SHARITY (KATHY ANN) FAITH ROSS
KathyAnn, passed 14 August, 2011 with her mother and sisters by her side at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. after a long battle with cancer.
KathyAnn was born 8 May, 1958 in Chatham County. She served in the United States Army for five years with an Honorable Discharge. She attended Howard University in Washington, DC. KathyAnn resided in Washington, DC for many years.
She enjoyed reading her Bible and sharing her thoughts and prayers for others on paper.
Her interest was advocating for those who didn’t have a voice. She worked as a volunteer for many civil causes.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Thomas Currie, Sr. and her brother, Paul Thomas Currie, Jr.
KathyAnn is survived by her mother, Mary Ella Alston; her daughter, Victoria Mary-Katherine Currie; her son, Hunter Petit; her sisters, Tammie Currie, LaDona Currie-Andrews; and a niece, Austin R. Andrews.
Arrangements are with Sanford Carter Funeral Home, Hinesville, GA.
OLLIE FRANCES PHILLIPS GAINES
Ollie Frances Phillips Gaines, 102, of Bear Creek died Saturday, (08-20-2011) at her home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, (08-23-2011) at 3 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Kirk Parrish, Rev. Darrell Garner and Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Gaines was born July 23, 1909, the daughter of William Atlas and Losie Cox Phillips. She was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker. She was the oldest member of Bear Creek Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. Ollie was preceded in death by her husband, Iley M. Gaines and two grandsons, Timmy Gaines and Bill Phillips.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise G. Gilchrist of Bear Creek; sons Ray Phillips of Bear Creek, Lester Gaines of Siler City, Ricky Gaines of Bear Creek; sister, Lottie Ellington of Snow Camp; eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

LONZO RICHARD MARSH
Mr. Lonzo Richard Marsh, 62, of Siler City died Friday (08-12-2011) at E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (08-16-2011) at Wesley Chapel F.C.C., with Rev. Barry R. Gray officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Marsh graduated from Chatham County Schools, served in the U.S. Army, worked at Carolina Poultry and Boise Cascade In Moncure.
Survivors include Sandra Mauldin; son, Wesley Marsh, both of the home; sisters, Mrs. Odessa Person, Mrs. Lyde Cheek, Mrs. Mexie Watson, all of Siler City; brothers, Mr. Ernest Marsh of Siler City and Mr. John Henry March of Pittsboro.
ARTHUR LEE FARRINGTON
Mr. Arthur Lee Farrington, 66, of Pittsboro died Thursday (08-11-2011) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (08-16-2011) at Alston Chapel U.H. Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Farrington was educated in the Alamance and Chatham County Schools. He was a member of Alston Chapel Church, St. Mark Lodge #829, Worshipful Master, Khalif Temple #144 and was past Worthy Patron of St. Thomas Order of the Eastern Star #644.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Harris Farrington of the home; sons, Frederick “Bo” of the home, Kelvin Harris; sisters, Ada Thomas of Brooklyn, NY, Erma Farrington of Pittsboro, Carolyn Farrington of Durham; and one granddaughter.
IONIE TAYLOR PUGH
Mrs. Ionie Taylor Pugh, 85, of Pittsboro died Saturday (08-13-2011) at Laurels of Chatham.
Funeral services were held Wednesday (08-17-2011) at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Pugh was a native of Chatham County and a member of Mitchell Chapel Church.
Survivors include son, Frank Taylor; daughter, Mary Thomas, both of Pittsboro; sisters, Bernice Scurlock of Pittsboro, Fay Crump of Yonkers, NY; brothers, J.D. Taylor; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
HELEN ANNA TILGNER
Helen Anna Tilgner, 89, formerly of Pittsboro, died Sunday, (08-21-2011) at U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
She is survived by her daughter Diane Marie Tilgner of Pittsboro; son Richard James Tilgner of New Mexico; and one grandson.
Mrs. Tilgner is preceded in death by her husband Robert Tilgner, her parents, Louis Lingner and Marie Dragner Lingner, and five siblings.
Memorial services in Pittsboro and Pennsylvania will be announced at a later date.

JOHN ISON (J.I.) SMITH
John Ison (J.I.) Smith, 91, of Liberty died Tuesday (08-16-2011) at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday (08-20-2011) at Edwards Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Lamont Stokes officiating. Burial followed at Gilmore Memorial Park.
Mr. Smith was a native of Randolph County, a member of Edwards Grove Church, and a plumber by trade.
Survivors include daughters, Lucy P. Jones of Richmond, VA, Renae Smith of Ramseur; sister, Balfour Staley of Staley; and one granddaughter.
J. RONNIE HICKS
J. Ronnie Hicks, 64, of Siler City died Monday (08-22-2011) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday (08-25-2011) at 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Womack Keck officiating.
Mr. Hicks was a Lee County native and a truck driver for Lucks Inc. He was an Army Reserves veteran and a member of Brookdale Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret Hicks; and brothers, Ricky and David Hicks.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Moody Hicks of the home; brothers, Michael Hicks, Jerry Hicks both of Siler City, Jimmy Hicks of Snow Camp; sisters, Sybil Warren of Siler City, Becky Vess of Rock Hill, SC, Debbie Marley and Sandy Maness both of Bear Creek.
Visitation was held Wednesday (08-24-2011) from 6-7:30 p.m at Joyce-Brady Chapel and other times at the home.
ELIZABETH “BETTY” BONFANTI
Elizabeth “Betty” Bonfanti of Pittsboro passed away peacefully on August 11, 2011 in Siler City. She was 89 years old.
Funeral services were held at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Pittsboro, followed by a private burial at Blue Heron Farm in Chatham County.
Betty is survived by her son, Bruce Saunders and daughter-in-law, Susanne Saunders of Pittsboro; grandchildren Carmen Saunders of New York, NY, Janine Saunders of New York, NY; her brother, Matthew Faenza of Warren, Michigan; and her sisters, Ida Goff of Hudson, NY and Ann Pope of Dallas, Texas.
JOHN LEWIS OLDHAM
John Lewis Oldham, 77, of 573 Henry Oldham Road, Bear Creek died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Mr. Oldham was born February 10, 1934, the son of Henry Louis and Mattie (Fisher) Oldham. He was a native of Chatham County and a member of Bethany Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class, he had served as a deacon and was always there to open the church, keeping the heat and air and the sound system working. John was a retired mechanic and had also worked with the Chatham County Schools as a gas delivery driver. He enjoyed working on race cars, mowing his yard and being outside. John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Louis and Mattie Fisher Oldham; brother, J. B. Oldham, Sr. and sister, Gladys Womble.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle (Patterson) Oldham of the home; son, Greg L. Oldham and wife, Angie of Carthage; grandsons, Josh and Cristian Oldham; four sisters, Grace Oldham Dowdy of Bear Creek, Frances Oldham Johnson of Bear Creek, Mabel Oldham Lemons of Bear Creek, Inez Hough Dowd and husband, Dewey of Siler City; and one brother, Eugene F. Oldham and wife, Janice of Bear Creek.
The family received friends Tuesday, August 23, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, 503 Alton King Road, Gulf with Rev. Womack Keck, Rev. David Hicks and Rev. Derrick Baker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
RACHEL SPENCE BROOKS
Rachel Lee Spence Brooks, 90, died Sunday, August 21, 2011 in Siler City. A native of Randolph County, she was born November 17, 1920, to Jennie Finison Spence and Ralph Lee Spence and devoted her life to her family and education.
She graduated from Siler City High School in 1937 as Valedictorian of her class and from Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1941. She married Ernest Edwards Brooks in 1944 and was widowed in 1995.
She was a long-time teacher in the public schools, retiring as a librarian at the Paul Braxton Elementary School in Siler City in 1977. She remained an enthusiastic reader her entire life and possessed an unwavering curiosity. She enjoyed a long, active retirement, which included many days spent on the North Carolina coast with her family and the births of four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Brooks was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City for over 65 years and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Alpha Delta Kappa teachers' sorority.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, August 24 at 11 a.m. at Siler City First United Methodist Church following a 10 a.m. visitation at the church. The Reverend Clyde Denny conducted the service. Burial followed at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Nancy Spence Sizemore and Doris Spence Albright. She is survived by son Steven E. Brooks and wife, Jennie, of Durham; daughter Sara Brooks Strassle and husband, Lyle, of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Rachel Catherine Campbell and husband, Christopher, Spence Brooks O'Neill and husband, James, Ernest Hunter Brooks, and Anna Brooks Creagh and husband, Theodore Slater; two great-grandchildren, Frank Brooks O'Neill and Adam Brooks Campbell; two step-grandchildren, Karen Strassle Skoglund and Ryan Strassle; and a half-brother, Dwight Spence.

ROLAND PERCY EUBANKS
Mr. Roland Percy Eubanks, 86, died Wednesday (08-10-2011) at his home in Bynum.
Mr. Eubanks’ wishes were for a private burial in Rock Springs Baptist Church cemetery, and his request will be honored.
A Chatham County native, Mr. Eubanks was born September 25, 1924 to Roy Lee and Fleta Moore Eubanks. A veteran of World War II, he spent his life working as a self-employed building contractor. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mozzell Perry Eubanks; son, Marvin Wayne Eubanks; grandson, Darryl Scott Johnson; and five siblings.
Survivors include his daughter Shirley Johnson of Chapel Hill; sister, Ivie Marie Cooper of Bynum; one grandson and two great-grandsons.
