VINCENZA DiDONATO

Vincenza DiDonato, 93, of Siler City, died Sunday, (02-27-2011) at Chatham Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, (03-08-2011) at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael's in Cranford, NJ. Inurnment will be at St. Raymond Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.

Mrs. DiDonato was born May 8, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Ciro and Anna Lembo Granata. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Marie D. Crocker of Siler City, Ann DiDonato of Holly Springs; son, Nat DiDonato of Cranford, NJ; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Tribute Program, P O Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142; or St. Francis Breadline, 135 West 31st Street, New York, New York 10001-3439.

HAPPY TEAGUE

Happy Teague, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, February 24, 2011. Our sweet Happy is in Heaven now, singing His praises in the highest heavens with the heavenly host. (Psalms 108:1-5) Her children want to thank her for leaving a legacy of unconditional love, faithful witness, and a giving servant's heart. She fought the good fight of faith! (I Tim. 6:12). She taught them how to live life to the fullest.

Happy was born November 17, 1925, the daughter of the late Wade Benson and Aleen (Lamb) Kearns. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lived for her family, "adopted" many sons and daughters throughout her life, and made an impact on all that knew her. She was a genuine ambassador for Christ. Happy was a graduate of Guilford College. She was an opera singer, pilot with The Civil Air Patrol during WW II, realtor, owner and CEO of Happy’s Way, LLC, substitute teacher for Wake County Public Schools, and also worked at the polls every election. She has been a featured soloist at the Capital during Christmas season each year since 1978. Happy was honored with being named North Carolina “Mother of the Year” in 1998. Former Mayor Tom Fetzer declared June 16, 1998 to be “Happy Teague Day” in Raleigh.

Survivors include her children, D. Chris Teague and wife Sarah of Cornelius, Stephen M. Teague of Hollywood, CA, Terry J. Teague and wife Victoria of Atlanta, GA, Patrick E. Teague and wife Sheila of Raleigh, and Bonnie T. Torrence and husband Michael of Charlotte; grandchildren, David, Kristen, Matthew, Joshua, Christopher, Merry, Tyler, Brianna, Ethan, and Rachel; one special great granddaughter, Lily; sisters, Nancy Garrett and Maude Dymond, both of Pleasant Garden. She was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Teague in 1983.

Services were held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 7 p.m. at Crossroad Fellowship Church, 2721 Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27604. The family received friends on Sunday from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Burial was held on Monday, February 28, 2011, at 12 noon at Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crossroads Fellowship Sports Mission Fund, 2721 Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.

DABNEY M. PHILLIPS

Mr. Dabney M. Phillips, 93, of 8166 NC Hwy. 42, Bear Creek, passed away Friday, February 25, 2011 at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Fair Promise United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with Rev. Jonathan Mills officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Phillips was a Chatham County native, the son of the late Riley and Ennis Neal Phillips and a WW II Army Veteran. He was a longtime dairy farmer and was one of the original founders of Coble Dairies Co-op. As long as health permitted, he took an active roll at Fair Promise and served in many capacities, including church treasurer, song leader, church board, and others.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mamie, his sisters, Nina Goins, Allie Phillips, Sallie Sharpe, Amy Wilson and brothers Spinks and Barringer Phillips.

Survivors include sons, Roger Phillips of the home; Roland Phillips and wife Carolyn of Bear Creek; grandchildren, Mack Phillips of Bear Creek and Angela Hughes and husband Chris of Bear Creek; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Taylor and Jackson Hughes of Bear Creek.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett

DAVID KEITH BRINKLEY

David Keith Brinkley, 56, of 1305 South Chatham Avenue, Siler City, died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Brinkley was born January 8, 1955, the son of William Howard and Katherine Smith Brinkley. He was a native of Chatham County and manager of Lowes Food Store having worked in Siler City, Liberty, Randleman, Chapel Hill and Asheboro. He was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Good Life Sunday School Class, a Sunday school teacher, a former Deacon, taught the RA's, and served on the kitchen committee. David loved his family, playing golf, especially at the beach, soft ball and Jordan-Matthews Athletics, where he operated the clock for the basketball games and ran chains for the football games. He was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Linda (Holtzclaw) Brinkley; one daughter, Kelly Jolene Brinkley and friend, Cory, of Siler City; one son, Ryan Keith Brinkley and friend Stephanie Hall of Siler City; mother, Katherine Smith Brinkley of Siler City; two brothers, Richard George Brinkley and wife, Linda of Canton, Howard Douglas Brinkley of Siler City; and one grandson, Parker Brinkley Harpin.

The family received friends Monday, February 28, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

CLARENCE ELTON WHEELER

Clarence “Jack” Elton Wheeler of Bynum died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at UNC Hospital.

Mr. Wheeler was born January 1, 1923 in Bynum. He was an Army Veteran and served as a Sergeant in the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion in World War II. Clarence was a retiree from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

Clarence is survived by his two sons, Jeffery and Elton Wheeler, and a sister, Swannie Looper. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Lorise Wheeler; parents, Martin Elton Wheeler and Annie King Wheeler; and sister, Maude Lee Hill.

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 1 from 6–8 p.m. at Hall Wynne funeral service, Griffin Chapel, Pittsboro.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, followed by fellowship with the family and friends after the service. Pastor Tommy Faust conducted the service.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hall-Wynne funeral service, Griffin Chapel in Pittsboro.

IDA COX HAMMER

Supply - Mrs. Ida Cox Hammer, 99, formerly of 6017 Carl Brady Road, Bennett passed away Sunday February 27, 2011 at Brunswick Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday March 2, 2011 at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hammer was a Randolph County native and the daughter of the late Wiley Robert and Mossie Phillips Cox. She was the widow of Howard Hammer. Mrs. Hammer was the oldest member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church and was a member of the Ladies Fellowship.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her sons Guy, Eugene and James Hammer.

Survivors include daughter, Phyllis Ann Richardson and husband Will of Supply, grandchildren, Tony Hammer of Bennett, Tonda Pless of Conover, Baxter Hammer of Asheboro, Cecil Hammer of Oak Island, Lou Cagle of Carthage, Darrell Hammer of Robbins, Daniel Richardson of Shallotte and Whitney Reinert of Shallotte; and five great-grandchildren.

The family was at Joyce-Brady Chapel Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and other times at 6017 Carl Brady Road, Bennett, N.C. 27208.

BETTY SHIELDS LINDLEY

Betty Shields Lindley, 88, of Wintergarden, Fl passed away peacefully, Monday, February 21, 2011.

A memorial service will be held March 6, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Wintergarden, FL.

Betty was born in Washington, DC, retired from UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, and was formerly from Snow Camp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walker Lindley.

She is survived by daughter, Denise Lloyd of Orlando, FL; sons, Dale Talbert and wife Lisa of Titusville, FL, Shields Long and wife Lynn, of Orlando, FL; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 125 North Lake-view, Wintergarden, FL 34787, or to the donor’s favorite charity.

ANGUS JULIAN CURRIE

Angus Julian Currie, 83, of 502 West Elk Street, Siler City died Monday, February 28, 2011 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation, Siler City.
Mr. Currie was born September 7, 1927, the son of Rex and Mary (Parks) Currie. He was born in Hoke County, an Army Veteran and retired as the City Executive Officer of First Union National Bank, retiring in 1989. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Siler City, former president of Chatham Hospital and member and past president of the Siler City Rotary Club where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. He attended the school of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. Angus was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Mary Parks Currie; a sister, Elizabeth Byrd; two brothers, Robert and Harold Currie.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Duncan) Currie; one sister, Martha Lee Bullock of Red Springs; several nieces and nephews; great-great nephew, Jackson Byrd of St Simons Island, GA; and a great-great niece, Caroline Byrd of St. Simons Island, GA.

The family received friends Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 10-11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Denny and Rev. Travis Owen officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P O Box 212, Siler City, NC 27344.

Smith and Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

RUTH STONE MOORE

Ruth Stone Moore, 93, died February 28, 2011. The daughter of Hamp Lee and Exie Womble Stone, she was born November 18, 1917, in Chatham County.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence J. Moore, and siblings, Albert Stone, Jessie Lee Perry and Rachel Brooks.

She worked for over 40 years at Belk-Yates department store, and devoted a great deal of time to volunteering with the Chatham Hospital Auxiliary, the Red Cross, and at Siler City Care and Rehab, for as long as her health allowed. She was a lifelong member of Loves' Creek Baptist Church, and was active in the Ladies #3 Sunday school class and the WMU - Exie Stone Circle. She most enjoyed spending time with her sisters, children and grandchildren. Additionally, she enjoyed family vacations, cooking and playing bingo.

Ruth is survived by her three sons and their wives, Donald L. and Terry Moore of Winston-Salem, George W. and Carolyn Moore of Asheville, J. Steven and Beth Moore of Woodland Hills, California; five grandchildren, John Moore (Claudia), Joseph Moore (Kelly), Jennifer Moore, Wesley Moore (Shannon), and Ellen Gallimore (Bryan); and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3, at Loves' Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Moore officiating. Visitation will be immediately after the service.

Memorials may be made to Loves' Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the Moore family.

JOHN ROBERT STURDIVANT

Mr. John Robert Sturdivant, 91, of Pittsboro, passed away Friday, (02-18-2011) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday (02-21-2011) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home with Ernie Keck, officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant UMC Cemetery.

Mr. Sturdivant was born in Chatham County to the late William R. and Novie Eubanks Sturdivant. He was employed by Farmers Dairy which became Long Meadow Farms, and later Flavor Rich, where he retired as credit manager. He later worked for Brad and Gray Moody. John served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp, stationed in England, and obtained the rank of Sergeant.

He was predeceased by his wife, Evon Upchurch Sturdivant, sisters, Addie Powell, Jessie Andrews, Mary Griffin, and brothers, Paul, Gene, James, Edgar, and Grady Sturdivant.

He is survived by his daughter, Kaye Martinez; son, Douglas Sturdivant; step-daughters, Joanne Hackney Sturdivant, Brenda Hodges; step-son, Wayne Bowden; sister, Ruth Penninger; brother, Larry Sturdivant; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or to the charity of one’s choice.

PAULINE WILLIAMS MILLS WILLIAMS

Mrs. Pauline Williams Mills Williams, 96, of Pittsboro, died Saturday, (02-19-2011) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home with Pastors Jerry Sanders and Sammy Kay presiding. Interment followed in the Hanks Chapel Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Williams was born in Chatham County May 28, 1914, the daughter of Earnest and Lela Beane Williams. A former resident of Durham, she was a member of Holloway Street Baptist Church, a retired telephone operator, having worked at UNC in Chapel Hill.

Survivors include her daughter, Nell Morris of Pittsboro; two granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, Robert Mills and Harvey Williams; brothers, Clarence “Dutchman” Williams and Alton Williams.

Memorials may be sent to Solid Rock Baptist Church, 3903 US 64 West, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
