. He also was a founding member of Saint Paul’s Masonic Lodge #147, serving as Worshipful Master for several years. In addition, he helped found the Knights of Pythagoras through Saint Paul’s Lodge.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Rodgers was preceded in death by his son, Arthur Rodgers Jr. and brothers, Gaither, Willie, Jessie, Saul, and Charles.

Survivors include his sons, Brian Rodgers and wife Gloria of Pittsboro, William Rodgers of Pittsboro; his daughter, Hope Rodgers-Medina, and husband Daniel; grandchildren, Davida Rodgers and John Guerra, Sidney Alexander, Zachary Rodgers, Tressalyn Cordaro, Courtney Rodgers, and William Rodgers, Jr.; great-granddaughters, Jordyn Rodgers and Riley Guerra.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Anthony Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JOSEPH FREDRIC LEITCH, III
Mr. Joseph Fredric Leitch, III, 24, of Graham, died Monday, (07-29-2013), in Siler City.

The funeral was held at Moore’s Chapel Baptis Church on Friday, (08-02-2013) at 3 p.m. with Rev. Curtis Oakley officiating. Burial followed in Moore’s Chapel Cemetery.

Joseph was born in Alamance County on September 11, 1988. He was a full time student at Alamance Community College and attended Moore’s Chapel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gerald Lindley.

Survivors include his mother, Jamie Lindley Lamm (Jeff); father, Joseph Fredric “Freddie” Leitch, II (Cindy); sister, Stacey Lee Leitch; grandmother, Shirley Lindley; grandparents, Fred (Kay) Leitch; step-sister, Lacie Lamm; step-brothers, Justin Lamm, Luke Clark, all of Graham; and step-grandparents, James (Carol) Lamm.

Memorials may be made to Moore’s Chapel Baptist Church, 5750 Church Road, Graham, NC 27253or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

WALTER BEHRINGER
Walter Edward Behringer died Thursday, (08-01-2013), at Pittsboro Christian Village.

Memorial services will be held Friday, (08-09-2013) at 7 p.m. at Pittsboro Christian Village, and Saturday, (08-10-2013), at 10 a.m. at North Ridge Bible Chapel, 7100 Harps Mill Road, Raleigh.

For his service in the Marine Corps at Iwo Jima during WW II, he received a Purple Heart, and then served during the Korean War. Walter retired from IBM, and attended North Ridge Bible Chapel.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Carol Behringer; sons, Jeffrey Behringer, James Behringer; daughter, Jill Byrd and twin sister, Muriel Simanek.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsboro Christian Village, 1825 East St.Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation, Pittsboro.

CLYDE WILLIAM JOHNSON
Clyde William Johnson, 84, of Siler City died Monday, (08-05-2013) at his home.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, (08-08-2013) at 3 p.m. at Meroney United Methodist Church, with Rev. Troy Ed Brown officiating.

Mr. Johnson was born in Chatham County on March 21, 1929, the son of Jessie Lewis and Eleanor (Pugh) Johnson. He was a member of Meroney United Methodist Church and a self employed house painter. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary W. Johnson; grandson, Steven L. Johnson; his parents; brothers, Rev. J. L. Johnson, Elbert, Raymond, Hurley Johnson; sisters, Effie Johnson, Ruby Brewer, Mattie Belle Reeding and Carrie Lee Holt.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rachel (Jessup) Johnson; sons, Dean Johnson, Keith Johnson, both of Siler City; brother, Frank Reid Johnson of Kernersville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the family home.
