KELLY GENE BROWN

Kelly Gene Brown, 64, of Bartlett, TN died Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Select Hospital in Bartlett.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Church of God Cemetery in Hamlet, NC with Pastor Alex Tyler and Pastor James Lanter officiating.

Mr. Brown was born September 19, 1946, a native of Elbow Lake, MN. He retired from Heritage Concrete in Sanford, and was owner of Wounded Knee Hunting Preserve in Bennettsville, SC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Robinson Brown.

Survivors include sons, Phillip Iott of San Francisco, CA, Doug Iott (Brenda) of Gastonia, Randy Iott (Mechelle) of Bennettsville, SC; daughter, Hope Goldston (Eric) of Siler City; and grandchildren, Lauren Iott and Nikki Goldston, both of Siler City; two great-grandchildren; and god-daughter, L’oreal Jones.

SUSAN SMITH BRAXTON

Mrs. Susan Smith Braxton, 54, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, (04-26-2011) at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m Friday, (04-29-2011) at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Priestaff and Rev. Ray Gooch presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Siler City November 14, 1956, Susan was the daughter of Paris Hurley “Red” Smith and Arlene Beverly Smith. Formerly of the Pittsboro area, Susan was a retired insurance processing technician, and member of Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Pittsboro.

Survivors include her sons, Brian Braxton of Raleigh; Christopher Scott Braxton of Clayton; father, “Red” Smith of Star; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Wayne Braxton, Jr., and her mother.

LAWRENCE “RED” BURNETTE

Mr. Lawrence “Red” Burnette, 94, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, (04-27-2011) at Chapel Hill Health & Rehab.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (04-30-2011) from Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery.

Born February 24, 1917 in Chatham County, he was the son of Ralph Bynum Burnette and Flossie Griffin Burnette. He served in the US Army during World War II. Mr. Burnette was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Pittsboro, and a retired police officer from the UNC at Chapel Hill Campus Police Department.

Surviving are his daughters, Robbin Taylor and Cheryl Hains, both of Pittsboro; son, Christopher Burnette of Pittsboro; and six grandchildren.

WAYMON VANCE PUGH, SR.

Waymon Vance Pugh, Sr. 74, of Ramseur died Sunday, (05-01-2011) at Duke University Medical Center.

Mr. Pugh was a native of Randolph County and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was retired from Klaussner Furniture and was formerly employed with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Pugh of the home; son, Vance Pugh of Ramseur; stepchildren, Shaun Hanson, Adric Hanson, and David Hanson all of Ramseur; brother, Wiley Vernon Pugh of Siler City; sister, Susan White of Trinity; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

MAGERLINE CARTER

Magerline Carter, 100, of Siler City died Thursday (04-28-2011) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held Monday (05-02-2011) at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Arnold Headen officiating. Burial followed at First Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Chatham County, she was a retired homemaker and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church.

No immediate survivors.

MARY HELEN STUTTS

Mary Helen Stutts, 71, of 57 Stone Street, Siler City died Monday, April 25, 2011 at her residence.

Ms. Stutts was born February 3, 1940, the daughter of Addison and Mattie Thelma (Gaines) Stutts. She was a native of Chatham County, attended Gaines Grove Primitive Baptist Church, was employed by Chatham Trades for 29 years and enjoyed playing Bingo. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Cullum Stutts and a sister, Erma Truelove.

She is survived by four sisters, Mildred G. Hart of Siler City, Blanche S. Birchett of Siler City, Virginia S. Birchett of Mebane, Alice; and one brother, Ralph Gaines and wife, Carolyn of Asheboro; several special nieces and nephews and special friends, the staff of Chatham Trades.

The family received friends Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jimmy Gray and Dan Stoupe officiating. Burial followed in Gaines Grove Cemetery, Goldston.

Memorials may be made to Gaines Grove Cemetery, C/O Lucy Gaines, 137 Oren Gaines Road, Goldston, NC 27252; Hospice of UNC, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or Chatham Trades, 909 Austin Bridge Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

ZOHARETTA L. FOUSHEE

Zoharetta L. Foushee passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Zoharetta loved traveling in the United States and abroad, having visited 13 different countries, Africa, Europe and South America. She was an accomplished artist in Oriental Brush Art whose works were displayed throughout North Carolina. She loved entertaining her friends and family with cookouts and home dinner parties. Her greatest delight was the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Capehart officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.

The family received friends Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home.

Zoharetta was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Foushee.

Surviving is her daughter, Faye F. Ward (Jerry); son, William Thomas Foushee (Dianne); granddaughter, Dawn W. Elkins; grandsons, Thomas Foushee, Grant Foushee and Jeff Weisner; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to West Chatham Food Pantry.

Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty had the honor of serving the Foushee Family.

FREDA WILLAMAE ZAGURSKI

Freda Willamae Queor Zagurski, 84 was born May 29 1926 in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Freda who was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior April 30, 2011. She attended Rocky River Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Preceding her in death are her husband, Joseph Zagurski and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Zagurski is survived by four daughters, Susan Cowette and husband, Joseph of Siler City, Carol Roman of Thomaston, CT, Joanne Bostick and husband, Robert of Siler City, Nancy Bowden and husband, James of Thomaston, CT; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service was held Sunday May 1, 2011 in the family cemetery. Joseph Cowette officiated.

Smith and Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

DORIS JEAN BLAND

Mrs. Doris Jean Bland, 76, of Pittsboro died Tuesday, (04-19-2011), at her home.

The service to celebrate her life were conducted by Pastor Rodney Staley and Revered Ray Gooch on Friday, (04-22-2011) at 2 p.m. at Joy Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Bland was born in Pittsboro, February 25, 1935, the daughter of Vonnie Cook Bland and Mary Cornelia Harris Bland. She was educated at Pittsboro High School, and worked with her predeceased husband, Dr. Lowell Williams in his dental office. She retired from Nations Bank.

Survivors include her daughters, Denice Williams Bryant, Deanna Williams, Ashley Williams Bryant; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

BISHOP CLARENCE CROSBY

Bishop Clarence Crosby, 90, of Siler City, died Wednesday, (04-20-2011) at his residence.

The funeral was held Saturday, (04-23-2011) at 1 p.m. at Church of Jesus of Apostolic Faith with Pastor Michael Crosby, Pastor Wilfred Crosby and Pastor Curtis Ward officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Crosby was born January 30, 1921, the son of Fred and Jane Gilliam Crosby. A native of Logan, WV, he was an Army veteran of WW II and a coal miner. He was Bishop and founder of the Church of Jesus of Apostolic Faith, where he pastured for 14 years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou Dale Crosby; daughters, Bertha Ann Howard of Huntington, WV, Peggy Lou Maynard of Ashland, KY, Brenda Sue Hudson of Asheville, Cathy Lynn Sheppard of Siler City; sons, Clarence Robert Crosby of Iceland, Robert Lee Crosby of Branchland, WV, Wilfred Crosby, Douglas Crosby, and Michael Crosby, all of Siler City; 21 grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren..

Memorials may be made to Church of Jesus of Apostolic Faith, 701 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

KATHERINE SMITH BRINKLEY

Katherine Smith Brinkley, 78, of Siler City died Wednesday, (04-20-2011) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

The funeral was held Monday, (04-25-2011) at 2 p.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brinkley was born in Person County, September 12, 1932, the daughter of Willie Thomas and Lucy Newcomb Smith. She worked as a teacher's assistant for Chatham County Schools and was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Brinkley; a son, David Keith Brinkley; her parents; and brothers, Ben Smith and James Smith.

Survivors include sons, Richard George Brinkley of Canton, Howard Douglas Brinkley of Siler City; sisters, Glenda Leonard of Ramseur, Beatrice English of Bennett, Libby Wilburn of Siler City; brothers, Willie Smith, Ray Smith, both of Asheboro, Jerry Smith of Pittsboro; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

LYNN JUNIOR TEAGUE

Lynn Junior Teague, 65, of Goldston, died Thursday, (04-21-2011).

The funeral was held Sunday, (04-24-2011) at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Griffith and Rev. Ira Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Teague was born November 3, 1945, the son of Leon and Mary Catherine Oldham Teague. Lynn was a native of Chatham County and a graduate of Chatham Central High School. He was employed with Advance Auto Parts in Lincolnton, and was a Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by two sons, Scottie Teague, Casey Teague, both of Lincolnton; step-daughter, Amber Scharett of Cherryville; sister, Linda T. Spivey of Goldston; brother, C. Reid Teague of Goldston; and one grandson.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, W. Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

RUBY JEAN FREEMAN CAVINESS

Ruby Jean Freeman Caviness, 66, of Bennett, died Fri-day (04-22-2011) at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday (04-24-2011) at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Rowland officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Caviness was a Randolph County native and the daughter of the late Walter and Rosa Owens Freeman. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Donnie “Bill” Caviness of the home; sons, James Tyson, Jr. of Schuylkill Co., PA, Jeff Tyson of Asheboro, William “Mickey” Cox of Bennett; sister, Betty Allen of Star; brothers, Junior and Griffin Freeman of Asheboro, Donald Freeman of Troy, Jimmy Freeman of Abner; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
