TERRY EDWARD PHILLIPS

Terry Edward Phillips, 41, of Siler City died Monday, (02-21-2011) at his residence.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, (02-24-2011) at 11 a.m. at Rives Chapel Baptist Church, with Rev. Tripp Foltz officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 – 11 a.m..

Mr. Phillips was born June 5, 1969, the son of Rolfe Lee Phillips and Peggy Moody LeCroy. He was a native of Chatham County, a veteran of the Iraq War and a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rolfe Phillips.

He is survived by his wife, Abbey Phillips; father, Rolfe Lee Phillips; mother, Peggy Moody LeCroy; and grandmother, Frances Polly Phillips of Siler City.

SARA CORBITT ROBERTS

Sara Corbitt Roberts, 89, died February 16, 2011 in her home off NC 87 North, Pittsboro.

Born in Gates County, December 5, 1921, she was a daughter of James Richard Corbitt and Pearl Russell Corbitt. Sara moved to Pittsboro in 1942 following her graduation from Elon College. She taught Home Economics for several years and worked as a Home Demonstration Agent. She worked with her husband at Roberts Jewelry for 25 years and retired after working for Social Services.

Sara enjoyed gardening and was a charter member of the Backyard Garden Club. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. She was known as a gracious hostess and everyone enjoyed her home-cooked meals. Sara was an avid reader. She and her husband Dave were 60-year members of a canasta card club, where they enjoyed playing cards and dining with seven other couples. Sara and Dave also enjoyed traveling, visiting several European countries as well as many places in the U.S. and Canada. She was a member of the Pittsboro Baptist Church, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the 3'L's, the VFW Auxiliary and the Eastern Star.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Emily and Frank Foushee of Pittsboro, Martha and Matthew Morse of Glen Ellyn, IL, Susie and Chris Phelps of Arden; grandchildren, Marcia Foushee, Matthew Foushee and wife Kristy, Martin, Lizzy and Sydney Morse, Ben Phelps; and great-grandchildren, Wiley and Rachel Foushee.

In addition to her parents, Sara was preceded in death by her husband Dave, who died in 2008, and also by her brothers, Fletcher, Richard, Russell and Otis Corbitt.

The funeral service for Mrs. Roberts was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tripp Harmon at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pittsboro Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery. Friends visited with the family from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Memorials may be sent to either the Chatham County Council on Aging, PO Box 715, Pittsboro, NC 27312, UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, Pittsboro Baptist Church, PO Box 696, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

BESSIE LEE BRADY

Mrs. Bessie Lee Brady, 67, of 6286 Pleasant Grove Church Road in Bennett, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Ran-dolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brady was a Randolph County native and the daughter of the late Erastus and Cratie Ritter Brady. She was a retired teacher’s assistant at Bennett School and also did substitute teaching after her retirement. She attended Bennett Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Lloyd, Bill, and Voyage Brady, and a sister, Artie Teeter.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond H. Brady of the home; son, Mark Brady and wife Jennifer of Bennett; sister, Berta Mae McDaniel of Bennett; brothers, Jerry Brady and wife Carol of Bennett, Joe Mack Brady and wife Lynn of Coleridge; and grandchildren, Samantha and Lauren Brady of Bennett.

The Brady family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Pleasant Grove Christian Church and other times at the home.

Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett served the Brady family.

GEORGE BILLY “BILL” GAINES

George Billy "Bill" Gaines, 79, of 114 Central Avenue, Siler City, died Thursday, February 17, 2011.

Mr. Gaines was born April 27, 1931, the son of John T. and Mattie (Hancock) Gaines, Sr. He was a native of Chatham County, an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was the owner of G.B. Gaines Sawmill and the co-owner/ operator of Siler City Builders. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John T. Gaines, Jr., Oren Gaines sister, Mary Lee Powers; and granddogs, Mill, Saw and Chance.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dottie (Seawell) Gaines; three daughters, Darlene Gaines Culberson and husband, Van of Siler City, Lynda Gaines Pore and husband, Mickey of Siler City, Glynda Gaines McNeill and husband, Roger of Coleridge; grandsons, Hagan Pore, Brennan Pore, Zach McNeill; sisters, Louise G. McLaughlin and husband, Buddie of Siler City, Betty G. Stone and husband, Dennis of Siler City, Ella G. Brower and husband, Jim of Siler City, Frankie G. Bridges of Siler City; brothers, Fred Gaines and Alton Gaines, both of Siler City; sister-in-law, Lucy W. Gaines of Goldston; special niece, Jane P. Petty; step-grandchildren, Kim C. Purvis and husband, David, Nikki C. Murchison and husband, David, Shawn Culberson and wife, Deanna; seven step great-grandchildren and granddogs, Dossie Jane, Diesel, Abby, Moo, Jake and Joe.

The family received friends Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Sunday, February 20, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston with Rev. Jerry Foley, Dr. Eddie McClure and Rev. Barry Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of donor's choice.

DORIS S. ALBRIGHT

Doris Spence Albright of 302 East Elk Street, Siler City, died February 19, 2011. She was 88 years old. She was a long time teller for the Chatham Bank in Siler City and later became an officer for First Union Bank.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Siler City, active in the Silk Hope Home Extension Club and the Universal Healthcare Red Hat Society. She graduated from Coleridge High School and attended High Point College.

funeral service and burial was held at Brush Creek Baptist Church, Siler City, on Monday, February 21, 2011, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Hobson officiating. Burial followed in the Brush Creek Cemetery.

Surviving are her son, Benjamin Spence Albright and wife, Bonnie; daughter, Pearl Albright Herndon and husband, Mack; stepson, Naman Thomas Albright; stepdaughter, JoAnn Albright Puryear and husband Dink; five grandchildren, B. Spence Albright, Jr., Gavin Pike Albright, Jenna Beth Stewart Anderson and husband Brian, Anna Stewart Baxter and husband Jordan, Charles Douglas Puryear; two great-grandcildren, Conner Spence Anderson and Harrison Keith Baxter; a sister, Rachel Spence Brooks and two brothers, Dwight Spence and Tim Spence.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph Lee Spence and Jenny Finison Spence, her husband, Naman Teague (Pete) Albright, a granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Albright, and her sister, Nancy Spence Sizemore.

The family was at Loflin Funeral Home in Ramseur from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, 2011, and at other times at the home of Ben Albright.

Arrangements by Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur.

The family thanks the entire staff at Universal Health Care for kind care and love for many years attending to our mother and our father.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers or other memorials, donations be made to The Ashley Albright Memorial Pottery Scholarship Foundation, Inc., a 501 (c) non-profit educational foundation providing scholarships for pottery students at 101 Weatherly Square, Ramseur, N.C. 27316.

ARCHIE SPIVEY

Archie Spivey, 89, of Siler City died Monday, February 21, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. Spivey was born March 22, 1921, the son of James Robert and Nancy (Blalock) Spivey. He was a native of Chatham County, an Army Veteran of WW II and self-employed. He was a member of Meroney United Methodist Church where he taught a Sunday School Class for several years. Archie enjoyed his work, spending time fishing and especially, hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ava Lee Beal Spivey, eleven brothers and sisters; a granddaughter, Kimberly S. Nesbitt and step-mother, Vera Spivey.

He is survived by two sons, Archie D. Spivey and wife, Sue of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kermit F. Spivey of Siler City; one sister, Sylvia Culberson of Siler City; one brother, Branson Spivey of Siler City; grandchildren, Amanda S. Barbour and husband Justin of Sanford, Ashley L. Johnson of Boynton Beach, FL; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Landon Barbour, Alex Nesbitt, Mackenzie Nesbitt Moore; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 24, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Friday, February 25, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Meroney United Methodist Church, 10568 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek with Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Meroney United Methodist Church Building Fund, 10568 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

KENNETH EARLE RITTER

Kenneth Earle Ritter, 68, of Burlington died Tuesday, (02-08-2011) at Alamance Regional Hospital in Burlington.

The graveside service was held Friday, (02-11-2011) at 2 p.m. at Rives Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Howard Thompson officiating.

Mr. Ritter was born November 1, 1942, the son of Palmer and Doris Holt Ritter. He was born in Chatham County, employed with O. E. Enterprises, and attended the Burlington Assembly of God. Kenney was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Larry David "Bo" Ritter and a sister, Lea Helen Godwin.

There are no immediate survivors.

HUBERT DOUGLAS CROTTS

Mr. Doug “HD” Crotts of Charlotte, died Wednesday, (02-09-2011).

A memorial service was held at Dilworth United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, (02-12-2011) with Rev. Ben Devoid, officiating.

Born in Siler City, February 3, 1921, he served as a Marine during World War II, receiving The Bronze Star, Navy Cross, and British Distinguished Service Metal for actions on Tarawa and the Purple Heart on Siapan. After service, he received his BA in History and English at Lenoir-Rhyne College and MA in History at U.N.C. Chapel Hill. A dedicated teacher in the school system of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, he was also a member of Dilworth United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Eugenia Farrell Crotts; daughter, Susanne Crotts of the home; son, Ed Crotts of Greenville; sister, Mary Howell of Charlotte; brother, George Byron Crotts of Graham; and two grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dilworth United Methodist Church, 605 East Boulevard Charlotte, NC 28203.

MARGIE G. GREEN

Mrs. Margie G. Green, 71, of Pittsboro died Monday, (02-07-2011) at her home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday (02-10-2011) at Glover Grove A.M.E.Z. Church with Rev. Gloria Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Green was education in the Chatham County schools, and was a member of Glover’s Grove A.M.E.Z. Church.

Survivors include children, Anita Green of Pittsboro, Gary Green of Holly Springs, Tania Poston of Pittsboro, Larry Brooks, Rena Cotton, both of Bear Creek, Darlene Jackson of Harrisonburg, VA; brothers, Henry Glover of Siler City; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

JOHN RUFUS ETHERIDGE

Mr. John Rufus Etheridge, 67, of Pittsboro died Tuesday (02-08-2011) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (02-12-2011) at Hamlet Chapel C.M.E. Church, with Rev. Charles Robinson officiating. Burial followed in Pittsboro Cemetery.

Mr. Etheridge was a graduated of Aviation High School in New York City. He served 10 years in the U.S. Army, worked for Chatham County Schools, and was a member of Hamlet Chapel Church.

Survivors include his wife Lucky Etheridge of the home; son, Keith Etheridge; sisters, Fran Etheridge, Dorothy Bray, Evelyn Lowery of New Jersey; brothers, Willie and Ricky Etheridge of New York; and two grandchildren.

MARY LILLIAN HILLIARD DIXON

Mary L. Dixon, 89, of Pittsboro, died Friday, (02-11-2011) in her home.

The service to celebrate Mary’s life was held at 2 p.m. Monday, (02-14-2011), at Pittsboro Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Tripp Harmon presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

A Chatham County native, Mary was born January 31, 1922 to Freeman Hilliard and Katie Beckwith Hilliard. She was a homemaker and attended Pittsboro Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Nesbitt Dixon of Pittsboro; daughters, Glenda Dixon of Pittsboro, Vivian Dixon Overton of Oxford; brother, Beckwith Hilliard of Fallston, MD; two grandsons, and one great- granddaughter, Ava Crow.
