PERCY EUGENE ALSTON

Rev. Percy Eugene Alston, 61, of Pittsboro died Monday (12-06-2010) at Chapel Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday (12-09-2010) at St. Matthew AME Zion Church with Rev. Ronnie Brocks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rev. Alston was a native of Chatham County, a member of St. Matthews Church, a member of the Sunday School department, and an ordained minister.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Carrie Minnie Alston of Pittsboro; children, Jeffrey Alston of Siler City, Crystal N. Craven of Pittsboro; step-son, Rodney Carter of Sanford; brother, Robert Alston of Pittsboro, sisters, Carrie L. Alston of Jonesboro, GA, Brenda Alston of Mableton, GA; one grandchild and one step-grandchild.

JESSIE SIMS HUNEYCUTT

Mrs. Jessie Sims Huneycutt died peacefully on December 7, 2010 at her home in Pittsboro, surrounded by her family. She was 105 years old, having been born In Charlotte, NC on May 16, 1905, the daughter of Charles Whitney and Estelle Austin Sims. In 1924 she married the Rev. W. J. Huneycutt and took on the calling of a Presbyterian pastor’s wife, serving pastorates with him in Charleston, SC, Fayetteville, NC, Laurel Hill, NC and Monroe, NC before retiring to Pittsboro.

Mrs. Huneycutt is survived by their four children, Jerome Huneycutt, Margaret Huneycutt, and Rev. Dr. Melicent Huneycutt-Vergeer, all of Pittsboro; Carolyn Huneycutt Basham (Curtis) of McLeansville; grandchildren, Jessica Mitchell (Arley) of Greensboro, Megg Martin (Carl) of Raleigh, William (Tracy) Huneycutt of Pittsboro; great-grandchildren, Sara Beth Martin, Drake and Taylor Mitchell, Kate, Emily, and Josh Huneycutt. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. J.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, with a committal service at 3 p.m. Friday at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Stanfield. Interment was in Philadelphia Baptist Church cemetery. Friends visited with the family following each service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church for the Huneycutt Fund for Families in Crisis, PO Box 713, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

RUTH A. WORTH

Ruth A. Worth, 91, of Satellite Beach, Florida died Friday, (12-10-2010).

Memorial services will be held Thursday, (12-16-2010) at 5 p.m. at Brownlie & Maxwell Chapel in Melbourne, Florida.

Mrs. Worth was a past employee of the Intelligence Agency of the War Department in Washington during WW II and later, a housewife.

She was a member of the Friends Church Meeting in Mt. Airy, the VFW Auxiliary, the Historical Society of Mt. Airy.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Worth and wife Pamela of Satellite Beach, Florida; sister, Barbara Holder Williams of Siler City; and two grandchildren, Amelia and Amanda, both of Satellite Beach, FL.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home is Melbourne, FL is assisting the family.

DEBORAH SUSAN CLARK NUNNERY

Deborah Susan Clark Nunnery, 57, of Bear Creek, died Sunday, (12-05-2010), at her residence.

The funeral was held Wednesday, (12-08-2010) at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie McClure officiating. Entombment followed at Lee Memory Gardens Chapel Mausoleum in Sanford.

Mrs. Nunnery was born February 18, 1953, in Chatham County to the late Clarence and Virginia Burns Clark. She was also preceded in death by a son, Randy Clark.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Dale Nunnery of the home; son, Scott Nunnery of Siler City; daughter, Cathy Nunnery of Goldston; brother, Roger Clark of Goldston; half-brothers, Baxter Moore of Siler City, David Moore of Goldston; half-sisters, Clarissa Moore, Virginia Ann Moore, Lisa Moore, and Laura Moore all of Bennett; and four grandchildren.

RONNIE H. McMILLAN

Ronnie Howard McMillan, 56, of Bear Creek, died Sunday (12-05-2010) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Graveside memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Antioch Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Garland Smith officiating. The

Mr. McMillan was born April 23, 1954 in Hampton, VA, the son of Walter Howard McMillan and the late Laura Davis McMillan. A talented musician, he played with Charlie Daniels and on Nashville Row.

Survivors include his father, Walter H. McMillan and step-mother, Christine of Sanford; daughter, Audra Edwards of Augusta, GA; sister, Pamela Ann Vulgarmore of Waverly, OH; brother, Steven Michael McMillan of Silk Hope, step-sister, Pam Brown of Sanford, step-brother, Harold Grainger of Cameron.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Ronnie McMillan Funeral Fund c/o Smith Funeral Home of Broadway, PO Box 370, Broadway, NC 27505.

LONNIE MICHAEL GLOVER

Lonnie Michael Glover, 52, of Siler City died Sunday (12-05-2010) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (12-08-2010) at First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Gray officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Glover was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School, and former employee of Mastercraft Corporation.

Survivors include his wife Rosa Glover of Sanford; sons, Desmond Glover of Chapel Hill, Travis Glover of High Point; parents, Johnnie Glover Sr. and Evelyn E. Glover of the home; brothers, Johnnie Glover, Jr. of Durham, Nathaniel Glover of the home; sisters, Portia Glover of Jacksonville, FL, Lorie Ann Sni-pes of High Point, and Raquel Thomas of Durham.

WILLIAM CALEB “Pete” BREWER, JR.

William Caleb "Pete" Brewer, Jr., 92, of Bennett, died Wednesday December 1, 2010.

The Service of Remembrance will be private.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Shields Brewer. Survivors include his daughter, Rose Brewer Dixon of Chapel Hill; grandsons, Greg Dixon and wife Starr of Gastonia, Doug Dixon and wife Jill Cady of Atlanta, GA; and one great-grandson, Jude Dixon.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial gifts may be made to UNC Hospice.

REV. BURTON CORNELIUS JESSUP

Sanford – Rev. Burton Cornelius Jessup, 97, of Broadway, N.C., went to be with Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at Chatham Hospital. A soldier of Jesus Christ has gone home. Rev. Jessup received a call to the ministry at the age of 14 to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and save persons from being lost forever. He served faithfully, preaching, praying, fasting, and reaching the lost with all his strength for over 83 years. To God be the glory!

Rev. Jessup was born in Guilford County, N.C. on May 14, 1913, the son of the late Walter Dawson Jessup and Bessie Myrtle Dean Jessup. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Rebecca Kellam Jessup; five brothers, Hugh Jessup, Robert Jessup, William Jessup, Charles “Red” Jessup, Steve Jessup; three sisters, Edith Jessup Langley, Mabel Jessup Douglass, Evelyn Jessup Brown, and an infant son, Baxter Jessup.

Rev. Jessup was a graduate of Brevard University in Brevard, N.C.; Asbury College (1940) in Wilmore, Kentucky; Asbury Theological Seminary with a Master of Religious Education (1946). He also completed post-graduate studies at Emory School of Theology in Atlanta, Georgia. Following graduate studies, he served as Professor of Theology at John Wesley College in High Point, N.C. while assisting with new church starts and serving as a traveling evangelist. He served several denominations including the United Methodist Church, the People’s Methodist Church, the Evangelical Methodist Church, the Wesleyan Church and a church he founded and was president for many years, The Independent Methodist Holiness Church. He served as a Board Member of John Wesley Camp Meeting in High Point, N.C. and attended almost every year since the early 1960s and supported various missionaries around the world. While serving as an evangelist for a revival in 1961, he was called as a pastor and served Calvary Missionary Methodist Church along with his long-time assistant, Rev. Thomas Holder, until his retirement.

Only July 31, 1941, he married the love of his life, Catherine Rebecca Kellam of Greensboro, N.C. They celebrated 59 years together prior to her death on June 26, 2001.

Rev. Jessup is survived by three sons, Frank Morris Jessup and wife, Linda Martin Jessup of Bonlee, N.C., Beverly Carradine Jessup and wife, Donna Ann McCormick Jessup of West End, N.C. and Harvey Larrabee Jessup of Broadway, N.C.; grandchildren, Stephanie Candice Jessup Meadows and husband, Jack Meadows of Siler City, N.C., Kristin Renee Jessup Cloer and husband, Christopher Cloer of Kernsville, N.C., Kelly Ann Jessup Whapham and husband, Brent Whapham of Jacksonville, Florida, and Kathleen Rose Jessup of West End, N.C.; brother, Walter Jessup and wife Virginia Jessup of Albany, Georgia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

The family will receive friends Friday, December 3, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. A celebration of the life and ministry service of Rev. Jessup will be held at Calvary Missionary Methodist Church, Olivia, N.C. on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Curtis Norris officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Calvary Missionary Methodist Church for their years of love, prayers, and support extended to the entire Jessup family. A special thanks to Rev. Curtis Norris for officiating at the Celebration Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Missionary Methodist Church New Building Fund, P.O. Box 528, Olivia, N. C. 28368 or to the charity of your choice.

CAROLYN EDMONDS LAIL “LYN”

Carolyn Edmonds Lail "Lyn", age 62, passed away peacefully at home in Siler City, surrounded by her loving family on December 1, 2010, after a seven month struggle with lymphoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Virginia Edmonds of Gloucester, VA. She is survived by her husband Bill; daughter, Christine Anderson and husband, Bill of Boone, daughter, Jenny Campbell and husband, Alistair of Portland, OR, and her son, Wesley Lail and wife, Stephanie of Gulf. She was blessed with four grandchildren, Rebecca and Gwendolyn Anderson of Boone, and Lucy and Spencer Campbell of Portland, OR. Lyn is also survived by six siblings, Royal Edmonds and wife, Susan of Seminole, FL, Vicky Miracky and husband, Bob of Ocala, FL, Fran Pitts and husband, Buddy of Griffin, GA, Phil Edmonds and wife, Ann of Ashland, VA, Steve Edmonds and wife, Alexandra of Richmond, VA, and Annie Bicking of Richmond, VA.

Lyn graduated from Wellesley High School in Wellesley, MA, in 1966. She attended the University of Maine at Orono and NC State University before graduating from UNC-G with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She was a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, niece, aunt and friend to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her kind, loving, fun, generous spirit and her many artistic talents. Her faithful dog, June, and her beautiful gardens will certainly miss her gentle and loving touch.

The family extends their deep appreciation to Dr. Ryan Raddin and the dedicated staff in the Hematology-Oncology Department at the UNC Cancer Center, Sherry Beal and the Community Home Care and Hospice team in Siler City, and her Nurse Practitioner, Peggy Brewer and the staff at Chatham Medical Specialists.

A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh St. in Siler City, on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 2 p.m. A reception with the family followed in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home of Siler City assisted the family.

LESTER JOSEPH PETER HAINS, POP-POP

Lester Joseph Peter Hains, Pop-Pop, 85 of Pittsboro, NC, died at his home on Thursday, November 30, 2010.

Lester was born on July 4, 1925 in New Rochelle, N.Y. to the late Norbert and Lizette Hains. His education was interrupted during high school when he volunteered to join the United States Navy. He served his country as a Seabee in the South Pacific during World War II.

Lester married Elizabeth Accles of Tuckahoe, N.Y. in 1948. He is a 1949 graduate of Iona College in New Rochelle with a degree in Business Administration. During his career in business he was employed by Standard Brands, Allied Chemical Corporation and Duke University. He retired from Duke in 1990. His greatest legacy of service was to the Catholic churches where he and Elizabeth and their 13 children regularly attended Mass. He served in varying capacities at Holy Name and Holy Family Church es in New Rochelle, St. Ann in Colonial Heights, VA, the Newman Center in Chapel Hill and St. Julia in Siler City.

Lester moved his large family South in 1969, first to Walthal, VA and then to Pittsboro in 1971. He maintained a lifelong interest in physical fitness and was an avid tennis player, runner and golfer. He frequently played sports with his children.

Survivors include his beloved wife Elizabeth and a sister, Madeline Mary Connick of Cary. He is also survived by his 13 children: daughter, Anne Marie and husband James Reppucci of Cary; son, Bernard Hains and wife Denise of Alpharetta, GA; son, Peter Hains and wife Julie of Richmond, VA; son, David and wife Deborah of Huntersville; son, Michael and wife Cindy of Asheboro; son Matthew and wife Cheryl of Pittsboro; son, Thomas and wife Anita of Concord; son, Christopher and wife Kathy of Clayton; son, Joseph and wife Kim of Davidson; son, Phillip and wife Liz of Concord; daughter, Clare and husband Paul Meyer of Concord; daughter Elizabeth and husband James Hart of Pittsboro; and daughter, Katherine and husband Michael Richey of Starkville, MS. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to direct memorials to St. Julia Church, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City, NC 27344; or UNC Hospice of Chatham County, P. O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

The family received friends on Thursday, December 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home. A Mass of the Resurrection celebrating Lester’s life took place Friday, December 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Julia Catholic Church in Siler City.
