HAZEL LAMBERT CALLICUTT

Hazel Lambert Callicutt, beloved Mom and Mema, 71, of Bear Creek, was called home to live with Jesus on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. She was an active member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Director. She was retired but had worked previously at A. J. Schneierson and Sons and Joan Fabrics (formerly Collins & Aikman).

Hazel was preceded in death by father and mother, Howard Wayne Lambert and Velma Kivett Lambert; sister, Faye Lambert Jones; and her husband, James Walter Callicutt.

She is survived by daughter, Myra Hargis of Bear Creek; sons, Mike Callicutt of Broadway, Johnny Callicutt and wife, Judy of Bear Creek, Tim Callicutt and wife, Nam Sun of Bonlee; granddaughter, Jamie Callicutt of Bonlee; grandsons, Lee Callicutt of Bonlee, Christopher Callicutt of Bear Creek; sister, Doris L. Stanley and husband, David of Liberty; brother, Ervin Lambert and wife, Audrey of Climax; and several special nieces, nephews and friends.

The family received friends Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Friday, October 8, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Marc Sanders and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JOSIE BEAL HILLIARD PICKARD

Josie Viola Beal Hilliard Pickard, 87, of 246 Ball Park Road, Bonlee died Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation. She was born October 25, 1922, the daughter of the late Joe and the late Florence (Hilliard) Beal.

Mrs. Pickard was a native of Chatham County and a member of Bonlee Baptist Church. She was employed with Kayser-Roth Hosiery in Pittsboro, Robbins and Ghant and retired from Brian Center as a dietician aide. Josie loved to read and was preceded in death by a daughter, Ester Hilliard, and a grandson, Michael Light.

She is survived by her husband, Jack K. Pickard; three daughters, Nancy H. Light of Staley, Mary Ann H. Hardister of Bonlee, Jackie P. Wilson of Bear Creek; one son, James Ralph Hilliard of Elon College; one sister, Fay B. Brogan of Goldston; two brothers, Loy Beal of Siler City, Freeman Beal of Tacoma, WA; two grandsons, three granddaughters and one great- grandson.

The family received friends Monday, October 11, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Jackie and Mike Wilson, 331 Wilson Farm Road, Bear Creek. The funeral was held Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Bonlee Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Burial followed in Hope Cemetery, Bonlee.

HUBERT CARLYLE “DICK” DIXON

Hubert Carlyle “Dick” Dixon, 88, of Asheville, was promoted to Heaven on Sunday, October 10, 2010. He was a resident of Madison Manor Rehabilitation Center in Mars Hill.

Mr. Dixon was born on April 3, 1922 in Madison, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H.C. Dixon and a sister, Caryl DuPlessis. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty DiSomma Dixon, of the home, whom he struck with his Army truck in Naples, Italy in 1944. He is also survived by three sons: Buzz Dixon and wife Soon-ok of Chatsworth, CA, Rikk Dixon of the home, and Robert Dixon and wife Kim of Kernersville, NC; eight grandchildren, Yang-mi, Heather (and husband Bobby), Kristy, Amber, Lyle, Laura (and husband Dustin), Luke and Lindsey; three great-grandchildren, Skyler, Harvey, and Lily; and sister, Bidney Dixon of Northridge, CA.

As a member of the Greatest Generation, he served in the Army during both World War II, where he was stationed in North Africa and Italy, as well as the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed in Raleigh. He was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant. He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles. For 33 years, he was an industrial engineer in garment manufacturing and retired from Vanderbilt Shirt Company in 1988. A lifelong Southern Baptist, Mr. Dixon served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and choir member. In the early 1960’s, he was a member of Barnardsville Baptist Church and then Oteen Baptist Church. After moving back to Asheville in 1976, he joined Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church. Through the years he participated as a Boy Scout volunteer, was a member of the Lions Club, and the Frances Burdette American Legion Post 70. He loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church, with Pastor Daniel Dockery officiating. The family receivec friends following the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, C/O Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church, 283 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801.

MARGIE MOODY BLALOCK

Margie Moody Blalock, 78, of 845 Callicutt Road, Bear Creek died Monday, October 11, 2010 at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.
Mrs. Blalock was born May 23, 1932, the daughter of Murk and Cora (Dunn) Moody. She was a native of Chatham County and a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church where she taught the children's class for 50 years. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing handbags, handmade quilts and working in her vegetable and flower gardens. Margie was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Moody.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ralph Blalock; two daughters: Linda B. Mashburn and husband, Roger of Bear Creek, Lea Ann B. Thomas and husband, Paul of Leland; three sisters, Lois Stallings of Burlington, Eva Bare of Siler City, Lucille Moody of Bear Creek; two brothers, Tom Moody of Bear Creek, Earl Moody of Garner; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Tuesday, October 12, 2010 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home and other times at the home of Roger and Linda Mashburn, 819 Callicutt Road, Bear Creek. The funeral was held Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Marc Sanders and Rev. Allen Overton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

HENRY LUTHER LEFLER

Henry Luther Lefler, 59, of Pittsboro, died Thursday (09-30-2010) at his home.

The funeral service was conducted by Pastors Mary Ellen Bender and Bob Way at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Interment, with military honors, followed in Lee Memory Gardens in Sanford.

Born in Danville, VA on October 25, 1950, Mr. Lefler was the son of Albert and Rosa Snow Lefler. He served his country in the US Marine Corps during the Viet Nam war, was a retired engine mechanic and member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Louise M. Lefler; sons, Dale Lefler of Cary, Jeffrey Lefler of Pittsboro; daughter, Janet Hill of Benson; mother, Rosa S. Lefler of Saxapahaw;

brother, Curtis Lefler of Saxapahaw; sister, Robin Bolchoz of Newport News, VA; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild;

JASON ARTHUR TELEKI

Jason Arthur Teleki, of Siler City died Wednesday, (09-29-2010).

The memorial service was held Sunday, (10-03-2010) at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Nathan King officiating.

Mr. Teleki was born March 17, 1972 in Norman, Oklahoma, the son of Elemer and Jane (King) Teleki. He was a self-employed computer technician.

Survivors include his parents, Elemer Teleki of Siler City and Jane King Teleki of Greenville; maternal grandmother, Daphne King; and two sisters.

Shelton Leon Brooks, Jr. of Pittsboro died Sunday (10-03-2010).

GLADYS JOHNSON CULBERSON

Gladys Johnson Culberson, 80, of Siler City died Sunday, (10-03-2010) at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, (10-06-2010) at 11 a.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Burriss and Rev. Gene Booker officiating.
Mrs. Culberson was born August 13, 1930, the daughter of George and Mary (Bost) Johnson. Mrs. Culberson was a native of Chatham County and a member of Rocky River Baptist Church. She was retired from Klopman Mills and had worked at Hadley Peoples Mfg and was also a poultry farmer. Her husband, Clifton Culberson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne C. Mashburn of Siler City; sons, Robert E. Culberson, Glenn Culberson, Boyd L. Culberson, Archie Culberson all of Siler City; sister; Sue Burgess of Greensboro; brothers, Larry Johnson of Gibsonville, Sidney Johnson of Burlington; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren,

JOSEPH LEWIS STABILE

Joseph Lewis Stabile, 66, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (10-03-2010) at UNC Hospitals.

Friends may visit with the family from 4 – 6 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Following visitation, Mr. Stabile will be cremated. Burial will be private.

Born in New York on December 11, 1943, Mr. Stabile was the son of Alphonse Lewis Stabile and Pauline Harap Stabile. He served in the US Army during the Viet Nam war, and was a retired detective from the New York City Police Department.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian LoPresti Stabile; daughter Tanya Vogel; brother, Lewis Stabile of New Jersey; sister, Mary D’Alba of New York; and two grandchildren.

FRANCES GARNER HANCOCK

Mrs. Frances Garner Hancock, 75, of Bennett died Tuesday (10-05-2010) at Universal Healthcare in Ramseur.

funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (10-07-2010) at Pine Mountain Friends Church, with Rev. Joey Greene officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hancock was a Richmond County native and retired from Ithaca Industries in Robbins. She was a member of Pine Mountain Friends Church.

Survivors include sons, Mike Hodges of Asheboro, Don Hodges of Bennett; daughter, Tracy Nichols of Bennett; brothers, James Garner of Greensboro, Robert Garner of High Point; and four grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday (10-06-2010), from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett and other times at the home of Mike Hodges, 5148 Hwy. 42 S. Asheboro.

LEODA SMITH ATNIP

Leoda Smith Atnip, age 83, of Siler City, died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Oaklawn Cemetery, 737 Albemarle Road, Asheboro with Dr. Richard Crider officiating.

Mrs. Atnip was born on July 31, 1927 in Moore County, to Odus F. and Mary Della Smith. Leoda married Thomas J. "Pete" Atnip on September 1, 1945 and he preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Campbellsville College and taught high school English in Owensboro, KY as well as in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, where she also served as the adviser to the high school newspaper and yearbook. Leoda enjoyed needlework, crocheting and knitting, and was an avid reader.

She is survived by her son, Don Atnip and his wife Sharon of Charlotte; daughter, Jan Atnip Massey and her husband Richard of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Hillary King, Christina King, Doug Massey and his wife Tammy, Brian Massey and his wife Allison; great grandchildren, Drew Massey, Reese Massey, Marcos Campos, Alex Campos; sisters, Florence Tuttle and her husband Harold of Siler City, Rachel Brewer and her husband Earl of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Friday, October 1, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Oakhurst Baptist Church, 2225 S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro.

The family thanks the doctors and nurses of Chatham Memorial Hospital and UNC Hospital for giving them a few more precious years with her, and gives special thanks to the staff of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program in Siler City. Their work not only strengthened her heart but also her spirit. Giving to others always made her happy and she would be pleased to help others enjoy the benefits of this program. "Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates." Proverbs 31:31

JOHN REYNOLDS HARRIS

John Reynolds Harris, 80, of 455 Hillcrest Avenue, Goldston, died Sunday, October 3, 2010 at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Mr. Harris was born April 29, 1930, the son of Joseph John and Georgia Elizabeth (Reynolds) Harris. He was Chatham County native, attended Louisburg College for two years and East Carolina University. John was a member of Goldston United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, had served as Sunday School Superintendent, served on the finance committee and as overseer of the Goldston cemetery committee. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. John was a member of the Goldston Lion's Club with 52 years of service. He was a 2000-2001 recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow and a 2006-2007 recipient of the Jack Stickley Fellow. He was a farmer and a serviceman for B. M. Hancock and Sons and retired from Piedmont Poultry. John enjoyed farming, fishing and telling jokes.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances "Frankie" Taylor Harris; daughter, Lisa H. Smith and husband, Randy of Bear Creek; son, Jody R. Harris and wife, Tina of Bear Creek; brother, William J. Harris of Port St. Lucie, FL; grandchildren, Jordan and Turner Harris, Ethan and Hannah Smith; and special caregiver and family friend, Carmen Bryant.

The family received friends Tuesday, October 5, 2010 from 5-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church, Hillcrest Avenue, Goldston, with Rev. Thomas Simpson and Rev. Jim Summey officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
