HENRY (HANK) GEST

Henry (Hank) Gest made friends everywhere – at the hardware store, in restaurants and on tennis courts – and ended up a mentor to most who met him. Friends, family and acquaintances regularly sought his friendship and advice for resolving business and management issues, improving their tennis game, repairing broken furniture, and coping with adversity. Even during a routine annual medical exam, one of his doctors sought his advice on the best way to expand her medical practice.

Henry died July 8 at his beloved summer cottage in Traverse City, Mich., surrounded by family and friends who had known him for nearly all of his 78 years. A competitor to the end, he battled idiopathic interstitial pulmonary fibrosis for six years, living three years longer than doctors expected.

Born and raised on Grandin Road in Cincinnati, Ohio, Henry was graduated from Miami University of Ohio, and worked all over the country for Champion Paper and, later, Nationwide Papers, living in San Francisco, Calif., Cincinnati; Wilmette, Ill.; Annapolis, Md.; and Wilton, Ct.; before retiring to Pittsboro, N.C. Outside of work, Henry was a devoted father and husband, a regular Mr. Fix-it and avid tennis player. He served as President of the Wilton Riding Club in Wilton, Ct., Vice Chairman of the Wilton Planning and Zoning Commission, board member (on three occasions) of the Neahtawanta Resort Association in Traverse City, Mi., and member of the Board of Directors for the Executive Service Corps of the Greater Triangle in North Carolina.

Henry didn’t believe in excuses or regrets. He believed in making tomorrow better than today and gracefully learning lessons from defeat or mistakes. He taught himself to play tennis when his parents couldn’t afford lessons and became so good that when he joined the Army he joined the tennis team. He always had a kind word and a knack at knowing what to say to dissolve tension so that people would not take themselves or a particular situation too seriously. He also loved a good joke, the sillier, the better, and especially if it meant surreptitiously placing a Whoopee cushion on his father-in-law’s chair or replacing the Thanksgiving turkey with a rubber chicken.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; son Donald, daughter-in-law Kristen and grandsons Collin and Finn; daughter Emily, son-in-law David Sheehan and grandson Emmett; and his sister Emily Todd and her family. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Gest, and mother Emily (Lea) Gest. His remains will be interred during a family service at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
