GEORGE JUNIOR THRIFT

George Junior Thrift, 86, of Siler City died Tuesday, (05-31-2011) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

A graveside service was held Friday, (06-02-2011) at 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Keith Johnson officiating.
Mr. Thrift was born November 25, 1924, the son of George W. and Julia (Creed) Thrift. He was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of the N. C. Agriculture School, and a member of Bible Baptist Church. He was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific, retired from Hadley-Peoples and later worked with Central Carolina Farmers Exchange and Ace Hardware. He was preceded in death by a son, Arliss E. Thrift, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Hicks Thrift; daughter, Elizabeth (Lib) Thrift Jones of Siler City; sister, Alice T. Kidd of Pittsboro; brother, Vernon Thrift of Moncure; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

BARBARA JEAN DICKERSON FOURSHEE

Barbara Jean Dickerson Foushee, 55, of Asheboro, died Saturday, (06-04-2011) at Ran-dolph Health & Rehab.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Foushee was born July 18, 1955, the daughter of Thomas and Gertrude (Jones) Dickerson. She was a native of Granville County and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Foushee; daughters, Michelle Harris of Oxford, Jessica Foushee of Kittrill; sons, Brian Searcy of Siler City, Jeremy Foushee of Sanford, Chadwick Harris of VA; father, Thomas Dicker-son of Sanford; brother, Dale Dickerson of Burlington; and eleven grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (06-08-2011) from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

KATHY CHARLENE NEAL MARKS

Kathy Charlene Neal Marks of Burlington, formerly of Pittsboro, died Saturday (05-28-2011).

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, (06-03-2011) at Gum Springs Baptist Church in Moncure.

Mrs. Marks is the daughter of Hershell Jean House and the late Kenneth W. Neal.

Surviving in addition to her mother are sons, Samuel H. Johnson of Burlington, Rodney W. Johnson of Chapel Hill; sisters, Cynthia N. Crabtree of Cameron, Deanna Glosson of Pittsboro; brothers, Kenneth W. Neal, Jr. of Hawaii, Karl D. Neal of Cary, Joel B. Neal of Pittsboro; stepmother, Victoria Blackmon of Pittsboro; and one grandson.

HENRY J. BLAND, SR.

Mr. Henry J. Bland, Sr., 88, of Pittsboro died Friday, (05-27-2011) at the Veteran’s Hospital in Durham.

Funeral services were held Saturday (06-04-2011) at 4 p.m. at Mt. Sinai AME Church, with Rev. Phillip Lynch officiating. Burial followed at Pittsboro Cemetery.

Mr. Bland was a member of Mt. Sinai A.M.E. Church, and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He worked at Horton High School and retired from Chatham Mills.

Survivors include daughter, Mrs. Judith Thompson; son, Henry Bland, Jr.; sisters, Lilla B. Turner, Sophia B. Lynn, both of Pittsboro; brother, Jacob Bland of Bronx, NY; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

MRS. MARY B. NEWBY

Mrs. Mary B. Newby, 73, of Siler City died Monday (06-06-2011) at U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

funeral service will be held Friday (06-10-2011) at 2 p.m. the First Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Surviving are her children, Robert “Doug” Newby, Rachel Marsh, Robin Blackwell, Keith Newby, Sherry Lynn Newby, Michael Newby, Eddie Newby, Vernon New-by; and sister, Lillie Currie.

BARBARA JEAN HEILIG HICKS

Barbara Jean Heilig Hicks, beloved mother and grandmother, went home to be with her precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, May 31, 2011, at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation. Barbara was preceded in death by her wonderful husband of 51 years Charles, her parents, Leo F. and Sara Mae Foust Heilig, brother, W. D. Heilig; and sister-in-law, Brenda R. Heilig.

Barbara was a member of Moon's Chapel Baptist Church where she was an active member until she was no longer able. Barbara worked at Mr. T's Restaurant, Randy's Restaurant and Carolina Stockyard Restaurant. She was a member of the Hoe'n Hope Garden Club. Barbara loved to bake and decorate cakes for the public for many years. She loved to watch hummingbirds and work in her flowers.

She is survived by three daughters, Denise H. Suits and husband, John, Gay Hicks and Cathy H. Fields; four grandchildren, Matt Phillips, Brandon Fields, Cassie Suits and Chris Suits; special friends, Larry Phillips, Jeff Brunsman, Alex Brunsman, Hanna Brunsman and Haylee Brunsman; sisters, Martha H. Stout (Ondre), Becky H. Kidd (Buster), Betty Jo H. Frazier (David), Brenda H. Smith (David); brothers, Bobby Heilig, Tommy Heilig (Connie), Billy Heilig (Patti); and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Wednesday, June 1, 2011 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home and at other times, at the home of Denise Suits, 2133 Stockyard Road, Staley. The funeral was held Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Faw officiating.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Research, Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Land Fund or the Chatham County Council on Aging.

EFFIE BESSIE JOHNSON

Effie Bessie Johnson, 91, of 5227 Castle Rock Farm Road, Pittsboro died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Alamance Regional Hospital, Burlington.

Mrs. Johnson was born November 26, 1919, the daughter of Jesse L. and Eleanor (Pugh) Johnson. She was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Bonlee High School, and a member of Center United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class and a the U.M.W. She was a very giving person who loved people and visiting with them. Effie enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning and cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband, Junie Johnson, her parents, brothers and sisters, Carrie Lee Holt, Elbert and Raymond Johnson, Mattie Belle Redding, Ruby Brewer and Hurley Johnson.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan Johnson Jones and husband, Farrell of Pittsboro; brothers, Rev. Jesse L. Johnson and wife, Virginia of Charlotte, Frank Reid Johnson of Kernersville, Clyde W. Johnson and wife, Rachel of Siler City; grandchildren, Traci J. Rottmann and husband, Mark of Wilmington, Brett F. Jones and wife, Kenzie of West End; great-grandchildren, Lawson and Ava Rottmann; sisters-in-law, Hazel Johnson of Siler City, Myrl Johnson of Pittsboro; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Friday, June 3, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Center United Methodist Church, 9204 Center Church Road, Snow Camp with Rev. Ross Carter officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

HENRY HUNTER DUNLAP, JR.

Henry Hunter Dunlap, Jr., 77, of 88 Augusta Lane, Siler City, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mr. Dunlap was born July 28, 1933, the son of Henry H. and Marie (Phillips) Dunlap. He was a native of Chatham County and a graduate of Durham High School. He was a 1955 graduate of the UNC School of Pharmacy where he served as president of the Senior Class and President of Phi Delta Ki Fraternity. He was a devoted booster of UNC athletics, a Rams Club member and supporter of the UNC Educational Foundation. Henry was a member and past president of the Siler City Rotary Club, served as co-chairman of the Siler City Rotary Bazaar, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Siler City Jaycees and received the 1967 Outstanding Young Man of the Year. He was past president of the Siler City Country Club and was active in the Democratic Party. He served for 24 years as a Chatham County Commissioner of which two terms he served as chairman. He was a member for over 50 years of the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge #143 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Scottish Rites and 32nd Degree at Greensboro and Oasis Shrine of Charlotte. In 1991 he was awarded the Community Service Award by the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association. The county commissioners honored him by naming the Pittsboro office of the Chatham County Health Department the Henry Hunter Dunlap, Jr. Building. He was raised in the Bonlee area where his grandfather, Isaac Hunter Dunlap, established the Bonlee Baptist Church and with his brother, John, founded the Bonlee & Western Railroad. Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Beaty Dunlap and parents, Henry Hunter and Marie Phillips Dunlap.

He is survived by his wife, Martha (Smith) Dunlap; one son, Isaac Hunter Dunlap and wife, Barbara Jill Dunlap of Macomb, Ill; step-daughter, Ann Smith Zumbach and husband, Scott of Powder Springs, GA; granddaughters, Laura Katherine and Sarah Elizabeth Dunlap; step-granddaughters, Jessica Rae and Audra Jade Zumbach.

The family received friends Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 2- 3:15 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 North 2nd Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites followed in Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek.

JOHNNY LINDLEY

Johnny Lindley, 78, of 1800 Johnny Lindley Road, Snow Camp died Monday, June 6, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. Lindley was born July 17, 1932, the son of Clyde and Mary Mae (Marshall) Lindley. He was a native of Chatham County, a member of South Fork Friends Meeting and a dairy farmer. Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Fox Lindley; his parents; sister, Mary Edith Teague; and brother, Edwin Lindley.

He is survived by one daughter, Anita L. Naderi and husband, Ray of Houston, TX; three sons, Sherrill Lindley and wife, Marla of Pittsboro, Hal Lindley of Siler City, Mike Lindley of Siler City; grandchildren, Alyce Lindley, Michael Lindley, Mary Blake Lindley Needham, Jerrod Lindley, Justin Lindley, Sarah Naderi; and a sister-in-law, Polly Lindley of Greensboro.

The family received friends Tuesday, June 7, 2011 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 2 p.m. at South Fork Friends Meeting, 359 South Fork-Bethel Road, Snow Camp with Andrew Needham officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JERRY W. FESMIRE

Jerry W. Fesmire, 61, of Pine Knoll Shores, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Carteret General Hospital.

Mr. Fesmire was a Captain with US Airways since 1981. He had a great passion for fishing and flying.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Edward Hill Friends Church, with Pastor Josh Conrad officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will schedule a memorial service at a later date in Morehead City.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Gordon Fesmire of the home; mother, Kathryn Fesmire of Bear Creek; daughter, Terri Fesmire-Kennedy and husband Jimmy of Newport; sisters, Sandy Oldham and husband Marty of Bear Creek, Cathy Layton of Liberty; brother, Johnny Fesmire and wife Teresa of Charlotte; several nieces and nephews; and his devoted comfort dog, Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristy Fesmire.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home in Bennett, and at other times, at the home of his mother, Kathryn Fesmire, 215 Elmer Moore Road, Bear Creek.

POLLY DARDEN MOODY

Polly Darden Moody of Siler City, died Sunday, June 5, 2011. She was the daughter of Paul and Mary Darden and is survived by her husband, Ben Moody of Siler City, and one daughter, Lucinda Moody Chreitzberg of Lake Norman. Mrs. Moody and her husband were living in Concord, at Concord Place.

Mrs. Moody was a retired secretary and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City. She was a member and past president of the Friendship Sunday School Class, had served as superintendent of Sunday School, and was a charter member of the hand bell choir. She loved playing games on her computer, especially bridge, and she met friends from all around the world playing cards.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, PO Box 212, Siler City, NC 27344.

STEVE L. WHITT

Steve L. Whitt, 65, of Hanover, VA, originally of Siler City, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 3, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kay Timberlake Whitt; two children, Mark S. Whitt and Krystie Whitt Buchanan and husband, Buck; two grandchildren, Kayleigh and Emily Buchanan; brothers, Nelson Whitt and wife, Margie and Danny Roberts and wife, Barbara; sister-in-law, Carole Timberlake; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Steve was retired from the Richmond Police Department, a member of John Marshall Lodge #2 Fraternal Order of Police and the Richmond Retired Police Officers Association, serving as past president of both organizations.

Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where the family received friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Interment was at Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Hanover Christian School, 10058 Chamberlayne Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
