PAUL JOHNSON

Paul Johnson, 70, of Staley died Monday (07-26-2010) at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday (07-30-2010) at 2 p.m. at Olivers Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Thedelmon Cromartie officiating.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Chatham County, a member of Olivers Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and an employee of Southern Aggregates for several years.

He was preceded in death by his son Samuel Johnson and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Annie C. Johnson; daughters, Annette C. Bittle of Liberty, Shirley Johnson of High Point, Jennifer Johnson of Garner; son, William Paul Johnson of Ramseur; sisters, Gertrude Caviness of Julian, Victoria Ford of Liberty, Annie Lane of Greensboro, Regina Buchanan of Durham; brothers, Leroy Johnson of Staley, and Roscoe Johnson of Liberty; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

JOHN HOOVER WILSON

John Hoover Wilson, 82, of Siler City died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Wilson was born May 3, 1928, the son of Thomas Henry and Betty Hough Wilson. He was a native of Chatham County and the owner-operator of Wilson 64 Auto Sales for 45 years. He attended Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church. Hoover loved working, his family, his church family, his country and visiting with friends in the community.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa W. Graves and husband, Ricky of Siler City, Carolyn Wilson of Graham; three sons, Marty Wilson of Siler City, Greg Wilson of Nashville, TN, John D. Wilson of Siler City; one sister, Rachel W. Hudson of Asheboro; grandchildren, Hillary and Cliff Graves, Corey and Adam Wilson, Nicole Wilson; and former wife, Nancy P. Wilson of Siler City.

The family received friends Thursday, July 29, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC and other times at the home of Teresa and Ricky Graves, 66 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2010 at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church, 17475 US 64 W, Siler City, NC with Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial followed in Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

ODELL “SMILEY” JACKSON

Mr. Odell “Smiley” Jackson, 77, of Hanks Chapel Road, Pittsboro, died in his home Wednesday, July 28, 2010 with his family by his side.

Mr. Jackson was born in Sampson County on August 23, 1932, the son of Luby Pete Jackson and Betty Thornton Jackson. He was manager of Burns Exxon in Pittsboro for 38 years. Mr. Jackson was a member of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, where he served on the Board of Trustees, as a deacon, an usher, and participated in the Men’s Fellowship. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Keck Jackson; sons, Mike Jackson and wife Pam, of Pittsboro, Charles Jackson and wife Diane of Sanford, Tommy Jackson and wife Kim of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Ruth Jackson Gunter of Pittsboro; daughter-in-law, Sylvia G. Jackson of Pittsboro; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his son Joe and a brother, William L. “Bill” Jackson.

The funeral service for Mr. Jackson was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ with Pastors Bob Wachs and Ray Gooch presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Friends visited with the family from 6 – 8 p.m..Saturday at Hanks Chapel Church, and at other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to either Hanks Chapel UCC Building Fund, PO Box 366, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements for Mr. Jackson are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service of Pittsboro.

MICHAEL J. LEISEY

On July 26th, the Angels of Mercy helped Michael J. Leisey unfurl his wings and set flight to heaven.

Until the onset of his illness, Michael was a dedicated registered nurse, serving for 36 years. He survived the brunt of hazing by being the very first male student at the (then) Lancaster, PA General Hospital School of Nursing. Michael served in emergency rooms and cardiac catherization labs in the communities of Lancaster County, PA, Miami, FL, Billings, MT and most recently, the Chatham, NC area.

In a sense, Michael was the “John Charles Fremont” of his era: a pioneering pathfinder for men (and women) breaking into the nursing field.

Michael was a gentle person, serving his fellow man, helping them to understand and deal with their health issues. Mike was a natural leader and willingly shared his knowledge with others so that they were enabled to help others.

At the same time, Michael was a dedicated and loving husband, father and son doing what we all do with our families. While his passion was medicine, he was also a champion for animals. He, with his wife Connie, have rescued ten dogs, four cats and two horses.

Michael grew up in the “Cabbage Hill” area of Lancaster and attended public schools in Lancaster, PA After graduation from McCaskey High School in 1965, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he received his introductory medical training that eventually lead him to his life’s work.

Mike leaves his wife Connie, daughters, Lakey, and Kellie, his mother, Mildred, sons-in-law, uncles, cousins and his many friends to mourn his passing. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Michaels’s memory to the Chatham County Animal Shelter, 725 County Landfill Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

BUNNY BUNTING BURT

Bunny Bunting Burt, 59, of Newport, died Monday, August 2, 2010 at Carolina East Medical Center.

Mrs. Burt served in the U.S. Army Women's Army Corps, She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church, the Carolina Seagulls RV Club, and employed by the Carteret County Board of Education.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday at Open Door Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Linebarger officiating with Military Honors. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, John T. Burt of the home; daughter, Nori A. Jackson and husband MSGT Dan E. (USMC) of Oceanside, CA; son, John L. Burt of Siler City; three brothers, David Bunting and wife Doris of Pasadena, MD, John Michael Bunting and wife Rita of Madeira Beach, FL, James Andrew Bunting and wife Hedda of Newport; two sisters, Mary Kay Bunting of Sykesville, MD, Sharon N. Bunting of the home; four grandchildren, Dan E. Jackson II, Dezrae A. Jackson, Laci M. Burt, and Keigan H. Burt; and a host of friends and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry T. and Barbara Jean Bunting, and sister, Barbara Dolbey.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Open Door Baptist Church, 227 Hwy 24, Morehead City, NC 28557; or, Relay for Life, Carteret Craven EMC, Attn: Kathy Wilson, PO Box 1490, Newport, NC 28570.

JOHN RAYMOND MORAN

John Raymond Moran, 70, of Bear Creek died Tuesday, (07-20-2010) at his residence.

The memorial service was held Thursday, (07-22-2010) at 2 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Simpson officiating. Burial followed in Goldston Cemetery.

Mr. Moran was born April 6, 1940, the son of Harold J. and Anne Myrtle Moran. He was born in Fall River, MA, a graduate of Rhode Island College, he was a Marine veteran, and had worked constructing submarines at Electric Boat in Quonset, RI. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Joseph Moran, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Cecile (Cesario) Moran of the home; daughter, Shannon Doyle of Liberty; son, Ryan Moran of Richmond, VA; step-daughter, Linda Wigren of RI; step-sons, Louis and Thomas Cesario of RI; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

MAXINE BURNS CLEGG GUNTER

Maxine Clegg Gunter, 83, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (07-21-2010) at her residence.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday (07-23-2010), at Chatham United Methodist Church in Moncure with Rev. Patrick Sinclair and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating.

Mrs. Gunter was born November 26, 1927 to Henry Grady and Pearle Batten Burns of Chatham County, She retired from First Citizens Bank and while a member of Chatham United Methodist Church, she served as treasurer. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Atwater Clegg, Sr., son, William Atwater Clegg, Jr., and second husband, Lee Gordon Gunter.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Clegg Clawson of Marion, VA; two grandchildren; step-son, Doug Gunter of Sanford; step-daughters, Martha Thompson of North Wilkesboro, Reba Thomas of Sanford; four step-grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren..

Memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

WILLIAM EULOS KIDD

William Eulos Kidd, 79, of Bennett, died Tuesday, (07-27-2010) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Neal Jackson and Dr. Curtis Barbery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Kidd was a native of Moore County, co-owner and operator of Kidd’s Grocery, retired from Ramtex, Inc. and poultry farming. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Vernell Maness Kidd.

Survivors include daughters, Annette Williams, Carol O'Neal of High Falls, Wanda Jones of Ramseur, Vonda Purvis of Robbins; son, Farrell Kidd of High Falls; sister, Ruth Dunlap of Westmoore; brother, Charles Kidd of Bennett; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren,.

Visitation will be held Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home in Ramseur from 6-8 p.m. and other times at the residence.

CLAUDIE LEON “SHORTY” MOFFITT

Claudie Leon “Shorty” Moffitt, 91, of 310 West Raleigh Street, Bennett, passed away Wednesday July 21, 2010 at his home.

funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2010 at Bennett Baptist Church, where he was a member and former trustee, with Rev. Tim Strider and Rev. Todd Moore officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Moffitt was a Chatham County native and the son of the late William A. and Ollie Powers Moffitt. He was a retired employee of Milliken Company in Robbins and a WW II Army Veteran having served in the 85th Infantry and being awarded the Bronze Star for valor.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Tillman Moffitt of the home; daughter, Faye Jean Webster and husband Richard of Bennett; grandchildren, Jessica Jordan and husband Doug of Bennett, Jake Sanders of Apex; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Saddie Moffitt of Robbins, Doris Tillman of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday July 22, 2010 at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

RALPH MILTON RIDDLE

Mr. Ralph Milton Riddle, 99, died July 21, 2010 in his Sanford Road home, in Pittsboro, surrounded by his family.

Born March 13, 1911 in Chatham County, Mr. Riddle was one of thirteen children born to Luther John Riddle and Bertha Farrell Riddle. He was a lifelong member of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, where he was very active in various capacities, including serving as a deacon and also as a choir member for over 60 years. Mr. Riddle was employed 44 years at Chatham Mills, where he retired as superintendent. He was also active in the Pittsboro community serving on the Town of Pittsboro Board, as a Mason in the Columbus Lodge, and on the Board of First Bank.

Mr. Riddle is survived by his daughters, Sara R. Petty Snyder of Raleigh, Peggy R. Hackney and husband Archie, of Pittsboro, Millie R. Harding and husband Wallace, of Apex; a sister, Foy R. Mann of Pittsboro; his grandchildren, Ralph Petty, Chris Petty and wife Jennifer, Kelly Petty Webster and husband Cecil, Joshua Riddle Petty, Donnie Wayne Hackney, and Annie Lucille Harding; and great-grandchildren, Jessica Clowar, Christopher Luke Petty, and Cecil Ryan Webster, Jr. Mr. Riddle was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Pattishall Riddle, his parents, son-in-law, Edward McBane Petty, and eleven brothers and sisters.

The service to celebrate Mr. Riddle’s life was conducted by Pastor Bob Wachs and Pastor Ray Gooch at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Friends visited with the family from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Hanks Chapel UCC Piano and Organ Fund, c/o Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 366, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements for Mr. Riddle were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.
