MARGARET “PEG” SHENTON

Margaret “Peg” Shenton passed away on November 29, 2010. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 21, 1926 and christened Margaret Mogen O’Neill. After finishing high school, Peg completed the training program for radiology technicians at the University of Pennsylvania, and took her first job at Lancaster General Hospital. It was there that she met and married Dave Shenton, who was attending Franklin & Marshall College on the GI Bill, after returning from duty in the U.S. Navy in the War.

Peg and Dave had many wonderful years together until his death in 2002. While Dave worked as a teacher and later as a guidance counselor in the Abington Township Public Schools in Pennsylvania, Peg ran the household and had many opportunities to perfect her wonderful cooking and sewing talents for a growing family, while also staying active in the League of Women Voters and the Democratic Party. In addition to raising four children, Peg and Dave also hosted exchange students Christian, Andreas, and Ulrike Germershausen from Berlin Germany, who still think of Peg as “Mom.” Once her children got older, Peg started a career as a parish secretary for several Episcopal Church parishes.

For several years, Peg and Dave managed the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Choir Cottage in Stone Harbor, New Jersey so that the family could spend summers at the beach. They also introduced their children to the beauty and diversity of our country on several camping trips, including a cross-country trek in 1968 when they were accompanied by three children, two guests from Germany and a miniature schnauzer, all packed into a Ford station wagon, with a pop-up camper in tow.

After Dave’s retirement, Peg and Dave moved to Pittsboro, North Carolina where Peg served as parish secretary at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church and was active in the Durham-Orange Quilters’ Guild and the Village Quilters in Fearrington. Her work adorns the homes of her children and friends, and many recipients of gift quilts from those groups.

After Dave’s death, Peg continued to travel, making trips to Europe to visit Ireland, to visit her friends in Berlin, and to spend some time in Tuscany, where this picture was taken. Peg’s open, loving and welcoming spirit will be sorely missed by all of her friends and by her surviving family members: Son Donald of San Anselmo, California; Daughter Mary Beth and her partner Marie Denn and their dog Greta in Olema, California; Son Michael of El Portal, California, his daughter Michelle of Truckee, California, and his stepchildren Rachel and Mathew Langsdale; and Son Bill, his wife Susan and their daughter Sarah, all of Wake County.

Peg’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caregivers and staff of Glenaire in Cary and Hospice of Wake County.. We deeply appreciate all the good wishes and condolences received from Peg’s many friends and from all our friends and colleagues.

A memorial service for Peg will be held on Saturday, December 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 221 Union Street in Cary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County or to the charity of your choice.
