ARTHUR DONALD “DUCK” ANDREW

Arthur Donald "Duck" Andrew, 62, of 1296 Delphus Stinson Road, Goldston, died Sunday, December 25, 2011 at Randolph Health & Rehabilitation in Asheboro.

Mr. Andrew was born November 14, 1949, the son of Arthur Monroe and Grace Hicks Andrew. He was born in Chatham County, and was employed with Townsend Hatchery. Donald loved going to the mountains, drag racing, visiting his family, friends, and playing cards and golf. He was preceded in death by parents, Arthur Monroe Andrew and Grace Hicks Andrew; his brother, Lynne Andrew; sisters, Arlene A. Gilliland and Janice Andrew.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jackie (Gaines) Andrew of the home; brother, Glenne Andrew and wife, Anne of Sanford; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, December 27, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek, with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial was in Gaines Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The Duke Heart Center, 200 Trent Drive, Durham, NC 27710.

BETTY SUE FURR WILLIAMS

Betty Sue Furr Williams, 85, of 309 North Garden Avenue, Siler City died Friday, December 23, 2011 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mrs. Williams was born January 15, 1926, the daughter of Lewis W. and Nena (Holtzclaw) Furr. She was born in Mecklenburg County, worked as a key punch operator with J. P. Stevens Company and also with the American Red Cross in Charlotte. In her retirement years in Siler City, she enjoyed working at Chatham Trades. Betty was a member of the Siler City Presbyterian Church. Betty was very much loved and precious to her family, and a kind friend to all.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Williams Davis and husband, Steve of Siler City; one brother, Jon Furr and wife, Ann of Indian Trail; grandchildren, Matt Davis and wife, Sunny of Raleigh, Andy Davis and wife, Kimberly of Bear Creek, Molly Davis of Cary; great-grandchildren, Tally, Andrew, Baylor and Carson.

The family received friends before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at the Siler City Presbyterian Church. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Sue Flippin officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.

Memorials may be made to Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 West 3rd Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

HERMAN E. KENNEDY, JR.

Mount Airy – Herman E. Kennedy, Jr., 80, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, December 18, 2011 at his residence.

A native of Siler City, he was a son of the late Herman E. Kennedy, Sr. and Edna Jordan Kennedy. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Margaruite Brissett and Helen Neher, and brother-in-law, Glenn Neher.

Mr. Kennedy, was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and of the Baptist faith. His hobbies were gardening, growing Azaleas, cooking and hunting. He was a graduate of Oak Ridge Military Academy and North Carolina State University. He was a civil engineer for 35 years.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Jeanette Reese Kennedy; daughters, Deborah (Scott) Martin of Pilot Mountain, Carla (David) Harold of Mount Airy; son, Timothy R. Kennedy of the home; six grandchildren, Josh (Tiffany) Hiatt of Advance, Hannah (Jody) Edmonds of Mount Airy, Matt (Ashley) Hiatt of Mount Airy, Jennifer (Chris) McNeilus of Mebane, Ben Harold of Mount Airy and Charles Harold of Raleigh, five great-grandchildren; brother, John (Mary Alice) Kennedy of Siler City; sister, Hilda (Earl) Short of Siler City; brother-in-law, Roland (Bonnie) Reese of Weaverville; sister-in-law, Zora (Bob) Hays of Weaverville; special long time friends, Edd and Paula Buchanan of Black Mountain.

Graveside services and burial were held Tuesday, December 20 at 1 p.m. at Grandview Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Steve Greene officiating.

IOLA PILKINGTON WALLS

Iola Pilkington Walls, 83, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2011. Iola was born June 24, 1928 in Pittsboro, North Carolina. She lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and then moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida in 1964. Iola was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was married 59 years to Richard Walls who passed away in June, 2011.

She is survived by three children, Rich Walls, Jr., Deniese Billings and Debbie Dowds; her granddaughter, Danielle Dowds; and brother, Jimmy Pilkington of Pittsboro.

The family received friends Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Antioch Christian Church, 246 Antioch Christian Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Clark Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Foundation for Cancer Research, www.nfcr.org, Esophageal Cancer Research.

CHARLES NETTLES

Charles Nettles 39 of Sanford died Monday (12-19-2011) at Maple Grove Health and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held Friday, (12-23-2011) at 1:30 p.m. at Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery.

The wake will be held Thursday at Knotts & Sons Funeral Home in Siler City from 7 to 8 p.m.

SHANNON PERRY HALLMAN

Shannon Perry Hallman died from cancer at UNC Hospitals December 10, 2011. Shannon was born to Margaret Shannon and John Frank Hallman on August 15, 1935, in Union County, NC, and married Judith Huntress Hallman on June 3, 1961. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in June.

Shannon graduated from Monroe High School in 1953, where his friends called him Gatemouth and he became a cheerleader after breaking teeth playing football. He was an Eagle Scout, served in the US Army as a Cryptographer (1955-1960), earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1962, and completed some graduate work in Psychology. He worked in health research at UNC-Chapel Hill until retirement and, after retirement, as a dishwasher at the Carolina Coffee Shop, where he developed many more lasting friendships. And for about 20 years, he spent one or two days a week driving people to medical appointments for Transportation Services, Red Cross, Durham.

Shannon was a warm, caring, unique character and a life-long learner, who loved reading on the Internet as well as from books. His matter-of-fact explanations and observations always amazed and amused his friends. The Internet also sharpened his interest in art and history. During the 70s and 80s, Shannon was one of the regulars at Jeff's Confectionery (the local pub), where folks from all walks of life gathered for conversation, both erudite and mundane. He loved good conversation, good food, beer, wine, spices, cigars, unusual foods and cooking unusual dishes. He enjoyed solitude, nature, quality vs. quantity, unusual plants, simple beauty. He kept everything and could fix most anything, eventually, re-purposing things in his Rube Goldberg way.

MARY RACHEL HALL ALLRED

June 30, 1930 – December 15, 2011

Rachel went to be with her Lord and Savior after a hard fought battle with Alzheimers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer G. Hall, Sr. and Artis B. Hall. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Homer G. Hall, Jr. and a sister, Jacqueline H. Johnson. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Harold H. Allred and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Rachel was a graduate of Watts School of Nursing, UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing and earned her PHD in 1991 from Walden University. She taught nursing at UNC-Greensboro and upon retirement, she was appointed Assistant Professor Emeritus. Rachel received the NCAOHN "Nurse of the Year Award" in 1987. Rachel was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City where she was a member of the choir, a member of the home missions group, former deacon and taught the same Sunday School Class for over 30 years, which is now named for her. Among her other accomplishments, she was past president of the WMU, past president of Alpha Delta Kappa, previous Worthy Matron of the local Eastern Star Chapter, a member of the Daughters of the American Confederacy and a member of the local garden club, just to name a few of her activities. Rachel also served on the board of trustees to build the new Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Rachel was a faithful and loyal servant to God, her family and the community. Even after retirement she continued to serve others. She volunteered to administer free vaccines in the community to those less fortunate. She also could be found outside WalMart ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. She was truly loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.

The family received friends Saturday, December 17, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.

KALEN HAGEDORN

Kalen Hagedorn, age 25, of Yuba City, CA passed away December 8, 2011. He was born in St. Petersburg, FL, to the late Gary G. Hagedorn and Lisa Shoun Lyons. His father passed away when he was 6 years old in 1995. He is the 2nd of 3 boys.

Kalen was a senior airman and crew chief at Beale AFB. Hundreds of Airmen and Officers attended the memorial that the family was so graciously invited to attend. He had been deployed three times during his 4 years in the air force, twice to UAE and recently returned from Cypress.

Kalen attended Harrison Academy for the Performing Arts and Lakeland Senior High School in Lakeland, Florida where he grew up. He attended Skagit Valley College prior to joining the United States Air Force in 2007. He was also preceded in death by grandparents, Gerald H. and Sylvia S. Hagedorn; uncles, John L. Shoun, Timothy C. Shoun, and aunt Laura Hagedorn Lebo.

Survivors include grandparents, Rev J. L. and Raye Pilley Shoun of Siler City, formerly of LaFollette, TN; Momma, Lisa Shoun Lyons; brothers, Damien M. Hagedorn of Big Rapids MI, and A1C Jared O. Lyons of Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea; aunt, Tina Shoun Gibbs and husband, uncle Michael Gibbs, cousin, Will Gibbs, all of Ft. Worth TX; uncle, James M. Shoun and wife, aunt Donna Daniels Shoun of Knoxville, TN; uncle, Peter J. Shoun, and wife aunt, Penny M. Shoun and cousins, Joey, Abby, Logan and Cassidy Shoun, all of Siler City; aunt, Emily Morton Shoun of Clinton, TN; aunt Anita Bernal Shoun of Miami, FL; uncle Christopher J Hagedorn, and cousin, Trevor Hagedorn, both of Snohomish, WA; uncle Bob Lebo, aunt, Michelle Belzile of Renton WA; cousins, Marlese Carroll of Hayward, CA, Mia Sheppard of Oregon, Colleen Pringle of Adelaide, Australia, and Christina Pringle Keller of Clinton, WA.

Graveside service and interment was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, at Bakers Forge Cemetery with full military honors.

LINDA ANN COWAN WARFFORD

Linda Ann Cowan Warfford, 67, of 1017 Cliftwood Drive, Siler City died Sunday, December 18, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Warfford was born in Bertie County on December 30, 1943 to Robert Lansing and Mavis Joyner Cowan. She was a 1962 graduate of Ahoskie High School and a 1964 graduate of Chowan University. Linda continued her education receiving degrees from the University of Chapel Hill (1965) and Mars Hill College (1967). In 1972 she received a Masters of Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and also received Specialist in Education in 1987 from Appalachian State University.

Linda began her teaching career in Virginia with the Hampton City Schools teaching fifth grade (1967-1968). She moved to North Carolina, teaching second grade with Montgomery County Schools (1968-1969); serving as Elementary Supervisor from 1969-1972. She taught math from 1972-1976 in the Asheboro City Schools. Linda came to the Chatham County Schools in 1976 working as Elementary Supervisor (1976-1993), Assistant Superintendent (1994-1998) and retiring in 2010 as Associate Vice President of Accreditation, AdvancED (SACS) (1999-2010).

During her career Linda received many honors and served with several professional, charitable and social organizations. Among her honors were Board Member of Friends of Teacher Education, Kentucky Colonel, President, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Distinguished Alumni Award (Chowan University), Outstanding Young Educator, Teacher of the Year (Asheboro City Schools, 1976). Linda served as a Member of the International Board of ASCD, on the Board of Directors of NCASCD, and a member of the Board of Directors of NCASA. Linda was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa-Alpha Zeta Chapter, the Siler City Arts Council and the BPW of Siler City. Linda was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City where she served as a Deacon and Youth Sunday School teacher. She loved to play bridge, collect Charlie Brown memorabilia and buying bird houses.

She is survived by her husband, James (Jimmy) Franklin Warfford; daughters, Jenny Lind Warfford DeWeese and husband, Brad of Lake Placid, New York and Mary Beth Warfford of Durham; granddaughters, Addalyn Grace DeWeese and Brinley Rose DeWeese; twin brother, Robert Lansing (Lanny) Cowan, Jr. and wife, Nancy of Harrellsville; sisters, Mary Susan (Sue) Gray and husband, Dick, of Candler, and Laurie Beth Myers and husband, Steve, of Candler; two nieces, Stephanie Gray and Joyner Myers.

The family received friends Tuesday, December 20, 2011 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344. A celebration of Life service was held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Siler City, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart, Rev. Jim Wall and Dwight Hooker officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

ANTHONY (ANDY) LAVERNE HOLT

Anthony (Andy) Leverne Holt, 44, of 1530 West Raleigh Street, Siler City died Monday, December 19, 2011 at his home. Mr. Holt was born May 24, 1967, son of Earl (Punk) and Frances Caviness Spivey.

Andy was born in Orange County, a 1985 graduate of Chatham Central High School and was employed with Pallet One. He was of the Baptist faith, loved riding his motorcycle, doing landscaping, carpentry and helping people. Andy was a well known mechanic around town, loved classic cars and country music. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl (Punk) Holt and a sister, Cynthia (Cindy) Thomas.

He is survived by his mother, Frances Caviness Spivey of Bear Creek; two brothers, Michael Holt and wife, Lisa of Goldston, Chad Spivey and friend, Angie of Bear Creek; son, Chris; special friend, Patti S. Thomas and her son, Travis of Siler City.

The family received friends Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. Other times, they were at the home of his mother, Frances Spivey, 3960 Bear Creek Church Road, Bear Creek.

The memorial service will be Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church, 1278 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Bear Creek with Rev. David Hicks, Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Kirk Parrish officiating.

ERNEST JACKSON HORTON
May 10, 1930 – December 9, 2011

Apex – Ernest Jackson Horton, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2011, with his loving daughter by his side.

Ernest was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and brother-in-law. He was a lifelong faithful member and leader at Bells Baptist Church. After serving his country honorably in the United States Army, Ernest worked for the United States Postal Service in Apex and retired after 25 years of service. He was an award-winning wood craftsman as well as an avid gardener.

Ernest was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Copeland Horton, earlier this year; his son, Barry Jackson Horton; and his parents, Andrew and Vallie Holloman Horton.

Left to cherish Ernest’s memory is his loving daughter, Angela Horton Joyner and her husband, David; a daughter-in-law, Terri Horton; grandchildren, Seth Horton and his wife, Katie, Aaron Horton and wife, Heather, Alyson Joyner Shumate and her husband, Jordan, Ryan Joyner and his wife, Jessica; and great-granddaughters, Willow Horton and Lily Grace Horton. He also leaves behind a sister, Mable Cross of Portsmouth, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Jeannine Dollar, a sister-in-law, Sharon Martin and her husband, Craig; a brother-in-law, Ronald Copeland and his wife Jean, all of Apex; and many extended family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

, , The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Bells Baptist Church in Apex from 6 to 8 p.m. A service to celebrate his remarkable life will be held Friday, December 16, 2011 at Bells Baptist Church at 11 a.m. His cremains, along with those of his beloved wife, will be committed to their final resting place at the Bells Baptist Church Cemetery following the service.

Flowers are welcome or the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Bells Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the Fellowship Hall Expansion Fund, 1274 Farrington Road, Apex, NC 27523.

Arrangements for Mr. Horton are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.
